No matter, if you like disco or classic, blues or rock’n’roll, we have something for every music taste. Page 9 RICHARD HAYMAN Orlando’s Megaphone quickly graduated to the head of the class when they exploded onto the Central Florida scene in 2005. Performing headline shows at the annual Florida Music Fest and opening for such biggies as Ace Frehley, Everclear and Edwin McCain earned them a huge following. Page 35 After more than 50 years of outstanding success, the maestro came to Brevard County as the Principal Conductor and Music Director for the Space Coast Pops! With Mr. Hayman’s brilliant compositions, Brevard can look forward to another exiting season. 25 YEARS DEAD SERIOS This band is neither dead, nor serios! For years they have had their share of farewell and reunion concerts like no other. So what’s another anniversary concert? Really nothing, but it makes the fans happy. Page 37 Page 13 PAUL CHAPMAN & GATOR COUNTRY Matt Bretz has been “With The Band” before but this one was hard work and fun. Keeping up with rock legend Paul Chapman is difficult enough. Matt had to follow him around the Rib Fest in St. Pete... Page 17 RICK PIPER He has been pegged by some as a “surf artist,” but a closer look at his paintings discloses that he often produces dreamlike, surreal pieces that reflect a broader vision than produced in surf art. page 51 Columns Van Riper 20 Charles Political Satire 23 Calendars Live Entertainment Theatre, Concerts, Festivals, Arts Scene 34 Brevard What’s hot in Brevard 39 Out & About Meet the places and the people 44 Sex & The Beach Relationship Column by Matt Bretz Page 42 Brevard Live January 2010 - 7 8 - Brevard Live Janauary 2010 BREVARD LIVE UPCOMING CONCERTS The largest and most polular free entertainment magazine on the Space Coast and beyond for 18 years. Those bands were “The United Sounds”, “Blue Truth” and “Power”. That reputation would place him in the studio with the Allman Brothers Band for the recording of the Brothers & Sisters album. He played lead guitar on the wellknown song “Ramblin’ Man” and acoustic guitar on “Jessica”, co-authoring the latter with Dickey Betts. His next stops were as a guitarist for Boz Scaggs and The Steve Miller Band. Dudek was invited to play in a supergroup called Journey but he had received an offer to record for Columbia Records as a solo artist. His work was praised by the critics but widespread fame and success eluded him. He had two minor hits with “City Magic” and “Old Judge Jones” which were played frequently on local radio stations in the Los Angeles, California area, where he lived in the mid-1970s. He later collaborated with Cher, Stevie Nicks, and other Columbia Artists. - This is a free concert! D uring the late ‘70s, Eddie Money had a handful of album rock hits and wound up crossing over into the Top 40 with songs like “Baby Hold On” and “Maybe I’m a Fool.” During the early ‘80s, he began to make funny narrative videos, which became staples on early MTV and made “Shakin’” and “Think I’m in Love” hits. His career hit a slump during the mid-’80s as he struggled with drug addictions, but he made a comeback in 1986 with Can’t Hold Back. Featuring the hit duet with Ronnie Spector “Take Me Home Tonight,” as well as the Top 20 “I Wanna Go Back,” the album became a Top Ten smash, re-establishing Money as a successful blue-collar rocker. Money followed the album in 1988 with Nothing to Lose, which featured the Top Ten “Walk on Water.” Two years later, “Peace in Our Time,” taken from the 1989 Greatest Hits: Sound of Money, reached number 11. Eddie Money is a legend. There’s even a musical about him - Two Tickets To Paradise , an original play based on Eddie’s life story. It follows Eddie and his working class family on their journey as Eddie rebels against them in order to fulfill his dream of becoming a rock star. Brevard Live January 2010 - 9 10 - Brevard Live Janauary 2010 UPCOMING CONCERTS February 4 At The King Center, Melbourne F BB King & Buddy Guy or more than half a century, Riley B. King - better known as B.B. King, the King of Blues - has defined the blues for a worldwide audience. Since he started recording in the 1940s, he has released over fifty albums, many of them classics. He was born September 16, 1925, on a plantation in Itta Bena, Mississippi, near Indianola. In his youth, he played on street corners for dimes, and would sometimes play in as many as four towns a night. In 1947, he hitchhiked to Memphis, TN, to pursue his music career. B.B.’s first big break came in 1948 when he performed on Sonny Boy Williamson’s radio program on KWEM out of West Memphis. Soon after his number one hit, “Three O’Clock Blues,” B.B. began touring nationally. In 1956, B.B. and his band played an astonishing 342 one-night stands. At age 76, he is still light on his feet, singing and playing the blues with relentless passion. Time has no apparent effect on B.B., other than to make him more popular, more cherished, more relevant than ever. The other legend hails from the world of “Chicago Blues.” George “Buddy” Guy is a five-time Grammy Award-winning American blues guitarist and singer. Guy is known for his showmanship, playing his guitar with drumsticks, or strolling into the audience while playing solos. His music has influenced Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, Stevie Ray Vaughan, and many other guitarists February 18 At Sunrise Theater, Ft. Pierce R Robert Cray Band obert Cray has been internationally admired as a stylist whose innovations have brought new life to the blues. “Blues is one of the foundations of our music, but it’s not all that we play,” Cray says. “When I first started playing guitar, I wanted to be George Harrison – that is, until I heard Jimi Hendrix. After that, I wanted to be Albert Collins and Buddy Guy and B.B. King. And then there are singers like O.V. Wright and Bobby Blue Bland. It’s all mixed up in there.” He continues, “Every time somebody asks me about where my music comes from, I give them five or six different directions – a little rock, soul (oh yeah, definitely soul!), jazz, blues, a little gospel feel. Then there are some other things that maybe fall in there every once in a while, like a little Caribbean flavor or something. You just never know. I always attribute it to the music we grew up listening to, and the radio back in the ‘60s. It’s pretty wide open. It’s hard to put a tag on it.” - And that about sums it all up. Together on the bill with Robert Cray is a special guest from Europe, Ana Popovic. Her blend of smoking electric funk slide guitar, jazzy instrumentals, tight blues groove, soulful feminine vocals and her incredible stage presence makes her an irresistible force in the music world Brevard Live January 2010 - 11 12 - Brevard Live Janauary 2010 UPCOMING CONCERTS Space Coast Pops Presents Blues brothers Corky Siegel, Joel Silver, Jim Swall M Corky Siegel Solo ost people know Corky Siegel from the SiegelSchwall Band, a blues band from Chicago. The band was formed in 1964. Corky Siegel and Jim Schwall were both students at Roosevelt University, where Siegel studied saxophone music and Schwall studied guitar music. Schwall’s background was mostly in country music, while Siegel was more interested in blues. They combined these two genres, producing a lighter sounding blues as compared to Butterfield Blues Band or John Mayall. The band was the house band at Pepper’s Lounge on Chicago’s South Side. Every important Chicago blues musician sat in with Corky and Jim at Pepper’s, including Junior Wells, Buddy Guy, Billy Boy Arnold, Little Walter, Muddy Waters, Magic Sam, Otis Spann, Bo Diddley, Lazy Lester and Sam Lay, just to name a few. They toured the major rock palaces and clubs in the 60’s and 70’s until they broke up in 1974. In 1975 Siegel formed the Happy Year Band with Sam Lay, the late Albert Joseph on guitar and Rollo Radford on bass. Siegel later formed the ensemble Chamber Blues with a string quartet, tabla and harmonica/piano. This unusual group features Frank Donaldson, a 20-year veteran drummer with jazz icon Ramsey Lewis. Siegel continues to record, has earned several composing honors. Corky is currently on the road with his Traveling Chamber Blues Group in the Florid Panhandle, and since it’s been very cold in “Sweet Home Chicago” Corky and his wife Holly thought that this might be a good opportunity to visit their long-time friend Joel Silver in Cocoa Beach. And who could be more delighted than blues-philatropist Silver who’s been a fan since the 60’s following the band and slowly becoming a friend. As always, Joel opens his home and gives a helping hand to feature one of his famous blues brothers. Corky Siegel will perform solo at Heidi’s Jazz Club in Cocoa Beach on January 29th at 8 pm, and at the Sebastian Beach in Melbourne Beach on January 30th, 9 pm with the Josh Miller Trio. Richard Hayman America’s Favorite Pops Conductor R ichard Hayman, is an American legend as conductor, harmonica player, arranger, and composer. He’s also considered America’s favorite Pops conductor. After more than 50 years of outstanding success, the maestro came to Brevard County as the Principal Conductor and Music Director for the Space Coast Pops! With Mr. Hayman’s brilliant compositions, colorful attire, and outstanding guest artists, Brevard can look forward to another exiting season that takes the audience to the outer limits of the music world. The Space Coast Pops Orchestra presents “Down Memory Lane” for the first concert of its 24th Annual Season Subscription Series at 2:30 pm on Saturday, January 9th, 2010 at the Merritt Island First Baptist Church on SR 520 and Courtenay Parkway. Richard Hayman, the icon of arranging and directing POPS music, will conduct music for the concert theme of “Down Memory Lane.” Mr. Hayman was the chief arranger for the Boston Pops for over thirty years and will bring to you a program which features the types of music played. It will resemble his lifetime experience with POP music, culminating with his superior achievements with the harmonica. Featured performer will be Arcadian Broad, a pianist who, some years ago at age nine, won the Brevard Young Performing Artist Competition. He was also semi-finalist in the “America’s Got Talent” competition. Arcadian will perform the third movement of Mendelssohn’s “Piano Concerto”. • February 20, 2010 : “Big Band” Boston Pops style featuring Pops soloists. • March 20, 2010: “From Stage to IMAX” featuring Tommy “O” direct from Branson, MO. • April 17, 2010: “Tops of the Pops” featuring Carol Stein, Pianist. Brevard Live January 2010 - 13 14 - Brevard Live Janauary 2010 Brevard Live January 2010 - 15 16 - Brevard Live Janauary 2010 Florida Live I’m With the Band! Paul Chapman & Gator Country By Matthew Bretz “W hat kind of writer are you?”, asks the dark haired woman across the table from me. “Can you be a little more specific?”, I ask back. - “Are you a music writer or a journalist?”, she clarifies. “Are those my only choices?”, I say, beginning to realize I’ve somehow stumbled across a coiled snake. “Well, I don’t have a lot of respect for journalists you see.”, she replies, tightening her coil for the strike. Suddenly Welsh superman, Paul Chapman, steps into the line of fire to aid my escape. “Matty is actually both. He‘s a music writer AND a journalist.”, Paul’s charming accent nearly works in stopping the bullets, but another comes quick. “Oh…”, she says, dramatically pausing for the audience. “Then what kind of music do you write?” I have spent the entire day in the company of Paul, his band and his friends…including my attacker, and this is the first we’ve even spoken, so I can’t help but wonder why she is suddenly being so aggressive towards me. “Musical music?”, I ask/reply tentatively. “I’m going to find something to eat”, and with that the assault is over as abruptly as it started, no explanation. I ask Paul what just happened and all he can say is that it’s part of a long story that started years ago with a little band you might have heard of called “Bad Finger” and doesn’t really have anything to do with me. Confused and bewildered I decided to leave it be and catch another beer. “What kind of writer are you…that’s a good one, we’ll have to remember that one Matty!”, Paul muses. Photos by Kelly Quinn If you have watched VH1 lately, you might have come across some stories about hard rock and metal, the band UFO and the one name that always stands out - guitarist Paul Chapman is hailed as the metal-legend of the 70’s. I’m sitting by the pool of the Hilton in St.Petersburg Florida with Paul Chapman, Gator Country (formerly Molly Hatchet) and various members of their entourage, drinking beer, eating unusual British candy and getting the dirt on what it was like to be an “A” list rock star in the late 70’s. It’s a strange ending to a strange and wonderful day filled with legendary performers, VIP passes, mobs of people, stretched limos, heat stroke and the best ribs in the country. It’s Saturday afternoon in one of the prettiest cities in the state. Gator Country takes the stage at 2 pm and the fans are ready. Jet played yesterday and Zac Brown plays tomor- Brevard Live January 2010 - 17 Florida Live row, but today is where it’s at. Rib vendors have come from across the country to show their steel, and the air is thick with smoke and barbecue. Its gonna be fun so go check in at will-call for your backstage pass. If they ask why you need one show ‘em the rock horns and tell them…you’re with the band! The doors of the Hilton magically open, thanks to the sorcery of convenience technology, and I stroll into the lobby just in time to catch a ride with Paul and the boys to the venue. Paul shakes my hand and says “hello” with so much energy and puddle jumper charm I’m instantly a fan. Not five minutes later I’m carrying his guitars and following the group right back out of the lobby again to our limo. Let’s talk about this limo for a second. Somehow, someone, somewhere was able to take a full size Ford F-350 pick-up and stretch it into the biggest thing I’ve ever climbed into that didn’t sport wings and a jet engine. The interior is complete with neon lights, flashing lights, multi-colored tracing lights and shine in your eyes until you have seizures lights; a flat screen TV, a booming sound system, built in beer baths, a glittery acrylic stripper pole and some of the gaudiest black and red décor I’ve ever seen. The only thing this limo doesn’t come with is a good turning radius. All the way there we listen to a classic rock station and the boys take turns commenting about each song that plays and reminiscing about adventures they had with the corresponding bands. Rock stars… Our limo ride lasts about 10 minutes and, before I can get used to the Ozzy-meets-studio-54 environment I’ve 18 - Brevard Live Janauary 2010 been riding in, the doors are opened and we are backstage at the Annual St.Petersburg Exchange Club Rib Fest. There are at least a hundred rib vendors here…mmm, a traveling x-games stunt show, a mobile funeral museum(seriously), carnival rides and beer tents galore. When I was a kid I used to accompany my mother to Exchange Club meetings back home…there were about ten members and they met for lunch at the Rialto. These guys are at a completely different level. The guys have about 20 minutes before they go on and they adjourn to their RV/green room. There are about ten thousand people here now and they expect at least another five thousand before the day is through. While the guys are getting ready to rock the boat I take my opportunity to hit will-call and grab my “I’m cooler than you” badge. It takes longer than I expect and by the time I get back the guys are guitar strapped and ready to roll. A few steps up the backstairs, maybe twenty feet to the front of the stage and ten thousand people go wild. Gator Country is comprised of the original members of Molly Hatchet including Jimmy Farrar, Bruce Crump, Riff West and Duane Roland. Joining the mix are Steve Holland, Linne Disse and Paul Chapman of D.O.A., Ghost, Skidrow, Lone Star, Kimla Taz, Circus Circus, U.F.O. and the Paul Chapman Project. If the term “super group” just popped into your head…you’re not alone. On a wireless set up, Chapman starts riffing before he’s even onstage. The snare takes a hit and they’re off and running. I sit down on a crate stage left to enjoy the show. From my vantage point I can see everything. The band driving their amps and the crew running things behind the scenes to make sure the amps have power. Its all going like clock work…or so I thought. Suddenly things get a bit Spinal Tap. Bassist Riff West is nursing an elbow injury and can’t stand the pain for more than three songs. Off stage I ask what happened and he tells me he was hurt in a skydiving accident. I’m impressed for about 20 seconds before he comes clean and with a laugh and explains how he slipped while he was cutting his mother’s lawn. “should’ve stuck with the skydiving story”, I tell him. “Now I’ll have to print this.” He smiles and decides to grab a guitar and play rhythm for awhile. About halfway through the set I look down on the crate I’m sitting on and notice the Destroyers logo. It takes me half a moment to realize I’m sitting on George Thorogood’s guitars. I quickly change my location and turn back to the show just in time to see Duane Roland vomiting on the stage. The heat is really blaring down today and these guys are literally being cooked onstage. The stage is quickly Florida Live cleaned up, without much notice by the crowd, and Duane takes a seat offstage to recuperate. The next victim to go down is singer Jim Farrar. He almost makes it through the show, but in the end has to take a rest on the front of the drum riser. While all of this is happening the music continues and the guys are giving a great performance. I don’t find out until afterwards that the onstage sound was acting squirrelly and they couldn’t even hear themselves. Truly a testament to the professionalism of these seasoned performers. After a smattering of old Molly Hatchet hits and new Gator Country favorites the band winds to its last song of the show- “Long Tall Sally”, maybe their most famous song of all. The crowd goes nuts and with good reason…the boys kill it! Chapman has been slowly working his way through every member of the audience with his solos, making sure to melt each and everybody’s face as he goes. When it’s his turn again, he finishes the job…amazing. The band finishes, the crowd goes crazy and just for good measure…the drummer hits the last beat and falls over from…wait for it…heat stroke. Bruce Crump is rushed to the hospital and the roadies get the stage ready for Blue Oyster Cult. Rock Stars, Heat Strokes & BBQ Thirty minutes later Paul has traded his leather pants for shorts and his guitar, now safely away, has been replaced by an arm full of beer. Every time I finish one, he puts two more down. Blue Oyster Cult is just starting in on their third song- “Godzilla”. I’m a big fan of B.O.C., but not today. Today they are giving a less than stellar performance and I’m not the only one to notice. “Matty let’s get a picture together”, says Paul. “Ready? Look at the camera and say B.O.C. sucks today!” The band has other writers to talk to and I’m getting hungry, so I decide to check out the festival. Walking around, looking for the best ribs I can find, I can’t help notice that every single vendor has multiple trophies on display as well as huge banners declaring their ribs to indeed be the best. How am I possibly going to choose? The shortest line… that’s how. After about fifteen minutes and nearly twenty dollars I’m walking back to the artist area with a meal in a box, including coleslaw, baked beans and of course the “best ribs ever made.” I find a table backstage and sit down right next to twenty boxes of FREE ribs that have been provided for everyone while I was away. The food really is amazing and I’m so into my messy treat it takes me a minute to notice the absence of a certain ridiculous limousine. They left without me. Hailing a cab in St.Petersburg isn’t quite as hard as I thought it would be. Because of the festivities cabs are out in big numbers, and it isn’t long before I’m on my way back to the Hilton. Back in the lobby once again I immediately run into Paul and his wife. “Where did you go Matty?”, says Chapman. “We thought you left…sorry about that. Let’s go out by the pool and have a drink”. And so we do. Over the course of the evening Paul tells me stories from the road and I couldn’t be more enthralled. I hear about playing Soldier’s Field for 20,000 fans. I hear about touring with other huge bands from the era. I hear about what its like to hang with Clapton and jam with (Jeff) Beck. I hear about making loads of cash and spending it just as fast. I hear about weeks of not knowing what city you’re even playing in. I hear all of this and bask in my overwhelming jealousy. Someone asked Paul one time recently how, after such a wild rock n’ roll life, did he end up in Brevard County. He replied with the best answer one could have for such a question. He simply said, “I haven’t ended up anywhere yet.” After about an hour some of the party join us and talk about finding something to eat. Paul says he has a griddle in his room and he’s brought along steaks and shrimp to cook. Maybe I’ve had too much beer…did I hear that correctly? Did this rock star just say that when he came to St.Pete to play a huge show and stay in a really nice hotel, he also brought along his own do-it-yourself gourmet meal kit? Yes he did. Apparently, as well as guitar god and happy go lucky Welshman, Chapman can also add hobby chef to his resume. It’s getting late and I have a long drive home so I start saying my goodbyes and get ready to leave. I thank Paul and the boys for their hospitality and make my exit. It’s been a great day and I have a long time to relive it on the way home. I have a lot to think about, like…what kind of writer am I? Brevard Live January 2010 - 19 The Column By Chuck Van Riper It’s a New Year! (Maybe) H appy New Year! (As you may remember, 2 years ago I made a New Years resolution to never make a New Years resolution again, therefore, I have no resolutions for the forthcoming year.) Speaking of years, is it really 2010? Where are the flying cars and holographic TV’s we heard about in the 60’s? Well, we might have to wait a few more Vernal Equinoxes to find out. You see, the calendar we now use has only been in existence since 1582. That’s when Pope Gregory XIII implemented what is now known as the Gregorian calendar. Previously, the Julian calendar was most widely used. Both used the solar cycles to calculate dates rather than Lunar cycles.. The Julian calendar was adopted by Julius Caesar in the year we now think of as 46 B.C. Originally, Romans numbered years “ab urbe condita” or A.U.C. meaning “from the founding city” or the beginning of the Roman Empire. Then, the year 46 B.C. was actually 709 A.U.C. Following his conquest of Egypt in 48 B.C. Julius Caesar consulted the Alexandrian astronomer Sosigenes about calendar reform. They adopted the Alexandrian calendar which consisted of 12 solar months and 365 days with an extra day thrown in every four years. That year, they had to chunk in a few more days (67) so that the calendar coincided with the equinoxes. Just to confuse things a little more, Roman date keepers misunderstood Caesar’s instructions and put a leap year in every 3 years instead of 4. This went on from 48 B.C. to 8 A.D (56 years?!). In the middle of all this, Julius’s successor, Augustus, suspended leap year from 10 B.C. to 4 A.D. Another change was made by Augustus in the number of days in the months. He took a day from February (which at that time had 29) and added it to the month of “Augustus” making it equal to “Julius”. The use of “A.D.” was adopted in the year 527 (A.D.) by Abbot Dionysius Exiguus, who reckoned that Jesus was born in 754 A.U.C., so that would be the year 1. This time frame is considered to be off by a few years and any dating prior to the year 4 A.D. is probably inaccurate. These inaccuracies caused the loss of a few minutes here, a few days there, so now, the actual Julian date is off by 13 days (the Julian calendar caused a difference of about 11 minutes and 24 seconds per year compared to the actual solar year). In other words, what we consider 20 - Brevard Live Janauary 2010 to be January 14th is January 1st in Julian. Next time you are late for a class or a meeting, just say: “I’m sorry, my watch was set to the Julian calendar.” That’ll get you off the hook. This mayhem went on for a few centuries until Pope Gregory XIII came around and decided to adjust the calendar to once again align with the equinoxes. As stated above, because of the accumulated differences in actual solar years, every 131 years the equinoxes are off by 1 day. So Gregory, who had many solutions put before him, went with the system devised by Christopher Clavius. To accomplish this, they needed to ditch 10 days. So, the day after October 4, 1582 was declared October 15, 1582. From then on, a year was 365.2524 days. They also changed the leap year rule. In the Julian calendar, leap years were merely years divisible by 4. In the Gregorian method, it must be divisible by 4, but NOT by 100 but not by 400. (Whatever Chris was smoking when he figured that one out, I want some!). This is the system we use today to attempt to keep an accounting of the nebulous notion we think of as time. So is it really 2010? According to the Gregorian calendar, I guess it’s close enough. Will the world end on 12/21/2012? Well, according to the Julian calendar that’s actually 12/8/2012. How does that compare to the Mayan system of calculating time? That’s a whole new article! Anyway, hioe you all have a great New Year, whatever year it really is. Jazz legend Ira Sullivan calls her “a great young talent” with a big future in Jazz. Simone, now 25 years old, grew up in a family of musicians and started to sing, in her father’s band when she was 12. At the same time she studied piano, though singing remained her first love. Early on, she entered and won various talent contests and even made appearances on television in her native land, Austria. As a young performer, she twice toured the Netherlands with the “Euro Big Band” and later appeared in several International Jazz Festivals. Influenced by some of the great American vocalists, Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, and Jon Hendricks, Simone has developed into a true Jazzsinger, a singer who uses a wide variety of rhythms and excels in her very individual style of scatting. T here’s nothing like a fresh catch, but how do you know just how fresh this catch really is? It’s simple. You either catch it yourself, or you go to someone who is a serious fishmonger, someone who takes in (or is obsessed with) offering the freshest product around, someone like Crab E Bill Tiedge at Indian River Seafood Market in Sebastian. One of Bill’s first jobs was at Joe’s Stone Crab Restaurant in Miami Beach at age 16. This is where his passion grew for seafood in general and Stone Crab specifically. While still in his teens, he landed a position at Lorenzo’s Italian Market in North Miami Beach in the early 70’s. Working for and learning from the best butchers and fishmongers in Florida, Bill developed and succeeded in creating their famous Meat & Seafood Department. Years later, he went to work for Whole Foods Market. Bill had been offered by Johnson & Wales Cooking School, the position of instructor for the meat & seafood portion of class training. Instead, Bill became the Meat & Seafood “Team Leader” at the Aventura store for several years. He was then promoted to Meat & Seafood Coordinator for all of their Florida and North Carolina stores. The Indian River Seafood Market is located at the processing site for the most succulent farmed clams around, so Crab E Bill is able to give you the best prices and there is none as fresh and clean. Clams are started from seed, growing in troughs by the Indian River Lagoon. Daily visits are required to clean and rotate the clam seed until large enough to put into mesh bags. This process takes six months. After bagging the clams, they are spiked to the floor of the Indian River Lagoon to continue the growing process until they reach the desired size and succulent flavor. From seed to market takes approximately a year and a half. Once the desired size, the bags are pulled and taken to the processing site, then sorted into sizes and cleaned. That same day the clams are tagged and available for sale at Crab E Bill’s Indian River Seafood Market. Whether you choose littlenecks, top necks or pasta clams, you will find that no purging or cleaning is necessary after your purchase. Just shuck, grill or steam, and enjoy. Meet Melissa Tiedge (daughter), Carmine Leonetti, Bill and his wife Suzy Tiedge for the best seafood recipes and all the insider tips. There is a young buck named Ben Wilson around town these days. He’s a transplant from the deep south…which is actually north of us… and he’s got a pretty good new album. We are also going to take a look at a local group called Medicated Apple Pie that takes folk all the way back to the Village in the days of Dylan. Both have something to say, and both do it in their own special way. Let’s take a listen. Ben Wilson: Strange Dogs I was sitting in the artist area at Bonnaroo this last year in Tennessee. It had been a really long day and I was taking a breather in a lounge chair. A couple of workers came by and sat in the same area and we got to talking. After a couple minutes I realized I was talking to Ben’s sister… small world and all that. The first thing I notice about this CD is the excellent packaging. Its not something I typically review, but you guys should see some the stuff I get. This is not Ben’s first album and it shows in his professionalism from the onset. There is a picture of him on the back cover and he’s playing guitar on the edge of a Florida swamp in the reeds. Not being from Florida I wonder if Ben knows how dangerous that actually was...haha! Now the music… its pretty good. I can’t say there is a track I didn’t enjoy. Ben’s writing style is very Americana/ folk based. The jammy singer songwriter kind of stuff always strikes a sweet chord with me- especially if it’s good and this is. In truth there isn’t anything exceptionally difficult or groundbreaking on this album, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t have something valid to say. You don’t have to reinvent the wheel every time you pick up a guitar. The title track is about all the animals Ben and his wife have rescued over the years and I can relate…as can many of us in the dirty south. One of my favorites is track 10Elkton Trailer Park Blues. The name says it all really. It’s twelve bar in a quirky, fun style. All the players are tight and pro on this album. All the vocals are clear and precise. 34 - Brevard Live Janauary 2010 It’s a solid piece of work Ben…good work. Highlights for me were Elkton Trailer Park Blues, Strange Dogs and the picture on the back cover of Ben about to be attacked by an alligator. Medicated Apple Pie: Self Titled Talk about original! I put this CD in the player in my jeep and went for a ride. By the time I was on track 3 there was a distinct smell of patchouli coming from my speakers. By the time I was on track 4 I was zoning out so much I had to turn it off until I got home. Medicated Apple Pie is mainly comprised of Kelly Quinn on vocals and rhythm guitar and Sam Rece on lead. I hear little bits of other instruments here and there on the album, but I can’t tell if they multitracked and played those instruments themselves or if they had help. Semi beatnik style, you can tell the lyrics are taken straight from a poetry journal…probably written without a future melody in mind. The songs carry much of the same rhythm and structure, but with this kind of music its more about what the song says and how you feel about it…there is no lack of passion here. Rece’s lead work is great and has a slight percussive quality that helps carry the beat. I would like to have heard the lead come down in volume or simplify when the vocals were in play, but that’s just a matter of mixing. The style is what intrigues me so much about this CD. It’s nothing like I’ve heard around here before…at least not in this millennium. Quinn sounds like a mix of Sophie Sainte-Marie, Grace Slick and a sitar. At first listen its easy to zone out on the psychedelic atmosphere the music creates around you, but on your second and third listen you get caught up in the lyrics and the stories. This is a short CD, but something I will definitely listen to again. The recording sounds like it was done live in a coffee house…or maybe that’s just what my romantic view would like to believe. Highlights for me were track 3 for the mellow mood it put me in and track 5, which I understand they are considering redoing but I liked a lot. Florida Scene MEGAPHONE Chris Long is on the watch for new and original music. C hopping out catchy, well-crafted pop/rock ditties like irresistible lines of aural cocaine, Orlando’s Megaphone quickly graduated to the head of the class when they exploded onto the Central Florida scene in 2005. Performing headline shows at the annual Florida Music Fest and opening act slots for such biggies as Ace Frehley, Everclear and Edwin McCain earned the band a huge and loyal following while their debut record For Cryin’ Out Loud received critical acclaim and radio acceptance. By 2009 the pressure was on for guitarist Paul Smith, drummer Scott Smith, bassist James Woodrich and frontman/guitarist Matt Bloodwell to avoid the dreaded sophomore jinx and deliver a second record that measured up to their first. And they’ve accomplished that very objective with Exit Silent Mode. “We knew this one had to be done right,” Paul Smith recently told Brevard Live regarding the new record. “We took our time in the studio, experimented a little and we believe that we came out with something special.” And when they officially unveiled the new record last August at their House of Blues CD release party in Orlando, nearly 2,000 fans turned out to show their support -- setting a house record Kenny Dino Passed Away K for a hometown band. But the industry is called the music business for a reason and despite their high energy performances and onstage charisma what truly separates Megaphone from the rest of the pack is their penchant for creating incredible songs. And with their debut record filled with such infectious earworms as “Freak,” “Not Your Enemy” and “Drama Queen,” immediate comparisons were made between Megaphone and established chartbusters like Cheap Trick and platinum-selling songwriter/ producer Butch Walker. In fact, the band proudly credits Walker as a major influence. “No one is better than Butch Walker,” Smith commented. And featuring such sonic gems as “My Favorite New Disaster,” “Bad to Good” and “Gravitate,” Exit Silent Mode has fur- enny Dino had finished his second music gig of the day and was driving from Melbourne, Florida on I-95 to his home in Cocoa. He pulled over to the side of the road where construction workers found him unconscious. They called the Florida Highway Patrol and paramedics, but it was too late. Kenny died from a heart attack around 1 am, Thursday morning on December 10th, 2009. As a teenager, Kenny entered the music scene during the early days of Rock & Roll ther enhanced the band’s stellar songwriting reputation. Then, in November, Megaphone scored the gig of a lifetime when they opened for AC/DC at Orlando’s 20,000 seat Amway Arena. “It was really a dream come true,” remarked Smith of the band’s recent arena debut. “We didn’t win some contest or get people to vote for us,” he added. “We were selected because someone thought that we were the right fit for the gig.” However, 2009 has come and gone. 2010 is a new year and Megaphone has its goals set high. “We’re going to get started on record #3,” Smith added. “We want to be hugely successful as a great rock band and that’s exactly what we’re going to do.” www.megaphonemusic.net and soon signed a record deal with United Artist. He released several successful singles during this period, including his biggest hit, “Ma Said You Cried In Your Sleep Last Night”. This song was later covered by Led Zeppelin’s singer, Robert Plant, on his “Manic Nirvana” album. Kenny Dino had a big influence on many British rock stars who grew up during early Rock & Roll, such as Elton John, who says he keeps a Kenny Dino record on his jukebox at home. Brevard Live January 2010 - 35 36 - Brevard Live Janauary 2010 Brevard Scene DEAD SERIOS Melbourne Misfits Celebrate Silver Anniversary I t may be hard to imagine, but the outrageous, award-winning band Dead Serios has now officially been rocking the Space Coast for a quarter century. And just in time to celebrate their Silver Anniversary, the band returns to the stage this month with an all-night, multi-band music fest reminiscent of the scene they pioneered years ago. Billed as a “fiasco, twenty-five years in the making,” the Dead Serios bash will take place at Siggy’s in Palm Bay on Saturday, January 9th. The show kicks off at 7 pm with a solo acoustic performance by popu- lar area guitarist Stevie E. Rock. Also performing will be Brevard’s premier teenage combo The Ellers (8pm), roots rockers The Reactions (9pm), party powerhouse The Day After (10pm) and of course the guests of honor, Dead Serios (11pm). “We should have died years ago,” bassist Joe DelCorvo recently told Brevard Live. “But our fans just won’t let us go.” “We’ve been around so long that even the kids who used to come out to our all-ages shows in the ‘80s are now old, decrepit and divorced, just like us,” frontman D.L. Serios joked, regarding the band’s loyal, longtime following. “Many of those kids now bring their kids to our shows,” he added. “We survived long enough to become cool, uncool, and then cool again.” According to guitarist Doug E.G., fans should expect the most “ridiculous” show they’ve ever staged. “We’re playing ALL of our signature tunes and bringing in our full cast of onstage characters.” The band’s show at Siggy’s last January drew a sell-out crowd. It’s recommended to arrive early. Brevard Live January 2010 - 37 38 - Brevard Live Janauary 2010 Out & About Jumps Tiny Tavern in Cocoa Beach J This Friendly Local Bar Just Got More Charming umps Tiny Tavern was purchased in June of 2009 by Angel Murray & Stephen Allen. It used to be the “Home Plate,” a long standing landmark of Cocoa Beach with its share of history since built in 1958. Many locals and snow birds alike have memories & stories of this “Little Local Drinking Hole”. It is easily found off of A1A behind the ABC store on 201 Taft Ave. This “Tiny Tavern” still carries many of its original patrons from days gone by and new comers alike. It is a friendly place with a lot of personality! The new “Jumps” Tiny Tavern was named and dedicated after the owner’s father, Thomas Kaye, who passed away in March of 2009. He loved small little local hideaways and his comfort zone. He was also an avid music buff, biker, and life of the party that sang periodically with bands in central Florida. His nick name (Jumps) and spirit live on today in this tiny tavern inspired by good times, good friends, and good entertainment. This tiny tavern, serving beer, wine, & base line liquors, has been re-decorated inside, adding games and outdoor seating, live music, and focusing on the inspiration of “Jumps” with a southern rock flair! It boasts an Island theme and is truly a little local drinking hut. This young couple has put quite a spin on this local hangout. It is enjoyable to have an ice cold beer or drink there day or night. They have NFL ticket on Sundays with free lunch, they have drink specials every day of the week and two happy hours Mondays thru Fridays. Saturdays they hold horseshoe league games and host local music and entertainment periodically every month. They are planning to add more outdoor seating in this island tropical setting along with a tiki bar. “Jumps” Tiny Tavern is a local place that delivers no shortage of past stories, history and a vision of what it means to be in a “Cheers” atmosphere. This is a fantastic little hideaway for locals and visitors who are looking for that “at home” feeling. The Landmark Restaurant in Satellite Beach T Good Dining At The Cove raditionally known for live music, dancing and drinking, The Cove has “arrived” with excellent, topnotch lunch and dinner entrees. Walking through the front dining room and past a booth with dinners, the aroma of The Cove’s famous Burger, AKA The Best Burger on the Beach, was a rush to my senses! “Mmmm, smells delicious!” I was tempted to order a burger with steak fries, but opted to start with the Tuna Sashimi appetizer. Top grade sesame-encrusted, Yellow Fin Tuna, seared rare, to perfection, every bite melted in my mouth. They will cook it longer, at your request, if you prefer medium to well done. A delightful, light appetizer (large enough to share) served on a bed of seaweed salad with soy sauce, pickled ginger and homemade wasabi. The menu has a variety of many interesting selections to choose from, it was difficult to decide on an entree. Halfrack, “fall-off-the-bone” Baby Back Ribs were succulent, tender and, yes, I was licking my fingers - the barbecue sauce was that good! Served with two sides, I chose the fresh mixed vegetables, cooked in an exquisite white wine, butter, fresh garlic sauce and a huge baked potato. Other sides include Caesar salad, homemade Cole slaw, soup, rice pilaf or steak fries. Executive Chef Jayson uses only fresh ingredients to make the gravies, sauces, soups and seasonings from scratch. A variety of fresh soups are made daily, and the tomato based Manhattan clam chowder had a “zing,” and was loaded with clams. Specialty entrees include Seafood Alfredo and Lobster Ravioli with Vodka sauce, spinach and fresh tomato. Owner, Jerry Roberts along with General Manager, Karie and Manager, June are doing a great job, along with Chef Jayson, creating new daily dinner specials and providing nightly entertainment. January they are introducing for 2010, “10 meal selections for $10 each!” Next time you think about going to The Cove for music and dancing, think about dinner and dancing. You will be pleasantly surprised! When esteemed Cocoa Beach artist, Rick Piper, creates an image of a wave he represents the way it feels to him, creating a world that might not exist for others, but a vision with which many can identify. The refreshingly outspoken fellow is as free with his opinions as he is with his art. He understands that the way in which we perceive events determines our life’s experiences, and therefore our reality. Known for producing large paintings and using a vibrant color pallet, the frugal artist discovered early on that ACE Hardware acrylic latex house paint usually works just as well for him as more expensive paint produced for artists. He has been pegged by some as a “surf artist,” but attributes that to what he calls his “barrier island” phase, when he consistently painted ocean and river themes. A closer look at the astonishing number of paintings that he has generated discloses that he often produces dream-like, surreal pieces that reflect a broader vision than typically produced in surf art. Piper says that his art represents “Visual expressions of my life’s journey, the allegories and metaphors of my life.” It’s easy to see that his work, Tentative Step on to Water, depicts the influences behind his decision to become a fulltime artist. And that the huge painting that hangs in his gallery portraying the joy of bicycle riding on the dunes at night represents an unforgettable personal experience. He is a highly creative, prolific artist. It’s a rare day when he doesn’t pick up a paint brush. “I pretty much sell each piece as I do it,” he says. “The whole purpose of selling a painting is so you can go to the next painting. Some artists, I call it, ‘parent” their work. They won’t sell a piece until they can get what it’s worth. That stops them from becoming an artist.” Born in Florida, Piper cherishes the many opportuni- 42 - Brevard Live Janauary 2010 ties provided for him to broaden his knowledge and interests when his father, a fundamentalist minister, constantly moved the family to different areas so that he could start new churches. Although Piper’s daily routine is currently confined to a small Cocoa Beach area near where he lives, he says he “changes channels” by constantly generating new ways to express himself artistically. Recently, he and Colin Sanner collaborated on a stacked cut glass wave which is displayed in Piper’s “other gallery,” Juice ‘n Java, on Orlando Avenue. Piper is also experimenting with heat-sculpted clear acrylic and its effect on caustic light, an example of which hangs on the wall of his Big Art Studio located at 18 North Brevard Avenue, a block west of Juice ‘n Java. “Grow or die,” Piper says, explaining the pleasure he finds in growing older and wiser and improving at his chosen work. He encourages the timid by saying, “You even might reinvent yourself as you move around meeting other people and adjust to changes in your life.” The youngest of five children, as a child he drew obsessively, filling boxes with his sketches and drawings. The habit continued throughout his life. For many years he accepted his father’s counsel that “watching TV and making pictures” would not result in a decent paying job. But then along came computer-aided technology. One day Piper found himself at the Cape at McDonnell Douglas pocketing a five-figure salary, “watching TV and drawing,” and winning awards in computer graphic competitions sponsored by Intergraph Corporation, a leading software development corporation. A man matures considerably on the day that he discovers that his father is not infallible. Piper realized that he had invested half of his life without doing what he really wanted to do. He decided to try to make it as a professional artist. Trusted friends kept him going for almost three years until he could afford rent on an on an 8th Street apartment. During the day he used its parking lot on A1A. to display his huge paintings “You could see the parking lot for three blocks,” he said. “Thousand of people passed them every day. I probably sold 200 pieces, not for much, but it got me started.” Three years ago Piper won best of show and the purchase award at the Brevard Museum of Art. He rarely enters competitions and prefers to exhibit as a one-man show, especially when there is food and drink for the patrons. Two years ago, he remembers, such a show drew 800-900 people to Enigma in Satellite Beach. A few weeks ago his exhibit as a featured artist at the Highway Girls Gallery in the Eau Gallie Arts District “during a monsoon on First Friday” sold eight pieces despite an enormous drop in normal attendance. Additionally, he has an excellent web page where he keeps the public and his collectors up-to-date on his work. (www.rickpipersart.com) When the City of Cocoa Beach wants or needs him, he is there. His poster designs won the Space Coast Art Festival contests in 2004 and 2009. The Sunshine Artists’ Magazine, a national publication, selected his 2004 design, Barrier Beach, as the most creative poster in the country. This year’s design insured a second sell-out of posters and T-shirts. Piper made a lasting contribution to the beauty of his adopted city. He spent a year painting a 125-foot-long, 13-foothigh, mural, Ocean Garden, on the north side of the Juice ‘n Java café. He hopes the mural will be maintained as a city landmark. The beautiful scene incorporates trompe l’oeil elements and surreal features including a giant passion flower bloom and sky-borne fish. Brevard Live January 2010 - 43 SEX BEACH AND THE What Kind of Flake Do You Want to Be? By Matthew Bretz I n any relationship I’ve ever had…and that includes romantic or plutonic, I have always had one huge pet peeve I’ve never had much tolerance for. I hate, hate, hate when people flake on me! I was at a seminar in Kissimmee one time a few years ago and famed motivational speaker Zig Ziglar was one of the guests. He told us that, in his opinion, the rudest thing you can do to someone is waste their time by being late or not showing up at all. Its disrespectful in every way. Its like saying “your time is not nearly as important as my time.” Old Zig was right and to make my point a little clearer I’ve broken down the world of flakiness into easy to follow categories. Check it out. Snow Flakes Every once in awhile I meet a girl who is adorably artsy and sprite like cute. They dance around freely through life not thinking much about what they are doing or why, just falling in love with whatever they come across from moment to moment. I love these kind of people…but they typically don’t stick long before they find something new and exciting and move on. These girls are so attractive on so many ways because they represent the opposite of everything that stresses us out about life. They are care free and wild…not responsible and boring. The problem comes when you try to make plans or schedule anything at all with them. Half of the time something else 44 - Brevard Live Janauary 2010 Photo by Misti Blu Day will come along and they will cancel at the last minute…the other half of the time they will just forget and never show. These girls are fun for a brief period of time, but then without notice they are gone. Beautiful and refreshing…and then they melt away like a snow flake in Florida. Frosted Flakes Frosted Flakes are girls that do the thing adults always told you, you couldn’t do as a kid…get through life on your looks. These girls were probably always gorgeous and never had to develop a personality, or think about other people’s feelings very of- ten. When every guy they meet wants to take them out, it doesn’t mean much to stand a few up now and then. And if somebody gets upset…a little wiggle in the walk will fix it. The problem is that girls like this don’t ever feel the brunt of the other person’s disappointment when they flake because no guy in his right mind wants to be on the bad side of a hot girl. They never really learn to take other people’s feelings into account because everyone is so concerned with keeping them happy. These girls looks like magazine fantasies come alive, but don’t be fooled by their sweet, frosted coating. Underneath that candy like exterior lies the cold beating heart of serial flaker. Corn Flakes Have you eve dated someone that breaks plans or doesn’t return texts or messages and constantly gives you lame excuses about it? Every now and then I come across a girl who appears to really be as busy and unavailable as she claims, but for some reason every time we talk my gut screams at me that I’m being lied to. When this happens I’ll usually give them the benefit of the doubt for a short while, but if it keeps up or their stories start to not jive, I just cut it off. I don’t waste my time with liars. I think Zig would agree with me on this one. I think Corn Flakes are actually the worst of the bunch because they obviously know what they are doing is disrespectful, or they wouldn’t lie about it, but their selfishness overrides and they do it anyway. They may look and talk and walk like a healthy treat, but don’t be blinded by the nutritional name…these girls can’t help it and probably won’t ever change their ways. Sometimes you can’t help but break plans now and then, but if you do it because something “better” suddenly comes up, or because you’re playing a power game or even if you chronically forget because your priorities are elsewhere you are a bonified flake. For all you guys reading this, I hope it helps to know you’re not alone in your frustration. To all you girls reading this, you might want to check and see if you fall into any of these categories. If you do, you should know… WE HATE THAT!
