Fall 2013 - Michigan Land Use Institute
environment. economy. community. FALL 2013 From Executive Director Hans Voss Building Resilience The Michigan Land Use Institute can seem like a complex organization: We engage in local, state, and national issues; and we research, educate, and organize. But our work can really be distilled into three basic human needs: food, energy, and transportation. The outcomes we produce in these core areas benefit everyone. They support the local economy, promote social justice and public health, and protect the environment. I know that’s a big statement, but let me give you a few examples. smart commute! Biking or carpooling to work three times a week could save you nearly $1,700 annually. eat local! If northwest Michigan households spent just $10 a week on local farm foods, our regional economy would gain nearly $5 million in new revenue each year. If you buy and eat a locally grown beet, it’s not just good for your health and the local economy. It also keeps our agricultural landscape productive, and environmentally, it makes a lot more sense than buying a beet that has been trucked across the country. Or consider what happens when you weatherize your home to save energy. It cuts down on energy bills, and utilities don’t have to produce as much power, which is good for the environment. Also, because so many of our energy dollars leave our community, the money that is saved is redirected into the local economy. And did you know that the average annual cost of owning and operating a car in Michigan is $9,000, and 86% of that immediately leaves the region? Our work to make it easier to choose biking, walking, and transit makes it possible for families to live with one less car, with tangible economic, health, and environmental benefits. Taken together, our efforts to localize the food system, conserve energy, and expand transportation choices are central pillars of community resilience. Our friend Bob Russell, a great leader who passed away recently, described resilience as “a community’s ability to adapt to unpredictable change.” This fall, we’re celebrating both the simplicity and the power of our work, and how the pieces come together to support community resilience. And we’re launching a really fun resilience reading project. Check out the details inside. save energy! A regional energy efficiency plan could save the region more than $200 million over 30 years and employ about 76 people annually. There’s one more type of resilience that I really appreciate: organizational resilience. Just as a community needs to build the local assets to create durability for the long haul, MLUI needs to build its strength and organizational health to keep momentum strong and achieve specific goals. And that kind of resilience comes from committed people who stay involved, contribute financially, and participate in advancing our shared mission. People like you. Thanks for doing your part. become an mlui member! mlui.org/member Michigan Land Use Institute 148 East Front Street, Suite 301 Traverse City, MI 49684 Nonprofit Organization US Postage PAID Traverse City, MI Permit #514 clean Energy The Power of Energy Efficiency Buildings consume 40 percent of the nation’s energy, and most of them are terribly inefficient— consuming two to three times more energy than similar buildings in comparable European climates. MLUI’s latest report, “The Power of Energy Efficiency,” argues that there’s plenty to be done in northern Michigan. The report introduces the people already making the region “efficiency ready”: homeowners, business people, contractors, officials, and experts with firsthand knowledge of just how well energy efficiency works and the impact it can have on the economy. It follows up on a 2012 MLUI study, coauthored with the nonprofit SEEDS, that found cutting energy use by 25 percent for all residential and half of all commercial and public buildings in Grand Traverse County would provide 76 jobs each year and save an additional $200 million in energy costs over 30 years. Read the new report online at mlui.org/efficiency. food & farming ‘10 Cents a Meal’ Under Way A regional initiative to provide schools with extra funding to buy more locally grown fruits and vegetables is now a reality thanks to strong support from local businesses. The program, 10 Cents a Meal for School Kids & Farms, started this fall at Glen Lake Community Schools and the elementary schools of Traverse City Area Public Schools and Suttons Bay Public Schools. The 10 Cent Fund will provide nearly $29,000 for healthy, locally grown produce served to school children in the three districts for one school year—three times a week in fall, once a week in winter, and twice a week in spring. The districts are matching this 10-cent reimbursement with their own 10 cents from existing school lunch dollars, for a total of nearly $58,000 of produce for students and for the local food economy. Thriving Communities Local Motion: Just the Facts Did you know that the average Grand Traverse area family spends about $15,000 a year on transportation alone? That family could save $9,000 each year just by eliminating one of two cars. That’s just one of the interesting facts our Local Motion program is highlighting to raise awareness about the true cost of our transportation habits— on our time, our health, and our pocketbooks. The goal: To improve transportation choices in northern Michigan and make it easier to carpool, bike, bus or walk to work. The new Local Motion fact sheets are available at mlui.org/facts. WHAT’S NEW AT MLUI TC’s Newest Bus Rider Taste the Local Difference TCSaves returns Over the past year and a half, the TCSaves program has helped more than 550 homeowners make their houses more comfortable, cut down on their energy costs, and support local contractors. This fall, homeowners in Traverse City once again have a chance to participate through a renewed partnership among MLUI, Traverse City Light & Power, and SEEDS. For more information, visit TCSaves.com. It’s been a big year for the Taste the Local Difference program, with a new logo, and new maps and smartphone apps to make finding local food easier for consumers. Now the program is launching its first marketing push. New TLD shelf-talkers are designed to help shoppers find local foods at local stores. They’re already showing up at Tom’s grocery stores, and soon, other retailers will feature the new TLD logo. The focus of the TLD newsletter has also changed, and it’s now featuring short articles on our local food partners, and where you can buy the freshest and best local foods in northwest Michigan. If you don’t already receive it in your inbox, visit mlui.org/tldsignup to subscribe. BOB RUSSELL RESILIENCE READING PROJECT idea is a simple one: In each season of the year, a broad community will come together to read one of the books Bob emphatically recommended from his carefully curated resilience reading list. Resilience is not about our ability to bounce Our First Selection back; it’s about our ability to adapt to In our first selection, unpredictable change.” -Bob Russell Bob Russell’s passing left a huge void in northern Michigan; he was a special man. Bob had many talents indeed, but it was his passion for learning— his discipline to study and his unyielding drive to gather information—that, as much as anything, defined his effectiveness as a leader. In the spirit of spreading knowledge and the love of learning, MLUI—in partnership with the Neahtawanta Research and Education Center and many other groups and businesses—is launching the Bob Russell Resilience Reading Project. The “Cooked,” author Michael Pollan argues that our own health and the health of our food system depend on one rule: Cook your own food. The book taps into northern Michigan’s incredible agricultural heritage, our love of great dishes, and our booming local food economy. Pick up your copy at Horizon Books or your local library, and follow along with fellow readers at mlui.org/resilience. Then join us in February for the inaugural book club meeting at Horizon. Stay tuned for details. Congratulations to MLUI’s transportation policy specialist, James Bruckbauer, and his wife Danielle on the birth of their son, George Edson. If he’s anything like his dad, expect to see him on the bus—or on two wheels darting around town—very soon. Welcome, Meghan and Katie MLUI is excited to introduce the two new FoodCorps service members who will be working from our office to promote and encourage local food and healthy eating at area schools. Meghan McDermott is helping schools feature more locally grown foods in the cafeteria and in the classroom, and Katie Zbrozek is leading school garden efforts and assisting in nutrition education. Calendar of Events • Farmland 5K - Saturday, Dec. 7 - Noon Sign up for this 5K run or the new bike race on a pristine centennial farm in northern Michigan. $2 from every registration benefits Taste the Local Difference. 500 spots are going fast! • First Annual MI Beer Run - Saturday, Dec. 14 Take one-part 5K race, mix it with three-parts bar crawl, and you are starting to understand the Beer Run. The party starts at 4:30 p.m. with appetizers and a cash bar. And stick around for Billy and Don; the tunes start at 8 p.m.! For registration details, and other upcoming events, visit mlui.org. HURRY! YOUR DONATION CAN BE MATCHED... MLUI Board members have planted a seed and set up a challenge for you. They have created a $75,000 pool that stands available to match every dollar you can give over and above last year’s giving—but only if we reach that $75K goal by the end of the year. That means if you are a new member, your entire gift will be doubled! If you are already a member, the amount you increase will be matched (don’t worry, we will do the math for you!). We are more than two-thirds of the way to achieving this ambitious challenge. We’re certain that, with your help and continued patronage, we can get there. So, visit mlui.org/donate or fill out the card on the next page to help us reach the goal. summer 2013 ck B o a rd o ff • r il Ap ‘13 $38,000 october 2013 $55,444 tch ki ma THANK YOU, MLUI DONORS!
