On a scale of one to ten, I would give Redefine's recent

Redefine - Seven by
Seven (Sugar Shack
Records) GD single.
From the opening
seconds ol Eeven by
Seven, you know
your building up to
some monster metal
riffing, ass-kicking
and screaming tune,
and thatts just what
you get (at least in the intro). The song has a
distinctive industrial-metal feel as therers loads of
guitar effects and weird loops underneath the
distorted vocals and guitars. The verses show the
bandts Placebo influences with both characterastic
guitar parts and vocals with a more upbeat punkish
vibe leading to a mellower break before the metal
comes back.

Deftones - Manchester Apoilo March 23d 2OO1.
Manchester Apollo is a converted theatre, formalty a
place for light hearted comedy plays and almost
definitely the likes of Shakespeare and so forth. That
night was for the monster metal that is the Deftones
riding on the back of their critically acclaimed White
Pony, the new album with a more mellow theme. The
mellow didntt show though, as the night was pure
metal from both the Defttones and their supporting
acts.
First up were Taproof, a new band who showed a lot
of promise and certainly had strong influence from
the likes ot the Defttones themselves. The lead
singer is a true showman (Ghino style) throwing out
lots of energy and singing two whole songs whilst in
the crowd, The band gained plenty of respect as the
singer made a rather impressive lS-foot swan dive
into the audience from the balcony topt No one
thought hetd do it and as a consequence Irll be
watching out for those boys next time around. Very
promising tunes and good entertainers overall.
Next up were Linkin pa*and t have to be honest I
thought they were shite. Basically they are
talentless little boys with a bunch of songs that
sound the same. ll New lfids on the Blockwilh
guitars is your thing then your laughing, but it ain't
mine so I thought they sucked. That's all I have to
say about that really, oh did I mention they suck, oh
yeah, any way |tll move on now.
My only criticism with this track lies in the over
production an paris. The band sound like they have
nothing to hide, but nevertheless they are stuck in a
fog of samples, particularly in the rather disjointed
and effects bound middle eight of the song. The
track definitely is a grower, of which is good for
them because the song will last longer and so should
they. The B-sides aren't quite as good and attempt to
be more poppyr Daisychain has a more bouncy,
bubble-grunge feel, probably a good one to get
crowds at gigs. The other lrack Light the gtassis
weaker and trying to be an effective ballad but it
doesn't suit them.
I would strongly recommend this band to fans of
Placebo and The Smashing pumpkins, as the vocals
and effects are heavily influenced by each of the two
bands. This single shows that Redefine have stacks
of energy as well as being abte to pull off some
gentle moments. A promising single and if they can
pull it off live (without too many effects) they will
definitely be worth checking out.
By Jon Smithson.
A{Rru ?oc,,
9.4opm, lights down with the stage masked by the
White Pony flag, the Deftones made their presence.
The flag dropped and they kicked of a great wall-towall classics show. First track to get us all nicely
moshing was Rootlrom the first album Adrenaline
followed by them .entering the White pony' as Ghino
put it with Feiticeira, Digital bath all the best ones.
The sound was nice and raw aswell as managing to
give out some of the weird effects used on lhe White
Ponytracks owing to their resident DJ/sampter guy.
Lots of energy, loud guitar and Ghino getting the
crowd going is lhe Defttonestsuccessful formula in
keeping the punters happy to which they did very
nicely. They also honourably stopped playing Shove
ithalt way through to sort out various pit members
who were on the floor getting trampted on.
The set consisted of all the best tracks, it was a
dream set for lrue Defitones fans with the likes of
Shove it, Digital bath, Rickets, Be euiet and Drive,
Bored, 7 Words and a suprising encore track,
Headup. The one fault I have with the gig is that we
only got about I hour 2O out of them, of which isnrt
enough really, itts more like a festival slot. I saw
them at Leeds 2OOO and previously Glastonbury on
lhe Around the Furlour and the one thing I was
looking forward to seeing that night was a longer set
(because they were playing their own gig). $till, I
can't complain, damned fine gig. I recommend the
Deftonesto anyone who tikes their music hard and
loud.

Seven up!
ristol foursome Redefine look set to cause a stir as
big as their ear-bleedingly chunky sound with the
release of their debut single 'Seven By Seven'
through local indie Sugarshack. Thanks to foaming-atthe-mouth praise from Steve lamacq, who's been heavily
rotating the hard-as-nails but melodic screamathon on
his Radio One Evening Session, the three-track CD has
attracted 'through the ceiling'pre-sales from record
stores in the UK and beyond. Add to that web sales
direct from SS's heavy traffic generating site, and we
could be looking at serious indie chart action. Not bad
going, especially as the handsomely coiffured quartet
are all still at school.
The single's release highlights a thriving punkcore
scene in Bristol that includes fresh-faced noisenix such
as 2 Day Rule (who've also just signed to Sugarshack),
Five Knuckle Shuffle, The Spartans and Grebo, all of
whom are causing unsightly (but curiously satisfying)
damp patches in the trousers of the major's A&R
braternity. Could it be that punk is the new T***H**?
'Seuen By Seuen'by Redefine is owt on Sat 3 Mar through

Never less than acutely funny, whether improvising or
muttering about dogs in space, Boothby (named after a
Leicestershire market town, apparently) is one of the most
original performers in Britain today. When the jokes are over,
out come the songs - quirky little jewels that have an
idiosyncratic beauty worthy of Syd Barrett or Robyn Hitchcock.
