COMMUNITY WIDE GARAGE SALE
SATURDAY SEPT 15TH 7AM-1PM
Most Americans acknowledge the facts that regular
physical activity and healthy eating improve overall health
and reduce the risk for many chronic diseases. However,
statistics collected by the Center for Disease Control and
Prevention indicate that despite this knowledge, many fail
to integrate healthy lifestyle choices into their daily lives.
According to the CDC, there has been a dramatic increase
in obesity in the United States over the past 20 years. More
than one-third of U.S. adults (35.7%) and approximately
17% (or 12.5 million) of children and adolescents are obese.
In addition, less than half (48%) of all adults meet the 2008
Physical Activity Guidelines and less than 3 in 10 high school
students get at least 60 minutes of physical activity every day.
Statistics such as this will continue to be the norm unless
individuals make a commitment to health and wellness
for themselves and their loved ones. In an effort to help
our neighbors on their healthy lifestyle journey, a group of
RBC residents have come together to organize the first “Fit
Happens 5K Run/Walk” and Health & Wellness Expo. This
event will take place in the RBC neighborhood, starting at
Ranch Trails Park on September 22, 2012.
The Fit Happens 5K will begin at 9:00am (with registration
and bib pick-up starting at 8am) and be followed by a raffle
and Health & Wellness Expo in the park. Service providers
at the Expo will specialize in products that promote a healthy
lifestyle. The 5K is a non-competitive run/walk designed to
get the neighborhood out and moving! This event is for any
fitness level and age! Whether you plan to run, walk, push a
stroller or pull a wagon, recruit your family and neighbors
to participate in this event together and make FIT HAPPEN
in RBC!

As always, you are welcome to participate during whatever
hours are convenient for you but the community wide sale
itself will be advertised to take place during the hours listed
below. Individual Garage Sales are to be held on your own
driveways and you are responsible for placing and removing
your own signs within the neighborhood in a timely manner.
(Signs posted on Parmer before 5 pm on Friday, May 4th
run the risk of being picked up by the city.) The Social
Committee will place ads in local papers and signage outside
the main entrances.
If you have particular items of interest and want to place
ads of your own it is highly encouraged and may help draw
attention to our neighborhood.

month, and each member hosts the game at their own house once

Pet's Corner
Helping Educate Rescued Orphans

Sadly, Austin has a pet overpopulation problem. Many, many pets
and cats are dropped off at area shelters each day. Animal Control also
finds many stray pets/cats each day. The majority of these animals
are healthy with no behavioral issues. Their owners have a multitude
of reasons for surrendering their pets, including: moving, new baby,
health issues, financial issues, allergies.
Many organizations of loving volunteers, strive to give these pets/
cats a second chance by matching them with a new family that will
be thrilled to welcome them into their home. A foster-pet (or cat)
program is designed to buy time for shelter pets and to help them find
a perfect family. Organizations actively seek foster families to help.
You could become a foster-parent family and help connect orphaned
animals with families looking for companions. What does it take to
Help Educate Rescued Orphans, to be a HERO ?
Contact your preferred organization for exact details, but generally,
here’s how it works:
The foster family plays an important role in the process of rescuing
a pet and finding the perfect home. Foster families are trained to help
pets transition into a new environment and to assess the requirements
for each pet. Some pets need a lot of exercise, some families are very
active. Some pets like to just watch TV next to their owner; some
owners just want a pet to watch TV with. Foster families are key to
helping match adoptive families with the perfect pet.
Why would anyone open up his or her home to an unknown,
sometimes untrained pet? Because the rewards are amazing. Some
of the rewards of fostering include:
• Learning about a wide variety of pet breeds
• Being able to experience that “new pet” excitement – over and over
• Being able to have a young puppy/kitten in your home any time
you want
• Knowing that you have saved a pet’s life
• Watching your scared shelter pet turn into a happy, well-adjusted
pet that is ready for a new family
• Giving a family the joy of a new pet
• Making friends with other pet lovers
• Meeting a wide variety of people
• Learning from experienced trainers and rescue team members
Once a pet is pulled from a shelter by the Rescue Group, it is that
organization’s responsibility. They cannot and will not just take the
pet back to the shelter. Therefore, groups generally have substantial
requirements to become a foster family:
• Your foster pet must meet the same minimum medical requirements
we ask of our
adopters. Current on all vaccinations, must be spayed/neutered
and show consistency in receiving monthly heartworm preventative.
• Love and treat your foster like your own while it is in your home
• Provide housetraining, crate training (the group provides a crate
if needed), leash manners and indoor manners training

• Have your foster live indoors
• Provide a diet of good, nutritional, age appropriate food
• Have a safe, secure yard for your foster during its time outdoors
• Seek advice early and commit to work with your foster through any
behavioral issues (aggression towards humans, being the exception)
• Give monthly heartworm and flea protection which is provided
by group
• Provide transportation for your foster pet to one of the
organization’s approved veterinary clinics (cost covered by the group
with prior approval and arrangements), and attend adoption events
• Work with prospective adoptive families to help your foster pet
find a home
How does it work?
First, pets at the shelters are evaluated based on basic temperament
qualities. A group will look for pets that are friendly, outgoing,
good with other pets, kids, etc. They attempt to pull pets that have
reasonably good manners or puppies/kittens that can be quickly
taught manners.
After the pet is selected from the shelter, it receives full vetting;
including vaccinations, de-worming and heartworm test. Most pets,
other than young puppies/kittens, will be spayed or neutered before
being placed in their foster home.
What support do I get as a foster home?
Most organizations have an experienced team of pet-owners and
access to trainers who have likely worked in pet rescue for years.
Prior to receiving your first foster pet, you will be encouraged to
attend a Fostering Orientation class. As a foster caregiver, you and
your foster pet can attend any group pet training classes that are
appropriate for the age and skill level of your foster pet. Monthly
special topic training and get-togethers may be offered, depending
on the group, which will help you learn and keep you connected
with other foster families. First time fosters are normally provided
with much support. Fosters are invaluable to Rescue Groups, so they
want to help you with any issues that may arise, including covering
foster-pet related expenses.

What pets do groups intake?
Austin is fortunate to have many breed specific rescue groups that
are able to help many of the purebred pets in the shelters. Other
groups focus primarily mixed-breed pets and serve as a back-up for
breed specific rescues when they are out of space.
Some people like or are better equipped to handle certain types
of foster pets. When you decide to volunteer, be sure to indicate
your preference in size and age of the pets you would like to foster.
How do I begin?
Start by filling out the organization’s Foster Application, sometimes
found right online. Then, if you have a pet, the group will contact
your veterinarian to ensure the pets in your care currently receive
proper medical care. It is strongly recommended that your dog
receive a Bordatella vaccination prior to you bringing in a foster dog.
Sadly, Bordatella (kennel cough) is very common and many foster
dogs will have it or may have recently been exposed to it.
Next, usually a member of the rescue team will visit your home.
The purpose of this visit is to answer any questions and to learn more
about your level of pet experience. At this meeting, you will go over
our fostering guidelines and likely be asked to sign the organization’s
Foster Agreement.
If it is part of the group’s process, you will next be scheduled for
a Foster Orientation class.
The last step is helping in the selection of a foster pet. You are
encouraged to visit a local shelter with the rescue coordinator to
assist in selecting a pet.

the leaders of the rescue group and ask for help.

HELPFUL TIPS:
WHAT CONSTITUTES A PET EMERGENCY?
An emergency is any situation in which your animal’s life is in
danger. The following are specific examples of emergency situations.
• Illness – If your animal becomes severely ill, please seek help as
soon as possible. Indications of severe illness include lethargy, severe
vomiting and/or diarrhea, or signs that an animal is in pain.
• Trauma – If your animal sustains any kind of traumatic injury,
please seek help as soon as possible. If the injuries are severe, please
take your pet immediately to the nearest veterinarian.
• Loss – If your animal becomes lost, please seek help as soon as
possible and contact local animal control facilities.
