Charity Auction Guide - Discworld Convention
Charity Auction Guide Introduction. The Charity Auction has always featured prominently in the history of Discworld Conventions raising huge amounts of money for worthwhile causes and this year, we hope, will continue the tradition. We’ve decided to have a bit of a spring clean and re-think of the auction process this year and rather than having hundreds of lots we’ve restricted it to just over 60 lots. We have carefully pre-selected and arranged for a varied selection of desirable items for a wide range of pockets. We hope that we have put some fun into the serious business of raising money. We have items ranging including original artwork for the Clacks board game, an extremely rare Joe Pattison Clarecraft style figure (even rarer than Cheery!) and pocket money items such as post cards and key rings with everything in-between including book proofs and even the Patrician’s Pants. The 2016 Charity auction will be raising funds for both The Orangutan Foundation for their excellent conservation work and Music Therapy Works which aims to provide therapy to people of all ages who struggle with verbal communication. The right honourable Dr Pat Harkin will once again guide you through the bidding process1. We have also arranged for your viewing pleasure two of the world famous auctionettes. You may also recognise many of auction team members from Wincanton and Wadfest auctions. We hope to keep the auction fun and relatively short compared to previous years. Please do not try to pay for items until the auction has completed – this causes distractions and slows down the process for everyone else. At the end of the auction please form an orderly queue and we will deal with each of you (one at a time) as soon and as quickly as possible. Members of the finance committee will be on hand to collect your money and the auction team will ensure you receive the correct items. Please remember to being the following items to the auction. 1. Your bidding paddle with you from your welcome pack as we are unable to take bids from people without paddles. 2. Your cash, cheque or card – you must be able to pay for your items in the 90 minute period after the auction completes. If you do not collect and pay for your items within this period you will forfeit the items and they will be re-listed at a later Discworld auction. 3. Your rubber duck2 We run a “keep your paddle in the air system” while Pat shouts out increasing monetary values at you. When the amount shouted is above your limit please lower your paddle. When only one paddle is left standing that person wins the item - please keep your paddle raised until we have recorded your number. 1 2 Please remember to quack at appropriate times Duck not essential. Discworld Convention Auction Guide 2016 – Page 2 of 13 In case of lots that contain several identical items we will use the tried and tested “keep going until only ‘x’ paddles are left up”. This causes us hours of mirth and enjoyment 3 so we try to keep these types of lots to a minimum. Please remember that the charity auction should be fun. Please only spend what you can afford to spare. We’ve taken every reasonable precaution to ensure that the catalogue descriptions of items are correct. However bidders must satisfy themselves as to the authenticity and condition of any items. Viewing is arranged just prior to the auction. The Convention does not guarantee any item or its provenance. The auction team reserve the right to add, remove, substitute, re-order or re-catalogue items without prior notice. The Discworld Auction team would like extend a huge thank you to everyone that donated so generously to the auction. We also want to thank each and everyone of you that takes part in the auction it would be pretty quiet if none of you turned up! The Discworld Convention Auction Team 2016 dwauction@dwcon.org Discworld® is a registered trademark of Terry Pratchett and is used with permission. 3 This may not be 100% true. Inevitably what happens is we have three items and four paddles raised. Pat will increase the amount and two paddles will go down and then we will have to do some mental recalculation as Pat reverses the amount so that hopefully one of the paddles will go back up again… It’s all rather complicated but normally works out right in the end.
