Last night in New York, the film legend Robert De Niro was honored at the Tribeca Ball benefiting the New York Academy of Art. The party, which was hosted at the academy, drew big-name guests like the actress Mary-Kate Olsen, the singer Solange Knowles, the global C.E.O. of Chanel Maureen Chiquet and the restaurateur Michael Chow, all of whom chatted amid the school’s impressive art collection, as models wearing jewelry by Van Cleef & Arpels, the event’s sponsor, walked about. But never mind the A-list attendees, the night — the proceeds from which will go toward scholarships for the academy’s artists and funding for its programs — was all about “Bob.” A look back at his esteemed career was in order, so T asked partygoers to name their favorite De Niro flick (it’s harder than you think): MEDIA COVERAGE TRIBECA BALL 2012 Robert De Niro at the New York Academy of Art's 2012 Tribeca Ball by Janelle Zara Published: April 17, 2012 After the death of his abstract expressionist father, actor Robert De Niro made a point to preserve Robert De Niro Sr.’s studio and to prominently display his artwork on the walls of the Tribeca Grill, the restaurant the actor opened in 1990. “His devotion to the arts is probably the thing people know least about him,” New York Academy of Art chair Eileen Guggenheim told ARTINFO. Last night, the Academy honored De Niro’s dedication and support of the arts in TriBeCa at its annual ball, the glamorous, star-‐studded fundraiser to provide scholarships for rising artists. Inspired by Van Cleef & Arpels’s Bals de Legende collection (the company sponsored the evening), the Academy’s event was a six-‐story veritable playground of open studios, masquerades, and performance art. In between perusing the students’ paintings, sculptures, and installations, guests posed in framed photo booths as Magritte’s “The Son of Man” – complete with top hat and apple – and as Frida Kahlo, donning flowered headbands and black shawls. The sounds of various live artists, including a dead ringer for Marie Antoinette playing a neon accordion, filled the space. Navigating the narrow maze of the artists’ studios, partygoers brushed past committee members of the A-‐list variety – including Liev Schreiber with a tiny, texting Naomi Watts in tow, Jeff Koons, Will Cotton, and Kim Catrall – and squeezed through a bevy of masked, monochromatic lycra-‐clad models decked out in Van Cleef & Arpels precious gems. The new collage consists of photos of the couple’s two children, he said, and then revealed his artistic process: “You make a collage first, and then you sort of do pastels over it, then you do a wash. You just make it as messy as you possibly can,” he said. “And put a really fancy frame on ’em and they think it’s good.” Just days ago, Cattrall sat tohe have painted artist Sandro Kopp, ofwho in Ball. Jeff Koons reminisced about his early days in the art world, and the excitement of actually selling his work. “I remember that Patrick Lannan, the collector—he was from I.T.T.—bought my first vacuum-cleaner piece, my first Hoover,” Koons told Vanity Fair. “And he told me, ‘By the way, Jeff, I used to go door-to-door selling them.’” MEDIA COVERAGE TRIBECA BALL 2012 "I think the world is going to be really shocked," said model Jessica White of her forthcoming debut album, which she was eager to discuss at last night's New York Academy of Art Tribeca Ball. She describes the music as "more of a soulful pop" and says she's been recording with producer Ryan Leslie. "I’m a lot more creative than people can imagine," she continued. "This year, they’re gonna get a big huge handful of how creative I really am." More details: How does your modeling background affect your music career? I’m a poet first and foremost, before the modeling. I mean, modeling, it’s being an artist as well. It’s just being a silent artist. It takes a lot of self-‐control and a lot of discipline. What's your writing process like? I’m a bat. All my greatest, creative ideas come at night. So I hardly ever sleep. Will there be guest stars on your album? Oh yeah, a lot. But I don’t want to say who. I want everybody to be surprised. This is huge. I’m using a live band to record the whole entire album. And I’m producing a lot of it and writing my own material. So I think the world is going to be really shocked. We don’t know when it’s coming out. Right now I’m just creating. http://nymag.com/daily/fashion/2012/04/jessica-‐white-‐im-‐a-‐poet-‐first-‐and-‐foremost.html MEDIA COVERAGE TRIBECA BALL 2012 MEDIA COVERAGE TRIBECA BALL 2012 MEDIA COVERAGE TRIBECA BALL 2012 Eileen Guggenheim, David Kratz Virgine and Nicolas Bos Alison Sarofim Robert De Niro Glenda Bailey Dreana De Niro MEDIA COVERAGE TRIBECA BALL 2012 http://guestofaguest.com/new-york/party-crasher/last-nights-parties-the-new-york-academy-of-art-2012-tribecaball-and-marc-jacobs-urban-hoedown MEDIA COVERAGE TRIBECA BALL 2012 Apr 17, 2012 @ 2:50 pm http://news.instyle.com/2012/04/17/celebrity-‐couples-‐night-‐out-‐see-‐the-‐photos/ MEDIA COVERAGE TRIBECA BALL 2012 MEDIA COVERAGE TRIBECA BALL 2012 Solange Knowles was spotted at the Tribeca Ball 2012. For the occasion, she went for a sheer printed shirt and high-‐waist pants with printed trim down the sides: Solange loves mixed prints and she is rocking them here in a great way. Only thing I would change is the coral eyeshadow: I think the bright lip is enough. What do you think? Hot! or Hmm…? http://fashionbombdaily.com/2012/04/17/hot-‐or-‐hmm-‐solange-‐knowles-‐at-‐the-‐tribeca-‐ball-‐2012/ MEDIA COVERAGE TRIBECA BALL 2012 "I have ridden a lot of bulls in my day," said filmmaker Casey Neistat as he arrived at the Art Production Fund's annual hoedown last night. But at the event, honoring artist Kiki Smith, art dealer and adviser Mark Fletcher, and Sotheby's auctioneer Tobias Meyer, the bull was mechanical—a no-go for Neistat. "If it's not going to put me in danger," he said, adjusting the brim of his cowboy hat, "I don't want to ride it." Though it was lacking live animals, Yvonne Force Villareal and Doreen Remen's bash had all the other makings of a genuine country hoedown, with hay on the ground, a family-style BBQ spread for dinner, and a room full of cowboys and -girls (Steven Klein, Tara Subkoff, Erin Wasson, Michael Stipe, and Lake Bell among them). Not everyone received the chaps-and-boots memo. While Michelle Harper admired Giovanna Battaglia and Vladimir Restoin-Roitfeld's all-in getups, she said, "I am party-hopping tonight, so I had to go more classic. Personally, I am over wearing themed outfits—I feel like chic always wins. Can you imagine if I tried to ride the bull in this?" Farther south, art was being celebrated in Tribeca, too—along with a newly minted doctor of arts. Robert De Niro was the honoree at the New York Academy of Art's annual Tribeca Ball, where he accepted an honorary doctorate in front of guests like Naomi Watts, Damian Loeb, Jeff Koons, and Roxanne Lowit. "My parents would be so proud," he said— perhaps, especially, his painter father. The night was a hot one—literally. Unseasonable summerlike weather had guests huddling around the occasional AC as they roamed the school's five floors and checked out student work, but not everyone minded the tropical conditions. "I like it hot and humid," said Nora Zehetner, who was appropriately clad in a wispy Calvin Klein slipdress. "I've always thought there was something sexy about the hot nights in New York. But then again, I grew up in Dallas." From artists to martial artists…Ultimate Fighting Championship contender Rashad Evans was the guest of honor at a spring dinner Reed Krakoff held at the Crown restaurant MEDIA COVERAGE TRIBECA BALL 2012 MEDIA COVERAGE TRIBECA BALL 2012 The Tribeca Ball is one of the biggest parties of the year, bringing out guests a mix of celebs, fashion people and art types like Bill Clinton, Justin Timberlake, Rachel Roy, Fabiola Beracasa and Eileen Guggenheim (in years past). This year, the event brought together a curious crew with some particularly curious fashion statements. There were the simple styles, like Naomi Watts in an peplumed LBD and Julianna Margulies in a sleek black gown. Then there were the glamour girls, like Jessica White dripping in gold and Carla Gugino in fire-‐engine red. And then there were the surprises. We're not sure what dress code Kim Cattrall was following when she showed up looking ready for an office party, in a black pants, a white shirt and a electric blue blazer. Certainly not the same one as Helena Christensen, who donned a floral-‐trimmed gown with puffy short-‐sleeves. Between the black lace cami poking out of the neckline and her tiny shoulder-‐bag, something about the outfit felt very 2003. And then there was Paz de la Huerta, who never disappoints, as well as Solange Knowles making like her sister in patterned pants. The artist led his wife as they looked intently at student pieces. “I’ve been looking,” Mr. Koons told The Observer, “and I’m coming back to buy something. These are wonderful works–and very accomplished. There’s art here–it’s wonderful to see young people focusing on their craft.” Speaking of young people focusing on their craft, we asked Mr. Koons about the subject of the day–the previous night’s premiere of Girls on HBO. The series had been written, directed, and created by the 25year-old Lena Dunham, daughter of Mr. Koons’s fellow downtown artists Laurie Simmons and Carroll Dunham. “What is that?” asked Mr. Koons. “It’s a program on television?” We explained the series’s provenance, and that of its young creator. “Well, Tip and Dunham are wonderful,” he told us. “I’ve known them for years. And I’ve met their daughter before. Wonderful. My wife probably knows about it. I’ll look for the program.” We await his recap. http://www.velvetroper.com/2012/04/jeff-‐koons-‐hasnt-‐heard-‐of-‐girls/ MEDIA COVERAGE TRIBECA BALL 2012 http://www.paddle8.com/forgood/nyaa_tribeca_ball MEDIA COVERAGE TRIBECA BALL 2012 The Fab Life has photos of celebrities at last night’s Tribeca Ball, the annual event at the New York Academy of Art. I was invited to the cocktail portion of the evening, and I didn’t see anyone famous, but I’m really bad at that, so maybe I did. And I wimped out on taking photos because how can you take photos and hold a glass of wine? I did manage the three you see here: an excellent pair of shoes that was in front of me in line (I still wonder how many guests thought the giant inflatable rat across Franklin Street was a piece of art), a performer dressed à la Madame X (at one point she lip-‐synched “Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend”), and dioramas where you could pose next to a living artwork. I should’ve photographed guests—the fashion was major—but sometimes you just want to enjoy yourself, you know? Next year, if they invite me again, I’ll do it. http://tribecacitizen.com/2012/04/17/in-‐the-‐news-‐the-‐tribeca-‐ball/ MEDIA COVERAGE TRIBECA BALL 2012 E AG ER OV TC EN EV EPR http://www.nytimes.com/2012/04/12/fashion/a-‐preview-‐of-‐this-‐weeks-‐must-‐attend-‐parties.html?_r=1 Wednesday 04-Apr-2012 Five floors of open studios, More than 100 up and coming art stars, Champagne and Live Entertainment WHO: Honoree Robert DeNiro, Co-Chairs Glenda Bailey, Virginie & Nicolas Bos, Allison Sarofim and Stuart Parr, New York Academy of Art Chair Eileen Guggenheim, and Academy President David Kratz will be joined by Benefit Committee members Michael Kors, Julianna Margulies, Bob Colacello, John Demsey, Sotheby’s Lisa Dennison, Tiffany Dubin, Mary Kate Olsen, Andrew Saffir and Daniel Benedict, and Arden Wohl.
