Created by: Drew Greenwood The Commerce girls and boys soccer team participated in the Oologah Showcase on March 13 and March 14. On Thursday, the girls played against Rejoice at 10 o’clock in the morning. The girls played a tough game and fought until the very end, keeping Rejoice from scoring. The game then went to penalty kicks. For Commerce, Coach Medlin chose Felicia Hallett, Kaitlyn Myers, Julianna Summers, Brilea Rush, and Genesis Alvarado to kick the PK’s . Brilea scored her first goal and the first point for Commerce. The other girls barely missed their kicks, while Rejoice scored three on our goalie, Katie Long. The boys also played a good game but lost by one to Coweta. The next day, the girls had to play at 10 o’clock against Skiatook. They unfortunately lost and went on to play Bristow at 1 o’clock that afternoon. Kaitlyn Myers scored the first goal of this game from a corner kick. The girls held on to the lead throughout the entire game, to record the Commerce Lady Tigers first soccer win! The boys lost their first game as well. They played after the girls game, and also won their first game for the 2014 season! St. Patrick was a slave. He was captured at the age of 14 and taken to Ireland, where he was enslaved for six years herding sheep before escaping and returning to his family. 4. He never drove serpents out of Ireland, because evidence suggests there were no serpents to be driven out. 5. St. Patrick's Day was first celebrated in the United States. Boston was the scene of the first Paddy's knees-up in 1737. 6. It wasn't until the 19th century that green became the color of St. Patrick. Before then it was blue, the color of his vestments. Green was picked to commemorate St. Patrick's use of the shamrock. 7. There are nine cities, towns and boroughs in the United States called Dublin – they are in California, Georgia, Indiana, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, and Virginia. 8. In Ireland St. Patrick's Day was an alcohol-free holiday until 1970. Before then it was considered a day of religious observance, meaning pubs had to be closed for business. In 1970 it was reclassified a national holiday. 9. St. Patrick's Day is celebrated on March 17 because that is the day he was thought to have died in 461 AD. 10. In 2013 Census data revealed that the numbers of people in the US who identify as Irish-American are seven-times more than the amount of Irish people in Ireland itself. Submitted by Kendra Betts from Google 2014 Cheer Tryouts Cheer tryouts were held on Wednesday, March 26 this year. In order by grade, here is the list of people who are on the squad. 9th grade: Shia Rutledge, Halle North, and Hailey Baine. 10th grade: Reghan Trease and Gracie Bundy 11th grade: Felicia Hallett, Britney Bachman, and Brilea Rush 12th grade: Maci Hayes, Morgan Hayes, Jacee Morgan, Jaycee Bauer, Hannah Hailey and Xiomara Prado Mascot: Rachel Hartsock By Rachel Hartsock Commerce Baseball The Commerce baseball team has a 7-8 record. We have played some good teams and got 6th in the conference tournament. Coach Schaper says, “The team has a lot of adversity, because there are 4 or 5 seniors that are good leaders, in addition to the younger guys coming in who are still trying to learn how it all works. That makes it harder for them to come together, but they can do it.” By: Devon Mathis & DC Band & Choir Coronation 8th Grade: Freshmen: Jessica Bruce– escorted by Tony Stewart Tori Schnakenberg- escorted by Gunnar Hatfield Alisha Hogan– escorted by Michael Blile Kiara Rhodes– escorted by Trace “The Freezer” Craghead Sophomores: Juniors: Samantha Smith– escorted by Justin Jarnagin Chelsea Landrum– escorted by Aaron Jarvis Allison Gann– escorted by Nate Jarvis Nani Castro– escorted by Javier Pena Senior Queen Candidates: Majestyc Harrold– escorted by Gabe Diaz Megan Rooney– escorted by Nolan Schaper And the 2014 Band & Choir Coronation Queen– Christina Spriggs– escorted by Kyle Spriggs Trace Craghead Lacy East KeiShawn Plumb Faith Cook Jake Hailey Kolton Horne Makayla Williamson Larissa Reyes Diego Ybarra Kendra Betts Davan Brown Lindsey Chance Mireya Castilleja Xena Canales April 1st April 2nd April 3rd April 6th April 9th April 15th April 17th April 17th April 20th April 24th April 25th April 26th April 27th April 27th By: Hannah Barker
