02|2013 THE HANOVERIAN No. 2 | February 2013 Annual Report Moving Moments Sport Burlington won Burgpokal Breeding Young stallions Jahresbericht Moving Moments The passed year 2012 reflects the dynamic changes that are taking place in the breeding of horses and in equestrian competitions. The fundamental attitude of the Hanoverian Association is to lay down the principles of this breed organization as broad as possible to be able to meet the changes and the imponderable of the market or better the economic conditions with the greatest possible flexibility. By Dr. Werner Schade T he new facilities of the Niedersachsenhalle in Verden have proven themselves after the completion of the building project and are much appreciated by all visitors. Now we must focus our energy and concentration on the challenge that 2 The Hanoverian 02|2013 captures the breeding of horses as well as the sport. The breeding of sport horses is consistently shrinking all over Europe. This shrinking process creates risks and problems but it also presents opportunities for the future. The decline in numbers Jahresbericht that has taken place during the past years is continuing within the Hanoverian Association. The total number of registered mares shows a decline of eight percent for the first time. The number of newly registered mares is seven percent below last year’s. The decrease in respect to the number of breedings was actually not as high as anticipated. In the end minus eight percent was determined. Nonetheless we must take a critical view at this figure as it indicates how many horses the Hanoverian Association will be able to offer for sale in the future. The decline in breedings adds up to a total of 37,5 percent over the past four years. The national decline is comparable. Now we are expecting the offspring from these breedings. We already noticed a decline in the number of young horses in 2012. This will decrease considerably in the coming years. As the sport horse breeds overall – also with other breed associations nationally and internationally – is experiencimg a similar decline the number of young horses available for the market will decline more and more in the coming years. Even though the present market is still suppressed the probability of a horse shortage for the future is high. We cannot make product adjustments quickly when breeding of horses like other business branches can. Breeding horses takes time. We must therefore put a stop to the declining number of breedings. In other words every broodmare of good quality needs to be bred. Stable show system The mare shows clearly demonstrated that our future-oriented breeders made their breeding decisions with quality in mind. In addition to the presentation of outstanding mares at a high overall level of quality it was very encouraging to witness the stability of Hanover’s show program. 1,539 mares were presented. This is almost exactly the same number of mares as last year (1,541). 846 mares The Hanoverian 02|2013 3 Annual Report Hanoverian Mare Performance Tests 1990 1995 2000 2005 2010 2011 2012 Field Tests Number of tests Tested mares 19 509 36 1.351 38 1.267 36 992 30 886 34 943 34 836 Station Tests Number of tests Tested mares 7 151 10 205 9 201 8 161 6 86 7 120 10 111 Total Number of tests Tested mares 26 660 46 1.556 47 1.468 44 1.153 36 982 43 1.063 44 947 27,7 58,2 57,5 46,25 40,08 42,88 41,10 %-share of tested/ newly registered mares received a Ia-award and 583 mares were awarded the State’s Premium Aspirant-status. I would like to mention the mare performance test. The number of participants decreased to below 1,000 mares. The cost of training must unfortunately be viewed as a limiting factor. Investing in the mare performance test is advantageous for many reasons though. The breeding club Lüneburg organized the Friedrich Jahncke-Show in 2012. The breeders of the area demonstrated and confirmed that the breeding in the area is on the right track. There is an excellent proven mare base in place in the older classes. Successful breeding club and regional mare shows allowed for high expectations for the Herwart von der Decken-Show in Verden where only the best three-year old Hanoverian mares are exhibited. One of this year’s highlights: the Royal Canadian Mounted Police visited Verden. Photo: Schwöbel This culmination of the breed was a demonstration of the athleticism of the future generation of broodmares. The quality of movement and the jumping ability greatly impressed both guest judges Scott Hassler from the United States and Elmar Pollmann-Schweckhorst. It became very apparent that performance was a vital part of the mares’ pedigrees. The champion mares received standing ovations. The large-framed Diarada KJ by Diarado/ Contendro (breeder: Klaus Jürgens, Sehnde) with her powerful jumping ability became the champion jumper mare. The champion dressage mare Lillyfee by Londontime/Falkland (breeder: Frido Dodenhoff, Horstedt) was heading on a dense field of highquality dressage mares. The champion in the division for Halfbreds called Luciana by Lauries Crusador xx/Hohenstein (breeder: Uwe Heinrichs, Balje; exhibitor: Hermann Jarck, Himmelpforten) was equal in quality to the dressage mares. The guidelines for breeding take hold The vintage of young stallions at the licensing 2012 rounded off the positive impression regarding the quality in 2012. We obtained an absolutely satisfying licensing result in spite of the fact that we evaluated 150 colts less during the pre-selections. The licensing committee was very pleased with the quality of this year’s stallions and the visibly good development over the past years that has led to this vintage. The buyers confirmed this impression. The brisk and moneyed demand in respect to the dressage sires sets a positive signal for those who raise colts. The jumper stallions were also convincing in their performances. The mare as well as the stallion vintage in 2012 clearly reflected that the goals of the breeding guidelines are taking hold more and more. The goal to reach a transfer of power out of a rhythmically working hind leg over a well-constructed back in combination with an uphill and balanced self-carriage is more visible again. At its highest level of quality this goal is required to be internationally competitive. The top of the jumper stallions was exceptional. Overall the frame of the horses could be improved as well as the canter stride and its effectiveness and ability. I can only hope that the majority of these exceptional talents of the 2012 licensing will be allowed enough time for development and will receive the best training management. A new foal selection concept The auction year started with a powerful winter auction. At the same time auction manager JörgWilhelm Wegener introduced a new selection system for the elite foal auction. The idea was to combine the selection process. Instead of evaluating foals at foal shows and foal selection sites he suggested to present foals for auction selection at all foal shows of the Hanoverian Association that 4 The Hanoverian 02|2013 Annual Report would then strengthen the foal shows of breeding clubs. A photo and video service should then be available at these sites. The photos and the video footage should be made available for the auction catalog and for the internet. The goal was to combine as many steps as possible to ease the load of the breeders. The organizers of the horse breeding clubs as well as the selectors gladly accepted this idea. The new concept was successfully implemented in summer. This selection system then with a few improvements will also be used in 2013. The auction activities in 2012 must be viewed with the current market development in mind. Even though all individual auction types delivered good results and healthy price structures the return overall was less than in the previous year. How can this be explained? There are several reasons. 961 horses were offered for sale; 100 horses less. As always foreign countries were important sale areas but not as strong as in previous years. The share of exports was only 41,8 percent. The economic situation is tense in many European countries. This applies especially to southern Europe but also to Eastern European countries. The US-market has not been able to link up with the results of the past years. The activities in China are become successful but this market is not developed enough to balance out the entire situation. Furthermore resellers and dealers also hold off because of the market situation. We offered horses for recreational use on every riding horse auction as an innovation. This measure has been accepted well and has introduced new customers to the auction program. An era of Verden’s auction history came to an end with the moving dismissal of Friedrich-Wilhelm Isernhagen; he was the auctioneer for the Hanoverian Association for many, many years. After 37 years Friedrich-Wilhelm Isernhagen retired from the auction podium by his own wishes after the stallion market. The audience was filled with respect and admiration as it said goodbye for his longstanding and phenomenal performance. Daniel Delius and Bernd Hickert are his successors. They held their debut at the November auction with lots of zest on the new podium at the short side across from the tunnel gaining trust and acceptance from exhibitors and buyers. Historical event A historical event took place in the Niedersachsenhalle the night before the May auction. It was the Musical Ride of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. These policemen who ride black Hanoverians combined their visit to celebrate the anniversary of the throne of the Queen of England with a short trip to Verden. They made something happen that will not be repeated for a long time at the Niedersachsenhalle with this visit. The precision quadrille with 32 riders was received with great fascination by a completely sold out arena. With this visit the Mounties who are a distinctive mark of Canada expressed their strong ties to the Hanoverian horse. We obtained good results and healthy price structures at the auctions. Dornvelder was the top horse at the 127th Elite Auction. Photo: Ernst The Olympic Games in Great Britain’s capitol London were the competition highlight of 2012. It was a celebrated event that was enjoyed by people from all around the globe. It was the 100th anniversary of the Olympic Equestrian Games and we witnessed top performances at Greenwich Park. The event riders were the first to enter into Olympic competition. They created a wave of euphoria. Germany’s team won gold after the completion of the three elements. Ingrid Klimke laid the foundation for the success with FRH Butts Abraxxas by Heraldik xx/Kronenkranich xx (breeder: Friedrich Butts, Bülkau). New Zealand won the bronze medal. Eventing legend Mark Todd earned important points for his team with NBZ Campino by Contendro/Pinkus (breeder: Hans-Jürgen Abel, Bremervörde). Dual success from a breeding perspective: Diacontinus has become a premium sire in jumping; his fullsister St. Pr. A. Diarada KJ won at the Herwart von der Decken-Show two months earlier. Photo: Schreiner The German dressage equip wagered only on German D-blood and won silver. Three of the four women riders placed their trust in Hanoverians. Dorothee Schneider had her Olympic debut on Diva Royal by Don Frederico/Warkant (breeder: Heinz Braul, Lehrte). The pair had excellent performances and finished in seventh place after the Grand Prix freestyle. Desperados FRH by De Niro/Wolkenstein II (breeder: Herbert Schütt, Hemmoor) was another member of the silver medal winning team with rider Kristina Sprehe. The very typy black stallion and his young rider impressed with excellent performances during the entire show season. The pair finished the Olympic Games with an eighth place after the Grand Prix Freestyle. Anabel Balkenhol and Dablino FRH by De Niro/Wanderbusch II (breeder: Weert-Arnold Sweers, Krummhörn) participated in the individual competition. The potential of this pair was worthy of a medal and belongs to the World’s best. The Dutch team won the bronze medal. Salinero by Salieri/Lungau (breeder: Horst Bünger, Essel) was a proven team member. The results in the jumping competitions at these Olympic Games were unsatisfactory from a German and a Hanoverian point of view. Christian Ahlmann and Codex One by Contendro/Glückspilz (breeder: Wilhelm Berghorn, Stolzenau) proved their abilities throughout the show season with top placements in Doha (UAE), St. Gallen (SUI) and Aachen. As so often the daily output decided and the duo never reached its potential in London. The Equestrian Games were a grandiose advertising tool for the equestrian sport. If you are looking for the entire performance record of the various associations during the past show season the WBFSH-rating offers clarification. The World Breeding Federation for Sport Horses collects all the competition results worldwide and rates these for the three disciplines every year. The ranking of the breed associations underlines Hanover’s top position: Hanover holds second place in dressage, second place in eventing and seventh place in jumping. with its successes at renowned international competitions. We are lacking Hanoverian horses at the international level in the last mentioned discipline. Identify top talents and start to train early We must identify top talents as early as possible to be able to send them down the right path. For the first time the youngest Hanoverian athletes are in the limelight at the National Championships in Warendorf in front of a broad public. This platform highlighted talented rising youngsters once again in 2012. They will prove and confirm their abilities in a few years in international competitions. Hanoverian youngsters were showered with medals particularly in dressage and in eventing. The four-year old gelding Dance in Black by Don Frederico/Lauries Crusador xx (breeder: Adolf Bachmann, Wesenberg) also received a bronze medal with rider AnnChristin Wienkamp. Two Hanoverians earned bronze medals in the dressage ring in the five-year old division: Celle’s state stud sire Don Darius by Don Frederico/Markus Deak xx (breeder: Claus Quast, Hamburg) with rider Mike Habermann and Bobcat by Breitling W/Silvano (breeder: Hans-Heinrich Oltmann, Borstel) with rider Isabel Bache. Hanover confirmed its top position in eventing. Team Olympic champion Sandra Auffarth steered her five-year old Corona by Contendro/Garibaldi II (breeder: Diedrich Meyer, Koehlen) to win gold. Sarah Algottson enjoyed winning silver with Kalle by King Kolibri/Really Fabulous xx (breeder: Birgit Diekmann, Winterfeld) in the division for six-year olds. One of the next rungs of the career ladder of an up-and-coming athlete is the F.E.I. World Championships for young dressage horses that take place during the International Dressage And Jumper Festival in Verden on an annual basis. The World Organizations F.E.I. and WBFSH honored the first class conditions that are offered by the facility of the Hanoverian Association and the area of Verden’s racetrack and have secured Verden as the site for the World Championships for three more years until 2015. The international audience experienced something sensational in 2012: Woodland Farouche. This six-year old and most beautiful British Hanoverian mare by Fürst Heinrich/Dimaggio (breeder: Lynne Crowden, Great Britain) exhibited dressage performances no horse had ever done before her and received a well-deserved world-record score and the gold medal whilst successfully defending her title from 2011. verian Association does. Robert Kock was elected the association’s youth speaker during the meeting for the youth in 2012 in succession to Maren Schlender. A total of 762 young persons participated in the Competitions for Young Breeders and 90 people participated in the Finals for Young Breeders in Verden. Hanoverian Young Breeders performed very well at the national level at the Horse Centre Standenbuehl in Rhineland-Pfalz-Saar. They won the silver medal overall and won in the older division. We have been fighting to maintain the hip brand for two years. We experienced an unexpected breakthrough in 2012. The Lower House of the German Federal Republic passed a reform in respect to the regulations for the prevention of cruelty to animals that allows for the use of a hot brand as an identification tool for horses. EU regulations in Germany earmark marking horses by means of a hip brand as the only method of identification next to a transponder. According to the new bill the hip brand is permitted as a method of identification until the end of 2018. After 2018 the hip brand may be used on horses in Germany with a local anesthetic. This change will take effect from the beginning of February. For many this provisional success was an unexpected result. It proves that with unanimity, courageous commitment, staying power and competence goals can be reached that deem impossible at times. More challenges will pop up and horse breeds will be asked to take a stand. The hip brand is a powerful symbol. n A breakthrough becomes apparent in the fight for maintaining the hip brand. Photo: Archiv Hanoverians celebrated successes at the Olympic Games in London. Diva Royal and Dorothee Schneider won team silver. Photo: Lafrentz It becomes evident that FRH is a seal of quality whilst studying the competition results. The Olympic participants Desperados, Dablino and Abraxxas carry it as a prefix to their names and demonstrate impressively the goal of this measure to identify top combinations early, to support them consistently and prepare them systematically for great tasks. Isabell Werth’s Don Johnson by Don Frederico and Anna-Sophie Fiebelkorn’s Benetton Dream by Brentano II were accepted into the selected FRH-circle in 2012. Hardly any other breed association is able to enjoy such lively Young Breeders’ activities as the Hano- The Hanoverian 02|2013 7 Breeding It does not work without thoroughbred blood As the newly selected “Trainer of the Year”, Hans Melzer, the national trainer for event riders in Germany, advocates the use of Thoroughbreds and raves about Hanoverian event horses. By Britta Züngel THE HANOVERIAN: What are the demands that the modern sport of eventing makes on the breeding of horses? Hans Melzer: “In earlier times eventing was an endurance sport with its heart in the long crosscountry course. At that time a totally different type of horse was in demand; a pure Thoroughbred or a 7/8th-Thoroughbred. Since the Olympic Games in Athens in2004 a new format has been introduced in eventing: the cross-country course is reduced while the dressage has become significantly more difficult. The demands on stadium jumping have also increased. The various questions on the crosscountry course call for much greater rideability and more courage. The entire set-up has been changed for safety issues. There are a lot more technical questions now that demand correct riding and rideability. All of this has led to improved riding overall. The sport is a lot more attractive from a visual and an esthetic point of view. Jumper genes are important: Corona with rider Sandra Auffarth, Bundeschampion of Event Horses. Photo: C.bay Time and speed are the most important criteria in eventing. The share of blood plays an important role. Today there are many modern event horses of Thoroughbred type but whose pedigrees reflect only a little bit of Thoroughbred blood in the back. These horses are in demand today. This is an advantage for Hanoverians that – moreover – dispose of first-rate dressage and jumping genes. Many horses that represent the modern event horse type can be made fast enough for cross-country with a tailored training’s program.” THE HANOVERIAN: What does the modern event horse look like? Hans Melzer: “A true rectangular horse is in demand. We need a horse with a lot of neck and a truly sloping shoulder. This is important for galloping and for the balance. Balance is of great im- 8 The Hanoverian 02|2013 portance on the cross-country course. Horses with necks that are well positioned and long enough can balance themselves better.” THE HANOVERIAN: Last but not least the demand for German horses has increased because of the grand successes of German riders. How does the market develop? Hans Melzer: “Years ago people traveled to New Zealand, Australia and Ireland to buy event horses. There you found the 7/8th-Thoroughbred that was a large-framed and courageous horse that could really gallop. These horses actually are ‘out’. Now riders from Australia, New Zealand and Great Britain come to Germany looking for event horses. Our breed is now much in demand because of the format change. For years an event horse was a ‘byproduct’ and of no interest to breeders. Today good event horses sell for high prices. Many consider sending horses off for event training. The possibilities to have horses professionally trained have improved a great deal. The sport for juniors and young riders nationally and also internationally presents a great market for talented horses as well. In other words today a breeder undoubtedly has the opportunity to market a horse as an event horse at a good price even if he bred the horse accidentally.” THE HANOVERIAN: What do event riders expect when they purchase a horse? Hans Melzer: “Event riders like to train their horses. The fundamental training plays a significant role on the way to top competitions. You cannot buy what the horses learn during this training phase. To buy a trained horse and then learn to deal with it is not only expensive but it also takes a lot of time to build up trust which is of utmost importance in eventing. Breeding The pedigree does not play a decisive role. In the end it is as the saying goes, ‘A good horse has no pedigree’. The trend is obvious though: A jumper pedigree with a blood connection is preferred.” THE HANOVERIAN: Which attributes do Thoroughbreds improve in the Warmblood breed? Hans Melzer: “The sport of eventing still requires fast horses with plenty of stamina. Thoroughbred horse just simply have it. You might have to ride 800 meters per minute on the cross-country course. That’s tough! The Thoroughbred also passes on a certain type of lightness for riding. And they act quicker than pure Warmbloods. The number of girls and young women who do eventing is increasing all the time. It is often easier for female riders to work with Thoroughbred horses. The use of a Thoroughbred sire is always a longterm project for a breeder. It is often the second or third generation that becomes interesting. However the past has shown that blood is necessary for refinement. It is important to use Thoroughbreds with jumping ability. The sire Heraldik xx was one of those and so was Star Regent xx. Now it is Nobre xx who passes on jumping ability and who has been a successful event horse himself. Last year he was well represented by the phenomenal Butt’s Avondale at the Bundeschampionate.” THE HANOVERIAN: Numerous very successful championship horses carry the Hanoverian hip brand. Which qualities do you value in Hanoverians? Hans Melzer: “Breeders have always used Thoroughbred blood in Hanover. The canter in Hanoverians is usually flater and less stressful than the canter in Holstein horses for instance. This is significant and in the end has a great impact in our sport. The type of the Hanoverian horse has changed over the past years in favor of eventing. The Hanoverian has become lighter. One could very well imagine Shutterfly to be an event horse. There are plenty of examples in the Hanoverian breed of horses with jumper pedigrees that are good dressage horses or are horses with good dressage pedigrees that jump nicely. The Program of Hanoverian Jumper Horse Breeding is also an interesting project. There are always horses participating in the free-jumping competitions that are suitable for eventing. The Bundeschampion Corona is excellent advertising. She is a top horse! She has great moving qualities and lots of jumping ability. And then her ability to gallop! It will be great advertisement for the breed as well as the sport when we succeed in combining the right horse with the right rider.” THE HANOVERIAN: How can the cooperation between the breed and the sport be improved? Hans Melzer: “We have a great clientele of talented event riders here in Germany. We must work on expanding the network between breeders, riders and trainers. It is important to make contacts and to be open–minded. Matching horses with riders is the greatest deficit we encounter. Our top riders hold a position of luxury at the moment as they have multiple championship horses available to them. Many riders only have one horse. If we could do something to change that, it would really be good.” THE HANOVERIAN: In eventing the system of promoting appears very effective. How is the system set up in Germany? Hans Melzer: “Eventing is the only discipline where young horses are constantly turned out on Bundeschampionate up to senior championships. All horses (except the French Opgun Louvo) that were long-listed for Germany at the Olympic Games in London had competed in Warendorf. This is a good thing and it has proven itself. After Warendorf the six- and seven-year olds continue on competing at the World Championships for young horses in France – a great competition. Horses that compete in France have a true perspective for the top sport. Jumper and dressage competitions take place all year round. Eventing is purely an outdoor sport that limits the number of events per year and gives individual competitions a certain value . National trainer Hans Melzer, “Blood-influenced horses are in demand in all three disciplines.” Photo: Rau Last but not least institutions like the DOKR (German Olympic Committee for Riding), FORS and the Hanoverian Association for the Supporting of Hanoverian Horses FRH have contributed to the support of event horses. That has helped our sport a lot. Eventing is still a bit in the margin. Even though we are more successful than the other disciplines event riders do not have sponsors like jumper and dressage riders. It has become more interesting for breeders to keep a horse for one or two years longer. That is todays market!” THE HANOVERIAN: Which advice do you give Hanoverian breeders? Hans Melzer: “Continue to breed with Thoroughbreds every now and again. Blood-influenced horses are in demand in all three disciplines. Hanoverians have plenty of jumper and dressage genes. Rideability is the bonus the modern German breed offers. When we are successful in competition we have a market. Many event riders come to Germany. There still is great potential.” n The Hanoverian 02|2013 9 Sport ductory classes with 75,85 percent. The pair dominated the field of competitors in the final and finished the demanding test with 77,71 percent, 1st place. An impressive performance! Another Hanoverian followed in second place: First Class with rider Juliane Brunkhorst. During the qualifications it became apparent that the level of quality of the competitors in 2012 was very high. After all the horse-rider combinations from the 15 qualifying events announced their arrival at this competition highlight with scores of 70 percent or better. Nineteen-year old Charlott-Maria Schürmann rode the champion Burlington, a nine-year old stallion by Breitling W/Rohdiamant (breeder: Hans-Heinrich Oltmann, Borstel). Family Schürmann have owned the chestnut sire since 2009. Charlott-Maria Schürmann qualified him in the same year for the Bundeschampionat for six-year old dressage horses in Warendorf. The pair participated in the European Championships for juniors in 2010. They were members of the gold-winning team for young riders and won an individual silver medal at the European Championships in Bern in 2012. The foundation for a victory in Frankfurt was laid then. Frankfurt and the young stars The Nürnberger Burgpokal is the stepping-stone for Germany’s best dressage horses to enter into international top competition. The best seven- to nineyear olds compete in fifteen qualifications throughout the show season to then be allowed to participate in this renowned class at the Hessian Metropolis. Fourteen horses participated; six of the hopeful talents carried the Hanoverian hip brand. The final classes developed into a Hanoverian triumphal procession: The impressive chestnut stallion Burlington had strong performances with rider Charlott-Maria Schürmann. The pair won the intro- We tried and won Burlington and Charlott-Maria qualified with a score of 71,707 percent in Krefeld on the Farm Auric. “We thought we would just give it a try,” the committed rider says in retrospect. Burlington who is a spectators’ favorite and his young partner had a first-class performance in the dressage ring in Frankfurt. From excellent flying changes and very good extensions to perfect half-passes – every movement was a success. “I have the world’s best horse,” Charlott-Maria Schürmann announced after her ride. She was totally overwhelmed and did not anticipate a victory. “Burlington was very relaxed and I just had a good feeling on him. He is a fighter and tries to do everything right,” she continued. The sire of the champion called Breitling W was a finalist in the Burgpokal. He sired the championess in 2009 called the Hanoverian mare Blind Date. Breitling W is the first stallion to have sired two Burgpokal champions. Juliane Brunkhorst took second place with First Class by Fürst Heinrich/Rubinstein (breeder: Martin Otten-Willers, Kutenholz). Juliane Brunkhorst has riden the now eight-year old mare since 2011. The pair has had several S-level victories and placements. The pair was in seventh position after the introductory class with a score of 71,317 percent. He collects ribbons in jumper competitions on ‘his Hanoverians’! By Julia Martin I Winning is fun: Scatman and Stefan Kleine. Photo: privat f you are going to taking a trip to Family Kleine in Warmsen in the Nienburg/Weser area you will need your GPS especially during the last kilometers. You will be directed to drive this way and that crisscrossing a large preserve called Uchter Moor on lonely roads – a somewhat unreal yet charming region. Finally you see a large and red bricked facility. Fenced paddocks and generous fields make you realize instantly: Horses live here. You have reached your destination. Stefan and Nicole Kleine welcome you with open arms. The property has belonged to the family for more than 100 years. Dairy cattle and fattening of pigs used to be the main source of business on the farm when Mr. and Mrs. Kleine Sen. operated it. Today’s 43-year old junior successfully completed an agricultural and a business apprenticeship. He is a manager at the ‘Raiffeisen-Farmer’s Union e.G. in the next town over. The farm has changed. Cattle and pigs were sold and the barns were rebuilt for horses. Stefan Kleine still farms 25 hectares. He produces his own straw, hay and grain; the rest of the land is used for grazing. “There have always been horses on our farm and usually a broodmare,” the committed horseman remembers. “I just did not let go and one day we had a riding horse, too.” Stefan Kleine started to ride rather late in life. “I did not start out with a pony. I enjoyed soccer and the youth fire patrol. I became interested when I turned thirteen.” The young athlete considered dressage to be a ‘necessary nuisance’; his heart beats for jumping. Stefan Kleine has competed on homebred products in numerous local shows. He became Regional Champion in 2007. Today he successfully competes up to the M-level. The family bought the vigorous bay as a 15 years old who had already delivered eight foals. Argentin had her last foal at 25. Father Heinz Kleine bred her first to the jumper producer Landjonker: Larina was born in 1996. She was awarded a Ia-prize twice at the regional show in Warmsen. She received the score of 8,0 for her style and for her ability in the free-jumping chute at the mare performance test. Keyword: homebred products Stefan Kleine recognized Larina’s spirit for jumping and trained her up to L-level. “I highly value riding my mares. You learn so many important factors. Larina was ambitious and she had the right attitude towards the sport. She passed these attributes on to her offspring,” the breeder praises one of his best mares. The wiry mare who belongs to the Program for Hanoverian Jumper Horse Breeding has proven her qualities not only in competition but also in the breeding program. Her first son is Scatman who was born in 2000 is a youngster who is especially close to the breeder’s heart. Stefan Kleine has already obtained more than 150 placings from the A- to the M-level with this Stakkato son. “One of my hobbies is to take him to the horse shows at weekend. I enjoy it so much. I will not sell him,” so the rider. “Scatman is perky and wants to do everything correctly. We often place up front!” Larina has delivered seven additional foals: Grisu by Graf Grannus is a successful competitor. Lorenzo by Laptop collected his first competitive experiences with Stefan Kleine as his rider. He sold to Great Britain on the November auction in 2006. Daughter Stella by Stakkato remaines in the breeder’s barn and serves as a broodmare. In 2010 Breeder‘s Portrait she delivered a colt by Quintender, in 2011 it was a filly by Perpignon and now she is in foal to Cassini II. St. Pr. mare Camilla by Contendro is Larina’s second daughter that was sold to a privately owned breeding barn. Quintessa by Quaid is in the Program for Hanoverian Jumper Horse Breeding and lives in the mare barn of Family Kleine just like her dam. The beautiful four-year old advanced to become the champion jumper mare of the show in Loccum last year. She is a state’s premium award recipient. Quintessa is in foal to Balou du Rouet. Larina’s youngest is a one-year old daughter by Cornet’s Baloand She is now in foal to Celle’s state stud sire Viscount. ‘Usually I do not use such young stallions,” Stefan Kleine says with a smile. Stefan Kleine has seen visiting Verden’s licensing as a responsibility since he was 25. “This youngster just struck me to be so serene; he fascinated me.” The passionate breeder does not believe in fashion stallions. “I select stallions for my mares that are proven in competition and that produce descendants that do well on a stadium courses. Performance is the key to success! More good things Foundation mare Agentin delivered St. Pr. mare Charlotta in combination with the sire Conteur. She has also delivered two outstanding daughters: Chakira by Chacco-Blue received the dream score of 9,0 in the free-jumping part of the mare performance test. Her filly by Light-On was the champion of the show in Landsbergen. She found new owners on the 2012 foal auction. Chakira’s full-sister St. Pr. aspirant Chantal took center stage last year when she won her division at the free-jumping competition of the Program of Hanoverian Jumper Horse Breeding. She became reserve champion of the jumper mares at the Herwart von der DeckenShow a few months later. “These successes are very important to me,” Stefan Kleine summarizes. “Jumper horses are marketable quite a bit later than dressage horses. Therefore I see the Program for Hanoverian Jumper Horse Breeding as a very valuable initiative of the association. We as breeders are given the opportunity to present our products at an early stage to a large number of horse enthusiasts.” den in 2007 delivered a colt in 2012 by the sire Catoki. This colt placed forth on the foal show in Landesbergen. Thirty horses including a few boarders are stabled in the Family Kleine facility. Word quickly got out that weanlings are raised under the best conditions in Warmsen. Family Kleine has a small but wonderful clientele because of what they offer to their equine enthusiasts: generous box stalls with paddock access during the winter months, fields in the summer and daily handling with first-class care. Stefan Kleine is supported by his wife Nicole who has not allowed herself to be infected by her husband’s equine virus but who enjoys helping and who sometimes ‘stops him in his tracks a bit.’ Stefan Kleine starts the young horses under saddle at the age of three, “Most horses are sold when they are four or five years old and have their first placings in competitions.” Kleine is an active board member in the Riding Club Warmsen just like his dad. “I understand older breeders who give up the breeding program. Training horses is very expensive and nobody can afford to send three or four horses in training for a year. The training is important for a successful sale.” Stefan Kleine greatly values Verden’s auction program as a marketing platform, “You are looked after openly and honestly. Every presentation in Verden is advertising for your own breeding program. You make many important contacts.” It becomes apparent that the breeding program of Family Kleine will be continued with the next generation: Ten-year old daughter Laura already has a knack for the horses. Son Mika who is just six years old is very interested in all the agricultural equipment on the farm. That is definitely a promising start! n Chantal, Reserve Champion on the Herwart von der Decken-Show. The well-being of the horses is of utmost importance. By Inga Seba-Eichert S abine and Peter Eisenmann have called the “Finca ES Fangar”on Mallorca/Spain their home for twelve years. Today 75 horses are stabled on ES Fangar including 10 Hanoverian state’s premium mares. The pedigrees reveal the names of famous dressage producers like Donnerhall, Weltmeyer, Rubinstein, Londonderry, Wolkentanz and Hochadel. The best genetic foundation for breeding quality horses for the sport of dressage! Family Eisenmann does not leave anything to chance. Epigenetic principles determine the breeding program and influence the daily training. The stables in Moorish style 18 The Hanoverian 02|2013 Epigenetic in the breeding of horses According to classical genetics the genetic material in each individual is more or less prescribed however modern scientific findings allow for factors like nutrition, environmental influences, emotions and lifestyle to have a sustaining influence that will even be passed on to the next generation. As an example and in respect to the breeding of horses this means that one can influence the intelligence, the character and the health of a horse at a later time. You can find these principles everywhere on ES Fangar. The box stall walls for example are painted pink as the color pink supposedly has a soothing effect on horses. The mares are ridden or worked in hand as their health conditions allow during the pregnancy and the time of lactation. This improves the mare’s condition and stimulates eagerness to work. Nursing foals stay with their dams during the work. This ensures that the foals are well conditioned and get used to all the activities on a breeding farm in a playful fashion and at an early age. Including epigenetics is exciting and unusual. It will be interesting to review the gathered experiences over the years. The oldest horses born on ES Fangar are now five years old. They are being prepared for future tasks on the Finca exclusively. Spacious outdoor rings and a light and airy covered-arena both equipped with first-rate footing create top conditions. ES Fangar offers wonderful trail-riding opportunities on the generously designed racetrack as well as a hotwalker for conditioning. ES Fangar has a playground for the young ones. A well-designed indoor International lunging ring is also available. Jochen Schumacher from the Riding Centre Reken accompanied the building of the facility in an advisory capacity. The master in equine management oversees the training of the horses. He receives professional support from Family Langehanenberg and Matthias Alexander Rath. The training goals are set for each individual horse according to its developmental stage. The mares are only inseminated with frozen semen. There is a separate designated area on ES Fangar for insemination and medical care. Homeopathic treatments take a superior role in the medical care. The ES Fangar breeding and training program goal is to create a steadfast and trusting sport horse that is in harmony with itself and its environment. Beautiful stables in Moorish style, grazing fields with an old tree population reaching as far as the horizon and generously designed shelters describe this paradise for horses. The feeding needs of the horses are met with great effort and engagement. Due to the weather conditions there are no grazing fields during the hot and dry summer months as we are used to from Germany. Cisterns may dry out because of it. Family Eisenmann and its team spend a lot of time on the individual care of each horse. Feed is prepared for each horse individually in a climatecontrolled kitchen. The horses are fed twice a day. While the concentrated food is very similar to our food products, the roughage is very different. Early cut oats is considered Mallorcan hay and is very rich in energy. “Classical’ hay from the mainland compliments a ration of Mallorcan hay. The horses also receive homegrown barley grass to cover the needs for vitamins. Biological agriculture In addition to breeding horses Family Eisenmann run an ecological farming program on the farm that is 1,000 hectares. They grow and/or produce apricots, almonds, olive oil and wine in the sunny environment. The family has been consistently improving the quality of the soil since they bought the ‘Finca’. This also through composting the horse manure. All vines were newly planted. The grapes are gathered by hand that ensures that only the best grapes are picked and delivered to the vinery. The first wine vintages with bio-seal have already convinced international wine connoisseurs. The striking chestnut stallion finished the dressage index on an above average eighth place with 110,55 points. Bon Balou descends from the Heinrich Wecke breeding program in Stadthagen. Jens Peter Aggesen bought him on Verden’s stallion sales in 2008. He stood at stud on the breeding farm WM in Reessum. Last year the Dreamscape Farm situated near the Metropolis Vancouver in far-west Canada bought him. He impressed with his powerful jumping style and his almost unlimited potential as well as with his effective trot movement and his good canter in the stallion performance test. Another Hanoverian stallion also successfully completed the test: Vive Victory descends from the breeding program of Knights Gate Farm in Welland, Ontario. The large-framed son of Viva Voltaire/Akzent II was licensed during the summer at Hilltop Farm in Maryland, USA. During the stallion performance test he proved his versatile predisposition with obtaining an overall index of 109,97 (9th place), a dressage index of 113,43 (6th place) and a jumper index of 106,27 (10th place). The four-year old impressive Oldenburg stallion Qredit by Quaterback/Dream of Glory – presented by Hilltop Farm – became the performance test-champion with an overall score of 126,59 and the best dressage stallion (135,93). He proved to be a nice jumper, too with an index of 113,16 (6th place). Bliss MF from Zweibrücken who is another Balou du Rouet/Argentinus son finished in second place overall(122,31). His jumping ability was a highlight as expected (jumper index 124,23/2nd) but the well-constructed bay was also able to convince with the quality of his basic gaits and his rideability (dressage index 119,44/3rd). The Hanoverian licensing committee licensed both stallions as well as five-year old Contratto who is an American Holstein stallion by Contendro/ Lord Calando (overall index 114,38/5th; jumper index 118,58/3rd; dressage index 109,08/9th) and the four-year old Westphali- Bon Balou obtained the highest jumper index. an Lord Adonis by Lordanos/Raphael (overall index 111,58/8th; jumper index 111,83/7th; dressage index 110,78/7th). The strengths of these two stallions lay in their jumping abilities while still exhibiting good quality in the basic gaits, good rideability and very good working willingness. These four stallions are valuable additions to the already available stallions for Hanoverian breeders in North America. Their bloodlines have more than proven themselves in Germany and have not been available in the United States or in Canada. Jumper stallions dominated the test in numbers. The top group was very close; even more so than the index points reflect. “I was especially pleased about the fact that many stallions were much better prepared for the test than last year,” training’s leader Harald Hoffmann said. The results are determined in accordance with the old HLP (stallion performance test) –model in agreement with the German FN and the participating breed organizations. The judges Antonius Bornemann and Georg van den Boom have experience in judging the HLP from Germany just like the guest riders Gerd Könemann (Jumping) and Kim Pfeiffer (dressage). Paul Gummelt was invited to view the training progress whilst he was in Germany. Host Summer Stoffel highlighted that this has been the test with the most participants here on her Silver Creek Farm. The owners were satisfied about the condition the stallions were in when they entered into the final testing days. They were even more impressed about the fitness of the stallions after the completion of the test. Overall the test was a large step forward towards further establishing the stallion performance testing program in North America. Info: www.nastalliontesting.com LC The Hanoverian 02|2013 19 International THE HANOVERIAN: Which challenges do Chinese riders have to overcome in the forthlargest country of the world? Jörg Jacobs, “The lack of learning opportunities about the training of horses is the biggest problem and even bigger than the actual process of riding. China only has a limited internet. Except for in Shanghai and in Peking there are no riding schools or riding clubs where fundamental knowledge all around the horse is taught. A lot could be improved in respect to this infrastructure. There is no classical training system. The distances play a great role in this widespread country. It is not uncommon to drive 2,000 kilometers to a horse show. The conditions demand a great amount of creativity and spontaneity from me as the trainer,.” THE HANOVERIAN: What does the daily training look like in the riding centre in Hailan? Project China The sport of riding consistently increases in popularity in China. One of the largest private facilities is Heilan International Equestrian Club near Shanghai. Trainer Jörg Jacobs has visited the facility regularly for a year and reports his impressions. By Julia Martin THE HANOVERIAN: The equestrian sport enters a country that is extremely rich in culture. How important is the equestrian sport in China? Jörg Jacobs, “Racing has a long standing tradition in China. Now the equestrian sport is becomeing more and more attractive. It is an exclusive sport though and only people who make a considerable living are able to afford the sport. The emphasis lies on jumping and mainly men do it. You only find women in the saddle with the mounted police. A state support program is in place however not to the extent other Olympic disciplines are subsidized like. The Heilan Equestrian Club is based on the private initiative of one businessman.” 20 The Hanoverian 02|2013 Jörg Jacobs, “About 400 horses are stabled in Hailan. There is a group of show riders and a group of competition horses. I attend to the competitive group that has about 16 riders who train on average three to four horses each. Most horses are Hanoverians. The riders are not responsible for the stable duties in China. This is different in Germany. My coaching starts with my emphasizing how important it is for the riders to communicate with the grooms to know if the horses are well and fit. It is my responsibility to teach everything that relates to the sport of riding: grooming, feeding, training for rider and horse as well as horse show planning.” THE HANOVERIAN: Which successes have taken place and what are your goals? Jörg Jacobs, “Our riders placed well at several international competitions in 2012. The team won the bronze medal at the Chinese Eventing Championships. At a two-star event the team won and in the individual competition; we finished in second, third, forth and fifth place. We are happy with the results. The project is a long-term project including training riders and horses. Riders from China come to Verden regularly to train at the Training and Marketing Centre. We have also been carrying out the following system since Verden’s summer auction: Chinese customers buy talented young horses mainly for eventing. These are trained in Verden and prepared for big competitions. They are shipped to China after having gained enough experience. The China Games and the Olympics are our goal. Riders and officials are not interested in short-term triumphs. They want to celebrate successes in the long run and reward respectable and competent riding.” n Hanoverian Highlights 2013 HANNOVERANER VERBAND In Retirement Crazy Chicken. Photo: Pierach April 12/12 128th Elite-Auction Dr. Enno Hempel worked for the Hanoverian Association for 46 years. He officially retired from his employment in December 2012 after he turned 65 years of age. Hanoverian riding horses and foals May 3/4 May-Auction | Dressage | Jumping | Leisure | D r. Enno Hempel discovered his passion for riding whilst still at school. He was employed at the association from the fall auction in 1966 onwards. He studied medicine and specialized in neurology and psychiatrics at the same time. He took over his father’s practice in Verden. Dr. Enno Hempel decided to devote his time entirely to the Hanoverian Association in 1988. “I held two jobs. At some point I had to make a decision.” Enno Hempel said at his retirement celebration, “The horses won!” First he worked as an assistant to Hans Joachim Koehler. “He said I could write with ten fingers blind-folded and therefore I was qualified,” Dr. Enno Hempel remembers with amusement. He worked with Rainer Kiel in the training and marketing centre after the Koehler era and before he took on the responsibilities as the department manager for public relations that is a department he has developed. The development of foreign markets was closest to his heart throughout his entire employment. He made valuable contacts for the association all over the world through his good command of languages and his open human nature. Systemizing customer service is his achievement. Dr. Enno Hempel is the managing director of Equiver GmbH. Once a year he organizes the so-called Verdiana that is an equestrian festival all around the horse for the recreational sport of riding on the terrain of Verden’s racetrack. He was very influential in establishing ‘Pferdeland Niedersachsen’ GmbH (Horse Country Lower Saxony) in 2005. He has been the managing director since 2007. Dr. Enno Hempel retired from his active employment with the association in 2011 and mainly attended to the management of ‘Pferdeland Niedersachsen’ GmbH. One of his main projects was preserving the hip brand that is an issue he has pushed ahead and which – at present – looks positive for the breeder. Dr. Enno Hempel will assist the association with his knowledge and his skills in future, too. n July 19/20 Summer-Auction | Dressage | Jumping | Leisure | August, 7 to 11 International Dressage and Show Jumping Festvial Herwart v. d.
