Written by Nick Choo
and directed by Sabrina
Hassan, The Edge is a
musical of Josh, a man
pushed to despair and
is at the edge of his life.
Suddenly, mother, brother,
girlfriend and three close
friends are forced to reexamine their individual
histories with Josh. When
these six people are confronted by impending
death, who takes the blame? In the process, they
learn things both startling and redeeming about
themselves and one another – about family and
friends, love and betrayal.
The story and music is moving, touching, and
opens up a window into our lives as we see how our
own relationships determine what drastic paths we
decide to take.

songbirds return!!!
Produced by
Asia Musical
Productions, one of
the biggest musical
theatre producers in Malaysia, Singing Market The
Musical is a delightful musical set in the eccentric
1970’s. The musical is an explosion of nostalgia
with its unforgettable classic melodies, endearing
characters, entertaining story, retro designs and
splendid colours.
The story centers around a group of vendors in a
“pasar” or market who are forced to perform at the
annual Ghost Festival dinner at the eleventh hour.
With only 2 weeks to go, can these “impostors” pull
it off?

"Who is it going to be tonight?"
Two hit men are forced to wait indefinitely while
waiting for orders from their boss. Their true colours
are inevitably revealed as they are forced to deal with
boredom and each other as sinister events unfold
from underneath the fragility of their mundane
routine. Kakiseni Directing Apprentice Ariff Kamil
directs an adaptation of Harold Pinter's dark comedy
as an exercise in voyeuristic, site-specific theatre.

The Actors
Studio Chorus.
A few months ago Faridah and Joe
asked me if it was possible to establish
a choral group based at penangpac.
It was an opportune moment for, after
three years as Chorus Master of the
Penang Philharmonic Chorus, I had
recently resigned from the position and
was looking for something new. However,
I was still committed to preparing the
Philharmonic Chorus for a concert at
the Dewan Sri Pinang on 28 July – a
concert involving international soloists,
the Penang Philharmonic Chorus and
Orchestra, all conducted by Datuk Ooi
Chean See.
On 29 July I began to sound out singers
in Penang and was encouraged by their
response. The first rehearsal for the
Actors Studio Chorus was set down for
Monday 26 August and on that day I was
pleasantly surprised to find 55 singers
eager to start work. Another 20 singers
had said they were keen to join but that
they could not make the first rehearsal.
The rehearsal was held on the performing
area in Stage 1 and we were pleased with
the acoustic and, of course, the effective
air conditioning. The second rehearsal
was held on Monday 2 September in
Studio 1 and 53 singers attended.
We are currently preparing for a
Christmas Concert to be presented in
Stage 1 on Monday 23 and Tuesfday
24 December. The programme will
include Christmas Carols for chorus and
orchestra and will include a number of
well known Christmas Carols in which
the audience will be invited to take part.
The programme will include a major
work by Vaughan Williams – his Fantasia
on Christmas Carols for solo Baritone,
Chorus and Orchetsra. And Santa
has agreed to do his best to make an
appearance on both evenings.
The orchestra will consist of around 30
members of Musica Sinfonietta.

Terri Thespian's Performing Arts Advice Column
with Paul 'P' Playwright & 'Ed' the Editor
Helloskis everybodies! It’s really quiet without Ed in the office. Paul has been putting on a tie and a pointy-haired wig to
try and liven the mood, bless his writerly heart. But it’s just not the same without your boss to yell at you... and the coffee
machine... and the poor new sales rep who just got hired last week… Alas.
As we wind down towards the end of the year, the mood inevitably turns to the reflective. Our first letter is!
Dear Terri,

What do you think?
- Concerned about the state of things.
Is theatre financially sustainable? I
can only answer from the Malaysian
perspective (obvs) and the answer is, not
right now.
But what are we going to do, give up?
Sponsorship and donation is not a terrible
way to do things. Patronage has been
around for as long as there’ve been artists;
Leondaro da Vinci stayed in paint from
the rich and noble paying him to make art
for them.
However, ingrained inside the question
is a simpler notion; that of commerce vs
artistry. For a while now what the public
will pay heroic quantities of money to see
(White House Down, Pontianak: Anak
Pontianak: 4) and what artists want to
make have been somewhat at odds.

-terri =D
The stereotypical view of the business
person is of a soulless pencil counter,
who will bankroll the sure thing but
veto the experimental. Artists argue
then that without the experimental
we will surely stagnate. The business
person counterargues that why don’t you
experiment within the safe endeavours.
The artist… etc.
We can do both. Steven Spielberg made
Jurassic Park so he could have the money
to make Schindler’s List, arguably his
masterpiece.
So while we begin on patronage, the
goal is to transition to something that
will help generate itself. Eventually the
model will work, but until we get there,
bring on the giant dinosaur plays!

[terri, pleae read- P]
...well there goes that plan.
Terri, why do Malaysians prefer TV? Is it because it’s
easier, cheaper, and the variety is better?
- 2 curious people
LA DI LA LA LA La -
Hi curious people,
It’s also more a la carte (I’ll just watch this for
half an hour and then go to bed), and over time
TV programming has evolved to favor shows
that will make you want to tune in (NEXT
WEEK, ON LOST. TYRA BANKS GUEST
STARS AS THE ISLAND’S LAST TOP
MODEL). Advertising revenue is a powerful
thing.
However that does not mean that TV is is
a bad medium. Absolutely not. It’s a new
medium (60 years, compared to how long film
and theatre have been around) and right now
we have it pretty good.
Think about the big series, like Game of
Thrones. Right now it’s on season 3 so it’s had
about 30 hours to tell it’s story.
30 hours. Try getting anyone to sit through a
movie that long. Or a play.
Theatre has live energy, the capacity to be locally
relevant (no movies about your local MP) and is
much, much cheaper than TV programming.
To go back to the question, Malaysia also has
more of a TV watching culture. We come home,
we flip it on. Watching a play isn’t the same level
of social as jom gi movie. I’m not trying to say that
one is better than the other (they’re not) it’s just
that theatre hasn’t got its hooks into people yet.
Yet.
Alright, that’s it, sign off! Paul and I are going to
go plan Ed’s surprise return party. Does anyone
know where we can get 10m3 of cashew nuts? Let
us know!

By the time you read this the
SHORT+SWEET FESTIVAL 2013
would have ended with a very, very
resounding bang of SUCCESS!!
12
Faridah Merican is the Executive
Producer and Co-Founder of The
Actors Studio Malaysia, The Kuala
Lumpur Performing Arts Centre and the
Performing Arts Centre of Penang.
It has been an awesome 8 weeks
comprising DANCE+THEATRE@
penangpac, followed with STAND-UP COM
EDY+SONG+MUSICAL+DANCE+THEAT
RE@klpac. What an exciting FESTIVAL this
was while we played host to a total of 500
young and not-so-young Malaysians+non
Malaysians, all sharing a level playing
field, both on and off stage and totally
loving it. If you have never attended the
SHORT+SWEET festival before, you must
give it a try. S+S have developed loyal
audiences who will never give it a miss. The
enjoyment, the charm, the happy and notso-happy faces, the friendly competition,
and I must not forget - the learning - that
one goes through is immeasurable.
SHORT+SWEET is not just THE BIGGEST
LITTLE FESTIVAL IN THE WORLD, it is
a TOTAL EXPERIENCE, because it's a
year long process of workshops, call for
entries, assessing the entries, interviewing
Choreographers and Directors, auditioning
Actors and Dancers, Technical meetings,
Bump-ins, Dress rehearsals and finally
it's show-time. I was just telling someone
midway through the process there
were no tears yet! Maybe we'll break
the record this year - no tears at all!
But, but, but, SHORT+SWEET simply
CANNOT be done without the support we
receive from our dedicated technical, stage
management, marketing and publicity
teams. Like the performers, it's a mixed
bag of oldies and newbies, but mainly new
kids on the block who have to endure the
firm guiding hands of Gan, Boy, Joe and I.
SHORT+SWEET owe our success to our
supporters BIG TIME who give us cash and
products as prizes as well as the media.
Top of the list is an annonymous donour
who has been there for us for the last 4
years, then there's Yamaha, Cave & Cellar,
Nestle, Carlsberg, Kakiseni, Dancesteps
and Baby Dancesteps, Game-On, Esquire
and TimeOut, Palate Palette, Samira, Inspire
and Impress, Vistana and Cititel, Autralian
High Commission and British Council, Afo
Radio, Asia Media, Bernama Radio, Bfm,
NTV 7, The Edge, Emmagem, Expatriate
Lifestyle, Penang Monthly and the list goes
on...! THANK YOU EVERYONE for our 6th
year in KL and 2nd year in Penang and
definitely looking forward to the next!!
Thank you for supporting
Malaysian Theatre!
