Who we are:
At Akoma we do business differently, to make a
difference. We are committed to ethically
sourcing and producing a range of high quality,
100% organic raw materials from Ghana for the
worldwide beauty and food industry, under
genuine fair trade terms. Our goal is to improve
the lives of people in Ghana by focusing on fair
pricing, good working conditions, sustainability
and environmental sensitivity. Akoma operates
and manages an integrated supply chain to
ensure the highest quality products.
History:
In the year 2005, Augustus W. Klufio and Akoma
International UK Limited teamed up with
competent Ghanaian hands to export food and
cosmetic ingredients from Ghana. The core
objective was to identify deprived communities
and empower the indigenous people especially
women to become self-reliant. This intent gave
birth to the Akoma Cooperative Multipurpose
Society in the year 2006. Akoma is a NGO
established to help members of the village of
Pusu-Namogo to rise out of poverty. Basically,
the cooperative is for women who want to
improve their and their familie’s quality of life. In
Bolgatanga, unemployment is a critical issue
together with low literacy rates and poor access
to health services. Upon joining the cooperative,
women can earn an income by collecting,
processing and selling shea nuts/ shea butter.
Motivation:
Our ethos is evident in everything we do. From
collecting and processing raw materials to the
production, distribution and packaging of our
products, we offer a traceable and reliable, yet
reassuringly ethical, supply chain. In short, we are a
business with a conscience. We aim to lead the way
by representing the best in Fairtrade policies and
ensuring all our activities have a positive impact on
the communities of Ghana. We aim to educate on
the importance of organic farming and processing.
Objectives:
Akoma provides employment for local women who
want to improve their families’ quality of life and
empower them to create a better future for their
families through training schemes and employment
opportunities. Communities now have hope for better
facilities, e.g. schools, clinics, etc. Additionally local
expert knowledge is sought to make best use of
available resources in the community.

Who we are:
Our inception in the industry dates back to 1994
as
a
non-profit
rehabilitation
program
established in Tirupur by the Franciscan Sisters.
Employing a workforce of 300, including
underprivileged women and 120 physically
challenged people, the endeavour was the firstof-its-kind in India. Those humble beginnings
have since then paved the way for us to be a
garment manufacturer of repute.
History:
Assisi was established nearly two decades ago
with 5 trainees in a small building of 2000 sq.ft.
Initially the factory was run exclusively for the
deaf and dumb, and then gradually progressed
to export organic products to EL PUENTE, a
German importer. Among the first companies in
the world to endorse Organic Cotton and
Fairtrade, we started contract farming in
Maharashtra by giving advance to the farmers.
Though hesitant at first due to less yielding, the
farmers co-operated and in due course, the
production of Organic cotton increased across
India.
Motivation:
Deeply committed to the environment we
operate in, we believe that endorsing organic
products is the first step in this direction.
Conventional cotton cultivation necessitates the
use of synthetic fertilizers and pesticides. These
not only have an adverse effect on the soil but
also cause damage to human health. Which is
why, we exclusively manufacture and export only
organic and Fairtrade garments across the world.
Objectives:
Assisi Garments Private Ltd. works towards
sustainable
development
through
organic
products, to continue serving the needy and
rededicate ourselves to Nature as well as giving
fair premium to farmers that will lead them to
practice fair-trade and organic cotton cultivation
while safeguarding Mother Nature today, for our
children tomorrow.

Who we are:
Craft Resource Center promotes selfdetermination amidst India’s artisan community
through
comprehensive
capacity-building,
leading to sustainability of their craft as a
dignified, creative and adequate source of
livelihood. This is done on the basis of Fair
Trade practices that are enshrined in its
business policies and which are in conformity
with the principles of Fair Trade.
History:
Craft Resource Center started with one full time
employee and another working half a day... with
only two producer group partners, dealing in
leather and printed silks.
Now, 26 years later, we have 20 people working
with us and 63 producer groups from all across
the country, 36 of them deal exclusively in
exports.
Motivation:
CRC believes that all human beings have three
basic needs to survive - income, health and
education. Once a secure income is assured, a
can person be motivated to take care of his/her
health and education. Additionally, for any social
change to be successful, it has to come from the
bottom, and only then can it be termed
sustainable development.
Objectives:
CRC grew organically with a desire to fulfill the
needs of their target beneficiaries. While CRC's
main objective is to create opportunities and
improve
the
lives
of
socio-economically
backwarded people, the company also absorbed
those who were themselves in need of a steady
income and opportunities to develop skills and
inherent talents. Most of CRC’s members have
been trained on the job and today are more than
capable of performing their individual tasks without
guidance.

Who we are:
Founded in 2003, the Global Mamas community
is comprised of thousands of people worldwide
working together with the mission of creating
prosperity for African women and their families.
Our Mamas define prosperity as going beyond
financial well-being to include happiness and
good health. Our Mamas realize their dreams of
having the opportunity to support their families,
send their children to school, improve their
health, and save for the future.
History:
In 2003 we co-founded Global Mamas as a nonprofit organization with the mission to transform
the lives of women entrepreneurs in Ghana by
helping them to grow their businesses. We were
providing one-on-one consulting on business
and financial management when six women
said, “Listen, if you don’t help us find new
markets for our textile products we aren’t going
to need help with business management
because there will be no business left to
manage.” The six women united with the name
Global Mamas to produce and export textile
products under a common brand.
Motivation:
The mission of Global Mamas is to create a life of
prosperity for African women and their families. We
define prosperity as financial well-being, good
health, and happiness. We achieve prosperity by
creating and selling handmade products of the
highest quality.
Objectives:
Global Mamas is committed to sustainable growth
and since inception has created hundreds of jobs in
Ghana. Fair Trade practices ensure that every

further empower our Mamas by inviting them to be a
part of organizational decisions and product
development. Through our powerful network of
international volunteers and interns, our Mamas
receive personalized, hands-on training to refine
their skills and strengthen their capacity to produce
better products, manage their growing businesses
and personal incomes, and improve their health and

goods, mostly made of local
materials such as wool, leather,
wood, ceramics, horn.
Who we are:
Manos del Uruguay is a non-profit social
organization which, since 1968, has provided
jobs for craftswomen living in Uruguay rural
areas.
In Manos, garments are designed and knitted mainly with wool yarns- for the local market and
for renowned international brand-name clothes.
History:
Manos del Uruguay was basically founded,
when Olga S. de Artagaveytia (Founder) and a
friend were talking about what each one of them
was trying to do in the different rural zones
where they lived. One thing led to another, more
women joined the project and the goal to find
income sources for the hundreds of
craftswomen in the provinces had been set.
The next step for the founders was to
commercialize the crafts of women and men of
the rural zones of the provinces, the manual
skills and creative potential of whom was
completely wasted.
Motivation:
We, the craftswomen, are the owners of Manos
del Uruguay, and we are part of a non-profit
Association, the objective of which is to
generate work for rural women, allowing us to
stay in our towns, earn our living and develop
ourselves as human beings.
Objectives:
Manos del Uruguay’s mission is eradicating poverty
through sustainable economic growth, enabling
craftspeople to improve the quality of their craft
products, so that, in this way, they can continue
their personal development. The aim is also to
generate and develop work sources for women in
the interior of the country and to provide economic,
social and cultural opportunities to all its members.
It’s also important to value handicrafts and the work
of artisans.

Who we are:
MitiMeth is a fast growing woman owned social
enterprise making handicrafts from invasive aquatic
weeds, agro-waste and other non-timber resources
prevalent in Nigeria. We are changing livelihoods for
good by training and partnering with communities at
the grassroots to create innovative and functional
handicrafts. We are conscious about preserving our
environment and inspired to transform renewable
resources into beneficial use. MitiMeth's unique
handcrafted products include multipurpose baskets,
lamps, vases, ottomans, wall decor, diningware designed for those who have a taste for unique
locally made handicrafts.
History:
MitiMeth was incorporated as a business enterprise
in 2011. In 2012 MitiMeth was a featured winner of
Sustainable Solutions Showcase (SSS). In 2013
MitiMeth received the local Raw Materials Content
Award for the innovative use of available local raw
materials. In October 2014 Achenyo became the
Cartier Women’s Initiative Awards Laureate for SubSaharan Africa and in January 2015 Achenyo was
nominated for the Creative Industry Award.
Motivation:
Stubborn aquatic weeds choke up several of
Nigeria’s waterways thus hampering traditional
fishing activities and curtailing access to water
bodies. At MitiMeth, we are all about extracting value
from an environmental problem. At MitiMeth we are
transforming this environmental menace into profit. We
are helping people in our communities to stand up and
walk by creating job opportunities through innovative
handcrafted products.
Objectives:
MitiMeth resolves rampant unemployment by creating
jobs. MitiMeth aims to alleviate the clogging of the
waterways by harvesting invasive aquatic weeds for
their handicraft. By producing eco-friendly items they
want to satisfy the needs of environmentally conscious
consumers. Additionally, MitiMeth promotes the use of
locally available resources through the transformation
and utilization of natural fibres.

women went to Nairobi to sell their creations at
East Africa’s largest Christmas Craft Fair.
Starting with a big order from WWF in 2000
Ocean Sole got more and more orders and

the Ocean, and is a Kenyan solution to a growing
problem of waste as the Ocean is becoming the
world’s dumpyard!

floats downstream and out into the Ocean.

Who we are:
Upcycling Deluxe is the largest provider of
Upcycling-Design in Germany as well as a
pioneer in the fast growing trend of upcycling
design. Their assortment includes over 1.500

end of 2013 Upcycling Deluxe has its own online
store.
History:
The basic business idea was to unite the best
design products made of reused materials from
all around the world in one place. Stanislaus
Teichmann and Eric Pieper had this idea when
they were sitting at their kitchen table thinking
about a sustainable business idea as there is a
world full of waste and creative ideas and that
there should be something to make out of that.
Upcycling Deluxe was born.
Motivation:
To Upcycling Deluxe it is important that their
products convince by their design, their use as
well as an adequate price. The certain
something of the products is their contribution to
support the planet by avoiding waste as their
products are made of repurposed materials and
supporting fair trade and entrepreneurial
sustainability which starts by their own business
management and all their products are produced
under the aspect of fair trade.
Objectives:
Upcycling Deluxe only supports socially and
ecologically sustainable producers with fair
working conditions. Together their goal is to
spread the idea of upcycling. Furthermore, their
products aim to point the way away from the
throwaway society.
