August 3-4, 2013 The Sydney Morning Herald TIMELINES Tributes & Celebrations Timelines@smh.com.au (02) 9282 2742 IRENE GLEESON 1944-2013 Selflessness and strength I rene Gleeson fought and overcame many battles in her time as a missionary: late-night attacks by rebels, recurring bouts of malaria, depression, extreme isolation and the challenge of being a single white woman in one of the most volatile regions of the world. For 22 years, her home was Kitgum – a small, isolated community 30 kilometres from the Sudan border and seven hours’ drive from the capital of Uganda, Kampala. ‘‘Mama Irene’’ or ‘‘The General’’, as she was otherwise known, began her work on 7.3 hectares of dry, scrubby land donated by the local government. It was a ministry that would leave an indelible imprint on the hearts and lives of more than 20,000 waraffected Ugandans. On July 26, more than 10,000 people from the region assembled in Kitgum to pay tribute to their Australian hero following her death from oesophageal cancer. Past and present students danced, sang and pounded calabash drums, while staff and dignitaries spoke of a woman who changed the spiritual landscape of northern Uganda. They lamented the loss of this petite grandmother whose signature wide-brimmed hat, cheeky smile, twinkle in her bright eyes and ability to become ‘‘one with the locals’’ endeared her to so many of the Acholi people. They celebrated Gleeson’s remarkable achievements: the Irene Gleeson Foundation has built five primary schools, offering full daycare to 8000 children, including education, daily meals, clean water and medicines, as well as a vocational training centre catering for 1500 students, a 60-bed AIDS hospice, a community church and a radio station broadcasting to more than 1 million people. The child sponsorship program has 2300 sponsors. ‘‘There has never been such a large gathering ever in the history of Kitgum,’’ IGF Uganda chief executive John Paul Kiffasi said, and the community is now calling for a national day of remembrance. At her Sydney funeral, although slightly less theatrical, family and friends described Gleeson as having unshakeable faith, courage, tenacity, a quirky sense of humour and a deep love for the children in a forgotten part of the world. It was a mission that was born out of great personal sacrifice. In 1991, Gleeson, then 47, and her second husband, sold everything they owned, said goodbye to family and towed a small caravan to northern Uganda to rescue abducted child soldiers and children orphaned in the conflict between the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) and the Ugandan governments. Gleeson’s work in northern Uganda had been sparked by a visit three years earlier to some of the 40 children she and her husband sponsored in Ethiopia. Their suffering stirred buried emotions from her own troubled past. Irene Richards was born on December 30, 1944, as an illegitimate child to a US marine who left shortly before she arrived and mother Cynthia. Gleeson often spoke about the feelings of rejection and abandonment that would continue to haunt her. ‘‘I never felt wanted or loved,’’ she once said. Her teen years were troubled, with her mother battling depression and often leaving Irene in charge of her siblings. ‘‘I spent most of my childhood protecting and defending children,’’ Gleeson said in an interview. ‘‘I think that’s why I felt so strongly about the children of northern Uganda.’’ When Gleeson was 15 her mother died of cancer, leaving her to become housemother to her family. At 16, she married her first husband, Brian Twemlow, and together they had four children, but as the years passed those feelings of rejection and worthlessness resurfaced. After 20 years of marriage, she left her family to embark on a personal odyssey in search of peace and fulfillment: she studied literature and art, trekked the Himalayas, and sought spiritual answers, eventually hitting rock bottom at 37, depressed, suicidal and living in a neighbour’s granny flat. In 1982 she sought solace in a local church and it was there she made her peace with God, married again, to Jeff Gleeson, and heard God Bernadette Lafont, a French actor whose sensuality and ebullience HOCKING, John Frederick HORNE, Myfanwy Jane HOWS, Ailsa Mary JASZ, Elizabeth Myrtle JOSEPH, Isabelle Mary JOSEPH, Lynn Harvey KETTELL, Joan Mary MAIRS, John MALLINSON, Rodney Dennes MARJORAM, Nancy Laura McCALLUM, Mary Florence NGUYEN, Diana Dorothy NORQUAY, Margaret PHILLIPS, Allan George PRIEST, Gordon Harold QUACH, Helen RICHARDS, Ruth Alexandra RICKARD, Justin Roald RISTUCCIA, Michelangelo Francesco ROBERTS, Graham Wade ROBERTSON, Lachlan Alexander ROGERS, Joan Freedom SILVESTER, Claire Agnes SINCLAIR, June Raye STEIN, Frederick Adrian STONE, Kenneth Walter TANNER, Lila THE, Lucy WATTERSON, Roy WATTS, Jean Elizabeth WILLIAMS, Marguerite Frances Deaths and Funerals ADEY, Ralph William. Mission accomplished: (Top) Irene Gleeson in a quiet moment; (above) surrounded by some of the children she spent decades helping. Photo: Peter Rae speak to her about leaving Australia for Africa. ‘‘My life was finally back together. I didn’t want to leave my beautiful beach house, my children and the country I loved,’’ she told Charisma Magazine in 2009. In many ways she was the reluctant missionary. After a tearful farewell in December of 1991, she and Jeff set off. What confronted them at the end of their 19-hour flight was indeed unfamiliar territory: isolation, hopeless poverty, a community that practised witchcraft, animism, polygamy and a violent rebel insurrection that was gaining traction. After much red tape and negotiations, they were given a parcel of land. Equipped with an umbrella, finger puppets and a small camp stool, Gleeson gathered children, many of whom were former child soldiers, under the shade of a large mango tree and began teaching them to sing. Initially they sat like zombies in the dust. She soon added reading and writing to her teaching repertoire, carving letters in the dust. Then she noticed their bloated bellies and fed them beans from her caravan. Water was another pressing issue, so she worked with the locals to sink water bores. By day she sang and taught, and by night she sat under the dim light of a paraffin lamp and scribbled scripture on the walls of her caravan, while volleys of gunfire and mortar bombs exploded outside. One night, the war came knocking on her door. Six armed thugs brandishing AK-47s and machetes burst into their caravan, threatening to kill. ‘‘My first thought was, ‘I am going to die,’ ’’ she wrote in her autobiography, to be released in 2014. ‘‘Then I got angry and began yelling out the name of Jesus – they scampered away like frightened monkeys.’’ A short time after this incident, Gleeson’s marriage broke down. At 50, she found herself alone. Devastated, yet pragmatic, she said she never once thought of quitting. Using money from the sale of her homes, and the ongoing support from her church and friends around the world in collaboration with the local Acholi people, she pushed through – establishing Childcare International in 1995, which later became the Irene Gleeson Foundation (Australia). Two decades later, IGF is a major humanitarian force in the north of Uganda, without the structure of a large aid organisation. Kiffasi said ‘‘Mama Irene’s’’ decisions on what to build and when, often came down to her faith and nothing else. Drayton Nabers, former chief justice for Alabama and chairman for IGF US, agrees that Gleeson did things a little differently. ‘‘She had no infrastructure in those early days,’’ he said. ‘‘She had boys who became men and who grew up taking responsible positions within the organisation. They were just a cadre of disciples, not Harvard Business School graduates. But it all seemed to work.’’ As tough as it was for this Aussie grandmother, who never learnt to speak the local language and who struggled with the isolation, she persevered, displaying a courage that many were in awe of. In June 2009, her achievements were recognised by the Australian government when they named her an Officer of the Order of Australia for ‘‘service to international relations, particularly through sustained aid for children affected by war and HIV/AIDS in northern Uganda’’. One year later, she met the president of Uganda, Yoweri Kaguta Museveni. The war in the north of Uganda is over – the LRA has moved on, and the site where battles were fought and won by this spirited grandmother is now a sanctuary to the 8000 children who play happily in the sun. Gleeson’s battle was not in vain, because the victory is now theirs. Irene Gleeson is survived by four children and 15 grandchildren.
