Our Jewish Women’s Week campaign
aims to raise funds to support vulnerable
children and families who live in border
towns which have been subject to
constant rocket attacks. WIZO provides
a safe and secure environment. Last
year JWW raised over £240k - an
outstanding amount.
“We had such a fun evening. The questions
were really challenging, yet enjoyable. It is
such a great event. We are already looking
forward to next year. “
Thank you to the 133 households across the
UK and as far afield as Israel, USA and Mexico
who enjoyed a challenging quiz this year. The
1600 participants raised in excess of £30k
which will go towards our vocational projects
in Israel.

Robert Harris addressed a capacity crowd at
our Literary Lunch held at St John’s Wood
Synagogue, London in December. His latest
book, “An Officer and A Spy” retells the
story of the Dreyfus affair, one of the great
miscarriages of French justice. This true story
resonates today with many modern parallels.
The event raised in excess of £20k.

“Inspiring, humbling, moving,
nourishing for the soul”
These are just a few of the words
that the Commitment Award
winners expressed on their
recent visit to Israel. Visits to
WIZO projects included Rainbow
House, a beauty training school,
Ahuzat Yeladim, a boarding
school for children with extreme
psychological
difficulties,
Rebecca Sieff Centre, Jerusalem
and Neve WIZO, a foster home
located in Herzliya.
Karen Mattison MBE said, “Firstly
we felt the passion of the
WIZO staff, lay leadership and
volunteers. This is humbling to
witness. Second, wherever we
went we were told. “To give is to
receive”. This powerful message
is at the heart of the drive to do
good and is what we need to
convey”. Her sentiments were
echoed by the group and prize

WIZO leads the way in coping with domestic violence
A team of Dutch social workers from the social welfare organisation Fier recently travelled
to Israel to see how WIZO works with victims of domestic violence. The mission equipped
the Dutch team with new ideas on how to tackle the growing concern of domestic violence.
A key difference in Israel is that the children who reside with their mothers maintain contact
with their fathers. The mothers are taught communication strategies for the future when they
leave the shelter and will inevitably have contact with the fathers. These coping strategies
are taught in the shelter. The team felt that WIZO’s high standards and levels of excellence
were something that the Dutch should aspire to in their country.

WIll you help secure
the future of Israel?
Leeds WIZO was privileged to host Dame Helen Hyde at the United Hebrew
Congregation.
We know that your first priority when making
a Will is to provide for your loved ones, but
many people want to leave something to a
charity close to their heart.
Dame Helen, who is a trustee of the Holocaust Education Trust and was
recently appointed to David Cameron’s Holocaust Commission, said to the
100 Leeds WIZOUK supporters, “If I had the power I would make it mandatory
for every child in this country to be taught Holocaust education properly –
and not just for an hour a week“. She added, “ young people have to be
taught to study the roots of racial hatred, to fight any form of hatred and
intolerance and to stand up and be brave to refute Holocaust denial.”
By leaving a legacy to WIZO you can:
secure the future of Israel’s most

vulnerable citizens
