Let’s all welcome back the newsletter! Sorry for the long delay in getting a
newsletter out, but I am happy to say we have resolved this issue by
outsourcing the creation of the newsletter to Matty Moore. Matty Moore
works in Central Washington for a company producing newsletters for
non-profit organizations such as Ski NW Rockies, Chip Shots– a Golf
enewsletter, Golf in the NW and many more. She has been given guidance on
our newsletter “style” by John Arrabito and is ready to work for us to keep us
connected and help support our mission. We want to give a warm thanks to
John Arrabito for his years of service creating the newsletter. Without you
John we wouldn’t have known we were missing something all these months.
So THANK YOU!

The Selah School District’s shooting team,
made up of both High School and Middle School
students, has been supported by the WWA Yakima
Valley Chapter for three years now. They held their
big Saturday competition on Saturday, March 19.
Youth teams from around the state met in Selah at
the Pomona Gun Club. It was great to see so many
young people, positively involved in the shooting
sports! The YV WWA Chapter counts it as a great
privilege to be able to help out at this yearly event,
and to financially support this team.

years working to enhance hunting areas in the Skagit region.
Whether cleaning up hunting areas, meeting with local
politicians to educate them on the resources we enjoy or
being a member of the state Waterfowl Advisory Group
(WAG). Just to highlight some of his endeavors this past
year; he submitted/organized and complete an Aquatic Land

Skagit Wildlife Area. He also empties the shell containers at
Welts and HQ weekly throughout the season. The Chapter
presented Art with a Mojo stick to help with picking up shells,
we want to keep him working! Well done Art and THANK YOU
for everything that you do to keep our sport going!

or just want to learn a new skill. Northwest member Kurt
Benson is offering classes on decoy carving. For those of
you that don’t know what this is, you take a block of
wood/cork and turn it into a decoy. Kurt is a master and
can help even if you have troubles making a stick sharp.
He has all of the tools to help in this journey and will
work with you from square block to a painted killer. This
is great for kids because these decoys are unsinkable!

about half of those shells came from the ditch spoils from
this past summers work. It looked like the last 20 years of
shells that have floated in off the fields and tossed in by

Our chapter has had another year of success with our
nesting program. We are currently expanding it to south
Lewis county. I haven’t visited the four new nesting
platforms there since the egg laying season started so I don’t
have a report on them as of yet. The goose nesting platforms
we installed on Cedarville Farms properties last year had
another great hatch. Three out of four had a goose laying
with two hatches that we know about. The third has probably
hatched by now but I haven’t been there to check it out yet.
We plan to have another free “Youth Shooting
Event” this year and have scheduled it for September 10,
2016 (see page 18 for more information). For those of you
that haven’t been to one we set up blinds on the trap range
and give the kids shots simulating wing shooting. We have
ground blinds, a boat blind, layout blinds and a poison bird
target. It’s a 50 shot course. Then, we have a free BBQ lunch
that has been provided by the SW Chapter! After lunch we
give the kids shooting and hunting related prizes! All of this is
designed to promote safe, fun shooting and water fowling,
AND, it’s FREE for the kids under the age of 16! Adult are
encouraged to shoot the course and the entry fee for them
will be just $20.00 to offset the cost of targets. Military entry
is $10.00.

the 12 Annual Youth Mentor Shoot at our May 25 meeting.
The program is for first time or beginning youth age
16 and under and is designed to instill in the student (1) safe
firearm handling; (2) basic shotgun shooting skills; and (3)
having fun!
All participants will receive FREE in the order of importance:
- Firearm Safety Training;
- One-on-one individual shotgun instruction and
supervision for shooting a shotgun at clay targets;
- Shells, Range Fees, ear and eye protection; and use of a
fitted shotgun;
- A WWA-logo’d hat of their choice; and
- Dinner of Pizza and soda.
All participants must (1) be accompanied by parent/legal
guardian/adult. Check in begins at 4:00 p.m. All participants
MUST attend the “Firearm Safety Training” at 4:30 p.m., or
they will NOT be allowed to shoot!
Can you identify all of the species represented in
these decoy displays above and below?
We like to keep this event at 15 to 20 youth in order
to assure all Participants the one-on-one adult supervision.
Larry reports that they have 15 signed up so far, so there is
still room for a few participants despite the advertised May
16th deadline. Fill out the one page application on the

discount. [Have you priced lead weights for
fishing lately?]
We made them, but thanks to WWASW Chapter member, and current member
of the Corporation’s governing board, Terry
Satre, for showing the group how to
transport them with decoys attached without
getting them all tangled up!

Whatcom County Chapter News
By Mike Vandehey
On the weekend of October 24, volunteers Mike
Vandehey, Gabriel Ng and his son Dakota from the
Whatcom Chapter with WDFW Area Manager Richard
Kessler stood up and secured the "Leaning Blind" on
Lake Terrell. This blind fell over more than a year ago
due to the island under it washing away and undermining
the supports.
The team set new posts and stood the blind
upright in time for the lake to fill up with water for duck
season. Water should come up to the floor by
December. A ramp has been added since the photos
were taken.
Big thanks to WWA-Whatcom Chapter and
WDFW for supplying materials and to Gabe, Dakota,
Mike and Richard for supplying the 'sweat equity'.
