This wonderful breakfast staple has been a controversial topic for many decades. Are eggs healthy or are they the primary culprit in raising cholesterol levels and clogging arteries? Good news! Eggs, in so many ways, are in fact a very healthy addition to your diet! The whites are an ‘eggs’cellent source of protein – as a matter of fact – they are the ‘gold standard’ of all protein sources. The yolks contain most of the nutrition and are rich in lutein and zeaxanthin – two crucial nutrients responsible for prevention of macular degeneration (an eye condition common in the elderly). Other ‘eggs’cellent nutrients include the allimportant Vitamin D as well as Vitamin B12, choline, selenium, phosphorus and riboflavin. Eggs contain all nine essential amino acids. They are inexpensive (about 20 cents per egg) and low calorie (~ 80 calories per large egg) and very low in saturated fat (a known artery-clogging fat). 4 What ‘eggs’actly is the buzz about cholesterol? Up until last year, the recommendation was to eat foods low in cholesterol to prevent heart attacks and strokes. Now, the Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2015 have removed dietary cholesterol restrictions. This gives Americans the green light to eat eggs guilt-free! 95% of the cholesterol in our bodies is manufactured by the liver. Only 5% of our blood cholesterol comes from dietary sources. In fact, the primary dietary sources that raise cholesterol are saturated fat and trans fat – not cholesterol. Enjoy eggs anytime of the day. They’re an obvious part of a balanced breakfast – that provide sustainable energy. Add hardboiled eggs to your salad or have one as a snack. Or Enjoy the following healthy spin on an egg-salad sandwich… Egg Salad Sandwich: Ingredients: hard-boiled egg(s), plain Greek yogurt, spices, vegetables (pickles, celery, onion), bread (100% whole grain, pita, flatbread) Blend eggs with plain Greek yogurt (in place of mayonnaise) – add vegetables and spices (paprika, pepper) – spread on favorite bread. ‘Eggs’cellent Choice for Health!!!! July 2016 Social Security Questions and Answers Question: Is age 65 still important for Social Security retirement? Answer: While age 65 is important as the starting age for Medicare, it has no special meaning for Social Security retirement anymore. Until the Social Security Amendments of 1983, retirement benefits for all birth years were not reduced if you waited until age 65 before starting them. Benefits started when younger than age 65 were reduced for age. The 1983 Amendments put into place a very gradual increase to full retirement age (FRA) that is not yet completed. Since then, FRA varies based on your year of birth and is age 66 for birth years 1943 to 1954. Still, based on the 1983 Amendments, full retirement age will eventually be age 67 for those born in 1960 or later. Today, retirement benefits started at age 65 are reduced because it is younger than FRA. Learn your own FRA and estimate retirement amounts in the Social Security Retirement Planner at www.ssa.gov/ planners/retire/.
