IMPERIAL COLLEGE LONDON MALAYSIAN NIGHT 2011 IMPERIAL COLLEGE UNION MALAYSIAN SOCIETY OVERVIEW Date: 26 and 27 February 2011 (Saturday, Sunday) Time: 7.00-10.30pm Venue: Great Hall, Sherfield Building, Imperial College London Title of play: “Hero: Wanted” Organized by: Imperial College Union Malaysian Society (ICUMS) ABOUT THE NIGHT Imperial College is not your typical Malaysian Night. It is a union of cultures both east and west, infused with a display of dance, drama and music. We set the benchmark for what has traditionally been the biggest event for Malaysian students studying abroad in the United Kingdom. 1 IMPERIAL COLLEGE UNION MALAYSIAN SOCIETY OUR MOTIVATION To showcase Malaysian culture to the world. To foster relationships between members, as well as serving as a reunion to those who are outside Imperial. To provide members an avenue through which they can express their artistic talents 2 IMPERIAL COLLEGE UNION MALAYSIAN SOCIETY RUN-UP TO MALAYSIAN NIGHT BEHIND THE SCENE The planning of Malaysian Night 2011 started last summer in June 2010, when the skeleton of the production was laid out. Following that, auditions and practices took off in October as soon as the freshers reported to Imperial. Things got more and more vigorous and intensive nearing the event. The whole production involved a total of about 100 students, which included the cast and crew, emcees and ushers. THE PROMOTION The marketing, design and technical team have worked very hard to ensure that our Malaysian Night receive the appropriate level of publicity. We came up with a series of posters, trailers as well as a very interactive website (which can be found on www.icmnite.com) to complement the theme of our play. MALAYSIAN FAIR To top things up, this year we had a Malaysian Fair at the beginning of February to promote our Malaysian Night as well as Malaysian culture to the Imperial community. The event was highly successful and received much attention from students and staffs of Imperial, including the university media team as well as the Head of International Office. 3 IMPERIAL COLLEGE UNION MALAYSIAN SOCIETY THE EVENT THE SHOW The play this year was about a disillusioned superhero and his fight against drugs and alcohol. Most music and sound effects used were composed by our own members. Besides that, various dances were integrated meticulously into the play, both modern and traditional, even futuristic ones such as a UV/Blacklight Performance. We even had a Shadow Dance that incorporated the concept of Wayang Kulit. 4 IMPERIAL COLLEGE UNION MALAYSIAN SOCIETY DIKIR BARAT Imperial College Malaysian Night would not be complete without a performance by our famous Dikir Barat team, which has a reputation of being one of the best in the UK. The act featured lots of familiar Malaysian tunes as well as an interesting selection of songs from the Billboard Charts. LUCKY DRAW PRIZES Attractive lucky draw prizes from our sponsors were given out on both nights. These prizes include Fashion Valet discount vouchers, dinning vouchers from Awana restaurant, discount vouchers and holiday packages from Kelana Convoy, and finally our grand prize - return tickets to Malaysia proudly brought to you by AirAsia. 5 IMPERIAL COLLEGE UNION MALAYSIAN SOCIETY AFTER THE SHOW The audience was treated to some traditional Malaysian food after the show to allow them to experience Malaysia in the way it should be. Nasi Lemak and Kuih Talam were catered by Bonda Café and fully sponsored by Malaysian Kitchen and MARTRADE. Yeo’s packet drinks were prepared as well. 6 IMPERIAL COLLEGE UNION MALAYSIAN SOCIETY THE OUTCOME A grand total of 1200 tickets were sold for two nights.
