THE 85TH ANNUAL ACADEMY AWARDS
A
wards season is in full swing, and the most
prestigious awards show is on the horizon.
The 85th Academy Awards will take place
February 24 in Los Angeles. The nominees for Best
Picture include Amour, Argo, Beasts of the Southern
Wild, Django Unchained, Les Misérables, Life of Pi,
Lincoln, Silver Linings Playbook and Zero Dark Thirty.
Beasts of the Southern Wild and Quentin Tarantino’s
Django Unchained, both filmed in Louisiana, have had
major successes this past awards season, an encouraging
sign for the upcoming Oscars, and for the local Louisiana
crew who worked to bring both films to the big screen.
Along with the awards themselves, Shirley Bassey,
Adele, Norah Jones and Barbara Streisand will perform
during the show. Comedian Seth MacFarlane takes up
hosting duties this year. The creator and star of Family
Guy, he released his first feature-length directorial

DJ BABY YU
THE REMIX KID
by Katianna Bear
“I
t’s all about the food,” says DJ Baby Yu upon his return to New
Orleans. Back with Young Jeezy for their second performance
together in the Big Easy, the Canadian DJ did what he always
does after hopping off a plane here: he grabbed a poboy. It’s one of the
many things he craves when he has to leave NOLA cuisine behind.
International electronic artist Dj Baby Yu has created quite the
name for himself over the last few years, opening for Snoop Dogg,
Sean Paul and The Game, and hosting a podcast that now boasts
200,000 downloads a month. Although he did not intend to turn his
love for music into a career, spinning quickly became a full time job.
“[After starting with] college radio, all of a sudden I was on commercial
radio, then I was on XM radio, then I was the mix show coordinator
at one of the biggest stations in the U.S., V-103 with Big Tigger and
Ryan Cameron,” says Baby Yu. “ Now, I’m on six days a week and I’ve
traveled to over thirty countries. I just love music. I love making music.”
Unlike many DJs, Baby Yu’s mixes are myriad, emerging from
a wide range of influences. “Coming from Toronto, where it’s so
multicultural and diverse, helps,” says Baby Yu. “When you’re
around these people, they listen to so many different genres
of music, and when I’m around that, ideas just come to me.”
“I also still study music, and I always allow music to influence me. I’ll
be watching a random movie, whether it’s a girly movie to old school
Casanova. I’ll just listen to the soundtrack and get ideas that way. That’s
why I have mixes with John Mayer and Five for Fighting,” he laughs.
In March of last year, American hip-hop artist Young Jeezy noticed
Baby Yu after his exposure on Atlanta’s V-103 radio. “I met him 

probably seven or eight years ago when he first came out. Never
once in my life did I think, ‘I’m going to be your DJ one day,’” Baby
Yu laughs. “I’m just honored to be a part of his musical journey
‘cause it’s different. It’s totally different. The way we work, it just
clicks.” The unlikely duo recently came through New Orleans
for the Hustlaz Ambition tour at the UNO Lakefront Theatre.
With the success and exposure of touring with Young Jeezy,
Baby Yu still believes it’s important to stay down-to-earth and
positive. Part of this grounded attitude comes from his respect for
the work of other artists, like Jazzy Jeff, DJ Vice, A-trak and Diplo.
“What I admire most about guys like Vice and Jazzy Jeff is not just their
talent and business ethics, but also their attitudes. They are probably
the most humble people I know,” says Baby Yu, who says their positive
behavior directly influences him. “So many dirty things happen [in
the entertainment industry]. It’s hard to keep your head up. When you
have guys like that to look up to, it keeps me sane and it also keeps me in
check to always remember where I came from and why I’m doing this.”
Despite the success, Baby Yu admits that he “always wants
something better.” Once he reaches one plateau, he’s looking
to the next. “I really want to pursuit my dreams of being a
successful producer,” says Baby Yu. “If I can do that, and
continue to DJ around the world and do radio, I will be happy.”
