Elthorne Park W7 2AD Saturday 18 June 2016 Suggested donation £1 2 Hanwell Carnival @hanwellcarnival WELCOME from Team Carnival How time flies. That’s another year gone and it’s carnival time again. Our big news for 2016 is that we’ve expanded. Partly because of building work at Elthorne Park High School, the carnival will be held not just in the main park but also in the rear extension. The main stages, beer and food will be at the back. The fairground, children’s attractions, dog show, acoustic tent and all the stalls will remain in the main section. That means more room for even more fun, so don’t forget to check out both areas. so this year ECT (everyone will have seen their green buses around Ealing) is teaming up with Ealing Centre for Independent Living (ECIL) to ensure people with mobility issues can come to carnival, secure in the knowledge they will be dropped off in a safe place and they will have a ride home (see page 23 for details). In other news, the more eagle-eyed surfers out there will have already noticed our brand spanking new website, courtesy of Darren Moore of Now Communications in Brentford. So go have a look and hopefully it will inspire you to get involved because as ever, Hanwell Carnival would love to hear from people willing to help out, whether it is on the day or in the run-up. On the sporting front, carnival is delighted to welcome Brentford Football Club and Ealing Finally, keep your collective Trailfinders Rugby Club for their fingers crossed for a rain-free inaugural year. They will be day on Saturday 18 June! running the sports zone where there will be football and rugby (obviously!) and also Ultimate Frisbee, basketball and Dodgeball. If you need a drink to wash it all down, the beer tent– with draught beerand our Pimms tent are nearby. Proud to support Hanwell Carnival Any profits from these will be ploughed back into next year’s event. In the front section of the park you’ll find a smaller drinks tent selling cans. Three charities - League of Friends Ealing Hospital, United Anglo Caribbean Society and The Sunshine Foundation - will also be selling food in the front section. Our thanks to The Forester Pub, The Best and Rheian Davies at DH Law for all their help. Did you know that Hanwell Carnival is London’s longest running Carnival? It first took place in 1898 and was set up with the purpose to raise money for Ealing Hospital (formerly known as the Cottage Hospital). His opened his first shop in Boston Road in 1983. Carnival would be a much more muted affair without him. Simon Bishop, a top soundman at the BBC, mixes the sound on the music stage. He says: “Keith gets up early and makes sure that all the plans and logistics work. If Keith says it will Well there’s one sound engineer carnival could not do without. He sorts out the sound on the music, community and acoustic stages. His name’s Keith Loosely and he owns Knight Sound and Light in the heart of Hanwell on the Uxbridge Road. He hires out equipment to DJs but back in the 1970s he was a DJ himself. As Keith Kristian, he built up such a reputation he worked with some of the big names of the day from Radio One. Having left school at 15 with no qualifications and not much idea of what he wanted to do, he got a job as a TV aerial fitter and started “building things” such as audio and video kits in his 12 Hanwell Carnival happen, then it will happen.” Back in his DJ days Keith Kristian got £50 per disco. Might not sound like much but back then, the average weekly wage was £32, a Big Mac cost 40p and a pint of lager 20p. They have an EP called Baby it’s Cold Inside. Well let’s hope it’s not cold outside ‘cos we are going to want to dance when they get going. @thecoldheaduk The Cold Head @PCLBandLondon Power, Corruption and Lies 14 Hanwell Carnival @hanwellcarnival 14.30 ACE MOTIF Ace Motif is only 22 but he’s already been performing music for 11 years. Currently studying English Literature at university, he’s not only a talented singer, songwriter and rapper but also lists acting and modeling among his accomplishments. He says he wants to channel his passion for the arts and use it to challenge – even smash - the stereotypes people have about young black men. He’s also good at freestyling – making up songs off the top of his head or even using words or phrases shouted out by the audience. @AceMotif Ace Motif 15.15 IMAN London singer-songwriter, Iman has written with Ed Sheeran, toured with Rudimental, and now she’s ready to step into the spotlight with her own material. Championed by seminal Jazz DJ Gilles Peterson, Iman is not only a talented artist with a distinctive voice but also a highly sought -after songwriter whose material has been recorded by artists all over Europe. And they love carnival, “It’s something I remember going to as a kid and always wanted to play at,” says drummer west London with, as they say, a Craig Bruce. “The Carnival trunk full of songs and a sound shows the real community spirit that’s all their own. Mashing together vintage influences with fresh grooves, they recently featured on Dermot O’Leary’s Radio 2 show. The petting farm is provided by Appreciating Animals - a mobile zoo that takes all sorts of animals to schools, residential homes and public events. You’ll have the chance to get up close and personal with loads of cute and cuddly creatures. The shows will be timed and in each one you’ll first see a large crocodile and learn all about them – plus ask any questions you might have – and then you’ll get to see and even hold some smaller ones. Buy your tickets at the Animal Zone, go and have a look around some of the other attractions then come back for your show. There’s always a queue for our pony rides where children often experience sitting in a saddle for the first time. This year there will be more ponies – so hopefully you won’t have to wait as long. Charity is still the carnival’s reason for being, and many stalls will be occupied by groups highlighting their cause and hoping to raise some money. As charities are so important to the carnival, their stalls are subsidised which means they only pay half the cost. Charities also take part in the procession. Abid Hussain is a carnival stalwart. He runs a sweet stand as a business but every year he donates the profits from a few events he attends – of which carnival is one - to the Imran Khan Cancer Appeal (IKCA). Nonetheless 55 people and several dogs set off on the historic threehour walk around Hanwell’s ancient boundaries – to ensure they were all intact and undamaged by insurgents from neighbouring parishes. lesser known ones including a back garden (!), all of which have boundary stones attesting to their age and historic function. For Fiona Biggins and David Bishopp, who moved to Hanwell in 2015, it was the perfect way to spend the day and get to know the area. “We went to the Hootie this year and last, and we wanted to get a feel of another aspect to the community,” said Fiona. Before the walk they were attentively reading the booklet all participants receive in return for a donation, which goes towards carnival (£200 was raised in total). The eight-mile/12 km walk takes in many of Hanwell’s best known features - the Grand Union Canal, Bunny Park, Wharncliffe Viaduct and some 52 Hanwell Carnival “We’re really hoping to get to see some of the history of the area,” said David. @hanwellcarnival We’d like to thank - Elaine Hill for organising the walk, the Clarke family, Conor O’Sullivan and Haslemere Avenue Allotments for allowing access to four of the stones, the William Hobbayne Community Gardens for providing the willow branches that everyone used to beat the boundary stones.
