water companies pushed to buy or manage
municipal systems at the same time the costs
of maintaining these systems were rising
because of age, which made sales attractive to
small communities across America. Now faced
with sky-rocketing rate increases, these small
towns are struggling to regain control of their
privately owned water systems.
Locally, Oxford is one of those towns with
their water system currently being owned by
the Aquarion Water Company of Massachusetts. In the public water supply business since
1857, Aquarion, based in Bridgeport, Connecticut, is the largest investor-owned water
utility in New England and is among the ten
largest in the United States.
While Oxford continues with legal action,
Aquarion defends its rate increases, stating
it has had to spend money to improve the
infrastructure and as a private company it is
entitled to recover those costs. John Walsh,
Aquarion’s Vice President of Operations for
Massachusetts and Connecticut, said Oxford’s
rates have risen only about 3.4 percent annually since the system was purchased in 2002.
On October 21, 1904, the Town of Oxford
granted permission to the Oxford Water Co.
to exclusively operate a public water supply
system within town boundaries. Although
there were several times since 1904 that the
town considered taking back the water system, it wasn’t until 1977 that they took formal
action.
Following a lengthy series of court decisions
and town meeting appropriations, Oxford
Town Manager Joseph M. Zeneski said they’re
now at a point that he’ll have an article for
the May Town Meeting requesting additional
funds to approve the purchase back from
Aquarion.
Zeneski also said Oxford’s decision is about
providing full service and the best rates.
In the Act of 1904 it states that the corporation must supply the town of Oxford and its
inhabitants with water for the extinguishment
of fires and for domestic, manufacturing, and
other proper purposes. “However,” adds
Zeneski, “Aquarion is not supplying all those
needs as we [Oxford] supply our own water for
fire extinguishment and manufacturing.”
Since the Massachusetts Department of
Public Utilities (DPU) allowed Aquarion to
consolidate all of its five Massachusetts communities, Oxford’s rates have significantly increased. “I think the towns should pay varying
rates because the water for Hingham, Oxford,
Millbury, Hull and North Cohasset all come
from different sources and Oxford is unfairly
subsidizing the needs in other towns. In nine
years our rates have increased 49 percent,”
he said. “And part of that increase is illegal as
Aquarion is passing on the costs of having to
go to court and defend our legal actions.”
According to a 2012 report by Food and
Water Watch, a group that supports public
control of water systems, the privatization
trend is waning. Using Environmental Protection Agency data, the group estimated that
between October 2007 and October 2011
the number of Americans served by privately
owned systems fell 16 percent, while the num-

Oxford-Aquarion water fight continues
Continued from front page
ber served by public ones rose eight percent.
“Communities large and small are increasingly seeking to maintain or revert back to
public control of their water systems,” said
Seth Gladstone, spokesman
for the group. Privatization
raises costs because of the profits
companies must make, while
removing the company allows
local communities to have more
oversight of their systems.
Conversely, Michael Deane,
Executive Director of the National
Association of Water Companies
said, “Although some of the towns attempting
to take over their water systems have received
a lot of attention, other cash-strapped ones
are still turning to private companies.” According to Deane private community water
systems served about 42 million Americans in
2012 while public systems served some 300
million.
Citing a lack of support from both the state
DPU and the Attorney General’s office, Zeneski is frustrated with the very state departments
that are supposed to be helping the residents
of Oxford. “Aquarion doesn’t want to lose this
cash cow and their lobbyist is busy making the
rounds at Beacon Hill,” said Zeneski. “Jennie
Caissie, the Governor’s Councilor representing
the Massachusetts’ 7th District, called me the
other day to tell me they were asking her for
help to change our minds and Martha Coakley
won’t help enforce the Acts of 1904 that state
the company must provide annual reports and
work directly with the Board of Selectmen.”
A takeover isn’t getting any easier for
Oxford, for although the Worcester Superior
Court ruled in December that the
town could purchase Aquarion, according to Zeneski the company is
reluctant to provide key information
or support documentation so the
two sides can agree upon a price.
“We are pleased with the December ruling by Justice Daniel Wrenn,”
said John Walsh.
The ruling stated that Oxford
could purchase its water system back from
Aquarion for $8.12 million as opposed to
the $6.7 million that was previously offered.
Aquarion’s web site does not mention the ongoing legal actions and states only that they
are hoping to continue providing and improving service to the Oxford community.
The additional funds that will be requested
at the May Town Meeting are for the court
ruling as well as the proposed list of assets
as submitted by Aquarion. Zeneski has yet to
have an exact amount but is estimating a final
figure of $9.2 million selling price instead of
the $6.7 million that was previously approved.
It appears that the two sides may still be
oceans apart as to what will be a fair market
value for the assets.

News from Hometown Bank
Celebrating 125 years of community banking, the way banking should be.
March’s Everyday Hometown Hero is the “Unstoppable” Anne Carter Zadig
Our Everyday Hometown Hero for March,
Anne Carter Zadig is clearly not a “one
cause” woman. The Oxford resident is the
kind of individual who sees a need in her
community and quietly goes about filling that
need.
She volunteers at the Friends of Oxford Library book sales and is an active supporter of
the Oxford Ecumenical Food Shelf, where she
can frequently be found helping with the distribution of food on Thursday evenings or
performing even the simplest of useful tasks,
such as finding a jar of sugar-free jam for a diabetic client. Anne Carter is also active in
parish outreach projects at Grace Episcopal
Church where her husband, Fr. Alfred Zadig
is pastor, coordinating a group that makes
prayer shawls for those who are in need of
healing.
According to the individual who nominated
her for this recognition, the “unstoppable”
Anne Carter also may sometimes be found
transporting folks to medical appointments
when they have no other means of getting
there. “She has her own health issues, but that
does not stop her,” she wrote. “She has a large
family of children and grandchildren to care
for, and many to care for within the parish,
but that does not stop her.”
“Both of my parents were involved in volunteer work from my earliest childhood,” Anne
Carter remembered. “We were brought up
thinking it was important to give back. I believe strongly we are all called to give.“
A volunteer in one way or another “for as
long as I can remember,” Ms. Zadig had some
advice for those not already involved in some
form of outreach: “Come and join us! It’s fun!
It’s worthwhile.” And, she says, it can be therapeutic. “If you are going through difficulties
in your life (and we all are at one time or another) spend some time doing something for
someone else and you will feel a whole lot
better!”
A donation of $100 has been made to the Oxford
Ecumenical Food Shelf in Mrs. Zadig’s honor. You

Each month during 2014, Hometown Bank’s 125th anniversary year, we will select one individual to recognize as that month's Everyday Hometown Hero. Hometown Bank will present the honoree with a check in the amount of $100
and will make a $100 donation to the local, non-profit organization chosen by the honoree. Our Everyday Hometown Hero may be anyone who is recognized by his or her community as indispensable because of the contributions they
have made and continue to make. We are especially interested in identifying those individuals who work behind the scenes without much recognition, but who do so much in their own quiet way. Do you have someone in mind who you
think should be recognized as an Everyday Hometown Hero? Visit our website at www.hometowncoop.com for a link to the online nomination form.
Community Shredder Days Announced
According to the Department of Justice, 7% of
U.S. households experience some form of
identity theft each year and 15% of those
cases involve misuse of personal information.
Identity theft is a serious crime. It occurs
when your personal information is stolen
without your knowledge to commit
fraud or other crimes. Identity theft costs you
time and money. It can destroy your credit
and ruin your good name.
The good news is, you can deter identity
thieves by shredding all financial documents
and paperwork with personal information
before you discard them. As part of its commitment to fight identity theft, Hometown
Bank has scheduled a series of Community
Shredder Days at its branch locations
throughout central Massachusetts, beginning
on May 10, 2014 and continuing through the
middle of June, according to Vice President of
Communication, Joe Klimavich.
On Community Shredder Days, a Shred-it
truck with a built-in industrial paper shredder is parked in the bank’s parking lot for an
entire morning. Local residents are encouraged to bring up to 3 boxes of confidential
documents to be shred on-site as they observe.
Community Shredder Days are scheduled
from 9 a.m. to noon on the following Saturdays in May and June: May 10 at the Hometown Bank offices at 131 Main Street in South
Lancaster and 4 Gore Road, Webster; May 17
at the bank’s offices at 331 Main Street, Route
131, in Sturbridge, and June 7, at the Oxford
office located at 31 Sutton Avenue. The final
Community Shredder Day will be held from
9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, June 14 at the
Auburn office located in the Heritage Plaza at
569 Southbridge Street.
“Hometown Bank Community Shredder
Days are offered to all residents of local communities as a public service,” said Klimavich.
“You do not need to be a Hometown Bank
customer to participate.”
Simeone Appointed to
Hometown Lending Position
Hometown Bank has appointed Susan M.
Simeone vice president of retail lending, according to Senior Vice President of Lending
Michael P. Mahlert.
A resident of West Brookfield, with more than
thirty years of experience in residential, consumer and small commercial lending, Ms.
Simeone will be responsible for quality, compliance and profitable origination of residential
and consumer loans.
“We are delighted to have Susan join our lending team,” said Mahlert. “Her knowledge of the
local banking community is extensive and she
has experience in every phase of the lending
process. She will be a tremendous asset to our
customers and employees.”
Ms. Simeone earned a Bachelor of Arts degree
at Framingham State University. She is a director of Worcester Community Housing Resources, Inc. (WCHR) and a member of their

Wind Tiki closes after 40 years
11
Nectarland, Dante’s Inferno also part of building’s history
By Ginger Costen
If you’re planning to have Mother’s Day
dinner at the Wind Tiki Restaurant this year in
Webster, you better make other plans as the
company is closing the last weekend in March
after 40 years of serving some of the best
Chinese food in southern Worcester County.
Wind Tiki opened on April 11, 1974.
Although there were tentative plans earlier
this year for the restaurant to reopen under
new management, according to the property
owner’s spokesperson, Marc Becker, there are
no plans beyond the end of the month. When
asked if there were any pending ideas for the
location he said, “People have called and
asked but as of this moment there’s nothing
solid.”
According to Mr. Becker the Wind Tiki
began as a group of five owners (including
current owner Richard Woo) that quickly grew
into a corporation of 25 owners with multiple
holdings. “It was one of the busiest restaurants in Webster,” said Becker. “My brother
Randy and I worked there as busboys when
we were teenagers.”
A very humble and gracious man, Richard
Woo started as a young partner 40 years ago
and now he’s the last man standing. Beyond
making plans to spend more time with his
family, Woo is looking to relax now that he is
retiring from the restaurant business.
The original restaurant business at 154
Thompson Road was Nectarland Dairy Bar,
owned by Marc’s father Herman.
A 16 year-old Herman Becker began with
Nectar Products in 1946 when he was hired
by Jacqueline (Leboeuf) Puliafico to drive
delivery trucks from their store on the corner
of Barnes and School Streets in Webster. In
the 1950s Herman Becker and the Leboeuf
family purchased the property on Thompson
Road to manufacture ice cream. “My Father
was always in competition with Hood Ice
Cream and they’d deliver Nectar Ice Cream
throughout the area on five Old King Cole ice
cream trucks.
Nectarland soon grew into more than a dairy
and ice cream stand. Along with car hops to
deliver fast food meals to the cars parked out
front, a full service menu was also offered inside the restaurant. Families played miniature
golf outside and the location almost immediately became a favorite spot on hot summer
nights for both teens and adults.
“Later my father added a convenience store
and also delivered fast food items when the
Old King Cole trucks became canteens to the
area’s mills and Thompson Speedway,” said
Becker. The Beckers also developed a line of
frozen foods called Primo Pizza after Herman
Becker’s father, known as Papa B, joined the
company as the kitchen manager.
Before it was Wind Tiki, the property was
known as Dante’s Inferno and was managed
by Justin Dante. From about 1965 to1973
Dante specialized in serving a steak house
menu until a fire partially destroyed the eating
and kitchen areas.
In 1964 Herman Becker’s attention shifted
to forming Sterling Realty and other business
ventures which ultimately brought an end
to Nectarland and the sale of the business.
(Nectar Ice Cream had been previously sold to Hood Ice Cream in the
1950s).
“What will happen only time will
tell - a lot of people have expressed
an interest in the location,” said Marc
Becker. But one thing that he is sure
won’t be going in to the location is
another Nectarland.
Reflecting back on the businesses,
Becker added “A lawyer wants their
kid to grow up and be a doctor. A
doctor wants his child to be a lawyer.
But a restaurateur wants his children
to be businessmen.”
For the record, neither Marc Becker
nor Randy Becker became restaura-

teurs. Marc did follow in his father’s
footsteps as a successful partner in
Sterling Realty, as well as serving
as Webster’s Assessor since 2004.
Randall Becker has been with Commerce Insurance since the 1980s
and now serves as an Executive Vice
President and Chief Financial Officer
of the Mapfre/Commerce Insurance
Company.

Thank you
To the Webster Board of Selectmen, Town Administrator and Town of Webster
On April 11, 1974, the original group of five partners, with the late Floyd Yuen as front
man, held the grand opening at 154 Thompson Road, known then and since, as the Wind
Tiki. Webster’s first Chinese restaurant of note, it filled the spot once occupied by the
famous Nectarland Dairy Bar and Dante’s Inferno. Adding on to the building to increase
square footage and seating capacity helped keep up with the flourishing business as the
people of Webster, Dudley, Oxford, Thompson, Rhode Island and beyond became steady
customers. Forty years ago, we could have never foreseen the longevity we have enjoyed.
Our loyal staff, many of whom have been with us for decades, has worked diligently to be
conscientious and responsible in providing quality food and service to our customers.
Thanks and appreciation go at this time to the Becker family for their love and support
through the years especially the late Herman Becker, who had faith from the beginning.
We are so very thankful for the scores of people who have worked at the restaurant
through the years. To the cooks, waitresses, hostesses, managers, bartenders, bus people,
and especially all our loyal patrons, past and present, you will always be members of the
Wind Tiki family.
Personally, I have been part of this community for almost half of my lifetime. While there
are always challenges in maintaining a business, my time here and the people I have met
here have impacted my life in many positive ways and in looking back through the years, I
am extremely grateful.
The future is yet to be unfolded, but we wish whoever occupies the space at 154
Thompson Road in Webster, the same success and satisfaction we have enjoyed there.
Thank you very much for this honor.
Sincerely, Richard Woo

Reading obituaries: how one life ended
AT THE
END
OF THE
DAY
BY GINGER COSTEN
Comedians have told jokes about it and
Pete Seeger even put it to music when he
recorded the anonymously written poem, My
Get-Up-And-Go Has Got Up and Went. But
surprisingly, it wasn’t until I was doing research
for this column that I learned it was none other
than Benjamin Franklin that is actually credited
with making the statement, “I wake up every
morning at nine and grab for the morning
paper. Then I look at the obituary page. If my
name is not on it, I get up.”

I too read the obituaries. But as I’ve aged, this
morning ritual has changed becoming more of
a matter of my own mortality. Am I reaching
the median age of those listed in the paper or
am I still good for a couple more years? This
changed a couple of weeks ago when something made me consider just how different
each life not only is lived, but also ends.
It started with a visit to an estate sale in Danielson, Connecticut. The house was built in
the 1960s and like hundreds of others, it was
simple but comfortable. At first the contents
held nothing of great importance, offering
only a few items that I could use at the office.
Then we noticed an aged manila envelope
that so far had no particular value to the other
potential buyers. Inside were the entire military records for Lt. F. A. Ward, USNR-R.
If for nothing else but the vintage patches
inside, we felt the five dollars was a good
investment. But as we read about his life,
Dr. Ward became a person and not just the
reasoning behind a few final actions necessary
to legally put another life to rest. Suddenly,
I wanted to know everything I could about
the man who lived, instead of the nameless
person who was now having the entire sum of
his existence affixed to a price tag for others
to haggle over on a cold winter morning in
Connecticut.
From his record I knew that he had been
born in Louisiana in 1929. He’d become a
dental surgeon in 1957 and served his country
aboard the U.S.S. Glacier and U.S.S. Yosemite
in the 1950s. Amongst other awards, I chuckled when I read that on 13 October, 1958,
Dr. Ward crossed the Equator at 870-45’W
and was accepted and duly initiated into the
“Solemn Mysteries of the Ancient Order of the
Deep.” And on 25 January, 1959 he “rounded
the dread Cape Horn and according to the
Ancient Lore of the Sea and now he may truly
call himself a Mariner and is allowed to chew
tobacco and spit to Winward.”
I didn’t think it was funny that so much
personal (everything from his military and
medical records to his social security number)
information was so apathetically sold to com-

Mission: Youth Outreach
provides help to
families under stress
WEBSTER-DUDLEY - The Boys & Girls Club
of Webster - Dudley is pleased to announce
that we have been selected to participate in
The Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s: Mission:
Youth Outreach.
Mission: Youth Outreach is a unique partnership between Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, and Boys & Girls Clubs of America
providing children from families of reserve and
active duty personnel with FREE membership
at their local Boys & Girls Club. The Clubs give
young people a safe place to go, staffed with
caring adults. In addition to FREE membership
funding has been set aside to assist with Summer Camp, Field Trips or other expenses.
In this time of global conflict, military families need our support. More than two-thirds
of active duty military families live off-post.
Mission: Youth Outreach provides a powerful, yet easy way to help families under
stress. Children in these families face special
challenges, from long separations to worries
about parents’ safety. These youth need the
stability and predictability of Boys & Girls Club
programs. They need the caring guidance that
Club staff provide. And they need the chance
to relax and have fun – all while trying new
activities, learning new skills and exploring
career paths.
Attention all military families! The Boys &
Girls Clubs of Webster - Dudley is providing FREE Club memberships for families with
caregivers who are National Guard, reserve,
active, deployed or returning military personnel. To register of for more information please

ActiveTemps:
A new name for
the temp agency
WEBSTER – Local resident Don Bourque has
renamed and expanded Absolute Staffing,
the temporary staffing agency he founded
with a partner six years ago. As of March 2,
he’s the sole owner of ActiveTemps, established as a new business, with offices in
Leominster as well as
Webster.
Both ActiveTemps
offices will continue
to employ temp-tohire workers in the
light industrial, hospitality, and clerical
areas, employing 70
workers weekly. Other services include
direct hire placement
and contract staffing.
The agency has been
growing and now
Shelley Cull of Rave
has six sales and reReviews Recruiting
cruiting members on
has co-located her
staff. “My long-term
company with Activegoal is to have five
offices in the region,
Temps in Webster
including Rhode
Island and Connecticut,” Mr. Bourque said.
ActiveTemps has also expanded the scope
of services at the Webster location with the
addition of Rave Reviews Recruiting, an
executive recruitment firm run by Shelley
Cull. Ms. Cull, who has more than 25 years of
experience in both executive “headhunting”
and restaurant consulting, specializes in management- level hiring. She and her husband
Ray moved to Webster from Ohio last August,
when he was recruited to Rogers Corporation
in Woodstock.
The move was “huge,” she said. “I left my
whole life behind in Ohio, all my family and
friends. It was scary, but it’s a new adventure.
We love being by the Lake.”
“Having both ActiveTemps and Rave Reviews Recruiting in the same location will allow
us to refer clients to each other and provide
the best of both services,” said Mr. Bourque.
Branding for the new ActiveTemps agency
name was done by Dan Marcoux, owner of
Daisy Print in Webster and the new website
www.ActiveTemps.net was developed by Lucas Perzan, owner of Insation Technologies in
Webster. ActiveTemps is located at 269 Main

plete strangers. Where was his family? Didn’t
anyone care about this man or hold value for
who he was?
According to the obituary published in the
Norwich Bulletin on September 13, 2013, Dr.
Ward was survived by a sister in Niantic. There
was no mention of a family, children or wife;
no calling hours and the burial was private.
Dr. Francis A. Ward, D.D.S., practiced dentistry in Gales Ferry, CT, from 1960-1999. He
was a member of the Black Hills Golf Club and
the local, state, and national dental associations. Wasn’t there anyone alive today who felt
Dr. Ward deserved even a moment of time to
reflect his life?
I’ve seen his home and he certainly didn’t
live a lavish lifestyle. He seemed to be an
understated man but he had lived his life in
service to others.
My father may not have been alive long
enough to teach me everything, but one thing
I did learn from day one was when your life on
earth is over, the important question will not
be, “How much wealth did you leave?” It will
be, “What did you leave in the way of service
or through giving that blessed others?”
Thank you, Dr. Francis A. Ward, for serving

WEBSTER - Mark Mandeville & Raianne
Richards will have a CD release signing for
“Hard Times & Woes” on Saturday, April 19th,
from 10:30 a.m.-12 p.m. at Booklovers’ Gourmet, 55 East Main Street. Call 508-949-6232
for more info.
Mark Mandeville & Raianne
Richards are a folk duo from
Massachusetts whose songs
resonate with the lover of
Americana and old country
music, commanding familiar
traditional melodies and poignant, introspective lyrics, and
backing them with delicate arrangements on ukulele, clarinet,
guitar and banjo. They began
in the basements, coffee shops
and art spaces of New England, and have since tested the
stages of more traditional folk
music venues, colleges, living rooms and bar
rooms from Boston to Austin, Denver to Nashville, Asheville to Portland, and back ‘round
again. Hundreds of concerts have been given
and thousands of records have been sold, all
on their own steam and without the support of
major industry assistance.
In 2011, Mandeville and Richards began
rehearsing with pedal steel/dobro player Peter
Hart and multi-instrumentalist
Doug Williamson, among others, to release a collection of
songs as Mark Mandeville &
Old Constitution. This album
stands alone, containing both
folk rock arrangements and the
sparse bluegrass-country tinged
songs expected from the duo’s
recent performances, with the
gamut at times drifting into the
mainstream. The final cut, indie
rock ballad Sleep When You’re
Dead, was recently used in the
film “March Sisters At Christmas” (2012) which aired on the
Lifetime network, while the more traditional
bluegrass Take A Little Home has been in
steady rotation on regional folk radio.

SOUTHBRIDGE – In a continued effort to raise community
awareness about heart health,
Harrington HealthCare System
recently presented Southbridge Indoor Cycling with an
Automated External Defibrillator (AED) -- a portable unit
designed to assist in the event
of a cardiac arrest.
“To have this life-saving
technology in our studio is really wonderful and reassuring,”
said Carlos Garcia, owner of
Southbridge Indoor Cycling,
located on Hamilton Street.
“We are thankful for the generosity of Harrington.”
The AED was purchased

Harrington uses its portion of the money to
provide critical equipment and patient educational materials that support heart health
awareness in Cardiac Rehab and the local
communities.
According to the American Heart Association, sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) is a leading
cause of death in the United States. Each
year, emergency medical services treat about
360,000 victims of SCA before they reach
a hospital. Fewer than 10 percent of those
victims survive. An AED is the only effective
treatment for restoring a regular heart rhythm
during sudden cardiac arrest.
In 2013, Southbridge Indoor Cycling was a
major sponsor for Harrington’s Ride to Rebuild
bike ride to benefit its Webster campus
Emergency Department campaign. Along
with their sponsorship, Garcia and 21 of his
members participated in the event as well.
Harrington saw a great fit in giving back
when Garcia expressed a need for heart-saving medical equipment.
Garcia and several of his employees were
trained in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation
(CPR) by Harrington instructor Jon Gorman.
He also taught the proper use of an AED for
cardiac emergencies. Gorman is organizing
many training events in support of the American Heart Association’s HEARTSAFE community initiative.
Harrington Scores
In Top 10 In
Hospital Survey
SOUTHBRIDGE – Harrington HealthCare
System has ranked #7 out of more than 60
Massachusetts hospitals surveyed by GoLocalWorcester.com.
The survey studied 176 hospitals in New
England, according to patient feedback. Harrington rated in the top third of all hospitals
in the list.
“We are happy to see our high standards for
patient quality and satisfaction has given us a
strong ranking in this survey,” said Kathleen
Davis, RN, MSN, Vice President for Quality,
Patient Safety and Risk Management at Harrington HealthCare System. “Our goal is to
continue to raise the bar and give our patients
the best possible healthcare experience across
all measures.”
GoLocalWorcester.com, an online hub for
local news, entertainment, health and lifestyle
articles, researched more than 50,000 surveys
from the Hospital Consumer Assessment of
Healthcare Providers and Systems, (HCAHPS).
The HCAHPS is a government sponsored
survey that looks at the patient experience
over several metrics.
GoLocalWorcester examined eight key domains within the HCAHPS questions, including
cleanliness of the patient’s room and communication with the doctor. The site’s researchers
then applied a proprietary weighting and formula, tabulating patients’ ratings. Those final
sums determined each hospital’s ranking.
The full survey ranking and methodology
can be found by visiting www.golocalworcester.com.

Welcome to Webster: Rev. Robert Fredrickson joins Holy Trinity Parish
Local veterans and Sen. Moore participate in welcoming Fr. Robert Fredrickson to Webster.
By Barbara Van Reed
WEBSTER – When the Rev. Robert M.
Fredrickson was assigned to be pastor of the
Holy Trinity Parish last summer, he wasted no
time immersing himself in the new community and its many facets. He relocated from
Manchester, Connecticut, to Webster and
soon became the chaplain for the Webster
Fire Department as well, stopping by the fire
house daily. His wife Julie, a financial officer
with Travelers Insurance, stayed in Manchester
during the week.
“Living here in the community allows me to
be among the people,” he said. Rev. Fredrickson doesn’t see himself as a Bible thumper,
but mandated to “lead a Christlike life among
men.”
Father Robert also joined the Webster-Dudley Veterans Council and participates in all the
functions with which the council is involved,
such as military funerals. It’s an outreach that
comes naturally: he served in the US Navy

players, Kevin Stacom and Joe Hassett. All
three are now part of the Friar Legends Forever Tradition, which began in 1996 to honor
players and coaches who made a significant
impact on Friar basketball and earned national
recognition during their careers at Providence.
While Lis has received many awards for
her basketball achievements, she said, “This
one was personally most satisfying. Many of
my friends and customers from Waterfront’s
rented limos and came to Providence to see
me receive it.”
Lis, a native of Danielson, Conn., was one
of the greatest players to ever wear a Friar uniform. She played for the Providence College
women’s basketball team from 1988-92, and
is the program’s all-time leading scorer with
2,534 career points. She is the only Friar to
eclipse the 2,000-point plateau in the history
of the program. Lis also ranks fifth in career
rebounding with 821 boards. She also ranks
fourth all-time among BIG EAST Conference
career leaders in points (1,296), ninth in scoring average (19.6 ppg), third in free throws
made (302), ninth in steals (183) and 11th in
field goals made (455) in conference action. In
1990, she led the Friars to the program’s first

from 1976 to 1980. He was part of an aviation
wing, the VF-14 Fighter Squadron which was
stationed on the John F. Kennedy aircraft carrier. After his military tour he began a successful
career in the insurance industry, but eventually
decided to become a priest, something he
had thought about for many years.
“What I feel strongly about is bringing the
church to the community.” said Father Robert.
“That was the foundation of Christ’s teaching.”
Thus he views his work in the community as
an extension of his religious ministry. He goes
where he’s needed, and was there to perform
the last rites for five puppies that perished in a
house fire in January.
Being a Christian isn’t always easy, he says.
“Even to speak of God is a challenge. We’ve
been stigmatized.” But he recognizes that
“we hear God’s voice only when we are ready
to hear it.”
Holy Trinity Parish was established in
Webster in 1903 and is part of a union of
independent Catholic churches known as the
Polish National Catholic Church (PNCC). The
denomination was founded in 1897 by Polish
Americans who severed relations with the
Roman Catholic Church because of property
ownership disagreements and the lack of
Polish-speaking clergymen.
Holy Trinity in Webster was an 800-member
congregation at one time, but after 15 years
without a priest, had just 11 parishioners
when Father Robert came. By the time he was
officially installed as its pastor in February, attendance had increased significantly.
Robert Fredrickson was raised an Episcopalian, and explained that in the 1970s,
when women’s ordination came about in that
denomination, he started seeking another
place to worship. He became an Anglican and
was ordained as a priest in that denomination in 2003, serving in Manchester. By 2010,
the Anglican community was also discussing women’s ordination, and Father Robert
subsequently found a relationship with the
Polish National Church. He spent the last two
years as pastor of Saint John’s PNC Church in
Manchester.
The Polish National Church differs from the
Roman Catholic Church in several respects:
A welcome cake for Fr. Fredrickson
priests can be married, it is non-papal (not
under the jurisdiction of the Pope), and local
parishes own and control their own property.
Father Robert is married to his childhood
sweetheart Julie, who spends her weekends
in Webster now. They have two married
daughters, Amy in Connecticut and Stacey in
Florida.

State veterans secretary tells PAV audience 21st century
veterans’ service will be locally delivered
BOSTON – “The delivery of services
to veterans is shifting from the postWorld War II model of large central
veteran’s hospitals to home and
community based delivery,” State Secretary of Veterans’ Services Coleman
Nee told more than 100 veterans and
their families and guests on Sunday.
Secretary Nee was the principal
speaker at the 50th Annual WebsterDudley Polish American Veterans (PAV)
Communion Breakfast.
Secretary Nee, a veteran of the U. S.
Marine Corps during Operation Desert
Storm, explained that today’s veterans
differ from those who came home after
World War II. “During World War II,”
Secretary Nee stated, “more than one
million Massachusetts men and women
came back needing services, but the
wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have only
produced about 45,000 Bay State veterans.” He said that today’s veterans
want their services delivered closer
to home through their local veterans’
service officer and groups like the PAV.
Nee said that veterans’ services in
Massachusetts are the best of any
state, “thanks to the Legislature and,
especially, Senator Moore, who is a
terrific advocate for our veterans,”
Sen. Richard T. Moore, D-Uxbridge,
was Master of Ceremonies for the
event.
The day began with the celebration
of Mass at St. Joseph’s Basilica followed by breakfast at the PAV quarters
on Ray Street. A color guard from the
national award winning Oxford Naval
Junior ROTC (NJROTC) presented
the colors at the beginning of the
breakfast. The unit was led by Cadet
Commander Dylan Bordeau, along
with Cadets Ivonn Rodriguez, Austin
Hewko, and Michael Guertin.
Sen. Moore asked all present to

memory of the founders of the Annual

Coach Michael J. Vendetti died on March
20th, leaving behind a strong army of believers who will continue to carry his message and
share his legacy. His wife, Joan, passed away
in January 2012 after a lifetime struggle with
Lupus. Coach V leaves three sons and their
wives and seven granchildren. This space was
a favorite for Vendetti and his accomplishments through the years. What made the
Vendetti Era at Nichols unique was that it will
never be done again. It’s that simple. The
Vendetti Way should be the Nichols athletics
way today. Be accountable, work hard, and
leave your ego at the door. Let’s continue with
simply saying that Coach Vendetti was the
“best.” He shared his human condition with
everyone who came into contact with him.
He made life fun. Sure, there were ups and
downs, twists and turns, peaks and valleys, but
Coach Vendetti had a faith that was effective
by the way he applied his beliefs to the daily
grind and the way he treated people.
To some, Coach will be remembered only
as a football coach because of his great accomplishments at Nichols College. Five New
England Conference Championships in a span
of seven years back in the seventies when Division 3 football was a select few and not watered down with every state school having a
football program like it is today. But to anyone
who really knew him, he was much more than
a football coach. His physical presence got
your attention from the start. An All American
tackle at Boston University and a Leominster
High School Hall of Famer, the 6’ 4’’ Vendetti
didn’t have to say much.First impressions are
always a good measuring stick and humility
became this giant of a man’s way of life.
Vendetti was at his best when he delegated
authority to those who deserved it. Coach
never looked for credit, but he always gave it
out. His assistant coaches and players came
to believe in this way of being unselfish. He
put you in your place in an understanding
way. It was the perfect way to build any type
of organization, let alone a football program.
Give credit, rely on the people you believe
in and success wil follow. Coach would say
everyday, ”let’s practice to win.” There’s a big
difference in practicing to win than playing to
win. Winning was automatic on Saturdays after
practicing for five days under Vendetti’s watch.
The pressure on game day wasn’t even a
thought after going through Vendetti’s weeklong routine. Games were easy compared to
practice. Vendetti’s teams were always in better physical and mental shape than Saturday’s
opponent. Do your job within Vendetti’s Way
guranteed success. Organization, delegation, and a work
ethic second to none were the
ingredients of the championship Nichols College football
teams of the seventies.
The supporting cast of loyal
assistant coaches Ed Kunkel
and Rene Langevin and the
works of Bates Craver, Bruce
Baker, and Paul K. Brown were
important to Vendetti’s system
as were the expert scouting
Vin Becker, Buddy Langevin,
and Gerry Kunkel.
Hal Chalmers, then the
athletic director, supported
Vendetti’s blue print for Nichols’ success. Joan Vendetti and
sons Michael, Mark, and Paul
were all part of the “golden
era” of the seventies and the
greatest time ever at Nichols
College.
The Vendetti’s lived on
campus next to the Chalmers
and morning coffee was had
at Bazzie’s. If you wanted a
hair cut, Mike Pio had a chair
outside of Bazzie’s and visited the campus
on Thursday nights. After the victories on
Saturdays, the Vendettis hosted the post
game victory party. The key moment was
when Channels 4, 5, and 7 flashed the Nichols
football score on the television screen. It was
a very special time for the Nichols community.
The scouts would then present Vendetti with
their report and work began for the upcoming
week. Anybody involved in Vendetti’s world
during this great era in Nichols history shared
in the hard-earned championships with pride.
Vendetti’s moral compass was full of sincere
compassion. He understood people and had
a quick wit about him. He never shied away
or apologized for his opinion about the things
he knew and believed in. The former Bison
Bowl on the Nichols campus was renamed the
Michael J. Vendetti Field in 2004 and there is
a special bench named “Vendetti’s View” that
overlooks Vendetti field and a place where
Vendetti would sit during his retirement days
to recall his memories of his many years at
Nichols.
Vendetti has touched so many lives in a
positive way and made Nichols College a
Peter and Mike
proud place. He leaves a loyal army that will
never forget its leader. Coach V was the best
and until we meet again, may the sunshine on
Joan and you forever.

Lindsey was rescued with her three newborn babies from a woman who was going
to abandon them and other cats in a
filthy and disgusting apartment. Lindsey
and her babies went into a foster home
where they were raised with other cats,
dogs, a rabbit, and a ferret besides children. Lindsey is a nice kitty but prefers
to show affection on her own terms. She
is a nice quiet girl and would probably
like a home without other animals as she
appears to be quite a diva.
Lindsey is up to date on vaccinations,

A “bunching” strategy
could cut your taxes
We all face one important tax question: to itemize
deductions or take the standard deduction? For 2014,
the standard deduction is $12,400 for married couples and
$6,200 for single filers. If you’re on the borderline, consider
a “bunching” strategy. You bunch deductions into one year
and choose to itemize; then the following year when you
have fewer deductions, you take the standard deduction.

Cumberland’s Strange Request
By Thomas D’Agostino,
from A History of Vampires in New England
Town Council meetings can have some pretty strange requests. Sometimes it is a noise
ordinance to stop peacocks from screeching.
It may be a citizen who does not like certain
signs posted or parking on a street. One of
the strangest requests comes early in our nation’s history. The request was at the very first
town council meeting held in Cumberland,
Rhode Island, on February 8, 1796. This is how
it is written.
“Mr. Stephen Staples of Cumberland ap-
peared before this council and prayed
that he might have liberty granted

dofter (daughter) Abigail Staples late of

deasent (decent) manner.”
That is what was entered into town records.
We know that Abigail Staples was born January 26, 1773, and died about 1795, most likely
of consumption. Consumption is what we now
call tuberculosis. Whole families were wiped
out by the malady that held New England in
a grip of fear for over a century. The people
feared that those who died from the disease
were returning in spirit and feeding upon
the surviving members of the family and
as long as the body remained whole or
decomposing in the grave the spirit would
feed upon the living and return to the grave
to nourish the body.
Thus they were called “spectral ghouls”
and the only way to stop the ghouls from
their nightly carnage was to exhume the
body, cut out the vitals and burn them.
In many cases, the ashes of the burned
remains were fed to the sick with medicine.
This hysteria lasted until 1892 as far as we
Get ready to garden!
By Debra Horan
Owner, Booklovers’ Gourmet, Webster, MA
www.bookloversgourmet.com
Though it may not seem like it outside,
spring is coming! Now is the time to start
planning and preparing for garden season in
New England. Whether your interest lies in
flowers, vegetables or herbs, there are numerous titles out there to help guide you.
For some basic gardening tips try Trowel &
Error: Over 700 Shortcuts, Tips & Remedies
for the Gardener by Sharon Lovejoy. Some of
the tips include sprinkling baby powder on
seedlings to deter rabbits, cure plant viruses
with milk, take a shower with your houseplants
and use empty citrus fruit rinds as seedling
pots. Weedless Gardening by Lee Reich
introduces a system of gardening from the top
down that protects the soil, eliminates heavy
work and reduces water needs. Perfect for a
low maintenance way to enjoy your garden!
If organic gardening is your thing, check
out The Woodchuck’s Guide to Gardening by
Ron Krupp, a Vermont organic gardener who
Surely goodness and mercy shall
follow me all the days of my life;
and I shall dwell in the house of
theLord forever.
Psalm 23
know, terminating with the case of Mercy
Brown in Exeter, Rhode Island.
Incidentally, there is no record of what Mr.
Chace did or the outcome of the “experiment.” The Staples lot in Cumberland has
many fieldstone markers so the exact whereabouts of the grave is also lost to antiquity.
So, next time you attend a town council
meeting think about the strange requests from
citizens and think back to the request once
asked in Cumberland. I am sure they will not
compare.
Tom D’Agostino and his wife Arlene Nicholson have written numerous books about
paranormal activity in New England, including
Haunted Vermont, Haunted Massachusetts,
and Haunted Rhode Island. They live in Connecticut.
Books to help you grow your best
focuses on our relationship with the natural
world. Filled with lessons learned as well as
surprises and frustration, it connects us with
other gardeners and their discoveries. It is
great for the beginner as well as the more
experienced gardener.
The Beginner’s Guide to Edible Herbs: 26
Herbs Everyone Should Grow & Enjoy by
Charles W.G. Smith and Herbal Tea Gardens:
22 Plans for Your Enjoyment & Well-Being by
Marietta Marshall Marcin show the direct connection between health and gardening using
common herbs. The best part about them? All
you need are a few pots and a sunny room,
deck or porch to get growing and you’ll be
reaping the benefits in no time! For something
completely different there is New York Times
bestseller The Drunken Botanist: The Plants
that Create the World’s Great Drinks by Amy
Stewart. This “spirited toast to the marriage of
botany and booze” explores the plant origins
of sake, scotch, tequila, rum and bourbon as
well as other herbs, flowers, trees and fruits
that have inspired other human concoctions.
Time to get digging!
Booklovers’ Gourmet celebrated it’s 19th
anniversary in March. Owner Deb Horan is
looking forward to a big celebration next
year. “I’ve enjoyed being able to provide the
local community with good books and reading advice and hope to continue for many
more,” she said. Besides selling good books,
Deb also sells good coffee. Booklovers’ Gourmet is a great gathering place for people who
want to meet and chat, to spend time relaxing with friends over coffee.

We’re finally into April, and for most of the country,
that means the start of a welcome change from a
cold and difficult winter. As the snow melts and the
temperature warms, it’s time to start getting ready
for the growing season that’s about to begin.
Bring out the lawnmower and prepare it for its first
use. In the fall, you should have removed or emptied
the gas tank, removed the
spark plug, and removed
the mower blades for cleaning and storage; now it’s
time to put those back on.
Start by installing the
blades and brushing away
old grass cuttings and dirt
from the underside of the
mower, then turn the mower upright and fill the tank
with fresh gasoline or the correct gas-oil mixture.
Install the spark plug. Roll the mower outside, prime
the motor (either using a priming button if it has
one, or by tugging the starter cord twice), and start

the lawnmower. Run it for a few minutes, testing the
throttle and other settings, then shut it down and store
it in an accessible place, ready to mow the lawn.
Once the danger of hard frost has passed, shrubs
and small trees that were wrapped in burlap over the
winter can be unwrapped. Any bulbs that were planted
or went dormant in the fall, such as tulips, will begin
showing green shoots soon. Trees are beginning to
bud and bloom, so avoid pruning them until the leaves
are fully open. (c) 2014 King Features Synd., Inc.

Springtime Lemonade
Spring can’t get here soon enough as far
as I’m concerned! Garden beds are eagerly
waiting for me to plant my beloved flowers,
and my husband is getting itchy to start mowing our lawn again. But by putting this easy
lemonade on the menu, we’ll just have to wait
until Mother Nature allows the “real thing” to
arrive!

Has your business improved with the “shop local” movement?
Somewhat.
Why did you decide to locate in the Webster-Dudley Area?
I am a full-time working artist who lives in Webster
Please share an interesting experience about your business.
I love to create my teaching videos as much as teaching people
to enjoy something I believe is good for their health and well
being.
WDBA Events Planned
The WDBA has some exciting upcoming events to tell you
about. Please join us if you can!
On Saturday, April 26 WDBA will be holding its Annual
Earth Day cleanup in the Webster/Dudley area. This year
they’ve added a special Earth Day concert featuring local
musicians to be held at the Webster Town Hall that same
evening from 6-8 p.m. as a thank you for all volunteers and
the community at large. Papa Gino’s will provide pizzas with all
proceeds going to the cleanup.
On Saturday, May 17 the Annual Sidewalk Sale Event in
downtown Webster will take place. Stay tuned for more
details.
The artists display their masterpieces.
How long has your business been in existence? One year.
Do you have a business goal you would like to share with us?
My goal is to help others by supporting non-profits with my
painting parties. We want to connect with our community and will
volunteer to create painting events. We will donate 30% of each
ticket sold. We will do it for non-profits in both Massachusetts
and Rhode Island.
What marketing tools do you find effective?
Mostly advertising inside the restaurants themselves, and posting my events on local event calendars and word of mouth.
Where do you see your business a year or two from now?
Busy!
In closing, do you have a favorite quote or motto to share?
“My mission is to help build confidence in others. My goal is to
trigger one’s inner-self we all experienced as children when creating. Mostly to encourage others to discover how they can reduce
stress and relax to entertainment that feeds the soul.”
The Painting Party Connection is located at 12 S. Point Rd.,
Webster. Hours are Sun.-Thurs. 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.
