Plainfield’s 92nd Annual Central
Jersey July 4th Parade:
HOPES Brings Home Trophy!
HOPES CAP, Inc. participated in Plainfield’s 92nd
Annual Central Jersey Fourth of July Parade for
the first time. The theme for this year’s parade
was Diversity in Action. In keeping with the
theme, some of the HOPES CAP, Inc. Head
Start and Early Head Start children and parents
dressed in native clothing representing their
country.
The parade was well attended by residents of
Plainfield and surrounding areas.
There were
floats, marching bands, drill teams, music bands,
and more.
Over sixty children, parents, staff,
alumni, and governing body members participated in this event. Some of the participants
walked while others rode the float. All spectators
could hear the loud praises, chants, and yelling
for HOPES’ program. HOPES CAP, Inc. won
the “Best Professional Float” trophy. The well
decorated float was designed by the Plainfield
family advocates and children.

Hoboken. Residents of the area and beyond were offered free health screenings such as lead,
blood sugar, HIV screenings as well as pap smears, breast exams, provided by Hoboken Family
Planning. In addition, many other community partners helped to make the event a success by

HOPES receives 1st Place HUB Grant to Support the “Like A Boss Teen
Entrepreneur Program”
HOPES applied for a Department of Community Affairs and HUB (Holistic Urban Building) Grant and was
initially selected as one of three award recipients. On September 23, each recipient was required to pitch their
concept to investors, educators and HUB personnel at a networking/pitch event held at the Trenton Museum.
Dominique Tornabe, Community Education Manager, presented the pitch: “we are so excited for the continued
growth of the Like A Boss program and delighted to announce we won first place, receiving $15,000.00 to ensure
long lasting impacts of this program.”
HOPES has operated the “Like A Boss” Teens and Digital Media Entrepreneurship Program since 2012. The
program empowers economically disadvantaged youth in Hudson County with opportunities to learn alongside
accomplished mentors and develop STEAM-based 21st century skills that promote college and career readiness.
This existing program is consistent with the Holistic Urban Building (HUB) mission to provide technical
assistance, training, mentoring, creative approaches to problem-solving, community growth and scalability.
Participating youth learn from accomplished entrepreneurs and innovators as they conceptualize socio-conscious
business models that benefit neighborhood and community. They develop critical thinking, computer, and
entrepreneurial skills that support optimal life outcomes and promote deeper reflection on ways to build
communities with locally-driven solutions.

Dads Bring their Children to School Day!
On September 16th, HOPES celebrated “Dad Bring your Child to School Day” at
all HOPES sites. Over 80 father figures were eager to bring their children to school
and spend some quality time with them at HOPES’ different sites. Those that
participated included brothers, fathers, uncles, grandfathers and a few moms. All
were excited to accompany their children to class. The children enjoyed the activities
everyone participated in and they were so proud of being at school with their
families! Thanks to all the family and staff
participating and making this day such a success!
Thank you for being
involved!

HOPES Fundraiser at Houlihans in Weehawken!
A good time was had by all who attended HOPES’
fundraising event at Houlihan’s on August 31st.
Following an agency-wide professional development
day, HOPES staff, board, community partners and
friends made their to Houlihan’s Restaurant located
in Weehawken, NJ for good food, fun and a worthy
cause! Houlihan’s recently started fundraiser nights
called "Dine to Donate" as a way of giving back to
the community.
Participating organizations have an opportunity to
select a specific day to hold their fundraising event
and promote it to their staff, customers and community partners. Ten percent of the sales are given back
to the organization if the event raises less than
$1,000 and 15% if $1,000 or more is raised. HOPES
participants raised $1,171, which put us at 15% over
the threshold. It was a fun evening for all who attended!
A good time was had by all!
We appreciate HOPES’ staff and supporters who
took the time out of their busy schedules to have a
night of fun and also raise money for a worthy
cause!
