The Annual Iowa
Greyhound Election and
Membership meeting
will be held in a new
month -
Saturday,
September 15, 2012
11:00 am, at Prairie
Meadows Racetrack and
Casino - Altoona, IA.
* Voting for officers and board members will NOT be held until the September of 2013 meeting. Our ANNUAL election was held January 21,
2012 at Barratta’s - Fort Des Moines.
September’s ANNUAL meeting
should help accommodate members that attended our meetings in
the PAST in bad weather conditions
or that Bluffs Run was the only track
racing live in January. Dubuque was
closed for 6 months. September 15,
both LIVE greyhound racetracks will
be open. Be sure to pay your 2013$25.00 membership dues before
September 1 deadline to be able to
vote on issues at the September 15,
2012, meeting at Prairie Meadows.
By the time you receive this June
publication, 2012 will almost be half
gone. Don’t you sometimes wonder,
“Where has the time gone”?
In Iowa legislation we ended
another year with “LIVE” racing on
the track’s schedule for the 2012
LIVE racing season. Thanks to our
Legal, Legislative Counsel and IGA
members who let their legislators
know the importance our industry
is to the State of Iowa. Not only do
we pay taxes and buy goods relating to greyhounds, we provide jobs.
Greyhounds provide paychecks to
the owners and breeders of Iowa
bred greyhounds. When the greyhounds are retired from racing
adoption of these marvelous dogs
as pets, companion animals or assisting the disabled in their homes
is another option. The retired racer
is also brought home for breeding
or stud services. I keep wondering
“ wouldn’t it be great if we had a 10
year “live” racing contract with each
racetrack”? Wouldn’t it be great if
each track PROMOTED our industry, instead of trying to get rid of us
forever? I have talked to many who
live in Iowa that didn’t realize we still
have live greyhound racing at Council Bluffs and Dubuque. They did
know there is a casino in their town.
The IGA has a limited amount of
funds to spend for PROMOTING our
live racing, simulcast and greyhound
adoption. Once a year, in August,
the IGA hosts our greyhound booth
at the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines
in the Varied Industries Building.
Where else are WE able to meet
thousands of individuals or families
that come into our booth every
day? At our PROMOTION booth the
public can meet and greet the Iowa
Greyhound Association and Heartland Greyhound Adoption members
that spend many hours answering
questions and handing out information. You might even want to pet
or hug the greyhound in our booth
or take a photo of yourself or child
with one of these majestic dogs
from ancient times. We answer any
questions you might have on breeding, raising, training, boarding and
racing the greyhounds or how to go
about adopting a greyhound as a
pet. We welcome your membership
into the Iowa Greyhound Association.
How many of you know we have a
four-legged “celebrity” in our Association? I am talking about thorough-
bred race horse Dullahan. On April
14, Dullahan won the Blue Grass
Stakes Race at Lexington, KY and
$750,000 purse. He ran down the
favorite horse named Hansen. ON
MAY 5, DULLAHAN RAN 3RD AT THE
KENTUCKY DERBY! Our legal counsel
Jerry Crawford is the President of
Donegal Racing – the Iowa owners
of this horse.
Our prayers and get well wishes
go out to Bob Rider, alternate IGA
board member and NGA district
representative for a brighter diagnosis of complications from diabetes.
We also want to send our prayers
and wishes to Donna Lovely, past
Bluffs Run placement representative
for our greyhounds. She has been
battling cancer and we hope she

continues to improve. Alan Hill, IGA
Treasurer lost his father last year.
Alan and his family, including his
mom took this loss very hard. This
is a religious and close-knit family.
Please accept our sympathy. George
Harlan passed away on April 24,
2012. He and his sons are owners
of Harlan Kennels. And our prayers
are with Kathy Walburn in her battle
with cancer.

branched out on his own from the
Crawford Law firm. He still works
with the IGA through the Crawford
Law Firm.
2012 in the USA is election of
our President. Be sure your voice is
heard by going to the voting booth
and expressing your wishes for the
good of our country. Don’t forget to
thank our soldiers and their families
for their dedication to our FREEDOM. You know the saying-“If you
don’t vote-don’t complain”. This July
4th when we celebrate our FREEDOM, pray that it is always a part of
our lives today and forever.
I received a phone call from the
Texas Greyhound Association requesting our rules for Iowa bred
payments and how our breeders
program works. Thanks to our Iowa
Department of Agriculture-Horse
and Dog Breeders program Bureau
Chief, Jill Paxton, and the Iowa
breeders, owners and members.
Iowa has one of the BEST if not THE
BEST greyhound breeders program
in the country. This cannot happen
unless rules and regulations are
obeyed. Inspections are a big part
of the reason we are a success. We
are kept updated on new breeding
methods through the Iowa State
University Veterinary Department
on breeding, feeding and health
care methods that are proven to
help improve our racing and breeding stock into the future.
*Another reminder-Don’t forget
our NEW membership meeting
date September 15, 2012 at Prairie Meadows Racetrack at 11 am.
Altoona.
Mark your calendar month and
circle the date. PLEASE plan to
attend.
Your opinion and suggestions matter to the IGA.
Have a safe and Happy 4th of July.
Minutes written and submitted by
Executive Secretary -Gloria Sanders
We want to thank all of the kennels
and owners who support this organization by allowing the 2% withheld from your purses. This is our
means of keeping the organization
going. Your support is very much
appreciated.

When a dog that can comes from last to win Grade A
3/8. Gets around the corner second. Its bad news for the
rest of the field, and that is just what happened in the
finals of the BLUFFS $60,000 3/8 MILE DERBY Saturday
afternoon.
Here’s how the race started and you might say ended.
The race breaks #1, P’S REDGLARE(Dodgem By
Design-San Tan Tidbit) #2 JUMP N JIVE the defending
champion(Kiowa Mon Manny-Chill Chill),# 4 FROM ME
TO YOU having the fastest 3/8 time of the field (Fortified
Power-KL’s Rita), #8 GABLE GO CANNON (Gable OscarRJ’s Detroit), and #3 BOC’s BLAST OFF the youngest dog
in the field (Djays Octane-Ucme By A Mile). Going into
the turn Redglare goes to the front with Jump N Jive going a little wide and Gable Go Cannon going for the rail
jams up most of the field, Redglare who is in front and
Blast Off who just missed Jive. Coming out of the turn
6 • IA Greyhound Association
Redglare is about 2 lengths in front of Blast and everyone knew who the winner was going to be. The question then was who would round out the field. Well Blast
Off blows past Redglare and wins by 6 lengths. Running
2nd was GABLE CASIO (Gable Oscar-RJ’s Detroit) who
got around the turn 3rd and ran down Redglare, who
had lost her momentum when Blast went by her. Running 3rd was LOVE BITES (Deerfield Site-JR’s Quincy)
who came from last. She also ran 3rd last year. Holding
on for 4th was Redglare. Fifth went to KL’s MURIEL (Em’s
Mac Attack-Pb’s Dina Flo) 6th was FROM ME TO YOU
(Fortified Power- Kl’s Rita) 7th was Jump N Jive and 8th
went to Gable Go Cannon who got the worst of the first
turn jam.
Congratulation to Chuck Shelton and the whole crew

big success
Don’t have everything tallied, but the auction unofficially did more than $1,075,000 for the pups. The top
sales were as follows (with 11 dogs going for $20,000 or
more).
Here are all the dogs (11 altogether) that sold for more
than $20,000. Kevin Dalton and Kenneth Biehle did
particularly well. All in all, a hugely successful meet in
virtually every aspect. Fall Meet dates are Oct. 8-13.
Girl On Fire (K. Dalton) $27,000
KB’s Red Strike (K. Biehle) $26,000
TB’s Lizard Lick (T. Biehle) $26,000
SE’s High Octane (S. Ward) $25,000
Seegold Nikita (P. Limmer) $23,000
KB’s Igottarun (K. Biehle) $22,000
Tribute Rue (Dalton) $22,000
TK Black Knight (Tanner) $21,000
TK Extinquisher (Tanner) $21,000
Panem (Dalton) $21,000
Hunger Games (Dalton) $20,000
The National Greyhound Association wrapped up its
2012 Spring Meet on Saturday with a pup auction that
easily eclipsed the $l million mark, exceeding most everyone’s expectations.
The unofficial tally had the pup auction bringing in
more than $1,075,000 in sales from Friday evening’s and
Saturday’s programs. Several greyhounds sold in excess
of $25,000 at the sale.
Thirteen main-stakes, featuring 342 entries, were
staged throughout the week, with most of those pups
being consigned to the weekend auction.
Last spring meet’s sale (2011) netted $745,550 in pup
sales.
More details on the NGA Meet and auction will be released at a later time, when the official results are tallied.

Karen,
I am speechless. Thank you for the
kind words. I’d love to talk to
you and help tell the story if not too
late. I don’t know if you
learned in your interviews, but my
wife and I adopted a greyhound a
little over a year ago. He is
AMAZING! Please do not hesitate
to call me if you’d like to talk
more. Thanks again for the kind
words.

Dear Mr. Keeping,
My name is Karen Williams and I
am the Host of The Mid South Dogs
and Cats Radio Show. I am writing
you to say thank you. Although we
have never met you have given
me a memory I will treasure for the
remainder of my life.
Please allow me to explain.
The Mid South Dogs and Cats
Radio Show is a community service
talk show that airs on KWAM AM
990 in Memphis, TN on Saturday
mornings between 8-9 AM.
We work to educate the public on
responsible pet ownership and cater
to shelters and adoption centers.
8 • IA Greyhound Association
We enlist the assistance of pet
experts such as vets, groomers and
trainers. After meeting with Vicki
Cohen with Mid South Greyhound
Adoption Option, I was granted
the rare treat of an interview with
one of your owner/trainers, Mr. J.
O’Donnal with NorthShore Kennels.
His passion and candid information
about how greyhounds are raced
and the training involved as well as
the facts on greyhound retirement
were exactly what our 10,000 plus
listeners needed to know. He invited
me to a morning training session
and I attended it on April 19, 2012.
Memphis and I learned so very
much about how important your
track is to not only the
greyhounds but those who love
and raise these remarkable athletes.
I spent the morning working with
Rayonna Marroitt, one of the few
women trainers in the US. Being on
your track at dawn exercising these
awesome athletes was a once in a
lifetime experience and one that I
will hold dear to my heart.
While I was at Southland Park
Gaming and Racing I thought
you should know that everyone
I encountered at your track was
wonderful. I had never been to a
greyhound track before and found
every employee and Kennel person
to be gracious and helpful. Such
perfect hospitality is a rare thing.
It is my belief that Memphis
pet owners need to know how
wonderful your greyhounds are
treated and how they are trained
with humane compassion
and true devotion. You have
inadvertently played a part in
teaching our listeners and me the
differences in facts and myths
concerning racing greyhounds and
retired racer adoptions.
Once more I want to thank you
for such a precious experience
at your track. Should you ever
need my assistance with anything
please contact me. If you would
like any extra advertising we are
always seeking underwriters for our
show. We have a truly targeted and
faithful fan base. I guarantee that I
will personally see to it you have as
thoughtful and gracious treatment
in my world as you afforded me
in yours. Contact me anytime no
matter how I can assist you in your
endeavors.
Respectfully,
Karen Williams

I just wanted to let the folks that
have been finding homes for my pet
greyhounds I have brought home
over the years, after racing, that I
had the last five picked up today.
It is going to seem funny without
worrying about any turn outs as all
of the dogs I have at home have in
and out runs. I have more friends
than I can name that helped me. We
moved 23 dogs mostly old females
into adoption since the first part of
March. I want to thank Jody Evans
with Heartland Greyhound Pet
Adoption for taking the last five
today and Carolyn Kelly and her
husband Bob with Grey’s Forever for
coming to my house and picking up
the dogs and taking them to Jody.
Thanks everyone

Heartland Greyhound Adoption
would like to take the time to give
all IGA owners, breeders, and trainers a BIG THANK YOU for your cooperation and trusting us with your
retired racing greyhounds.
HGA has been adopting out retired racers for 10 1/2 years now, and
have worked with many of you since
the beginning. We are here for you,
and would like you to know that you
have our support at all times. Your
trainers have become our friends
over the years. We have watched
their kids grow, and it has been very
rewarding.
We hope to have many more years
of taking greyhounds after their racing careers end or some greyhounds
who did not race for one reason or
another. It is because of your good
breeding that we have these great
companions. We have had prospective adopters from other states request greyhounds from us because
of their condition when they come
off the track. They are healthy and
come from an environment that is
clean and caring.
The owners and trainers give us
as much time as they can before we
get the greyhounds. Advance notice
helps because it gives us a chance
to plan and find foster homes and
transportation. The trainers and
owners have always been good to
work with, and provide us with the
NGA certificates, vaccination records, coordinating and sharing in
the transportation, monetary donations, and muzzles. A few owners

Ground Milled Flax Benefits For Canines
This high quality flax seed supplement is designed to improve your animal’s
general health and well being by:
• Better digestion
• Healthy skin and coat
• Less joint pain and stiffness
• Less shedding
• Less scratching and itching
• Reduced allergies
• Increased energy
• Healthy skin and coat
• Quicker recovery after injury or illness
• Increased stamina and performance
Essential Fatty Acids. They are required in the structure of the membranes that
surround each and every cell and organ in the body. An animal’s requirement
of EFAs is greatly increased by training, competition, stress, illness or age.
If your animal is exposed to any of these factors, it is very likely that they are deficient in EFAs. This
deficiency can have a negative effect on their health in a number of ways, and severely limit athletic
performance as well as healthy life expectancy.
The following are areas that EFA’s supplementation can be beneficial
Flax as a fat supplement An animal that is very active can greatly benefit from healthy Omega 3 fatty
acid as well as less active animals, because they are healthy fats. This is where the inclusion of flax
seed can be a safe and effective choice.
Digestion EFAs and fiber, as that found in flax seed, improve digestion by slowing the stomach’s
emptying time, support healthy bowel flora, and enhance the absorption of oil-soluble phytonutrients
from food. EFAs aid in better digestion and overall absorption of nutrients, thereby providing more
fuel for performance. Immune system, allergies, infection fighting, and anti-inflammatory- EFAs that
are rich in lignans (powerful anti-oxidants) produce hormone-like eicosanoids that regulate immune
and inflammatory responses. In addition to boosting the immune system, flax seed may lessen many
common allergies and have anti-fungal, anti-yeast, and anti-microbial properties; which can help to
protect against infections. Flax seed also produces prostaglandins, which offer anti-inflammatory
properties.
Essential for blood EFAs aid in the production of hemoglobin, the portion of the red blood cells which
carry oxygen and nutrients. The result is better oxygen uptake and more efficient delivery of nutrients
and oxygen to the cells, tissues, organs, glands and muscles. Performance- EFAs are anabolic-they
increase the body’s ability to metabolize oxygen and therefore increase oxidation rate, metabolic rate,
energy level, stamina and performance.
Breeding/Fertility EFAs have been noted as increasing breeding potential, and helps to monitor
and balance hormone levels, increasing the animals willingness to breed as well as replenishing the
nourishment that the mother needs to pass on the her young. Healthy coat and skin- Flax seed has
been shown to reduce and prevent problems with dermatitis as well as providing the animal with a
shiny coat, which is often an indicator of good health.

The Conrad, Montana, Orpheum Theatre.
Old acquaintances in the dog racing scene have been
nosing around, here and there, wondering whatever happened to Maddog McDermutt and Little Elsie.
Nothing. We’re still here.
We are getting ready for swim school season number 41
in the present pool in the backyard, a pool which is falling
apart like its builder.
We just took a trip to Portland, on Amtrak, over and back,
for a story or two for The Greyhound Review, 5,000 Greyhounds adopted as pets, that date approaching some time
this summer and an interview with Roger Garland, an interesting fellow who started the adoption program at Multnomah years ago. Multnomah has closed, but the adoption
group has not, they are still going strong, and Little Elsie
and I attended a gathering in downtown Portland called
a Greyhound Garden Party which attracted at least 100
folks and their Greyhounds and wannabees These stories

will more than likely appear in the Review in forthcoming
issues.
Other than that, if there is any Maddog and Little Elsie
news which might be of interest, it would be the production of my musical comedy, The Tooth Fairy Came to
Gopher Gulch, a children’s play, which, due to conflicting
and competing events in Conrad, MT, a whole lot of adults
showed up, not many kids, that’s about par for the course,
but the adults got right with it by golly and pitched in with
the call and response stuff, and we had three great performances.
I would love to see this play put on in the theatre at the
fairgrounds with an Iowa cast. Have a few pet Greyhounds
standing by for PR and adoption possibilities, a win-win
situation all around.
The Tooth Fairy Came to Gopher Gulch is getting a reputation.
A good one.
The first production was
in play form, no music, by
the University of Great Falls,
Wayne Reynolds directing. Then, who knows why,
I just about lost my mind,
convinced the only way to
go was to make it a musical. I put on a recital here in
Great Falls. One of my exswimmers, a New York actor
who had toured nationally
in Cabaret, owed me one
because he borrowed, I say

gave it back, an old tenor

versity, is now living in Conrad and coincidentally he and
his wife are on the board of directors of the Pondera Players, an active group with a great reputation for musicals
and dinner and stage theatre. He emailed me and wondered if the tooth fairy was interested in coming to Conrad.
If a firecracker goes off in the woods and nobody hears it
is there sound?
I did not play hard to get.
The wheels were put into motion, the cast was selected,
the play went into rehearsal, then dress rehearsal, the set
went up, props, costumers, lights, sound, action, cameras,
audience, and the musical came to be in Conrad’s Orpheum Theater. Book, song, and … yes, dance.
What goes around comes around. Years ago I played a
Conrad concert, with Craig Smith on piano, and Little Elsie
doing the Charleston to “Five foot Two and I wonder Where
My Baby is Tonight,” as a fund raiser for the Orpheum’s
renovation, and here we were, my musical going forward in
this famous theatre.
Talk about a high. There wasn’t room enough on the
small stage for a pit band, as the area in front of the stage
was The Thunder Flats Dig, a famous dinosaur dig, and so
we went with computer generated music and vamps and
sound effects and I hate to say it, but what a relief. I spent
my time at dress rehearsals and performances taking pictures.
And the play came off, and boy did it, and the music,
tune by tune, 11 of them, bounced around in that Orpheum theatre, and the audience responded, and it was
good, and when the reprise of Gopher Gulch rocked the
place and the play closed with the tune’s rousing presentation, I had a strong suspicion I was on to something.
I could be wrong.
Anybody know anybody involved in a drama/theatre
group: high school, college, regional?

My Dog, My True Best Friend
My dog-named champ is a best friend to me,
I have some traits that belong only to he.
Like loyalty and respect, compassion and faithfulness.
Of each trait, he always gets more, and never less.
I love him so deeply; he’s always in my heart,
He loves me as well, and that’s the best part.
Champ is exceptionally pleasant, he is rarely ever a
pest,
He’s affectionate and loving, that’s what makes him
the best.
Wherever I go,no matter where I am,
His love stays with me, his friendly self, gentle as a
lamb,
And when he dies, and leaves me behind,
He will never be forgotten, since he was the pleasurable kind,
Champ always has happiness to lend,
And that’s what makes him my true best friend.

Trail of the Racing Greyhound. Paid for from our PROMOTION fund account. Cost to purchase this very informative

This magazine has three themes: (1) the nagging question of the evolution of the Greyhound, from the folks on
the farms and from the trainers at the tracks, the folks
who day in and day out work with these dogs, and the
adoption folks who know these dogs as the retired athletes and devoted friends that they are; (2) the impact
Greyhounds have made on the Iowa economy through
the state’s two race tracks and Iowa’s Department of
Agriculture; and (3) is it true that every Iowa Greyhound farm has a non-Greyhound administrator?
