Myers Beach! Spring is a wonderful
time to be in paradise. With the
craziness of spring break gone, this
month is definitely a quieter, gentler
version of season, but there are still
plenty of fun things to do! First and
foremost, April is the month when
the stars come out – literally – at our
Fort Myers Beach Film Festival
that begins on April 21st.
Check
out
all
the
beautifully restored muscle cars at
Santini Plaza on April 2nd, at the
Classic Car Cruise In and Annual
Snowbird Festival. There’ll be lots
of great eats, over 40 arts and crafts
vendors and much, much more.
Be sure and take the
opportunity to sample some of our
island’s ‘pink gold’ on April 2nd,
when St. Raphael’s Episcopal
Church holds it’s last All You Can
Eat Shrimp Dinner of the season.
One thing that is definitely
not to be missed is the Friends of
the Arts’ final concert of the 2016
season – Jo List and Friends –
on April 7th. The quality of these
shows are mind-blowing for a small
town like ours, and Jo’s event is the

For golfers and wannabe-golfers, the Fort Myers Beach
Chamber of Commerce is hosting
their annual Mini Masters Golf

Outdoor Recreation on Fort Myers Beach
With mild weather and the chaos
of spring break and the Shrimp Festival over,
April is the perfect month to get out and enjoy
the beautiful opportunities our island offers for
outdoor recreation. Whether you’re looking for
a leisurely stroll and some great scenery or
want to get a day’s worth of exercise paddling
or biking in the sunshine, Fort Myers Beach
has something for everyone - including the
beach itself, of course!.
BOWDITCH POINT PARK
Bowditch Point Regional Park is
a beautiful and serene 17-acre park that
encompasses the entire northern tip of
Estero Island. Named for Nathaniel Bowditch,
an astronomer and navigator who was
responsible for perfecting celestial navigation
still utilized today, the park area provides a
quiet respite for many residents and visitors.
Purchased by Lee County in 1987 to
save it from development, the Park is actually
a ‘dual use facility’ in which approximately
7 acres are a developed park for passive
recreational use and the remaining 10 acres
are designated as a restoration/preserve area.
Walking trails carry visitors through
varied environments and offer an excellent
opportunity for tortoise and bird watching while
enjoying panoramic views of Estero Bay. This
is also one of the first beaches that Lee County
Parks and Recreation made accessible for
individuals with disabilities from parking
area to the Gulf of Mexico. There is also an
accessible boat dock. The free docks feature
10 slips for boats up to 28-feet in length and
a paddlecraft launch onto the Great Calusa
Blueway Paddling Trail.
Bowditch Point Park is a designated
Great Florida Birding Trail site. http://
floridabirdingtrail.com/. A community of gopher
tortoises makes it home in the park and are
a favorite of park visitors. Please watch them
from a distance and do not feed them.
The park area also features tables and grills,
available on a first come-first serve basis, in
a shaded tropical setting sure to please any
picnicker. Restroom and changing facilities
are available as well.
There is access to over 75 parking spaces
within the park at $2 per hour. Maximum
vehicle length 20 feet, no trailer or vehicle
trailer parking is permitted. Bowditch Point
Park is also accessible via the Beach Trolley.

‘best kept secret’ - the 60 acres of unspoiled
barrier island sanctuary found in Matanzas
Pass Preserve. Featuring over 1.25 miles of
well-maintained walking trails through four
separate ecosystems that mirror what the
island looked like when the Calusa Indians
roamed its shores, the Preserve contains one
of the last maritime oak hammocks in Lee
County. Much of the trail is on raised recycled
material boardwalk. The gazebo on the
shores of Estero Bay offers cooling breezes
and beautiful views. There is also a paddle
craft landing that is part of the Great Calusa
Blueway Paddling Trail so you can also paddle
in and enjoy the preserve.
Watched over by Lee County Parks
and an extremely dedicated group of local
volunteers called the ‘Friends of Matanzas
Pass Preserve’, the trails are a perfect way to
spend a quiet afternoon listening to the wind
whisper through the trees. Bring your smart
phone and pick up a QR code self-guided tour
brochure at the preserve entrance. Learn more

The Oysters - 20 Years of Rock and Roll
The
Oysters
were
something no one on the beach
had ever seen before - how can
three guys with acoustic guitars
and a set of conga drums rock?
But rock they did, and everyone
loved it.
“People would plan their
vacations around when we were
playing,” said Bryce. “We went to
Key West, and our fans followed
us there. There was a lot of alcohol
involved, and a lot of fun - it was a
crazy, crazy time.”
But it was more than
just booze. Call them a milder,
gentler version of who they used
to be, but Bryce and Joe still have
that special something that draws
people to watch them perform,
and Bryce still gets calls from fans
who want to make sure they’re
playing when they visit. Oh, and
did we mention they have heaps of
talent?
“One thing that always
got to me was the fact that we
played covers,” Bryce said. “I
mean, I like playing other peoples’
songs and making them our own,
but when you’re opening for a
national act and you’re singing a
Joan Jett song it just hurts because
you know the audience isn’t seeing
the real you.”
Though both Bryce and
Joe have been in other bands including national acts - where
they wrote original tunes, they
are especially proud of a new trio
they’ve put together with drummer
Scott Chesser - a band called
The Gist - that features all new
songs written by them that truly
showcase the depth of musical
knowledge and creativity they
possess. We won’t give it away,
but look for a performance that
will be like nothing anyone’s seen
before - much like The Oysters
were all those years ago. Hint - for

These days, you can
catch Bryce and Joe at their regular
gigs - Thursdays from 5-10pm at
Nervous Nellies and Saturdays
from 6-10pm at the Lighthouse Tiki
Bar.
“It’s amazing really we are both the lead singers of
our band - something that usually
never works - but we’ve been
together for so long it clicks,” Joe
said. “We also play one night
a week at The Boathouse in
Cape Coral. Between that, both
of our daytime businesses, and
rehearsing two or three nights a
week, we’re pretty busy.”
The
Oysters’
lineup
consists
mostly of classic rock, with a
little country thrown in. This they
spice up with their signature
lively and hilarious banter, which
guarantees that the audience will
have a good time. These are two
guys who are happy with their
life, and it shows.
“You know, we’ve both
traveled all over the country and
there’s just no place like Fort
Myers Beach,” said Bryce when
we asked him to reflect back on
the years. “The experience here

To most locals - and
more than a few regular visitors
- the two men who make up the
band called The Oysters need
no introduction. Joe Monroe and
Bryce Barnes have been part of
the music scene on this island
for so long it almost seems as if
they’ve always been here, and
those of us who were around
in the early 2000’s have fond - if
slightly hazy - memories of when
their original band - The Oysters
Fantastic Band - ruled the beach.
During their reign, which occurred
during the halcyon years before
Hurricane Charley - when Casey’s
Alley still rocked and The Reef
still roared - it almost seems as
though the island was a happier,
more innocent place. But what
really strikes someone listening
to Joe and Bryce perform is the
pure, deep, talent they possess.
Even when they are playing cover
songs, there is a sense that they
belong somewhere far from here,
on a big stage with lots of lights
and a stadium full of screaming
fans. Because through all the
years, what first drew people to
their shows still remains - the
energy and love they have for
each other and their audience.
Bryce and Joe came
to our emerald shores on entirely
different roads. Both grew up
loving and playing music - Bryce
told us his first guitar was a plastic
one from JC Penney that wasn’t
even playable - ‘I wanted to be like
Keith Partridge from the Partridge
Family’, he said - but the two did
not meet until they’d both moved
to Fort Myers Beach, some 20+
years ago.
“I came from rural
Vermont - where I had a guitar in
my hand from the age of 2 and
taught myself how to play. I came
to the beach with my band Engine
Joe (a band that also included
A200 powerhouse Bob Tabarrini)
- we had 27 original songs and
we were supposed to be on Fort
Myers Beach for one month before
heading to California,” Joe said.
“That was 21 years ago.”
Bryce - who was born in
the city of Toledo, Ohio and caught
the music bug from his neighbor,
who was the nephew of famous
DJ Alan Freed (hint, he coined
the term ‘rock and roll’) came here
to be in the band Blackfoot - who
would go on to national renown.
“When
Rickey
(Medlocke) left to join Lynyrd
Skynyrd, and Stet (Howland) left
for W.A.S.P., John Housley and
I got together with T-Bone and
started the Oyster Fantastic Band,”
Bryce said. “T-Bone played with us
for awhile, then Frank Thomson,
and when Frankie left, Joe left
Engine Joe to fill Frank’s spot.”

all, it has supported both of our
careers for over 20 years.”
The bottom line, Bryce
and Joe told us, is that it’s always
been about the music.
“It’s the one thing
that’s been the only constant
in our worlds,” Bryce said.
“People change, venues change,
everything changes. But the
music - it’s always there.”

Film Festival Celebrates 10th Anniversary
One the best things
about April on Fort Myers Beach
is our annual Film Festival. Now
celebrating its 10th anniversary
in 2016, this unique island event
really does make the ‘stars come
out’, and this year will be the extra
special because organizers have
planned for a mix of old and new.
“This year we’re going
to be focusing on films from the
past to the future,” said Executive
Director Janeen Paulauskis. “I’ve
been with the festival since day
one, so this has been a lot of fun
going back and reliving those
memories as I plan for this year’s
event.”
Film
festivals
previously sponsored by the
Town of Fort Myers Beach were a yearly occurrence on our
island from 2001-2005, when a
post-Charley council decided to
stop funding the event. These
early festivals were a huge hit in
our little community, bringing in
names like Tim Curry and Hilary
Duff, with hundreds of films being
submitted. For years after, much
talk was heard about bringing it
back as an independent nonprofit,
and in 2012 the Friends of the
Arts organization was formed and
returned the popular festival to its

earlier glory.
Janeen
told
us
that - over the past few
months - filmmakers from all
over the United States have
been submitting their shorts,
documentaries and full-length
features for award consideration
by judges at the Fort Myers Film
Festival.
“The Festival continues
to delight audiences of all
ages as we celebrate the art
of
independent
filmmaking,”
she said. “We are also going to
have some of our past filmmaker
winners and actors returning, as
they remember us and the film
festival fondly. I keep hearing
from more and more of them including a young actress who
now has a starring role on the
television show NCIS.”
The Festival kicks off
on Wednesday, April 20 at 2
p.m. with the opening ceremony
at the Beach Theater, 6425
Estero Blvd., Fort Myers Beach,
followed by full day of screenings
at the theater until 11pm.

the theater) with lunch and learn
workshops on Friday, April 22
and Saturday, April 23, 11 a.m. –

These educational workshops give attendees the
opportunity to learn from seasoned professionals
in the industry about the nuts and bolts of
filmmaking in a panel discussion format.
“Our Friday workshop will feature the
folks from Red Flight Pictures, who are always
very popular, and on Saturday the workshop
will be all about the journey of taking a short,
7-minute film and making it into a 90-minute
feature,” Janeen told us. “The idea is to get
filmmakers with low budgets interested in making
films.”
“Also on Friday, join us for our fan
favorite, the ‘Film on the Beach’,” Paulauskis
continued. “This event is free and open to the
community. Featured is Disney’s award-winning
film, “Inside Out”.”
Sunday closes out the Fort Myers
Beach Film Festival with the awards ceremony
at 2 p.m. Immediately following the ceremony the
winning films will be shown at the Beach Theater.
Tickets for this jewel of the Fort Myers
Beach spring season are $7 per screening
and $30 and $40 for the Friday and Saturday
workshops, respectively. Or if you want to attend

Progress in Paradise
What’s Going on With Estero Blvd?
Those of you who haven’t been
to our island in a few months are no doubt
wondering what’s going on. Confronted with
a maze of Bob’s Barricades upon coming
over the bridge, visitors to our island this
month will understandably have questions.
The most important answer is, yes, we are
open for business and what’s happening is
a long-needed water and road improvement
project that will eventually benefit everyone.
And as with any improvements that involve
a heavily-traveled roadway like Estero
Boulevard, there will be some delays but
local businesses and the Town of Fort
Myers Beach are working hard to ensure
those delays are minimal and our guests’
stay on the island remains a pleasant one.
The first part of this project,
called ReFresh Fort Myers Beach, actually
broke ground in 2013 when workers began
replacing the Town’s aging – and often
broken – water system. Approved by a huge
majority of island voters via referendum in
2008, the project started with side streets off
of Estero Boulevard and moved to the main
road in anticipation of Lee County’s plans to
upgrade Estero with sidewalks, landscaping
and water drainage. The second part of the
project, run by Lee County (owner of Estero
Blvd.) is a reconstruction of the boulevard
itself - including long-needed upgrades such
as sidewalks, bicycle paths, new sewer

lines and drainage improvements.
The really good news for April
is that the first phase of the Estero Blvd.
part of the waterline replacement project is
complete, as workers have finished laying
in all the water pipes and a new natural
gas line between Time Square and Lovers
Lane. The bottlenecks resulting from
alternating single lane traffic in certain areas
is now pretty much resigned to memory, as
workers are able to keep two lanes of traffic
flowing while they finish sealing off the old
water pipe and do some patchwork on side
streets.
Kaye Molnar of Cella Molnar and
Associates, spokesperson for both projects,
told us that – throughout the month of April –
the county’s project – from Crescent Street
to Lovers Lane – will be humming right
along.
“During April, the county’s
crews will basically be doing three things:
continuing with the installation of sanitary
sewer lines under Estero Boulevard on the
bay side; then, once they get far enough
ahead, they will drop back and remove the
sidewalk in order to install conduits for future
lighting and fiber optics under the sidewalk
area,” she said. “Pretty quickly after that,
they will put the sidewalk back in.”

complete with all the additions –
such as bigger sidewalks – depicted
on the project’s website, www.

At press time, the county’s
workers have installed new sanitary
sewer lines from Crescent Street
down to Tropical Shores Way.
Those traversing this section of the
boulevard in the first part of April
will notice traffic shifting from side of
Estero to the other, as crews begin to
reslope the road.
“When the road is finished,
the drainage system will be in the
middle so Estero Boulevard will
slope towards the center,” Molnar
said. “To accomplish that and still
keep two travel lanes open, traffic
lanes will be shifted around so be
prepared to switch from side to side.”
Molnar told us that – except for
unforeseen, intermittent problems
- two lanes of traffic are kept open
at all times during this work, and
that pedestrians are re-routed to an
adjacent newly asphalted area to
walk on while the sidewalk is torn up.
The Town is working with visitors,
residents and businesses to address
their biggest concerns and schedule
work hours accordingly. For safety
reasons, much of the work must be
done during daylight hours but work
is halted on weekends to make way
for visitors. Keep in mind that the
busiest traffic times are between
3pm and 5pm, with traffic relatively
light the rest of the day usually.

A Field Guild to Fort Myers Beach: Manatees
One of the most iconic Fort Myers Beach residents is
the manatee, however many people don’t know that there are three
species of manatees that exist in the world: the West Indian, African
and Amazonian. In North America we have the West Indian manatee
subspecies - the aptly named Florida Manatee - as one of our many
“snowbird” residents. They can be found along Florida’s coasts and the
Caribbean during the winter and in summer travel as far north as the
Carolinas and out towards Louisiana, although they have been seen
in Rhode Island and in Texas during their summer travels. Florida
manatees can be found in both fresh and salty water as long as it is
warm. They cannot survive in cold water and rarely move into waters
below 68 degrees Fahrenheit due to their slow metabolism and lack of
insulating fat. Seems a bit odd seeing how large they are, but in fact
20% of their body mass is made up of stomach and intestines. Guess
it takes a lot of “guts” to be a manatee. (Yes it’s a bad pun, but moving
on).
Manatees are mostly solitary animals but during cold spells
manatees can be seen grouped together - known as aggregations in warmer shallow waters to stay out of the cold. They will also form
mating herds when a female is ready to breed. Twelve or more males
will follow a single female trying to mate with her. After breeding the
males head off and the female raises the baby, called a calf, by herself.
She then carries the calf for twelve months and gives birth underwater.
The calf learns how to swim about an hour after birth, but will nurse for
another one to two years. No wonder females only breed every two to
five years.
Manatees are known for their gentle disposition and slow
moving pace. These traits helped them earn the nickname ‘sea cow’.
That’s as far as the relationships to cows to go as manatees come from
the same line as elephants. Most manatee species even have vestigial
toenails on their flippers that look a lot like elephant toenails. Vestigial
body parts are parts of the body that no longer serve a function, but still
exist in the body. Manatees are vegetarians. They can eat up to nine
percent of their body weight every day eating aquatic plants such as
turtle grass, eel grass, cordgrass, as well as many others. They’re not
picky.
The Florida Manatee has no natural predators, people
however are another story. Historically manatees were hunted for food,
but today they are protected under the Marine Mammal Protection Act,
which prohibits the harassment and killing of all marine mammals.
The biggest threats to manatee survival are collisions with boats, loss
of warm water habitat and sea grass fields for food, entanglement in
fishing gear, and red tide. So I can’t stress enough please watch out for
the Florida Manatee when boating around Fort Myers Beach and please
pick up fishing line off the beach. The manatees will thank you for it.

Street Performer Spotlight
JR Norman: Beachscape Artisan
“Season” is winding down, but Time Square is still a great
place to see some fantastic entertaining artists. The term “artist” is often
thrown around when referring to street performers, but this month our
spotlight is on a true “beachscape artisan”: JR Norman.
Outside of “balloon girl” Nadja (coming to the May issue of
Sand Life Magazine), JR Norman is definitely one of the most seen artists
at Time Square. He can usually be found painting his masterpieces at
the corner of 1st Street and Estero Blvd in Time Square. Norman paints
beach and island scenes, his famous custom name signs with tropical
themes, and now he offers his handmade surfboards that he paints with
custom tropical images.
Originally from Key West, Norman knows a thing or two about
tropical scenes and he has been painting those images on “the street”
since he was 15 years old. From an early age, Norman, now 57 year
old, concentrated on two things: painting and surfing. Though surfing
was one of his loves, it wasn’t going to be his career choice. So, he
took his love for all things tropical and put it on almost anything that
he could take a brush to. While Norman has taken his artistic skills all
over the world, his love of the Caribbean has always brought him back
home. Besides Key West and Fort Myers Beach, he has also called
the Cayman Islands and Jamaica home over the years. Whether it’s
on paper, canvas or wood, his art always has an island flair and it’s not
hard to understand why people really love his creations.
Norman’s custom tropical name paintings were the first of
his works that I saw when visiting Ft. Myers Beach years ago. Each
letter of the alphabet was originally created by Norman himself. The
paintings make great personalized gifts, which are very popular with
our visitors to the beach. Norman’s use of vibrant colors make all of his
paintings pop off the canvas. Recently he decided to use surfboards as
his canvas. Rather than buying the surfboards to paint, Norman actually
shapes the pieces of wood himself, making every surfboard project an
original. These handcrafted surfboards are what make JR Norman a

true artisan, but it’s not the only thing. In addition to making his own
surfboards, he also designs and creates his own brushes. These unique
brushes are what give his works their unique look.
Influenced by beautiful sunsets, sandy beaches and palm
trees, his work has developed a unique style recognized by many
worldwide. His works are privately collected around the world, and are
rapidly becoming more popular. The popularity of his art has encouraged
him to create a website that makes it very easy for his fans to view or
purchase his creations.

GENERAL COMMENTS:
From the Roman festival of Hilaria, to the Holi festival of India, and
the Medieval Feast of Fools, April has been known for centuries as
the month of ‘April Fools’. Though the practical jokes and hoaxes are
played on hapless victims, little attention has been placed on the secret
Cult of Pranksters who surface in April to wreak havoc on the sanity
of their clueless victims. Insidious, right? Yet some say they tenuously
hold the fabric of the universe together like glue. The more jokes, the
tighter the bond. Be alert! You could be next!
ARIES (March 21 - April 19)
We all know what happens when a butterfly flaps its wings in Asia (see,
‘The Butterfly Effect’ - no, not the movie, the definition). Anyway, down
here on the island the locals refer to this as the Damned Mosquito Effect.
Philosophers like everything all fluffy so they use butterflies. Locals ain’t
the fluffy type. We call it like we see it: the Damned Mosquito Effect.
The smacking of the hand on a mosquito is much more satisfying than
the flap of a butterfly wing. This is the month to smack some skeeters.
TAURUS (April 20 - May 20)
The color blue is going to be extremely influential on your life’s journey
this month. Every time you actively notice the color blue a bird will sing a
song near you. If you are not distracted you will find great wisdom in the
songs of birds. At least that’s what I hear animal totems are supposed
to do for you. One thing, though - ignore the grackles. They’re just
annoying.
GEMINI (May 21 - June 21)
This month will come on like a game of billiards, and go out like a game
of pool. In other words, at first you feel like you’re just knocking the balls
around the table, but eventually you’ll find the pockets and clear the
table. And remember, your glass may be half empty, or half full, but at
least you’ve got a glass! For some reason green is a predominant color
for you this month.
CANCER (June 22 - July 22)
Every 24 hours the earth spins a full turn on its axis. We’ve at least
advanced beyond the primitive concept that the sun rises and sets. We
realize the world is really just spinning around, all wobbly-like. If you
stand in one place long enough all you have to do is turn around to
see the sun again. This phenomenon will come in handy this month.
By standing in one spot, unmoving except to turn around to face the
sun, you can stop your personal timeline. Everything else will just move
along while you stay in one place. It could work … really!
LEO (July 23 - Aug. 22)
Bongo riffs are going to pass through your life this month. The snappy
rhythms will add zest to your life every time you hear them. Could be
during Happy Hour, could be while you’re out on a pub crawl, or on
a romantic date (the best). You’ll be rolling along, all chit-chatty and
everything, and you’ll hear the bongos. First you’ll tap your fingers.
Then you’re foot will start tapping. Next thing you know you’ll be in full
beatnik mode having the time of your life. At this point close your eyes
halfway and snap your fingers. You’re in the groove!
VIRGO (Aug 23 - Sept 22)
If space really is the final frontier, and every time we open our eyes
we see space, the same space that the astronauts on Mars look at
(hey, ask Matt Damon if you don’t believe me) … well, that must mean
that this month your astronaut training has officially begun. Start looking
at the stars and planets as signposts, like I-75 or Rt. 41, and please
figure out where we are in the galaxy. Spaceship Earth (as Bucky Fuller
calls this place) has been on autopilot too long. Virgos are destined to
become the pilots.
LIBRA (Sept 23 - Oct 23)
Librans love fractals. You didn’t know that, did you? Of course not fractals are weird. You don’t do weird … or do you? Fractals are a neverending pattern with duplicating patterns across multiple dynamics,
broken up - fractured - by random apparent chaos. Librans are always
looking for balance, equity, union. Probably why you’re such neatniks.
You see a fractal and you’ve got to find the unifying factors to activate.
Could be why unpredictable weather patterns drive you crazy. Try to
chill this month.
SCORPIO (Oct 24 - Nov 21)
This is a great month for you to pay attention to the music in your life.
Subliminal messaging is a powerful thing, and song lyrics are the most
influential. Think about it - what’s one of the most requested songs in
beach bars? “Margaritaville!” What’s one of the most popular bar drinks?
You got it! Where do you go when you hear “Dark Side of the Moon?”
How about “Crazy?” Know what I mean. Music tames the savage beast.
This is the Love Month. Definitely NOT a Justin Bieber month!
SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22 - Dec 21)
Macro fungi will insidiously slip into your life this month. It will creep
into your food, your meals, your salads, even! Usually this is of no big
concern as long as you control your intake. Just stay clear of any macro
fungi growing in cow pastures. These are only slated for use by Hopi
medicine men and certain retro-hippies living in the SW desert. Those
of you with a more civilized palate should only get yours from fresh food
markets.
CAPRICORN (Dec 22 - Jan 19)
The full moon near the end of the month will act as a magnet for you
as you go through life this month. This does not mean you’ll turn into
a lunatic by Earth Day’s Full Moon, but that each day will act like a
slingshot hurling you into the purity of the full face of the moon shining
down on you. This will be when your super powers will be strongest.
You don’t think you have super powers? Not true! You have a chance
to find and hone your power this month. Well, unless it’s cloudy on the
22nd.
AQUARIUS (Jan 20 - Feb 18)
Time to get rid of your old sneakers. Some of you are gonna have a real
problem with this but you’ve gotta do it. Sure, Governor Chiles walked
1,003-miles from Pensacola to Key West in the early 70s, but those
weren’t sneakers. Connie Mack III knew this when he succeeded him in
the Senate. What this has to do with anything … I don’t know.
PISCES (February 19 - March 20)
You guys are like two fish swimming into each other. One’s half full of
minnows, the other half empty of minnows. Kind of like the adage about
the glass with water in it. Half full - half empty. Worrying about which
it is. Reminds me of the middle class - arguing over which half you’ve
got. Hey, what about giving me a full glass to play with? Or, if you’re
a fisherman, catch both fish and make a stew! You want it all and you
deserve it!

educational programs in the Preserve for
adults and students.
The Preserve is located at 199 Bay
Road, behind the Historic Cottage and Beach
Elementary School. (Turn just south of the
Beach Library) The Historic Cottage houses a
collection of artifacts, photos and memorabilia
of life on Estero Island and is open on
Wednesday and Saturday from 10am to noon.
Park Concessions offer kayak tours
as well as bike, canoe, paddleboard and kayak
rentals. Call 239-765-7788 for concession
info. Geocachers will find six caches hidden in
the park. Free Ranger programs are offered
throughout the month. Birding, sea turtles,
fishing, wading and estuary tours are a few
examples. Call 239-463-4588 for ranger
program information.
LOVERS KEY STATE PARK
NEWTON PARK
Lovers Key State Park, just south of
Fort Myers Beach, offers a variety of activities
for visitors. The park is made up of four barrier
islands. A two-mile long beach, accessible by
tram or boardwalk is popular for shelling and
swimming. Black Island has over 5 miles of
multi-use trails for biking and hiking. A haven
for wildlife, the islands and their waters are
home to West Indian manatees, bottlenose
dolphins, roseate spoonbills, marsh rabbits
and bald eagles.
In the early 1900s the islands were
accessible only by boat. It was said that only
lovers made the effort to get to this romantic
island, thus the name Lovers Key. A road to
the island was built in 1965. Local legend
hints that Black Island got its name from Black
Augustus, a pirate who had been captured by
authorities, and later escaped, making this
island his home for the remainder of his life.
Fish camps were located on Black Island from
the early 1900s until the late 1950s. Then, in
the 1960s and 1970s, the four barrier islands
were slated for development. Preparations for
development damaged the islands. Mangrove
swamps were altered to uplands by dredging a
canal through Black Island. In 1983, the state
acquired the islands and in 1996, merged
with adjacent Carl E. Johnson County Park
to become Lovers Key Carl E. Johnson State
Park.
Visitors often wonder about the
unassuming beach cottage located mid-island
near Publix. Offering a tiki hut, picnic tables,
restrooms, parking and the Newton home,
Seven Seas, Newton Park is a favorite with
residents and visitors.
Island resident Jim Newton wrote
“Uncommon Friends” a book detailing his
personal relationships with some key figures
of the twentieth century including Thomas
Edison, Henry Ford, Harvey Firestone and
Charles Lindbergh. The Lindbergh’s frequently
visited Newton’s beachfront home, “Seven
Seas” on Fort Myers Beach. Ellie Newton also
penned two books at Seven Seas.
In 2003, the Town of Fort Myers
Beach obtained a grant, which, combined
with Tourist Development Council and Town
park impact fees have helped to develop the
property into a passive park and community
gathering spot for all to enjoy.
Each Tuesday morning at 9am, a
free guided beach walk is offered at Newton
Park exploring the natural treasures that wash
ashore on Estero Island beaches.
The Seven Seas beach cottage
once held large tea parties that the Newton’s
would host. Islanders can now host their own
parties at Seven Seas by renting it for private

MOUND HOUSE
Mound House is Estero Island’s
oldest standing structure and sits on an ancient
Calusa Indian Mound along Estero Bay. 2,000
years of island life are revealed in tours and
educational programs at the Mound House.
Situated on Estero Bay, the site is
accessible by boat and motor traffic and visitors
are encouraged to picnic on the park grounds
and enjoy the beautiful view. Overflow parking
is available at the Beach Baptist Church at the
corner of Estero Blvd and Connecticut St.
After years of hard work by hundreds
of volunteers and dedication from the Town of
Fort Myers Beach, the William H. Case House
was finally restored to its 1921 grandeur late
last year and the new museum and museum
store opened just in time for Christmas.
Now there is much to see and do
at this historic property. Stroll the pet-friendly
grounds with its native landscaping, visit the
observation pier, watch kayaks launch to
enjoy the Calusa Blueway Kayak Trail, gaze
at the back bay imagining the view filled with
Calusa canoes filled with shells. Join the fun
by participating in a Guided Eco Kayak Tour,
offered every Tuesday and on the first and third
Saturdays. Access to the grounds is free. For
a small entry fee, visitors can tour the Mound
House Museum and Shell Mound Exhibit.
Once in the museum, be sure
to take a leisurely trip back in time via the
amazing collection of historical photographs in
the second floor Digging Deeper Exploration
Gallery display. In addition to the photographs,
there are several hands-on exhibits that kids
of all ages will enjoy. Or stop by the Cuban
Rancho area that gives visitors an idea of
what life was like for the Cuban fisherman
who would travel to the area for months at
a time to fish. Calusa artifacts and tools are
on display along with panels explaining the
Calusa culture. The Period Room on the first
floor offers a look at what the house looked
like in 1909. The unique Shell Mound Exhibit
next to the house offers a cut-away view of
the mound itself detailing the age and history
of the mound. Visitors should allow at least a
couple hours to fully explore all there is to see
in the museum.
There are also a variety of new
‘specialty tours’ taking place on Tuesdays. In
April, these include “History Meets Biology
on Apr. 5th; ‘Shells of our Shores’ on Apr. 12;
‘History of the Mound House’ on Apr. 19th; and
‘People of the Mound House’ on Apr. 16. Also
be sure and check out the ‘Caloosa Carvers’,
who will be on site on Apr. 5th and 19th giving
demonstrations of their incredible craft.
Tickets to the Mound House
museum are $10 for ages 13 and up; $8 for
students with a college ID; $5 for ages 6-12,
with ages 5 and under free. Tickets for Fort
Myers Beach residents are 50% off with proof
of residence (license, utility or tax bill). From
January 1-April 30 the museum will be open
Tuesday-Saturday from 9am-4pm. After May
1, it will be open Tuesday, Wednesday and
Saturday from 9am-4pm.

Street - though a new parking area is under
construction at 216 Connecticut. Shuttle
