a tourist destination as well

The pleasant year-around climate draws people to
the area for boating, fishing, swimming, golf and other
outdoor activities. There are many local parks where
you can enjoy nature at its finest.
If shopping is your passion, you can find anything
from Greek curios to antiques in the downtown district
and on the popular sponge docks. You can savor a
variety of cuisine, such as authentic Greek dishes and
other ethnic favorites, fresh seafood caught in local
waters and scrumptious desserts.
Culture and history buffs will enjoy the many
opportunities the city has to offer. You can attend
plays, concerts and other productions at the performing
arts center. Several museums house displays of
historic artifacts, as well as art. No visit to the town
would be complete without a tour of the beautiful
St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Cathedral.
The Sponge
Capital of the World
The founding of the commercial
sponge industry in 1890 changed
Tarpon Springs forever. The sponge
beds were discovered accidentally in 1873
by Key West turtle fishermen whose nets
were fouled by sponges off the mouth of
the Anclote River.
Spongers moved to the area to work
the beds and in 1890 John Cheyney, a
Tarpon Springs businessman, opened
the Anclote River and Rock Island
Sponge Company. During the 1890s,
sponge packing houses were built,
sponge presses were installed, and
buyers moved to town. By 1900 the
City was considered the largest
sponge port in the United States.
It was, however, the Greek immigrants
who expanded and refined sponging in
Tarpon Springs. John Corcoris, who arrived
in Tarpon in 1896 as a sponge buyer for a New
York firm, was responsible for the Greek
involvement. John Cheyney financed his early
efforts to make the industry more efficient. In 1905
Corcoris introduced the first mechanized sponge
fishing boat to Tarpon Springs and brought in 500
divers from Greece. Other Greeks soon followed
and established businesses to serve the Greek
community, including restaurants, candy
shops, coffee houses and grocery stores.

Sponge Dock area, it seems as if you’ve
been transported to Greece. Strings of
natural sponges sway in the breeze and the
sights, sounds and sensuous aromas of an
authentic Greek village fill the air.
Restaurants and bakeries beckon with
genuine Greek and Mediterranean dishes.
Quaint shops line the streets offering
everything from natural sponges harvested
locally to elegant clothing, accessories,
swimwear, jewelry, and shells.
Sponge diving exhibitions tell the fascinating
history of this important industry. Deepsea
fishing and cruise excursions depart
regularly from the docks.

Discover Treasures
on the Sponge Docks
The Tarpon Springs Sponge Dock area offers a wide variety of
services that can help you explore the area’s natural environment.
Several marinas serve the needs of boaters with maintenance, fuel,
boat storage, docking and rentals. The City operates its own marina
with prime boat slips.
Multiple boats offer group deepsea fishing
charters as well as private charters. Scuba
charters and rentals are also available.
Greek Culture
If you’re looking for a guided ecological education, tours range from
a sponge diving exhibition boat ride to econature tours of the river,
bayous and Gulf of Mexico. A local aquarium offers you a chance to
view sharks and alligators close up and hand-feed stingrays.
No other city in the United States has a higher percentage of residents of Greek heritage than
Tarpon Springs. An array of everyday activities and special events exemplify this rich culture. It
is expressed in the sponge docks, Greek Town, St. Nicholas Cathedral, occupations, music and
dance, social organizations, family values and religious practices.
The Greek Orthodox Church plays a pivotal role in the community by sustaining religious
traditions. Whether expressed through iconography, architecture, chanting, vestments, or ritual,
beauty in the expression of the divine is an important aspect of the religion.
The Greek community has kept alive its rich variety of native music – traditional and popular,
much of which can be heard in the local bistros and at the festivals held throughout the year. Both
classical (Byzantine chanting) and folk, which varies regionally in style and instrumentation make
up the traditional styles. Today’s popular music reflects influences from Europe and America.

(January 6), commemorating
Jesus’ baptism in the River
Jordan, is the largest in

Greek Orthodox Cathedral.
Afterwards, altar boys lead a
procession to Spring Bayou,
followed by church and
City officials, dance troupes
in colorful costumes and
divers. The priest blesses the
waters, then casts a white
cross into the bayou. About
fifty youths dive from a semicircle of dinghies. When a
lucky young man finds the
cross, he is carried on his
friends’ shoulders back to
the Cathedral to be blessed.
Finally, there is a glendi with
food, dancing and music.

Visitors will find brick sidewalks lined with
trees, benches and nostalgic street lamps.
Vintage turn-of-the-century buildings now house
antique shops, boutiques, art galleries, cafes,
bed and breakfast inns and an assortment
of specialty shops.
Downtown restaurants include several chef owned
cafes serving everything for the palate from seafood,
steaks, traditional greek favorites, and their own
unique house specialties. (For area restaurant

You can learn about the area’s
history at the restored Railroad Depot

described by MichaelJohn Targakis, who has
given an insider’s view of the waterside city
since he was a child. When his family came
from the Greek Islands to the Gulf of Mexico,
it was the “Venice of the South.” With similar
scenery and a European essence, the
picturesque, lively community is still home
to his extended family, which he said is ”the
largest gathering of Greek Americans
in the country.”

Tarpon Springs has a variety of cuisine choices to satisfy any
gourmet’s taste buds. You can enjoy the best Greek food outside
of Athens and sample one of the local specialties – Greek Potato
Salad. To finish off your meal you don’t want to pass up the
fabulous assortment of desserts.
Other ethnic choices include Italian, Continental, Thai and Jamaican.
Seafood, caught locally is another favorite. A number of other

1915 City Hall building has been fully restored and houses a
theater, gallery space and a museum shop. Its Center for Gulf

The Safford House was originally the home of Anson P.K.
Safford, one of the original founders of Tarpon Springs.
Constructed in 1883, it is a fine example of late 19th century
Florida vernacular Victorian architecture. Owned by the City, the
Safford House is totally restored and filled with furnishings original

The Leepa-Ratner Museum of Art at the Tarpon Springs
campus of St. Petersburg College contains outstanding examples
of 20th and 21st century art. Just minutes from downtown Tarpon
Springs and the Sponge Docks it is north Pinellas County’s premier
art museum. You can attend lectures and special events here, as

Prior to the arrival of the Orange Belt Railroad in 1887, Tarpon
Springs could only be reached by boat or an arduous wagon trip.
Once the train began regular service to Tarpon Springs, the City
began to grow at a much faster pace. The Train Depot Museum
that exists today was built in 1909 and served as the transportation
and communication hub of the city for many years. The City of
Tarpon Springs owns and maintains the depot, while the Historical
Society operates it as a museum and Visitor Center.

Highland Nature Park is a small park focusing
on natural Florida foliage. Visit this unspoiled

North Anclote Nature Park comprised of 77

Tarpon Springs is well-known for its abundant fish
population, featuring the diversity of Florida’s famous
game fish. You can fish from numerous places such
as the bridge on South Pinellas Avenue over the
Anclote River, Fred Howard Park, Sunset Beach,
Spring Bayou, and numerous other bridges, piers
and boardwalks.

Head to one of Tarpon Springs pristine beaches

All year, our sightseeing boat trips take you by
the plethora of birds, animals and lush vegetation
that make Tarpon Springs an oasis in the middle
of civilization. A couple of the boats go to Anclote
Island in the Gulf where you can visit the lighthouse
and look for shells on the beach. These cruises last
anywhere from 30 minutes to two hours.
Fred Howard Park is a 150-acre county park with
a mile long causeway connecting the immaculate
offshore white sandy beach with the mainland.
A wooded retreat combined with a sunbather’s
paradise, it offers sheltered pavilions, playgrounds,
fishing, windsurfing, public restrooms and
beach showers.

Fun for Everyone
For the active-minded, Tarpon
Springs offers something for
everyone. Boating, fishing,
swimming and scuba diving
are just a few of the activities
you can pursue on the water.
If you want to stay on dry land, the Pinellas Trail,
designed for walking, running, skate-boarding and
biking, is a great way to get exercise and fresh air.
You can pick it up at Tarpon Avenue and Safford
Avenue by the Historic Train Depot. Adjacent to
the Pinellas Trail on Live Oak Street is a children’s
Splash Park. Just two blocks away, in Craig Park
on Spring Bayou, you’ll find tennis, shuffleboard
and handball courts as well as a playground.
The Fitness Park at the corner of Safford Avenue
and Live Oak Street features nine stations of adult
fitness equipment. It is a great amenity to the
Pinellas Trail and a perfect spot for a trailhead
for cyclists, runners, and fitness enthusiasts.
Golfers will enjoy any one of five golf courses
in the area. Local courses include the Tarpon
Springs Municipal Course, Innisbrook Resort &
Golf Club, Crescent Oaks Country Club, Cypress
Run Golf Club and Wentworth Golf Club.

Tarpon Springs Recreation Center – A Hub of Activity
Article submitted by Craig Dolan – Recreation Superintendent, City of Tarpon Springs
The Tarpon Springs Community Center is
located at 400 S Walton Avenue. We have a full
size gymnasium, game room, fitness room, art
room, conference room, multi-purpose rooms
and kitchen. Cost for a resident of Tarpon
Springs age18 and over is only $5 a year. Any
child residing in Tarpon Springs can receive a
recreation card for free.
Programs range from fitness to arts and crafts.
Some of our fitness activities include Jazzercise,
Cardio Kickboxing, Vinyasa Yoga, and Tai Chi.
We have card games, such as duplicate bridge
and mahjong. For the children we have Young
Rembrandts, a step-by-step drawing program.
Is your child interested in dancing, but you
are not interested in a full dance studio? We
have the programs for you. Two new dance
programs at the Community Center are hip
hop & modern jazz and tap.

The spiritual lives of local residents
are served by a variety of churches and

St Nicholas Greek Orthodox Cathedral,

interest to visitors are:
St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Cathedral is
an impressive Byzantine Revival Cathedral
patterned after St. Sophia in Istanbul. The
cathedral features twenty-three unique
stained glass windows, three massive
Czechoslovakian glass chandeliers,
traditional Byzantine style icons and
sixty tons of Greek marble.
The Shrine of St. Michael is a small chapel
at 113 Hope Street built by a Greek family in

Tarpon Springs offers many excellent schools that promote a well-rounded education. From Pre-K
to college, the area schools are some of the best in the county. There are three elementary schools,
one middle school, one high school and one college.
Tarpon Springs High School, rated an “A”
school since 2012 allows students to choose
from a wide variety of academic and elective
courses. These include a Veterinary Science
Academy and Jacobson Culinary Arts

Conservatory for the Arts is a world-class
learning center of excellence, integrating
leadership skills, the performing arts, rigorous
academics, and technology. In 2014 its band
was named Grand National performing
Bands Champion.
St. Petersburg College (SPC) Tarpon Springs
campus, conveniently located at US Highway
19 and Klosterman Road, is nationally
recognized for excellence in education. The
school offers a two-year Associate in Arts
degree and a Baccalaureate program with many
degree options. You can also earn Bachelor’s,
Master’s and Doctorate degrees through their
University Partnership Center. SPC also offers
more than sixty certificate programs, each
program providing hands-on experience in a
specific field.
The campus is also home to the Leepa-Rattner
Museum of Art, Fine Arts Education Center,
and the M.M. Bennett Library complex. An
amphitheater offers a natural, Greek-style
setting for cultural events.

A Great City for Business
Whether you have a manufacturing plant or are looking for the

Tarpon Springs currently offers more than 230 acres of
industrial-zoned land ready to be developed into light manufacturing
and distribution. Its proximity to US Highway 19 makes it ideal land

According to Karen Lemmons, Economic Development Manager
for the City of Tarpon Springs, “we encourage business
development by creating opportunities for growth, including
incentives through the Community Redevelopment Area, in which
the City offers façade and restaurant recruitment grants.“
Lemmons continues, “We have streamlined the permitting
and review process for development projects and have made
several code changes to reduce costs and burdens for new
business developments.”
In the coming year, Lemmons concludes, “the City will be focusing
on infrastructure improvements in the southern gateway area...
specifically, the extension of Meres Boulevard to US 19. This
roadway extension creates an important hurricane evacuation
route, provides more direct access from US 19 for Florida Hospital
North Pinellas and opens development opportunity for available
land in the South Pinellas gateway. The City also is partnering with
Pinellas County on a comprehensive strategy for the North Anclote
industrial area.”

The City Commission holds public meetings on the first and
third Tuesdays of each month 6:30 p.m. in City Hall, located at
324 East Pine Street. These sessions are televised on the local
public service cable channel and citizens are allowed
to address the commission, as well.
Tarpon Springs has its own local police department and fire
department that also provides emergency medical services.
Homestead Exemption
Homeowners whose Florida home is their primary residence
are entitled to a homestead exemption of up to $50,000 on that
property’s assessment. The application filing deadline is March
1. New residents must file in person. The most convenient filing

Once known as the “Venice of the South,” Tarpon
Springs was named for the abundant fish found
off its coast. This oldest city in Pinellas County is
located along the Anclote River where it intersects
with the Gulf of Mexico.

THE EARLIEST INHABITANTS…Over 5,000
years ago Tarpon Springs attracted Native Americans
because of its rich and diverse environment. Settling
by the shore near the mouth of the Anclote River,
they buried their dead in earthen mounds along with
elaborate pottery and other goods. The Safford Mound,
discovered in the late 1800s, contained more than 600
skeletons and a wide variety of pottery illustrating
the life style and culture of these prehistoric people.
Artifacts from these first inhabitants can be seen at the
Tarpon Springs Heritage Museum.
THE BIRTH OF A CITY…In 1876 A.W. Ormond of
South Carolina and his teenage daughter Mary became
the first settlers of Tarpon Springs, building a cabin
near Spring Bayou. One year later, Joshua Boyer
arrived and docked his sloop near the Ormond cabin.
He built a second cabin and married young Mary. It
was Mary who in 1879 proposed their tiny two-cabin
settlement be named Tarpon Springs after the giant
tarpon that jumped and splashed in the bayou.
THE FOUNDING FATHERS…With Florida on the
edge of bankruptcy in 1881, Hamilton Disston, a wealthy
Philadelphia manufacturer rescued the state with one
of the biggest real estate deals ever. Disston was
responsible for surveying the area that became Tarpon
Springs and planning the City’s layout, as well as
convincing the railroad to come to the new community.
The true founder of the town and its leading citizen was
Anson Safford, an investor in Disston’s enterprises.
THE GOLDEN CRESCENT…Most of Tarpon
Springs’ earliest development occurred around Spring
Bayou. The Victorian era residences that line the
banks of the bayou today are vestiges of the town’s
development as a winter resort community. The area
is called the Golden Crescent because of the crescent
like shape of the bayou and the wealth of its early
developers. The fresh water spring that flows, once
known for its healing waters, is now a prime spot for
manatee watching.
