Brauer w Written by Jasmine Van Den Bogaerde and Dan Wilson w Published by Good Soldier Songs, Administered by Warner Chappell Music Ltd./Sugar Lake Music (ASCAP) w Courtesy of Atlantic Records UK π 2014 Jasmine Van Den Bogaerde under exclusive license to Warner Music UK Limited One of my closest friends died of Stage IV lung cancer just before I made my first film, “Stuck in Love.” M83’s “Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming” had just been released and I vividly remember driving to the hospital every night to visit him that fall and playing “Wait” on repeat as loud as I could crank it. My friend’s name was Geoff Cooper and he owned a record store in Burbank called DB Cooper’s for over fifteen years. He gave me a job and for seven years we listened to records together and obsessed over music. Near the end, when he was moved back home to hospice, I spent many hours playing his favorite songs for him. I was his deathbed DJ, and at the end of his life, it was music that made him the happiest. The first time I really dealt emotionally with Geoff’s death was months later when I read John Green’s masterful book. When I met with producers Wyck Godfrey and Isaac Klausner, music was something I talked about a lot. I remember giving them a thumb drive packed with potential songs for the film - some of it ended up in there (M83, The Radio Dept.) and others revealed themselves to us during editing. I was aided in my quest to create the perfect soundtrack by genius music supervisor Season Kent (who dances every single time “Boom Clap” comes on), and Fox Music’s incredibly collaborative Patrick Houlihan and Areli Quirarte. I also want to mention my friend and first assistant editor, Greg Borkman, who put Kodaline’s “All I Want” in the movie. Music is the heart and soul of “The Fault in Our Stars.” I was incredibly lucky to have Mike Mogis and Nate Walcott of Bright Eyes score the film (they scored my first as well) and for all the wonderful artists who wrote or lent us songs to help tell Hazel and Gus’s story. I still find myself parking out front of Geoff’s house in Burbank every now and then listening to music. He was a great supporter of mine and one of the finest human beings I’ve ever known. It was a privilege to know him. I think he would have liked “Fault” very much. I know he would have loved the music.
