The Importance and Value of Strategic Planning
Dear Wexford Homeowners,

and the management staff. This
overwhelming endorsement confirms
that our members see and understand the

On January 12th, the Finance Committee facilitated
a strategic planning workshop with the Board and
management staff to review our plan in light of current
local and national trends as well as our perception of
Wexford’s strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats.
The group concluded that our four existing strategies, in
conjunction with our Mission, Vision and Core Values,
were still valid and constituted an appropriate road map
for setting priorities, maintaining focus and perpetuating
behavioral expectations.
The staff then went to work to formulate metrics and
tactics to carry out the operational phase of the plan. On
February 20th, the Board approved the 2015 plan that is
available on the Members Only section of website.
We really like the collaborative nature of this process
because it fully engages the creativity of our senior staff
and establishes ownership for the elements of the plan
that they are responsible for implementing. Susan Fishel
uses the plan as the cornerstone of our performance
management system to develop performance objectives
and contracts with direct reports and initiate deployment
throughout the organization.
The next time you observe exceptional staff performance,
a noticeable change in the appearance of our common
area, recognition for the quality of our golf course or
tennis facilities and capital projects being completed on
time and under budget, remember that it is not by chance.
It is the result of a well-managed team that collectively
owns the strategic plan and takes responsibility for the
actions and outcomes they have identified as being critical
for success.
On behalf of the Board and the management team, I
would like to thank you for helping institutionalize
strategic planning as one of our critical processes.

The biggest event of the year is BACK and it’s
more EGGSellent than ever!
Join Sarah Smith down at the playground area for
another exciting morning of activities, music, bunny
hop races, bounce houses and of course the Easter
Egg Hunt. We will have the Easter Bunny back for
pictures and as always, the hunt will be divided into
three groups to maximize egg collections. All events
are weather permitting.
Don’t forget to join us for brunch afterwards.

The Blue Angels airshow was
cancelled back in 2013 and luckily they’re back! This is an event
that you don’t want to miss!

Eliminate the Baseliner
L
ast month in our clinics, we worked on attacking the
net side of our opponents when hitting any shots from
inside the court. The goal of this strategy is to eliminate the baseliner, therefore eliminating the lob when coming
in to the net. The next time you are hitting an approach shot
or a volley, try attacking the net side — and see how quickly
you can win points!

Gearing up for Events
H
ave you been playing well
with your group and then
all of a sudden you get into
a tournament situation, such as a ProAm, and feel like you lost everything?
I think we all have been there at one
point or another. Once we get into those
pressure situations (member guest, spring
invitational, Pro-Ams, etc.), we start
trying to do things outside of our comfort
level — which results in swings changes.
Try doing this: As you are out on the
golf course in these situations, envision
yourself somewhere comfortable, like
your favorite spot on the driving range.
As you swing, concentrate only on
fundamentals such as balance, posture
or set-up. This will help you calm
down and get back to the swing you are
comfortable making.
Just keep it simple — you will play
better golf.
WWGA News
Fore & Pour (and We Don’t Keep Score) — Join the ladies of WWGA on
the course at 4 p.m. Tuesdays throughout the Spring, Summer and Fall. We will
play four holes, followed by BYOB drinks and apps at the Harbour Center. This is
a great way to meet new players and work on your game in a low-stress, friendly,
group-play setting. (Tee times will be reserved.)

Changing Our Fertilizers

his year we are taking a different approach to
fertilizing the golf course. In years past we relied
heavily on inorganic fertilizers to help maintain a
healthy turf. These products are great for producing high
volume growth, vigor and color — but with our soil structure,
we need more. That is why this year we will be using more
natural/organic fertilizers, such as humic acid based products.
There are many benefits to humic acid. It improves soil
structure and porosity. It increases the uptake of other key
minerals including phosphorous, sulphur and nitrogen, as
well as other micronutrients. It also will stimulate or imGolf Course Superintendent prove soil microbial activity.

ongratulations to our 2015
Wexford II Ladies Golf Team
— Helen Aitken, Gillian
Curley, Tracey Gregory, Joanne Ramsay,
Mary Ann Soldo, Dorothy Taylor, and
alternates Trish Wilson, Mary Reed and
Lori Queen!
Our Wexford Ladies won their Division, beating tough competition from
teams from Hidden Cypress, Moss Creek,
Colleton River, Dataw, Callawassie and
Hampton Hall over the course of February and March, playing through some
very tough weather conditions on some
very challenging courses.
As a result of this win, the team will
move up to Division I, where they will
compete against the top teams in the
league in 2016. They’ll be honored at
the annual awards luncheon to be held at
Long Cove on Thursday, March 26th.

nce again, another Wexford
Plantation Intercollegiate
has passed. I wanted to
thank you all for your support and
help for making the tournament
such a wonderful success.
The coaches said that the golf
course was in the best shape they
have ever seen, and all the teams
enjoyed their experience and time
at Wexford. A big part of the enjoyment comes from all of you making
everyone feel so welcome. Thank
You!
Also, Scott and his staff, Chris
and the golf course staff, and Chef
Frank and the F&B staff all make a
huge impact on the tournament and
are a big reason why everyone has
such a great experience. Thank you
to all of them!
A big thanks to all the volunteers
— thanks for coming out, driving
carts, baking sweets and just saying
hello. It means a lot and goes a long
ways.
I am looking forward to next
year’s event and I will see you all

Wine & Wickets
Sunday, April 26th, from 4-6 pm
oin your friends and neighbors on the croquet lawn for some
fast-paced 20 minute games of golf croquet. This is an easy
game that anyone can play — no experience required! Bring
a beverage of your choice and a snack to share if you wish. Wear
white or not (light-colored clothing is fine) and flat-soled shoes.
After croquet, we’ll meet at the Clubhouse for Pub Night. Contact
Jan Jones for more information!
The croquet lawn will be closed April 4th from 8 a.m. to
12 p.m.

Boat Maintenance
he sea is calling and your heart is
listening, but your boat is not yet
ready to venture forth. One of the
joys of living in this wonderful coastal climate is that we don’t have to remove our
boats from the water for the winter season.
This is however a double-edged sword;
some of those little marine beasties have
been diligently making comfortable homes
on the bottom of your boat and in your
cooling water systems — which, if left undisturbed will lead to many things… most
of them expensive.
So what do you need to do? First, a full
inspection should be completed. The
best way to do that is to wash your boat,
get down and look at the little dings and
scratches that have happened over the past
couple of months. If possible, have a diver
come and give the bottom a quick clean, he
will let you know if you need a bottom job.
Take a moment and clean under the outboard cover. Check the oil and the plugs.
Give all the electric connections a little
push to make sure they are firm (nothing
worse than a connection that vibrates loose
and then you have to figure out why the
engine isn’t running). Look at your hoses
and their connection and make sure the
clamps are tight. Check for slow leaks by
rubbing a finger on the underside.
Signal Flags
Has anyone noticed that the
signal flags are being changed
every couple of weeks? I am using
them to send messages, pretty
easy at first but I will start using
more complex and arcane signals
as we go on. I think you will be
amazed at how much info can be
communicated through a few flags.
Check your oil, and change it if necessary. Check the steering connections,
grease them if necessary. Make sure the
wheel doesn’t bind when turning lock to
lock. Run up all your electronics. Check
the expiration dates on your flares and fire
extinguisher. Pull all the life jackets out and
dry them if necessary, then take a good look
— are you willing to trust your life to it?
Examine your dock lines, make sure they
are flexible and clean. Look in the anchor
well, run that line out and ensure it is still
in good condition. Check your onboard
tool kit, yes you should have an onboard
tool kit, make sure the tools have not rusted and are useable. If you have one, check
the operation of the head and ensure it is
clean and flushing properly. In fact, once a
month I used to put a quarter cup of vegetable oil in the head and let it run through,
it keeps the rubber valves supple and helps
to coat the lines to ensure smooth flow. You
can also use a head cleaner to do the same
thing (keeps the tank smelling sweet).
Get down in the bilge and see what you
have there; oily water is not a good sign,
clean it out with a sponge and dispose of
properly. Then see how long it takes to collect again; if it collects quickly then there
could be a problem somewhere — better
to find it now rather than on a voyage. (I
Know, voyage may be getting carried away,
but I like the sound of it.)
There are of course many other things
you can do but the above apply to pretty
much every boat out there, so like the Boy
Scouts “Let’s be prepared.”

y the time you read this,
we will be preparing or in
the process of switching
out our winter annuals and planting our spring/summer flowers.
I wanted to take this opportunity
and give everybody a brief rundown on what we have in store for
the upcoming season.
We will use Hibiscus in a few
areas, mainly the front entrance
and around the Clubhouse flag
pole. These are great tropical
plants that love the sun and the
heat, which is great for this area of
the country.
Pentas are another great flower
that we will be using some of that
loves the sun and heat and can
still grow if we run into a dry spell
some this summer. They are also
attractive to butterfly and hummingbirds.
We will also be planting begonias and coleus. They make a good
pair when planted together, as well
as being highly tolerant to heat and
humidity.
There will also be a few surprises sprinkled in throughout the
plantation and pool area, so keep
your eyes open!
