Living it up! JTS Northside Newsletter Welcome to JTS Northside Save the JTS Northside Play the JTS Senior Nutrition Program Bring a Guest Contest JTS Northside Senior Nutrition Program Needs More Senior Lunch Participants In Order To Keep The Program Open. As you may know, the 4C Council was given the opportunity to provide the senior lunches at JTS Northside in July 2010. The limited funds are from the County Senior Nutrition Program. The funding for this program was to serve and average 58 meals to seniors per day. Although we have our participants’ ongoing support, the Center has been only serving approximately 44 meals daily. This means the County will pay less into our Senior Nutrition Program for food purchases and for staff preparing the food. Therefore, it is very essential that the JTS Northside Community Center Senior Nutrition Program needs to serve more lunches every day! This is a JTS Northside Weekly Contest where the Program participant who brings the most guests to lunch each week, Sunday through Thursday will win a prize. Your guests must be new to Northside or have not attended for lunch within the last three (3) months. JTS is where the community comes to live it up! The Contest starts Sunday, February 6 and ends Thursday, March 31, 2011. The number of guests will be tallied on Thursdays and the winner will be announced the following Sunday where they will be awarded their prize, have their picture taken, and the picture will be posted in the JTS Northside lobby. The contest has been created to keep the Center open by increase the number of meals served. Flyer for the contest is on Page 3. Senior Nutrition Program County & City Meetings Thank you Northside community members who were able to attend and speak at the Senior Nutrition Task Force Public Hearing on Wednesday, January 26. JTS Northside Newsletter Tribute to a JTS Northside Hero “They attended all the dances and joined the chorus,” says daughter Fe Celia King. They were Mr. and Mrs. Valentines!” The couple coordinated community dances, events and contributed greatly to the Center. “I danced before … very well … the Rigodon de Honor .” “They were here every day.” Smiling, Manaois boasts, “I danced before … very well … the Rigodon de Honor (a traditional elegant Filipino dance).” Imagine moving across the world to the U.S. after retiring. Yes, after retiring. This December 2010, 92 year old Major Hernando Ferrer Manaois, born April 2, 1918 returns to his hometown in the Philippines after being part of the Center for 23 years. “I will truly miss Mr. Manaois,” Lily Ponce, JTS Northside receptionist says tearfully. “He always stopped by the window to say, ‘Hi.’” Major Manaois, a WWII Veteran of the United States Army Forces in the Far East (USAFFE) and survivor of The Bataan Death March, and his wife Apolonia moved to San Jose from the Philippines in December 1987. Parents to ten children, they relocated to spend time with their four children, Fe Celia, Alicia, Ernie, Merlo and their 22 grandchildren living in Calif. Within days of arriving, the Manaois’ heard about Northside Community Center, visited, made friends, and instantly became active board members. ISSUE 5 In 2006, he had two grand mal seizures which left him unable to walk. He is in a wheel chair now. After sharing a beautiful marriage of 63 year, Mrs. Manaois passed away in 2008.Having served in the USAFFE, Major Manaois also organized American Legion Post 858 at Northside and served as coorganizer even up to 3 years ago. King says it’s true, “The group was really close. They traveled to advocate for American Veterans.” Manaois historical mark extends even more. He adds, “We went to Washington DC and Sacramento to meet the Governor to advocate for our rights. And in 2009, The President signed Filipino Veterans Equity Bill.” “We have more relatives there that can help support. He will have more company and family to care for him. He also has many friends there. Before he and my mom moved here. He started a senior group back home,” concludes King. Ponce thinks back, “He danced with everyone with fancy footwork. He was one of Northside’s best dancers… he was very loving and caring with everybody. He will be truly missed at Northside.” Thank you and Bon Voyage, Major Hernando Ferrer Manaois has been more than fortunate for your contributions and membership to JTS Northside Community Center. Photo of Major Manaois can also be seen in the American Legion 858 Post upon permission. He also lectured at Universities to tell about WWII. He’s been interviewed numerous times and many research papers have been written about him by students at San Jose “It’s my duty.” State University. “It’s my duty,” tells Manaois. He believes it is his ongoing responsibility to advocate and represent American Veterans. Manaois says he’s going home to regain his strength.
