From the Director by Nick James
As we enter the last quarter of 2013, we look back on a whirlwind
year behind us. The election of a new Board of Directors, the first
annual Diane Whiteley Stakes Race, our fresh new website
(www.tgagreyhounds.com) and social media presence, with more
to come in the final few months of the year, most notably the Valley
Race Park meet.
Valley Race Park (VRP) will run its one day meet on Saturday,
November 30, 2013. The meet will feature 10 races with a purse of $
10,000 each race. In addition to the normal payout of places 1-4
places, 5-8 will receive $250 each, so all places will be paid.
The RMSC is working with Valley to help insure a consistent and safe
racing surface. The officials at VRP have been extremely open to
working with the RMSC on these issues. Gulf Greyhound Park (GGP)
has been working with VRP and the TGA to ensure the greyhounds
that are there to race will be able to participate. Many thanks to
everyone at VRP & GGP, along with the TGA Board of Directors, in
helping to make this a successful meet. (continued on next page) PO Box 40

From the Director (con’t)
Sam Houston/Valley Race Park has asked
for the next meet to be held on November 28, 2015, a race day will not be held
in 2014, so all purse monies from 2014
will go from VRP into GGP’s purse account.
Also of interest to TGA members was the
Texas Racing Commission voted to send
100% of cross-species monies generated
at the horse tracks to Gulf Greyhound
Park for its purse account in 2014.
We hope you will follow the Texas
Greyhound Association on Facebook and
Twitter. On Facebook, you will need to
click “Like”, as a business account cannot
have “Friends”. Please advise all your
friends of this so that we can keep open
communications with all our followers.
*If you have interesting photos of greyhounds of any ages, on the farm, racing,
playing, sleeping, interacting with other
animals or people or a greyhound that you
simply want to show off, we would love to
use them for our Facebook page and website, it keeps the content fresh and engaging.
We hope to see photos of you showing
off your greyhounds in kind of setting.
For Facebook, please send your photos
to Toni Luttrell, toniluttrell@austin.rr.com.
For the website, send to Lois Mowery,
loismowery@tgagreyhounds.com
*Please send high resolution and
in .jpg format.
Lois and Kayla continue to work on the
website to make it even better and more
informative and user friendly. The website will have forms for new members to
join, along with a section on “How to Get
Started in Racing”. Please pass this along
to anyone who’d like to join the TGA.
The last of November, the existing member renewal form will be available for
download from the website. We are
now setup to take all major credit
cards, making it easier for those who’d
rather pay their dues that way.
A promotional committee, chaired by Ed
Gardner, has been tasked by the Board of
Directors with promoting breeding and
racing in Texas. If anyone has suggestions or ideas, please contact Ed.
Two new kennels have located at Gulf
Greyhound Park.
TGA members
Louie Rivera and Jay Childs have both
established kennels there. Please
welcome them when you see or talk with
them.
As always, if you have questions, suggestions or concerns, please contact us.

President’s Report
Dear TGA Members:
We have done some very positive
things so far this year. The Diane
Whiteley Stake Race went very well
with good attendance and we had
some Texas Bred dogs brought in to
compete. Congratulations to the
TGA members and owners of
the Harlan Brothers Kennel for their
winner "Slatex Slaton" for his win,
Bone Man Kennel and trainer John
Mitcham, Jr. We look forward to next
June's race.
The TGA is now on Facebook and
Twitter so please visit and “Like”
us. Through these we hope to promote new ownership and racing.
The TGA has hired Toni Luttrell, for
promotion of racing in Texas and
look forward to this new venture. If
any members have any ideas for promotion please contact Ed Garner,
Chairman of the Promotional Committee.
Valley Race Park meet is coming on
well and Gulf kennels will be running
in a one card race card with $100,000
dollars in purse money being paid
out. If you have dogs running at Gulf
please be sure to talk to your kennel
owner so as not to miss this opportunity to race for this money.
The RMSC has been working very
well with Gulf on track safety with
a good reduction of injuries for July
and Aug. A special thanks to Paul
Watt and Nick James for their efforts
and
time
devoted
to
the
track. Thanks also to Sally Briggs and
Oscar Vasquez for their cooperation.
I would like to thank Nick James and
the
TGA
Staff
on
getting
these projects done.
The new website is up and Lois and
Kayla are working on updating it on
a weekly or bi-weekly basis.

NGA Auction tops $1.5 million
With some late sales finalized early this
week, the NGA Auction, which saw more
than $1.4 million in pup sales and another
$115,000 in brood and stud dog sales
(bringing the total to more than one-anda-half million), brought a dramatic close
to another successful NGA Fall Meet
(Oct.
14-19)
in
Abilene,
Ks.
Pups—197 in all—sold for $1,406,150, for an
average of $7,138. Forty-seven brood lots
(including one stud—Hi Noon Hero, for
$25,000) sold for $115,950. Auction total was
$1,522,100.
Once again, snow helped define this
meet—but to a much lesser degree than
it did last spring, when a total snow covering (except for the track) greeted meet attendees on Tuesday’s races in April.
This time, snow flurries were the backdrop to Friday’s racetrack finals—but a full
wintry covering showed itself early in the
afternoon when all the races had been
completed.
Top sale in the auction was the $42,000 paid
by a group led by Randy Finegan for Ken
Biehle’s KB’s Hot Idea (Mustang Zapper-Hot
Kisses). Hot Idea won his February/March
main stake in 29.63—easily the fastest time
of the entire meet and just a length off the
track record. Joining Finegan in the purchase
were Rich Armington, Marshall Gramm and
Joe Ametrano.
The ongoing theme of the week was
Women in Greyhound Racing, as a number of supporters provided funds to sponsor a stake by that name. An additional
$500 was raised for a special purse to the
female with the fastest time of the week
(claimed by David Peck’s CTW Leona
Brown (CTW Base Camp-CTW Broken Halo, who ran a 29.93 on Friday). Moreover,
another $2,500 was raised by the supporters as a contribution on behalf of the NGA
to
breast
cancer
research.
The “women” theme seemed to touch on
other aspects of the Fall Meet. Gina
Strong became the first woman paddock
judge at a National Meet. The Wednesday
night banquet was in honor of Karen Keelan; it was only the third time a woman
was the banquet honoree, and the first
time a woman track operator was so honored. Then on Friday, Julia Ward of Abilene became the first women to be elected as president of the NGA.
Thursday night’s ceremonies at the greyhound museum witnessed the induction
of Darby Henry, Bill Lee and Flying Penske
into the Hall Of Fame in front of a huge
crowd. In fact, crowds for all events were
large throughout the week. More than the
usual number of representatives from
racetracks journeyed to Abilene for the
Meet, in part to take in Karen Keelan’s
banquet and the Bill Lee induction. Friday
night’s live auction crowd was especially
(article from the NGA website)
large.

The BEST of the BEST from the past 50 Years Of All-American Greyhounds
by Barry Baldwin & Gary Guccione
The two of us were talking one day back in
May and came up with an idea. We thought
that wouldn’t it be fun with the Greyhound
Hall of Fame celebrating their 50th year this
year and with 50 years of All-American teams
to assemble a group of “experts” to vote on
whom they thought was the Best of the Best
from the past 50 Years of All- Americans.
We decided to select 50 individuals with a variety of expertise in the greyhound business.
The 50 individuals were divided into five categories and they could be either active in the
business or retired. These five categories with
ten members each were: (1) greyhound kennel
operators, (2) greyhound owners, (3) greyhound trainers, (4) racetrack officials and (5)
journalists and/or public relations.
Downing, with Jim Frey (left) and Pat Dalton (right)
A cover letter was sent out to each of the 50
individuals letting them know that we
would appreciate their participation. Along
with this cover letter was a selection sheet
that listed point values for their selections
1st to 16th as follows: 1st – 50 points, 2nd –
42 points, 3rd – 36 points, 4th – 30 points,
5th – 24 points, 6th – 22 points, 7th – 20
points, 8th – 18 points, 9th – 16 points, 10th
– 14 points, 11th – 12 points, 12th – 10
points, 13th – 8 points, 14th – 6 points, 15th
– 4 points and 16th – 2 points.
Unfortunately, we had a typo in the cover
letter that asked the participants to pick
their top 20 greyhounds. Most of the ballots
were returned with 16 selections but some
did add four more because of the cover letter. Only the top 16 selections were used in
the balloting process.
After all of the ballots had been returned,
the votes were tallied to determine which
greyhounds would make the First, Second
and Third Team of the Best of the Best from
the past Fifty Years of All-Americans. We
want to thank everyone that participated
and we were very pleased that 90% of the
ballots were returned. Many of the 45 individuals that returned their selection sheets
either called with comments or attached
comments along with their ballot. Here is
just a sampling of what we received:

(con nued) Let me tell you how honored I am to have been
chosen to submit my BEST OF THE BEST. I made my
decisions based on just racing careers. As that is
how ALL AMERICANS are named. If it was based on
Stud careers or Brood Matron careers my list would
be different.
Dan Luciano (President/General Manager, American Greyhound Racing Arizona):
Too many great greyhounds left off!
Roy Berg (Greyhound journalist, Oregon):
Excellent idea! Good luck with getting responses.
Mike Pelletier (Texas Racing Commission State
Judge, Gulf Greyhound Park):
Thanks for including me on the selections...it was a
daunting task. I picked a mix of my era greyhounds
and some golden oldies who had an impact both
on the track and in the breeding field...hope I did
the process honor..
David Jeswald (Greyhound historian, Massachusetts):
Great idea, should be very interesting seeing final
results (Teams).
Dennis McKeon (former trainer; currently Greyhound journalist [“rockingship”]):
Thank you for including me on the roster of selectors. It’s a great honor.
A total of 109 different greyhounds received a least
one vote. Of these 109 greyhounds, only 10 received a first place vote worth 50 points. Only 3 of
these 109 greyhounds received over 1,000 votes.
The 3 receiving over 1,000 were: Downing (1,578),
Westy Whizzer (1,370) and Miss Whirl (1,014).
The BEST of the BEST of the All- Americans from the
past 50 Years- First Team Notes:
All eight members of the First Team of the BEST of
the BEST All-Americans from the past 50 Years have
been inducted into the Greyhound Hall of Fame.
In addition to being All- Americans, one was a Rural
Rube winner (Downing in 1977) and four were
Flashy Sir winners (P’s Rambling in 1987, K’s Flak in
1979, Unruly in 1981 and Dutch Bahama in 1985).
The top vote getter (Downing) also had one of his
sons make the First Team (Perceive).
Four of the first five greyhounds named are either
Westy Whizzer himself or his descendants
(Downing, Perceive and P’s Rambling the other
three).
Of the eight first team members, all eight came
from different kennels and different owners.
Three of the owners of the eight First Team members have been inducted into the Greyhound Hall
of Fame (Keith Dillon, 1983; Herb Koerner, 2001;
and R.H. Walters, 2005).
The BEST of the BEST of the All- Americans from the
past 50 Years- Second Team Notes: Five members
of the Second Team of the BEST of the BEST AllAmericans from the past 50 years (L.L.’s Doug, Talentedmrriply, Oshkosh Racey, Rooster Cogburn
and Rocking Ship*) have been inducted in the
Greyhound Hall of Fame.
In addition to being All- Americans, three were Rural Rube winners (Talentedmrripley in 2001, Oshkosh Racey in 1988 and EA’s Itzaboy in 2003) and
four were Flashy Sir winners (Talentedmrripley in
2002, Rocking Ship* in 1972 & 1973, Mo Kick in
1991 and Keefer in 1986).
Two members of the Second Team were sired by
members of the First Team: Oshkosh Racey by Unruly and Keefer by Perceive.
As was the case with the First Team, all of the Second Team members came from different kennels
and different owners.
There have been only six three time All-Americans:
three of those are on the First Team (Westy
Whizzer, Miss Whirl & Perceive) and three are on
the Second Team (L.L.’s Doug, Mo Kick & EA’s Itzaboy).
Rocking Ship* is the only imported greyhound to
gain a spot on any of the three teams comprising
the BEST of the BEST All-Americans from the past
50 years.
Keith Dillon was the first owner to have a greyhound named to both the First Team (Perceive)
and Second Team (Keefer).
Three of the kennels and/or owners of the eight
Second Team members have been inducted into

(con nued) The BEST of the BEST of the All- Americans from the past
50 Years- Third Team Notes:
Three members of the Third Team of the BEST of the BEST
All- Americans from the past 50 Years (EJ’s Douglas, JW
Rocket One and Kiowa Sweet Trey) have been inducted
into the Greyhound Hall of Fame.
In addition to being All-Americans, four were Rural Rube
winners (EJ’s Douglas in 1993 & 1994, JW Rocket One in
1982 & 1983, Izz A Champ in 1971 and K’s Broadway in
1987) and two were Flashy Sir winners (P.L. Greer in 1976
& 1977 and Pat C Rendezvous in 1994).
As was the case with the previous two teams, all of the
Third Team members came from different kennels and
different owners.
Jack Kahn had a greyhound named to the First Team (K’s
Flak) as well as a greyhound named to the Third Team (K’s
Broadway).
Of this Third Team, six of the eight were two-time AllAmericans, further validating the importance of durability
and longevity as key factors in qualifying for these august
teams.
Five of the kennels and/or owners of the eight Third Team
members have been inducted into the Greyhound Hall of
Fame (Chuck Marriott, Vince Berland, Kay Smith, Pat Collins and G.A. “Sonny” Alderson).
Westy Whizzer
Selection of the original annual teams has always been a
subjective process, vulnerable to humane error. Fittingly,
so has this exercise of trying to single out the greatest of
the greats for the last half-century. Your personal all-time
All-American teams might have a totally different look
than the lists that have been assembled here. But isn’t
that one of the reasons that we enjoy this annual process?
--not only to pay tribute to the immortals of the game, but
to start a conversation (in some cases, an argument) on
Miss Whirl
just who are the most venerable of our greatest champions. (article from NGA website)
