FEBRUARY 2016 First United Methodist Church — Hartford, WI AT THE CROSS FUMC Mission Statement “Making Disciples of Christ” TAKE A LOOK . . . WOMEN’S RETREAT, BITS IS BACK, PASTOR PAUL’S BIBLE STUDY, YOUTH HAPPENINGS /PHOTOS , AND MORE! IMAGINE NO MALARIA GOAL REACHED AT FUMC! From Pastor Paul P. 3 UMW News P. 4 YOUTH NEWS P. 8 CONTACT INFORMATION First United Methodist Church 738 West Monroe Avenue Hartford, 53027 262.673.3290 Pastor Paul Johnsen pjohnsen@fumchartford.com Director of Children’s Ministries About 15 months ago, the Ad Council (now the new Leadership Board) voted to take on The “Imagine No Malaria” project that the UM Church was involved with. The larger Methodist Church had teamed up with Bill Gates and his wife and others to try to bring an end to Malaria. The total goal was to raise $10,000,000 over the course of about one year, $1,000,000 in Wisconsin alone. Our Wisconsin Imagine No Malaria total surpasses $890,000! We are getting closer and closer to our $1 million goal. The funds would be used to create and support new and existing medical facilities to deal with the disease, bed nets, education and a host of other ways to help those who were struggling with Malaria. FUMC Ad Council voted to pledge $10,000 to this cause. Quite a lofty goal! I would like to report that we not only reached our goal but exceeded it! The First United Methodist Church raised a total of (drum roll please) $10,872.40 as of January 1st, 2016! Thank you faithful FUMC members and friends, including the Sunday School, who set their own goal this fall. With God, we can do many things! The dates are Sept 23rd, 24th, and 25th. It is our goal to produce another fine dinner show as we have done in the past. But...in order to make our hopes a reality, we will need the help of our entire congregation. Start thinking of how you can be a part of this exciting endeavor. Then, when the volunteer sign up sheets come out, you will already know what you might like to do. I am always thankful for new beginnings and new opportunities. 2016 provides us all with the chance to start fresh. I am prayerfully optimistic about the church’s finances this coming year. Each month we pay an Apportionment to the Wisconsin Annual Conference. Every church is supposed to, but not all do or are able to. Our church has a proud history of paying our Apportionments in full every year. The following message from the Conference newsletter tells what those Apportionments are for: “Your apportionments help to afford care and support for children with AIDS and to speak out against violence in the Middle East, which is creating a new generation of orphans. Your apportionments are paying for teachers, pastors, and missionaries around the world—in Russia, Korea, and Africa, to name a few. The United Methodist Church is the only Protestant denomination allowed to maintain a permanent presence in Russia. The General Board of Discipleship's Upper Room division hosted the first ever Emmaus Walk in Russia in 2008. Our funds to the World Methodist Council have made it possible for Wesleyan churches to be established in 132 countries. United Methodists gave $20.8 million to support victims of the 9/11 attacks. To date, 99% of the funds collected have been distributed with no administrative fees. The funds raised for Hurricane Katrina relief have aided 120,000 families. The 2004 tsunami relief effort was the largest ever by the United Methodist Church. These multiple examples of support to global and local missions continue to impact precious people who are in the image of God, the loving and graceful God. Thanks be to God!” Ann Conroy, Treasurer P. 2 My Life and Lesser Catastrophes: An Unflinchingly Honest Journey of Faith , by Christina Schofield. For Christina Schofield, the difference between life as she knew it and a life of fear and uncertainty was a few pebbles, as the motorcycle she and her husband were riding hit a patch of loose gravel. Thus began an emotional search for the God she thought she knew. Christina describes facing her deepest questions of faith and God's painful silence with honesty and humor, showing that even in the darkest hours, God's goodness shines through. ******************* Help Wanted: Church Custodian 20 Hours/week (A consistent four hours a day during regular office hours, Monday-Friday, 8:30-3:30 p.m.) Responsibilities include cleaning and caring for the church building. We will read the scripture passage and I will share what I know about that passage. Then I will invite you to be part of the sermon preparation process. I will ask you to tell me what you hear. How does this passage speak to you? What challenges you? What concerns you? I will be interested in the class discussion. Your insights and perspectives will help mold what I share in my sermon on Sunday. Pastor Paul FEBRUARY 2016 First United Methodist Church — Hartford, Wisconsin P. 3 UMW News Cheryl Malko, President We want to hear from you! For the past several months we have been brainstorming ideas that would make joining our UMW unit more inviting. We've discussed having fewer general meetings, inviting speakers to our general meetings and conducting most of our business at our circle meetings, partnering with the youth of our church, ordering books from the reading program that are geared to young adults, teens and children. using the church's email blasts to highlight special events, using social media to reach out to more people and getting together periodically for breakfast in the community. This year we are planning to host representatives from Exploit No More and the Greater Milwaukee Human Trafficking Workforce for an update on human trafficking in the metropolitan area. We are also planning to invite representatives from the Hartford Police Department, Washington County and HUHS to discuss the heroin outbreak in Hartford and Washington County. We're setting up a field trip to visit local farms, including the Telderer and Sterman farms. and clothes closet, senior citizens programs and community events such as Juneteenth and a Candlelight Vigil for Homicide Victims. Mac has asked that we each consider donations as follows: Donate $68 to match his age Donate $54 to match the years Northcott has served the community Donate $38 to match his years at Northcott Donate $15 to match his years as Executive Director at Northcott Please help Northcott achieve its goals to make the community a better place to live. Reading Program: My Life and Lesser Catastrophes: An Unflinchingly Honest Journey of Faith , by Christina Schofield. Please see page 2 for a description, in our book corner column, of this wonderful book. The Wisconsin UMW Conference is hosting a mission action day in Columbus where an Affordable Housing Panel will discuss homelessness . Additionally, a formally incarcerated citizen will discuss racial justice issues related to homelessness and the criminal justice system. Our goals are to keep everyone informed about the many social issues affecting our communities. We urge you to include attendance at these events on your calendars. The more we know, the more we can do to combat these problems. Upcoming Events Our question to you is "What else can our unit do to reach out to you and piqué your interest in joining United Methodist Women?" UMW is not just for "older women." It's for any woman - young and old - with an interest in putting your faith, hope and love into action for women, children and youth. Please share your suggestions with our group. They are also facing receiving less funding the Wisconsin Conference of United Methodist Churches. McArthur Weddle (Mac), Northcott's Executive Director, celebrated his 68th birthday in January. Our first Advent Luncheon was a “smashing success” as my English friend and guest, put it. This event was truly wonderful. We enjoyed beautiful music by Fourte, an interesting program on the history of the Christmas Flower, gorgeous table settings, good food and fellowship. It was a perfect combo for a wonderful outreach event. Thank you to all who attended and made everyone feel at home here at FUMC. This event would not have been so wonderful, if it had not been for all of our volunteers. Those who were table hostesses, baked cookies, donated ice cream and much more, our kitchen helpers and cleanup crew. All these volunteers helped to make this event special. We were able to raise $550 for the Community Garden to help them towards the completion of their project. Hope to see you all there next year! Many had asked me for the Chicken Recipe that was served at the luncheon, so here it is: 1-8oz pkg. chicken flavored stuffing mix- I used Uncle Bens ¼ cup butter 1-10.75oz can cream of chicken soup 1/3 cup milk 2 ½- 3 lbs. .of boneless skinless chicken breasts In a large bowl combine stuffing mix and melted butter toss well. In a medium bowl combine the soup and milk. Dip chicken into the soup mix, then into the stuffing mix, pressing with hands to coat. Place on parchment lined baking pan and back at 375 degrees until internal temp reaches 165 Degrees. Interested in being part of the Hospitality Ministry Team? We meet once a month on the 3rd Tuesday from 6:30-7:30 PM. Please come and help create a friendly and welcoming place to worship. We are also looking for a designated member to be in charge of advertising, if this is something you would be interested please contact any of our members or the office. Blessing from the Hospitality Ministry Team, Victoria Triick FEBRUARY 2016 First United Methodist Church — Hartford, Wisconsin P. 7 Youth News CHAOS and Riptide had a great start to the new year.. We started off the month on January 10th, Youth Participation Sunday. Several youth were involved in the church services. Liturgist 1st - Trevor Lucht 2nd – Emma Kaminski. Ushers 1st – Alex Albrecht, Harrison Gottfried, Britney Lane, and Olivia Carrol. 2nd - Carlie DeGroot and Allison Sutheimer. Greeters 1st – Kyle Staus, Natalie Cleland, and Bobby Klockow. 2nd – Luke Kaminski, Noah Kaminski. Media Corner 1st – Brad Wannow, 2nd - Santiago Cloud. Special music by Katie Brown, Alyssa Higley and Lizzie DeGroot as well. Later that night at youth group, Riptide did their service opportunity by making ‘Pantry meals’ to put in the church freezer. These meals are to be distributed by the church as deemed fit. A new baby, illness, or just to a family in need. Then on January 15th Chaos had their Lock-in. 20 youth and friends camped out in the youth room, starting at 7PM and going to 7AM. There was sledding, movies, karaoke, dancing, and eating. The only thing missing was the sleeping. The Chaos group also did their service opportunity by making some more frozen meals. Together the youth groups created several different meals of various sizes for the Church freezer. The meals include Baked Ziti, Enchilada casserole, chicken chili, and ham & potato casserole. On January 24th, the youth went tubing at Sunburst in Kewaskum. About 30 youth and friends took the bus to the snow hill to enjoy a fun winter event. On January 25th, the youth helped serve food at our first Culver’s 10% fundraiser night. Thank you to everyone that ate at Culver’s on that day, with your voucher. This is a quick and easy way we can have the congregation help fund the activities for youth group. We ended the month on January 31st with a movie night. This month we watched “Woodlawn”, a football movie, based on a true story that deals with race and faith. As always the youth are encouraged to bring a friend to any of our events. If you are in 6th grade or above and are interested in being a part of this great group, please join us for these upcoming actives. Please check the announcements and bulletin board for times!
