Boards will explore why it is important to review indicators of student success regularly to measure progress toward school goals, build an effective partnership between the school leader and board, and collaborate with the school leader each year to establish his/her annual goals. >>Kate Essex is the Chief Program Officer at Charter Board Partners. 1.2 Parent Power - Advocacy Workshop, Part 1 CAROLINA A Parents and educational choice advocates will come together for a day of training around grassroots advocacy. Is “just right” text getting all of your students to grade level and beyond? Time is too fleeting and too precious to rely on a collective hunch about best practices in reading instruction! Learn how K-2 teachers can use multiple text experiences during the “learning to read” years and boost reading trajectories and share responsibility for ensuring all students can read grade level text accurately, fluently, and with understanding. In this session we will address what school leaders need to know to help K-2 teachers share the responsibility for ensuring that ALL students entering grade three can read with accuracy, fluency, and understanding. Special emphasis will be on use of multiple text experiences including digital media to boost each student’s reading trajectory. >> Stacey Leitzel is the Professional Development Manager with Superkids by Zaner-Bloser. 1.4 What Everyone Ought to Know About the New South Carolina Mathematics Standards, Part 1 CAROLINA D Participants will gain an understanding of the expectations of the new South Carolina College-and-Career-Ready Standards for Mathematics and explore resources and support documents aligned to the expectations of those standards. Educators, administrators, and parents must take this form of social cruelty serious and understand its implications toward furthering threats of violence. This program will clearly define what bullying is and how cyber-bullying and cyber-harassment are similar and in other ways very different from “traditional” schoolyard bullying. The various ways cyber-bullying occurs will be defined, and the impact on individuals, the school community, and society will be examined. 1.7 The Importance of Well-Trained Teachers CAROLINA G/H There is consistent evidence showing that teachers are the most important school-based factor in determining learning outcomes, second only to what children bring to school with them. Yet there remains a marked deficit in both teacher numbers and teacher training worldwide, which has an extreme impact on learning outcomes for children. Recognizing that teacher effectiveness is the most important school-related factor in a student’s academic success, the goal for administrators is to ensure their educators have all the resources and opportunities they need to be at their best in the classroom. GROWING ENROLLMENT? We can help. >> Kelly Haydt is an Account Executive with HMH. 1.8 Financing for Charter Schools DIPLOMAT SC Community Loan Fund staff will discuss its loan products available to charter schools for facilities development and planning and implementation for new school development. Learn practical ways to avoid problems from the start. For charter schools that contract for educational services with an EMO, that contract can be critical. Sponsors are integrating more substantive requirements relating to EMO provisions into the charter with a strong basis in SC law to do so. These requirements can be a strength in the negotiation of an EMO contract, and administration of a multi-year contract. The SCPCSD is taking a proactive approach by using the charter school contract to require charter schools to meet certain guidelines if an EMO contract is used. SESSION DESCRIPTIONS 1.3 All K-2 Students to Grade Level and Beyond: A Shared Responsibility CAROLINA B/C BREAKOUT SESSION I >> Jay Matthews is a lawyer with Haynsworth Sinkler Boyd and has represented charter schools in negotiations and disputes with their EMO’s. Modular Buildings | Education Schools worldwide continue to increase their use of modular buildings on their campuses because modular provides benefits that no other building solution can offer. Relocatable buildings supply quick space that can be removed as quickly as it was installed when a project is completed or space just is no longer needed. Permanent modular construction provides high quality long-term space with less expense and installed in a shorter timeframe than conventional construction. SECURE. DURABLE. FLEXIBLE. www.vanguardmodular.com ● 877 -438-8627 37 www.SCCharterSchools.org (800) 691-7133 The fluctuating economy often forces changes in demographic factors requiring school systems to make space adjustments quickly when space is needed. Modular construction is a nimble method for educational institutions to secure the space they need. Whether it’s helping companies grow and prosper or helping a community do the same, we are committed to making a powerful, positive impact.
