The project falls under the 12th batch of road and infrastructure works aimed at reducing traffic and facilitating travel between the city of Doha and the new Hamad International Airport. It also represents one of the larger projects Ashghal has undertaken, as the F-Ring Road will connect the Doha Port, both the old and new airports, the Corniche, and the Industrial area. Work began when converting the Air Armament roundabout into a junction and a tunnel, with the junction leading to Al-Wakra, and the tunnel taking travelers from the air or sea ports to the Industrial Area. GWC frozen Storage Warehouse and vegetables must be stored at -18 C, whereas general food items such as cheese or pickles do best at +3 C. Finally, confectionary items such as chocolate are stored at +18 C, again to ensure its safety but also to ensure the preservation of flavor. Facilities that offer more than one storage temperature are separated into chambers, with the temperature in each chamber closely monitored. F ood security addresses a fundamental human need to know that the food and drink we are consuming will do us no harm. As part of the National Vision 2030’s efforts to ensure Qatar’s human development through enacting health initiatives across the board, ensuring the safe handling and storage of food has become one of the nation’s priorities. Gulf Warehousing Company has done its part to provide the best cold storage solutions possible to the nation – here are some of the considerations that must be taken into account when providing refrigerated and chilled warehousing. The Right Equipment Gulf Warehousing Company has found that the Very Narrow Aisle (VNA) racking system, which stores more items in less space by narrowing the space between the racks, is perfect for food storage. In refrigerated and chilled environments, however, modifications have to be made to most VNA systems, in order to avoid the hydraulics and oils in the systems from freezing and seizing up. For our employees, we find that thermal wear imported directly from the UK ensures their safety in these extreme temperatures. The Right Qualifications Ensuring that the location you have chosen to store your items has been properly inspected and certified is high on the priority list. The industry recognizes both the ISO 22000 and the Hazard analysis and critical control points (HACCP) as the best industry practices, both addressing the various biological, chemical, and physical hazards that might endanger food safety and provide processes to address these risks. It is important to note that these are certifications that are given to sites, not organizations, which means that it is the site that is inspected and certified, such as our facilities inTHE Street 15, Street 41, and the INNER Logistics Village Qatar. 8 Gulf Warehousing Company Internal Newsletter THE The Right Practices GWC ST. 15 Chilled Warehouse The Right Temperature It is important to store every food item at the right temperature to ensure both its safety and its structural integrity. Frozen meats and vegetables must be stored at -18 C, whereas general food items such as cheese or pickles do best at +3 C. Finally, confectionary items such as chocolate are stored at +18 C freshness of the food items by distributing the foods with the earliest expiry dates first for consumption. These expiry dates are managed and monitored with a specifically designed Warehouse Management System (WMS), which tracks the whereabouts and expiry dates of the stored items through a number of hand-held RF terminals which report back to a central server. Our clients can then refer to reports published in real-time to see where there items are at any time, providing complete transparency. Fostering a spirit of goodwill among the company employees during the holy month of Ramadan, Gulf Warehousing Company invited its staff to an Iftar Dinner at the Logistics Village Qatar on July 17th. The meal was attended by over 1100 of the company’s employees, and by several members of management and heads of department. The camaraderie and delight generated at this event is sure to resonate beyond the end of the holy month. On this occasion, Group CEO Mr. Ranjeev Menon commented: “The lessons of the month of Ramadan are many, among them are compassion and empathy with your fellow man, and by sharing this meal and helping the observant break their fast together, the company hopes to strengthen team spirit between the employees thereby helping them to contribute to the society at large.” GWC Basketball Team Rebranded as GWC Shaqabs Following their rapid rise to success at the Al-Khor Tournament, the GWC Basketball Team has been rebranded as the GWC Shaqabs. To explain what this means for the local logistics sector, as well as to outline the types of facilities available to service this sector, The Link sat with Mr. Ranjeev Menon, Group Chief Executive Officer of Gulf Warehousing Company, for his opinions and views on the sector. THE INNER Ranjeev Menon, Group CEO How much of a growth industry is the Oil and Gas sector in the State of Qatar? That’s an obvious but good question. Although the moratorium placed by the government on the North Fields projects in 2005 remains in effect, there have been significant contracts signed and projects undertaken. QP, for example, announced plans in May 2014 to redevelop the Bul Hanine offshore oilfield, investing $11 billion to double the produc- QP Oil Rig 10 10 tion of the current 45,000 barrels of oil a day by 2028. The Bul Hanine project is also responsible for the Barzan Gas Project, which will bring an estimated 48.1 mcm of gas per day by 2015. These, and many other projects have ensured that Qatar is still the largest LNG supplier in the world, producing 77 million tons per year since 2010, with gas reserves of 25.1 tcm, in addition to being a major oil producer in the region. How has this affected the logistics industry in the State of Qatar? This production rate has allowed for a downstream investment of more than $13 billion since 2013, and the commitment to public works and utilities has provided a total investment of $13.7 billion dollars in the last five years, and a further $8.24 billion in contracts to be awarded in the next three to four years in the utilities sector. All this, in addition to the country’s drive for economic diversification and sustainability as outlined in the Qatar National Vision 2030, will contribute to the rising revenues of the logistics industry, projected at $11,930 million by 2016. How does Gulf Warehousing Company directly contribute to the Oil and Gas sector? GWC has constructed a number of industryspecific facilities that directly cater to the Oil and Gas sector. Our Ras Laffan and Messaieed facilities are essentially adjacent to the operations of the major players in the petrochemical sector, reducing our road transport time considerably. The Ras Laffan (RLIC) facility is spread over a 38,500 sqm area and houses a state-of-the-art 16,000 sqm warehouse with latest selective and double deep racking system with total storage capacity of 20,310 pallet positions, 4500 sqm bulk storage area with a 75 ton overhead crane, an automated vertical storage carousel for high value and sensitive parts storage, 10,000 sqm logistics base for tubular storage and highly secured ISO tank storage facility for bulk chemicals. The RLIC Warehouse has been approved by Ministry of Environment and Civil Defense authorities for Gulf Warehousing Company Internal Newsletter THE ISSUE I Gulf Warehousing Company External Newsletter DOWNLOAD Ras Laffan Industrial City storage of various types of hazardous materials used in Oil & Gas Industry. Our logistics complex in Mesaieed has multiple hi-tech warehouses equipped with latest technologies to ensure world class logistics management to all our clients, supported by state-of-theart IT infrastructure, international best practices and globally accepted quality management standards. The facility consists of 3 purpose built, 4,500 sqm warehouses and 40,000 sqm open yard facility strategically located in the Mesaieed Light Industries area. The Warehouses has temperature controlled bulk and rack storage to cater for multiple storage conditions and requirement and a dedicated hazardous material storage facility with highest level of safety standards and separate chambers for storage of different classes of chemicals according to its compatibility. Are any of the Oil and Gas specific services provided through the flagship facility, the Logistics Village Qatar? Of course – The Logistics Village Qatar serves as a transportation hub for its Oil and Gas customers, with the Gulf Warehousing Company’s transport team performing cross-docking of heavy-weight, 45ft length tubular shipments for oil and gas industry from closed OCTOBER | 2014 containers to flatbed trailers from LVQ by using specially designed handling equipment and qualified riggers for Oil and Gas customers. LVQ warehouse also acts as a collections point from various local suppliers for Oil and Gas companies who are delivering goods for them and who cannot directly access their warehouses in restricted areas. We will deliver these goods to the end users at fixed intervals. Furthermore, we provide palletization, shrink filming and strapping of cargo; crating of export shipments with serial number tracking; and consolidation of cargo to FTL loads for delivery to site with verification against POs. Where do you see the collaboration between the Oil and Gas sector and the logistics industry going? I believe both have a sincere interest in seeing the infrastructure of the nation growing – a belief shared by the government. The State of Qatar has already invested $7.4 billion in the New Doha Port and $1 billion for the Qatar Cargo Complex at Hamad International Airport, and yet there is still a gap that remains to be filled. I therefore see a continued collaboration between the major corporations of both sectors to direct the creation of the necessary infrastructure required to ensure the smooth supply chain operations of all sectors, including Oil and Gas. As a carrier, packer, customs broker, and air freight agent, Gulf Warehousing Company has worked with museums, galleries and private owners to provide the best guarantee of discretion, security and efficiency for any transport or installation request. At every stage, certain elements can ensure a successful showing or delivery of each piece. Basic details can be crucial when shipping artwork, which is why our experts recommend getting the proper details of the shipment, such as number of crates, dimensions, and weight, as well as whether or not the piece is insured (it is highly recommended that all shipped artwork be insured). Once a piece arrives at a customs point, it is imperative that all documents related to the piece be in order. A missing commercial invoice, packing list, or certificate of origin, among other possible documents might hold up the clearance process, which is why it is advised to discuss which documents are necessary when importing or exporting a piece. Fine Art transport vehicles must also contain very specific features. GWC’s fine art trucks are all temperature controlled, with railings and straps to secure the shipment, and proper suspension mechanisms installed to ensure that the items moved do not shake along the way. Packing the pieces also follows some very specific practices that rely on the type of piece transported. A painting, therefore, may need corrugated paper to protect its services, while sculptures might benefit from heavy-duty bubble wrap. All pieces packed and unpacked must be handled by highly skilled specialists trained to deal with these artifacts. Transporting works of art is a challenging activity. Most journeys represent a speci¬fic and even very new situations in terms of handling the irreplaceable works of art, the volume carried, the formalities to be completed, security, costs and deadlines. A strong understanding between you and the company handling your request can make all the difference.
