McDonell Area Catholic Schools are committed to the formation of community, academic excellence and the spiritual and physical well-being of each student in the Spirit of Jesus Christ. Through their presentation that was given to all staff and representation of commission members and parents, the team recommended that our system, including our Early Childhood programs, be accredited. The areas the team was very impressed by included: 1. The cohort professional development model/Saint Mary’s partnership. 2. The expansion of the MACS Early Childhood program. 3. Each school and the system is very much a part of the wider community and is supported by this community. 4. The Student Ambassador program for grades 7-12 is exemplar. The team leader, John Fanelli former Assistant Superintendent of the Diocese of Patterson, New Jersey, recommended that we share our cohort model and the ambassador program on a national level. The accreditation process is such that it finds evidence indicating areas which need to be strengthened if we want to be a system of excellence. The next two years of improvement include: 1. The systematic review, revision, and communication of the mission, vision, and core values to all stakeholders. 2. The research, design and implementation of a system-wide supervision and evaluation process on improving professional practices. 3. Mentoring, coaching, and induction programs for teachers new to MACS. Central Office Summer Hours 4. Second Cohort of the Master’s program prepares to graduate On April 20th, three MACS teachers (BB4C Jaynee Brannen, high School Mitch Jacobson and middle-elementary Eric Wedemeyer) presented to parents, co-workers, supporters and the University of St. Mary’s leaders on what they have learned in their pursuit of a masters degree. They have implemented this new knowledge in the classroom and shared some of their results. Congratulations to the MACS teachers! Thank you to St. Mary’s University and supporters for your partnership with this program. Mrs. Mary Huffcutt Advancement News Jenny Schafer, Director of Advancement 715.723.0538 ext. 3306 or j.schafer@macs.k12.wi.us New work from home volunteer opportunity! Mrs. Jenny Schafer As you may or may not realize, one third of our annual revenue comes from “third source” funding. This includes donations from alumni, parents and staff, fundraisers (Scrip and special events), sporting events, childcare and grants. These sources represent a significant part of our budget and are critical to our efforts to keep tuition affordable. One of the reasons we have implemented a more comprehensive tracking program for volunteer hours this year is to help with our grant writing process. Many grants look for information on how many hours our supporters give to our mission. Volunteer hours make a difference! There are SO MANY organizations, businesses and foundations out there who want to give money away! I am looking for help searching for grants. If you are comfortable with the internet and are willing to spend some time surfing for grant opportunities for us, please give me a call. You would not have to help us write for the grant, we just need help finding them. Typical grants range anywhere from $1,000 to $250,000! Please consider helping out – you could find a grant that might result in thousands of dollars for MACS! How cool would that be? Please contact me in the MACS Central Office as soon as possible if you are interested in helping out. I will give you all the details and training to search for grants. McDonell Area Catholic Schools Congratulations to our teachers for their hard work in earning their Masters in Education. Pictured above are Eric Wedemeyer, Jaynee Brannen, and Mitch Jacobson. Thanks for a great school year! The Chippewa Area Mentor Program is ending the year with 221 students matched with a mentor! When you serve as a mentor, you enrich your own life as much as you do the life of a child. Mentoring leads to new experiences, connections, insights, and satisfaction. To those of you who serve as a mentor, THANK YOU for taking time to play a game or offer a listening ear. Your show of compassion has helped a child feel cared about, important, and believed in. If you are not a mentor and are interested in learning more about this life-changing experience, please call or email Ashley. 715-726-2400 ext. 2516 camp@chipfalls.org We are taking applications for the 2016-17 school year as we already have students waiting! 2 Family Newsletter May 2016 MACS Organizations Home and School Association (HandS) www.macs.k12.wi.us Notre Dame Athletic Association (NDAA) email: macshomeschool@macs.k12.wi.us web link: www.macs.k12.wi.us/hns.html email: ndaaboosters@macs.k12.wi.us web link: www.macs.k12.wi.us/ndaa.html The Home and School Committee has completed and placed the order for the third annual Little MACS yearbook for BB4C, SC and HG students!! A third grade girl (above) smiles as she finishes constructing her three dimensional pyramid. Working with 3-D math models Mrs. Eckwright’s third grade class constructed geometric solids from marshmallows and toothpicks to determine the number of corners, edges and sides. It was an educational way to get into a sticky situation! As third grade student Alan Meinen happily proclaimed, “Math never tasted so delicious!” A team of fifth grade boys proudly hold up their prize (above). As a Fun Friday activity, boys and girls from each homeroom went on an Easter egg hunt. The teams searched throughout the school to find the basket of eggs labeled with their group’s name (for example: Mrs. Kreider’s 5th grade boys). If they found a different group’s basket, they left it in place and kept looking for their own. It was an exciting finish to the week! “Do this in memory of Me”- Luke 22:19 A trio of girls from Miss Nowak’s first grade class use water color to paint chalices (left). This activity helped to explain the Triduum and to remember Holy Thursday and the Last Supper. McDonell Area Catholic Schools 7 Brick at Irvine Park During Catholic Schools Week, elementary school students could bring in pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters as part of different fun activities. Part of this money was donated to the Irvine Park Zoo and an engraved brick was placed in the zoo walkway. It reads: ST. CHARLES AND HOLY GHOST SCHOOLS K-5TH GRADE 2015-2016 Look for it this summer! Family Newsletter May 2016 St. Charles Borromeo Primary School | Holy Ghost Elementary School www.macs.k12.wi.us St. Charles first grade students delve into the world of commerce This young lady (above) counts up the yellow “Star Slips” she earned for showing positive behavior. Students stand in line at the bank (above) to trade in their yellow slips for larger denomination “money”. First grade students in Mrs. Yohnk's class have had many opportunities to learn about money. During calendar time, one student will count real coins in a variety of combinations while another student uses paper coins to keep track of how many days they have been in school. Students earn "Star Slips" throughout the day for desired positive behaviors and every morning they may go to the “bank" to trade their yellow slips for larger denominations of different colors. This speeds things up when they pay for their purchases at the "store" twice a month. This year the students had an extra bonus when a guest of the “Very Important Person of the Week” came in and talked about her job – working in a bank! “Safety First” is always a good rule The second grade boys and girls learned recently about safety and what to do in an emergency. They also were able to take a tour aboard an ambulance (see photos). Many thanks to our paramedic volunteers! In our Lenten Mite Box Collection this year, St. Charles boys and girls raised $360.00 and Holy Ghost students donated $255.00 for a total of $615.00 for our diocesan mission parish in Santa Cruz, Bolivia. Thank you for your generosity! McDonell Area Catholic Schools 8 Family Newsletter May 2016 St. Charles Borromeo Primary School | Holy Ghost Elementary School www.macs.k12.wi.us Holy Ghost staff and students honor Fr. Justin for earning doctorate Principal Mary Sue Briggs presents Fr. Justin with a certificate for earning his doctor of theology degree (above left). He finished the work in February. Fr. Justin answers questions from the students about the 800 page book he wrote over a 3 1/2 year period for his doctorate degree (above right). Fr. Justin (left) holds up one of his cakes (red velvet!) before it is cut and enjoyed by everyone at the celebration. The staff and students at Holy Ghost gathered recently to congratulate Fr. Justin Kizewski, pastor of Holy Ghost Parish, for receiving his doctor of theology degree. It is entitled, “God-Talk: The Patristic Patrimony of Medieval Analogy in Theology”. What is his thesis all about? As Father explains, “The doctorate is primarily about how we talk about God. It considers how people throughout the Church’s history have explained how they talk about God and how their explanations have influenced those who come after them. An enduring example in the tradition compares God’s talk to us and our talk to and about him to a mom’s Baby-talk to her infant. Just as the mom communicates in a way that conveys her love and elicits a response of love from her child, so God talks to us in a way that we understand and affords us an ability to talk to and about Him. This example is used by a Church Father named St. Gregory of Nyssa and gets repeated by St. Thomas Aquinas 900 years after him.” What a fascinating study of our connection to those before us by looking at how people talked about God throughout the centuries! A look at God’s world On April 20th, the Holy Ghost third grade students visited the Beaver Creek Reserve. It was a beautiful day to experience some spring miracles in the Wisconsin woods. The children participated in many hands-on activities to learn more about our state’s natural environment. They learned frog calls, how to identify birds, and how to look for signs of life in the forest. The boys and girls also went on hikes and played a predator/ prey game called "Owl and Mouse”. The last day to hand in your General Mills “Box Tops for Education” will be Friday, May 27th. Please keep sending them to school through that date. We earn money for our schools through this valuable program. Thank you for your help! These third graders (right) are playing an exciting game of “Owl and Mouse”.
