BIOGRAPHICAL/HISTORICAL NOTE
Eloi Benjamin Norman, the son of John P. and Adzelle Dupre Pomalow Norman, was born on
August 21, 1854, at Cassandra, Louisiana, one of the oldest steamboat landings on the Red River
(founded in 1827). In his youth, he bought a farm about 10 miles (by river) above Cassandra and
named the landing he built there ―Norman‘s Bar.‖ Norman‘s Bar became a popular stopping
point for steamboats to load cotton, cottonseed, corn, peas, poultry, mill feed, and other farm
products and to unload freight of all kinds. Norman became intimately acquainted with many
steamboat captains. It was during these years that Norman began collecting waybills, newspaper
articles, and books concerning the navigation of the Red River
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
Contained in the collection are a number of steamboat photographs, research materials, and
artifacts compiled by E. B. Norman of Alexandria, Rapides Parish, Louisiana, and his son, Dr. N.
Philip Norman of New York City. The material pertains mainly to the history of steamboating
on the Lower Mississippi and Red Rivers and includes 587 photographs of steamboats; notes and
historical data relative to various boats; 80 published volumes on rivers, steamboating, the
histories of Louisiana parishes and regions, and travel in the South; periodicals on waterways,
including National Waterways, Waterways Journal, and Waterways; newspapers and newspaper
clippings concerning river news and transportation, 1833-1941; miscellaneous waybills and bills
of lading, and correspondence.
