MOTA-ENGIL PERU
MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN
Continuously caring
for our people
2011 was the year of consolidation for the MOTA-ENGIL Group,
particularly taking into account that the difficulties arising due to the
world economic crisis have been overcome, especially in Europe.
It should be noted that at the beginning of 2012, the business group
has 70% of its contracted projects outside of Portugal, and the African,
American and Central European markets are gaining importance.
We would also like to point out that, despite the international crisis, our
group continues to have a sustained growth rate from year to year.
This result is expected to be repeated during 2012, sustaining the
strong growth in the international markets, among which Peru stands
out favorably.
Mota-Engil Perú continues to diversify its activities as a contracting
and investment firm in the energy, water, sewer, waste treatment, port,
airport, railway, highway, mining, metalworking, geotechnical, real
estate, aggregate, asphalt and concrete sectors, which is a clear
reflection of the level of investment being attained.
For the year 2012, our motivation will be “Continuously caring for our
people”, an important challenge to undertake within the company in
line with our continuous improvement policy. Due to the characteristics
of our projects, our employees tend to relocate for long periods of time
to places with complicated geographic conditions that make access
difficult. For this reason, Mota-Engil Perú management has charged
those responsible for the different areas to provide increasingly better
lodging, meals, transportation and working conditions for all of them.

INTERVIEW
Hugo Torres Soria
Head of tenders
How did you come to join Mota-Engil Perú?
I joined the company in 2001, when it had a different name but had already been bought by the Mota-Engil Group. Later, business started picking
up and the company became known as the contracting firm in charge of civil works in general and earth movement, due to the large number of
public and private calls for tenders held at that time.
What differences have you seen since you joined the company?
The name change to Mota-Engil Perú gives the company a stronger identity and we're better recognized and identified as part of the Mota-Engil
Group. Today, Mota-Engil Perú is stronger and able to compete with the largest companies in the national and international market.
What progress have you noted since you joined the company?
Definitely it had sustained growth year after year. We are doing a better job of fulfilling our clients' needs with a wider range of options, a structured
analysis approach and modern technology. In addition, we have technical exchange support from our head office.
For example, when I joined the company, it was billing about $ 25 million. With the restructuring and revamping of the organization, forecasted
sales have risen to over $ 300 million for this year. The staff of professionals has also been improved with top-notch personnel, and we continue to
maintain an equipment pool that strengthens us in comparison with our competitors.
What do you do in the company?
Basically I put together and present proposals, according to the parameters established by our organization's clients.
It's important to be very careful in this activity, considering the high standard we maintain in the preparation of each proposal.
What is your opinion of the training the company provides for employees?
It's very good and on-target. We should be grateful for the great effort Mota-Engil Perú makes to provide on-going training and courses for its
personnel in the different areas of the company.
The trips made to our head office are also very useful for exchanging knowledge and learning about the projects undertaken by the Mota-Engil
Group. The infrastructure and construction projects executed in Portugal are very advanced; in this way, their experience is shared with us so that
at some point, we can carry out projects of a similar magnitude in our country.
What do you appreciate most about working for Mota-Engil Perú?
It is a dependable, fair company that gives its workers good benefits, particularly in the humanistic aspect, as I can attest. I would like to emphasize
the directors' great drive regarding the diversification and execution of projects. Despite the fact that it is a relatively young company, today we are
mentioned and known as a company that meets the deadlines agreed upon with its clients, which makes me very proud to belong to this team of
professionals.

SAFETY
“Safe hands” campaign
From July to December of 2011, the “Safe
hands” campaign was held by the routine
maintenance area with the participation of all
areas of Mota-Engil Perú in the development of
organizational controls to make hand
protection sustainable over time.
The strategy for the campaign's success began
with hazard and risk research (HRR) in the
different areas of the company. The
dissemination of the results was carried out
using three “Learn by doing” methodologies:
auditory, visual and kinesthetic dissemination.
Through talks and training at every level on the
“front line”, auditory dissemination began in
order to achieve understanding of IPER, as well
as the dissemination of three safety alerts.
Subsequently, relevant matters that affected or
could affect hands were summarized and
awareness-raising messages were broadcast
by Radio Yanacancha.
Strategically placed banners and posters were
used during the visual dissemination. In
addition, talks were given and safety alerts
were distributed by electronic mail and posted
on bulletin boards.
For the kinesthetic dissemination, the design
and execution of manual activities were
considered in order to make the employees
understand how their daily lives would be if they
had only one hand.
To close the campaign, a motivational and
awareness-raising campaign was held with the
participation of everyone involved.
The results of the campaign include: reduction
of frequency and severity indices, creation of
the “recipe for caring for hands” and others that
show the staff's continuous improvement
commitment to accident prevention.
Workplace exercises
We know that Mota-Engil Perú's employees are
its most important asset and, aware that
performance, safety and welfare contribute to
the objectives established by the company, the
decision was made to start the Workplace
Exercise program. This program consists of a
set of physical and muscle relaxing exercises
done during so-called “active breaks”. The
purpose of these exercises is to prevent
disease and revitalize employees so that they
can continue their workday with a better frame
of mind and more energy.
This program is being carried out in some areas
of the head office in Peru and gradually it will be
implemented in the other offices, as well as at
the different projects under the organization's
responsibility. The company is confident that
this program, as well as the “visible leadership”
of every one of its employees, will contribute to
the achievement of the optimum results
expected of all of its employees.

NEW PROJECTS
Buenaventura
Mining service at the
Breapampa project
Following successful earthmoving for the
Breapampa project, the mining work should
begin in the very short term.
The first part of the work consists of clearing
and grubbing the pit area prior to drilling and
blasting. The hauling work will be carried out
according to the plans received from the client,
who will delimit the mineralized areas and those
that contain no recoverable mineral.
Six-meter-high banks will be drilled and blasted
according to the grid designed, which will be
adjusted in the field in coordination with
Buenaventura so that the resulting material will
be of the particle size required for mineral
recuperation on the leach pad. In order to form
slopes and maintain the stability required, these
will be executed by means of the controlled
drilling and blasting technique to minimize
shock waves and fragment projection.
According to the schedule received from the
client, plans are to move 2,170,416 m3 of gold
and 1,244,490 of waste material from February
2012 to March 2014.

Construction and improvement
of the Cusco-Quillabamba highway,
Alfamayo-Quillabamba section
The heavy rains that have affected Cusco since
November have caused the suspension of road
construction and improvement work until
weather conditions improve. The precipitation
in the area is intense, especially in the
Alfamayo sector in the district of Huayopata,
province of La Convencion.
Landslides have caused the collapse of
bridges and blockage of highways, leaving
some populations isolated at times. There are
critical sectors where the highway shows
evidence of significant landslides that reduce
the width of the road and require a technical
solution with slabs and rigid pavement.
Similarly, due to the instability of the land, there
are sections with total loss of the road service
that requires a technical solution not
considered in the technical file for the project.

As a preventive measure, access roads have
been conditioned for light vehicles and
medium-capacity buses while work is being
done to repair the bridges and roads that
collapsed due to the intense precipitation,
which continues at this time.
The purpose of the project is to execute the
construction and improvement of the existing
road, in order to solve the problems related to
land transportation between the city of Cusco
and Quillabamba, particularly between the
towns of Alfamayo and Quillabamba. Currently,
due to the rough terrain in the area of the
project, suburban areas are connected by a
winding road.
The works planned are the construction of ten
bridges of varying lengths, culverts, triangular
and rectangular ditches, metal and March-type
conduits, subdrains, and tipped, gabioned and
riprapped curbs. Total hot mix asphalt paving of
the 6-meter wide road with shoulders is also
planned.
During the month of November, the need to
suspend the paving work that has been
detrimental to productivity and the cost of the
project was evaluated. The laying of the subbase, base and priming required executing the
work again, and paving with an asphalt mix
meant many unproductive hours due to waiting
for the rain to stop. From December to March,
work continued on special structures and
bridges due to the low impact of rain on them
(90% reliability in the execution) and the
contribution their execution would make to the
resumption of work on grading and paving
during the “dry months”, starting in April.

Implementation of SAP at
Mota-Engil Peru
Taking into account the growth achieved by
Mota-Engil Perú in the engineering and
construction market, the decision was made to
accompany this development with tools to
automate the company's processes by
implementing the SAP solution. This tool is
highly useful for making decisions that entail a
reduction in total operating costs and
duplication of processes. With the inherent
demands of a scenario of opportunities for
improvement and consolidation, Mota-Engil
Perú's SAP strategy is to support its clients by
providing optimum information management
and quick, efficient responses to their
problems.
“We required decision making with constant
regard for the rules of business and functional
definitions projected in reports with information
of high quality provided by an integrated
information system with access and updating in
real time,” explains the general coordinator for
SAP, Jaime Febres.
For the purpose of achieving greater efficiency,
as well as savings in terms of time and money,
in the operations and processes, opportunities
for improvement necessary for accompanying
the company's growth were identified and
prioritized. For this purpose, the board of
directors and the area managers from the
different business units became involved in
order to define the strategy to follow and jointly
design a plan of action to execute in 2012.
Simultaneously, an ambitious project to
implement SAP R/3 in the functional
management areas of materials, accounting
and finance, equipment management and
maintenance, fixed assets and human
resources management was carried out.
Thanks to the high degree of commitment
demonstrated by all of the participants in the
project, the consulting team, the company's
employees, and the SAP support area, the
solution was implemented successfully within
the established timeframe. “Ordinarily, when
solutions of this type are implemented, it takes
three to four months to stabilize the system and
provide user support.” In addition, in the phase
following implementation, support is available
from Mota-Engil Serviços Partilhados
Administrativos e de Gestão from Portugal.
For example, previously, all human resources
information was handled in an internal system
that was not integrated with the finance area in
order to manage payroll information. Different
systems were used in a single process, so the
unification of data was essential in order to
avoid duplication of information or input errors.
In the first phase, the project included
functionalities such as master data on
employees, organizational unit and functional
payroll area.
Currently, recruitment and selection,
competence and objective evaluation, training
and self-service portal applications are in the
implementation phase. In order to maximize the
use of the SAP platform, information is being
standardized and transferred to the electronic
format using the same format and data that was
kept in physical files. Tools of this type make it
possible to share the requirements related to
the management of each area on-line. In
addition, managers can see their employees'
administrative status (training, salaries,
bonuses, vacation, etc.), as well as evaluate
competences and objectives from their
computers with just a click.
Training
The different phases are carried out with the
participation of ROFF Portugal, the SAP
consulting partner in charge of implementation.
As it was considered important to seek
specialization in the processes, the human
resources module began official SAP training
with international certification. It began with the
introductory level in order for the members of
the team to know the system and its scope in
detail. The second phase consists of explaining
the functionality of the applications already
implemented, as well as those currently in the
process of execution.
Results
There is a single database, all of the human
resources and payroll processes are integrated,
and the redesign of processes will make a
reduction in response time possible. Having the
selection, recruiting, personnel administration
and payroll integrated, payment errors are
avoided and updating information on the
personnel is simplified. One of the major
benefits of SAP is that the employees
themselves can update their information and
have access on-line to all of the information they
need.
Aware of the impact and dimension of the implementation of these applications, we obtained the direct collaboration of our head office in
Portugal, with regard to its experience and good practices worldwide. Today the company has a tool that enables it to have greater
possibilities of reaching a higher level in its relationship with its employees.

Restoration of the bay of Luanda
This project, which was granted in concession
to the Mota-Engil and Soares da Costa
consortium, includes expansion of Marginal
Avenue for 6 lanes and 8 lanes in intersection
areas, infrastructure management, and
maintenance of the highway network to install a
central separator equipped with a modern
traffic signal system.
More than 338,000 m2 of plant and viaducts will
be built. The project also includes the
construction of the Vianda Bridge (to link
Marginal and the island of Luanda), parking
facilities, 127,000 m2 of green areas, a new
sewer system and public lighting.
It should be noted that in November of last year,
Portuguese Prime Minister Pedro Passos
Coelho and the president of Mota-Engil,
Antonio Mota, were invited by the President of
the Republic of Angola to visit the restoration
works at Luanda Bay.
As this is the most emblematic work in progress
in the country, it represents an opportunity to
demonstrate the consortium's execution
capacity. During the visit, progress on the works
was explained, as well as the impact of urban
renovation planned for this part of the city,
particularly in terms of the effectiveness of the
road network, the environment and real estate.
Location: Angola
Client: Sociedad Bahía de Luanda
Value of the contract: 95 818 936.00€
