NEWION AT LOC by Andy Sackett Syracuse, NY A s great as the 16th Annual “Syracuse Nationals” was, the staff is really looking forward to the 17th Annual because as most of you know, the NYS Fairgrounds is implementing over $50 million dollars in renovations. But don’t worry, they have assured the “Nationals” that what isn’t completed will in no way hinder the show. We like to get there on Wednesday evening and park our motorhome on our vendor space so when Thursday’s move-in day is in full force, we can relax and get ready to enjoy three days of the largest car show in the Northeast. Even though we’ve been there 15 of the 16 years, we still marvel at the variety of vehicles, and the constant growth of the show. We have met a lot of out-of-towners that have become friends even if it is for only one weekend a year. But sometimes, like again this year, they become interested in the “Cavalcade of Cars” show and some will attend, giving Western New Yorkers who didn’t travel to Syracuse the opportunity to see some of the fine machines. “Artie’s Party,” the three-day pinstripe and airbrush jam in the Horticulture Building again was a huge success. They raised $68,000, all of which is donated to Ronald McDonald House Charities of Syracuse. Over the years money raised by the “Syracuse Nationals” and its volunteer Army comprised of hundreds of members of car clubs in Central New York have raised over $920,000. Breaking the $1 million mark is in site and they hope to get there soon, all this generated by volunteer “stripers” and “air brushers” from all over the country and some from Canada I personally like checking out the vendors. You can find everything and anything that is automotive related. There were over 150 vendors at the event this year and I know I didn’t see but a third of them. Some come with big haulers from major manufacturers right on down to the small 10x10 booths selling just the right item you are looking for. There were 600 motorhomes and trailers, and according to the State of New York, they will be renovating the area to make an even larger RV Park with more hook-ups for power and water. A lot of the campers make it a vacation, coming for a full week and visiting many of the nearby sites. Something added a few years ago was the area for the Retro Rods called “Ol’ Skool Roundup.” Rock-aBilly music rings all weekend and there is a Backyard build-off contest. This has become the largest event within the “PPG Syracuse Nationals.” The give-a-way this year was the “Syracuse Nationals Garage Gear Giveaway.” Sponsored by Mac Tools of Waterville, Ohio, not only were there over $26,000 worth of tools but also many of the hand tools were stored in a large professional quality Mac Tools toolbox. Adding to the quality and value was the pinstriping done on the toolbox by artists from “Artie’s Party.” And, oh yes, there was also a car lift included in the giveaway. There were plenty of awards for the car participants but the crème de la crème was the “Gene Winfield Award.” Sponsored by Meguiars, out of all the applicants for the award, it is brought down to the “Select Six.” Gene Winfield chooses the “Select Six” from a field of several dozen applicants. The “Select Six” were two vehicles from Texas, one each from Michigan, Kentucky, Oklahoma and Quebec, Canada. They have a special place set up in the Horticulture Building and are given plenty of display space. As they say, there can be only one winner and this year it was Luc LeBlanc from Victoriasville, Quebec, Canada, with his 1949 Mercury Monarc. For LeBlanc’s efforts he took home the beautiful custom made trophy and $10,000. I could go on for”Largest Car Show in the Northeast,” but better you should check it out yourself. The dates for 2016 are July 15th-17th, and if you want to talk to a Right Coast Rep about the “Syracuse Nationals,” there will be two reps on hand all weekend at the “Cavalcade of Cars” show. 6 Show and Cruise News Entrance to Designer’s Dozen (continued on page 14) Show and Cruise News 7 by John Dumbrosky B rrr! You know real winter would show up sooner or later here on the Niagara Frontier and sure enough, here it is. Like my wise old Grandfather used to say; “Yep, it happens every year around this time”. This is the season when a lot of vintage cars are being worked on to do an upgrade, major repairs or make that long sought after modification. It only makes sense to turn several months of storage into some quality work time. Winter is also a good time to reflect on the past, present and future of our long love affair with the automobile. What began, as a way to replace the horse has become one of the most prominent game changers to our lifestyle and culture. The automobile provided a new freedom of increased mobility as well as a forum for selfexpression. Mechanical innovation and steady progress in technological advancements have taken the car from motorized buggies to comfortable and stylish coaches, to easily operated, reliable transportation modules. Wait a minute, did I say easily operated? Although it’s true you don’t have to get out and crank the engine to start it, or do some kind of hokeypokey pumping the gas pedal, pull the choke and turn a key but have you gotten into a 21st century version of the automobile lately? I know I’m old school and a cheapskate. I drive a 2004 PT Cruiser that I love owning. It’s stylish (at least I think so) and very versatile, able to carry four people comfortably or open the large rear hatch, remove the back seats and carry large awkward loads easily. The dash has analog gauges, knobs and levers, just the way I like em! Now contrast that with the techno panels in a 2016 whatever and this old bird would just sit there helpless. Where’s the ignition switch? Well it seems all I need is the key fob in my pocket and I can just get in, press the START button and we’re good to go. How about backing out of the driveway? No need to put your right arm on the seat back to pull your head around and peer out the rear window, or look in the mirror to sight your fenders down the driveway. No Sir! Just turn on the in-dash television (I think they call it a monitor) and you get a complete view behind you along with sight lines to tell you which way you’re going, left or right. It’s kinda cool but there’s only one channel so if you’re bored with what’s behind you there’s no switching over to ESPN or HBO. But if it’s entertainment you’re after and some times would make the ride more pleasant there’s no need to twist knobs or push buttons. Just call out to your dashboard. “Please play the “Elvis Channel” and next thing you know, “Blue Suede Shoes” is coming out of the twenty or so speakers imbedded throughout the interior. Are you too hot or too cold? Just a simple touch of the screen, a few soft words and next thing you know the cabin is a perfect 72 degrees. Yea Baby! Are you in a strange city looking for gas or a place to eat? Maps and phone books are a thing of the past. Just call out “Hey, where’s the local Applebee’s?” Or how about, “Sunoco gas please.” I guess you don’t need to say please but I was taught to be polite. Remember when it was common practice to stop and offer assistance when someone was broke down on the side of the road? Today instead of flagging down a passing motorist you just press a button by the rear view mirror and call out, “Hey Telstar, send help.” They know who you are and where you are through a satellite connection. In other words a metal box floating above earth can help you faster than a human being driving by in his/her car. Amazing! And now they’ve made the car smart enough to know if it’s going to hit something so if you don’t apply the brakes, the car does it for you. That’s great for people who don’t pay attention when they drive but what if the guy in front of you is a jerk and needs a little nudge to get going? Seriously, something like that makes me wonder, if the car decides there is something in front of it, like snow on the sensor, will you suddenly brake in traffic? And if it causes an accident who’s at fault? Perhaps the most unsettling innovation on the horizon is the driverless car. This old coot will never accept just sitting there and letting the machine do its will. I guess you could say we are coming full circle. Before the automobile ole’ Seabiscuit would pull your buggy. The horse had enough sense not to go in a ditch or run into a tree. And there was no drunk driving, unless the horse got a snoot full of your beer bucket. I guess it will be up to the future generation to decide whether this technology is accepted. It would be kind of cool to jump in the back seat and say out loud, “Home James, and don’t spare the horses.” Anyway, the bond we have with the automobile is as strong as ever. We may not appreciate the horsepower ratings, or the smoothness of a four-speed stick shift like we once did. “Souping up” a car isn’t about adding headers or a bigger carburetor. The interest now is how many kilobits of info can it handle and which control chip do I have in the engine brain module. Whether it’s an out of date vintage automobile or a twenty first century techno-cruiser, Americans still appreciate the open road and the freedom to see what’s beyond the horizon. Long may that freedom continue. Until next time, I’ll be out in the garage. Show and Cruise News 9 photos by Duke Emerson Knoxville, TN K noxville, Tennessee is another great venue for street rodders. Not only a great show but nearby historic Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg are really worth the visit. The first weekend in May also hosts the huge “Dollywood” parade with country singer, Dolly Parton which travels through the heart of Pigeon Forge. I call both areas the “Vacuum Visitor Center” as they can really suck the money out of you. The car show is on both sides of the road in Chilhowee Park and Expo Center, which is next to the zoo. There weren’t as many vendors this year as there usually are but still enough for the visitors. Over 2,000 street rods, customs, muscle cars and street machines attend this event. The dates for this year are May 6th – 8th. 10 Show and Cruise News (continued on page 12) (continued from page 10) Very Scenic 12 Show and Cruise News The Great Smoky Mountain Wheel Entertainment every where you go. Show and Cruise News Magazine has reported on many of these changes. The Ford Lords Car Club discontinued their annual car show and the Tri-Five Car Club hosted their 40th and last car show. There was the passing of legendary custom car designer and builder, George Barris, and the sudden passing of “Goodguys” Founder and President, Gary Meadors. For those of us who have been around hot rodding for any length of time, these were iconic changes to our way of life and passion. Well, sadly there will soon be another change. The March 2016 issue of Show and Cruise News will be the last issue that will be in print. After nearly 29 years of keeping the Western New York and surrounding areas connected with stories and photos from local and national events, keeping everyone posted on dates of upcoming events, it’s time for us to semi-retire. I say semi-retire because we will continue the Magazine digitally on the web. If you go to www.showandcruisenews.com you will see that we have already started posting the monthly issues beginning January 2016. This will give you, the reader, a greater opportunity to check out the advertisers in more depth as we have set up links to their websites, thus giving you more information about their businesses. If we get date changes on car events, which happens quite frequently, we can make the changes immediately instead of waiting until the next issue to make the changes. The decision to change from print to electronic was not an easy one – a decision that we struggled with, and we weighed all factors before making our decision. We have personally gone to many of the shows that we report on and have met hundreds of new friends, some we only see once a year at the event and some have become close personal friends. As you know it is impossible to personally cover all of the shows we report on, and I have to say that we were blessed to have some of the greatest people pitch in and send us photos from many of the shows you have 18 Show and Cruise News enjoyed in print, whose names are listed on page 5. We still plan on using photos from these contributors in the future. John Dumbrosky’s “Tire Tracks” articles have been a big hit with our readers and you will still be able to read them on line, along with Tara Hurlin’s “What Drives You.” Many people don’t know that the Magazine has basically been a two-person operation. I handled the sales, marketing, and article layouts, and my wife did the graphic and computer work needed to publish this Magazine for our readers and advertisers. We are grateful for these 28-plus years because it allowed us to work from home so we could take care of and raise our daughter Ashley, who is one of the biggest motorheads I know. In fact, it was because of her we started the “Cavalcade of Cars” Car Show, which, if you are wondering, will continue. The Magazine gave us the opportunity to see the inner workings of shows like SEMA in Las Vegas, and put on a hot rod show at the Atlantic City Auction. And, we were able to get up close and personal with many of the NASCAR drivers when they attended functions in and around Buffalo. Memories you couldn’t buy. For those loyal readers who have been sending in your renewals for your subscriptions over the past two months, we will be sending you your checks back and you will receive the February and March issues, compliments of us, and for those who will have time left on your subscriptions, we will be refunding the balance after the “Cavalcade of Cars” show is over. I say after, because we are in the midst of putting together another great show for spectators and participants alike. So for now let me just say “THANK YOU” to all the advertisers, readers, friends, and car clubs who have supported the Magazine over the past 28 and a half years. By Tara Hurlin - Writer/Editor for Hagerty Insurance Emilee's Race For A Cure No matter which niche of the hobby that you find yourself in, enthusiasts tend to stick together and support each other – a sign of pure enthusiasm, compassion and comradery. If someone is struggling, car clubs and groups often join forces to help with the cause, and 11-year-old Emilee’s story is a perfect example of just that. Emilee Hurt’s family has always been into racing. Her father, Swain Hurt, has drag raced for a number of years, and her mother, Brenda Hurt, placed 2nd out of the 15 racers in her class during the 2014 NHRA Finals while driving her 2005 Ford Mustang. Emilee Hurt and her little sister, Hailee Hurt, also love the lifestyle and often come along for the ride, so when a 5-yearold Emilee was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in 2010, it only made sense to raise awareness through racing. Juvenile diabetes affects an estimated 80,000 children per year. It is a condition where the body’s immune system attacks and destroys beta cells in the pancreas. Beta cells normally produce insulin, a hormone that helps the body move the glucose from foods into other cells throughout the body for use as energy. When the beta cells are destroyed, no insulin is produced, and the glucose remains in the bloodstream where it can cause serious, life-threatening damage to other organs in the body. To manage her condition, Emilee needs multiple injections of insulin per day, and to make matters worse, her blood sugar levels drop throughout the night. “In the beginning, she was up to 10-12 insulin shots per day,” said Brenda, “I stayed up during the night to keep track of her sugar levels, and at 4am Swain would wake up to take my place, then I would get up at 7am to check again.” Emilee now has a tubeless Omnipod insulin pump that is changed every two days, but her levels still need to be checked regularly, and she is also required to carefully balance her food intake and exercise regularly. Diabetes not only affects the diagnosed person, but it can cause the family heartbreak as well. “It is truly disheartening to watch your child fight for their life every day,” Brenda said, “and at the same time, we are all just trying to live a normal life.” Having such a deep responsibility to living a strict lifestyle can certainly take its toll on someone as young as Emilee, but she is not your average youngster. She is a hero with endless courage, and now that she is a bit older, she not only adheres the a stringent schedule and takes care of her own health needs, she strives to help and educate all children and adults affected by type 1 diabetes. Emilee has a smile that can light up the darkest of rooms; her smile has lit the way through her own fight, and now she is sharing her light with others afflicted with the condition. Emilee loves racing, and her all-time favorite car is the Mustang, hence the family’s commitment to raising money for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation by drag racing their 1989 Ford Mustang. Emilee was so keen on the idea that she designed the awareness ribbon herself, and now she sells various sizes and donates all proceeds to Camp Hendon in Leitchfield, Kent., a diabetic camp for juvenile Type 1 diabetics. “I want every kid like me to be able to come to the camp, and 32 Show and Cruise News these donations will help pay for their fees so their families’ can focus on other medical costs.” Emilee said. The Mustang is now at the chassis shop, Rogue Race Cars in Williamsburg, Ohio, for a full cage installation and mini-tub, and it is scheduled to be back at the Hurt family’s garage by Spring 2016; that’s when the build will really take off. “We have sponsors onboard with us and we are thrilled there are people out there wanting to help with this great cause,” Brenda said, “together we will find a cure.” Stifflers Chassis and Suspension, Downs Ford Racing Team and QA1 were happy to help with the Hurt Family’s dream. “We will do whatever it takes to help find a cure,” Brenda said. The Hurt family can do anything they put their minds to, and little Emilee’s successes are proof. Now they are committed to finding a cure for juvenile diabetes with the hope that someday, no child will have to be burdened with this condition. Brenda and Swain look forward to getting their car on the track for bracket racing. Look for the “Racing for a Cure” 1989 Ford Mustang with a little girl’s bright smiling face featured on the hood, leading the way. WHAT DRIVES Y U?
