We understand overweight children because we once were overweight children. Our camp is owned and operated by a former Kingsmont camper and staffed by former campers who have been inspired to certify in or study nutrition, weight management and physical education. Kingsmont campers receive knowledge and support from people who understand and care about the physical and emotional needs of being overweight. Camp Kingsmont is dedicated to fostering a healthy environment in which every member of the Kingsmont family is encouraged to achieve their full potential. For over 35 years, the Kingsmont family has operated on a few basic principals: eating healthy, being active, and having fun. goals We support and guide each of our campers in the personal development of a new self-respect and dignity. The core of our program is grounded in the healthy standards we have set for ourselves and our campers to guide each individual towards: • Setting realistic goals • A positive self-image • Effective decision-making skills • Self-expression • Leadership skills “Sometimes you have to let the ice cream truck pass you by.” 2 -Marc Manoli teenagers After 35 years of helping kids, Camp Kingsmont has become more than just a summer camp; we are a family. What I like about Kingsmont: I enjoy the family community and fun activities. 10 After success story- Jade Attended Camp Kingsmont for two summers— (2004 and 2005) Well, my biggest success is having first attended Camp Kingsmont and is also, I believe, responsible for the rest of the success that I’ve had in the last year and a half. Losing 77 pounds is not only in itself great, but it made me so much more confident. This has had a huge impact on my life. The confidence booster from losing the weight gave me enough courage to join a lot more extra-curricular activities and also to run for and be elected class president for the 2004-2005 school year. Also, in the past year, my school average went up 10 percent. At my school’s end of the year gala, I was even nominated for the student of the year award. The most important thing that I learned from Camp Kingsmont is the advantages of being healthy. Camp gave me the tools to lose weight, be healthy and, most importantly, stay healthy. I like the fact that everyone there understands you and that nearly everyone knows how you feel because they went through the same phases as you. By attending Kingsmont, I think campers receive the help they need in order to solve their weight problems. They will also meet and become friends with people that understand them and deeply care about their well-being. staff Great staff is here to help you succeed. With skill, commitment and enthusiasm, our wonderful staff provides true care. In addition to the former Kingsmont campers, we hire many staff certified in or studying nutrition, exercise science, physical education, psychology and personal training, to name a few. These staff members are pursuing careers in fitness or education and are eager to help kids. A formal pre-camp training for staff, plus weekly in-house sessions prepare and maintain our staff in understanding fully how to best help today’s youth in the camp atmosphere. All staff are subjected to full criminal background checks. Your child thrives in this supportive environment, gaining strength and inner resolve for the rest of their life. owner bio Marc Manoli completed a B.A. in Psychology from Boston College, a degree that complimented the lessons he learned throughout his early involvement with Camp Kingsmont. Driven by his strong desire to understand cultures, Marc has traveled extensively in Europe, Africa, South and Central America, Australia, and the United States. For two years he lived on the Pine Ridge Reservation of South Dakota as a volunteer working within the Lakota community. For twenty-five years he enjoyed a close relationship with the founder of Camp Kingsmont, Lloyd “Doc” Appleton, Ph.D. Years before obesity became an epidemic, Doc predicted the need for a physical fitness program for overweight children and founded Kingsmont in 1971. As a former U.S. Olympic Medalist and professor of Physical Education at West Point, Doc passed his extensive knowledge of children’s fitness to Marc, who continues to spread this wisdom to generations of campers as they confront their weight-loss struggles. Marc understands what you and your child are going through. The Camp Kingsmont experience is a foundation of his life. After first attending camp in 1975, Marc went on to become a counselor and eventually director in 1996. Camp Kingsmont is one of the oldest fitness camps in America and, of those, the only one operated by a former camper. Marc continues to carry on the tradition of this unique camp experience rooted in fitness and weight-loss. His personal motto is: “If it isn’t fun, why do it?” He brings this attitude into every summer for all to experience. 11 See You This Summer! 87 Easy travel from NYC, Boston and Montreal.
