Please Pray For - St Michael Parish
www.saintmike.com Facebook: St. Michael Parish Orland Park 14327 Highland Ave., Orland Park 708-349-0903 Voice of Saint Michael November 16, 2014 From Your Pastor As you know, I have been asking for your response to my renovation ideas. Many of you have written or sent e-mails or talked to me by phone or after Mass in the narthex. From what I have heard thus far, I am grateful for your reflections and affirmations and the trust you place in me. A number of you have shared some thoughts and perspectives that I did not consider. So, thank you for this ongoing dialogue. Today I would like to share with you the leadership groups with whom I meet on a regular basis. Twice a month I meet with the members of my Pastoral Staff. We spend time together in prayer and personal sharing before we “talk business.” By meeting twice a month on a Tuesday afternoon, my hope is that we will facilitate working together in serving all the ministries that are part of Saint Michael parish. Once a month I meet with the rest of my Pastoral Staff, the deacons and their wives. Our format is similar to what the rest of the Pastoral Staff does when they gather. Some of our deacons and their wives have jobs and so all of us can only meet in the evening. These Deacon Couples give me a unique perspective that helps me in serving you as pastor. In my 42 years as a priest, I have always had deacons in my parishes. Their ministry is a true blessing and gift. Once a month I meet with the members of the Parish Pastoral Council. They give me the perspective of “life from the pews.” They try to discern Jesus’ vision for this parish and to bring all the ministries together for the sake of unity. The PPC has been recently re-organized and re-defined. They have five Commissions that include all the ministries of our parish. (There can be no “lone rangers” in ministry). Soon the PPC will have their first gathering with all the Commissions. More about that will come later. By the way, I have always had a Pastoral Council in the three parishes where I have served as pastor, and would never even think about not having a PPC. Once a month I meet with the School Advisory Board. These people help the principal, Mrs. Cuttone and myself do what is necessary to keep our school Catholic and vibrant. Once a month I meet with the members of the Finance Committee who help our business manager, Mrs. Pietrzak and myself think through all our fiscal challenges and demands. According to the guidelines of the Archdiocese of Chicago, all these groups – Parish Council, School Board and Finance Committee – serve in an advisory capacity. With the help of all these people, I think I get a fairly good sense of the pulse of this parish. They help me see and listen and understand and decide. Of course, all of this – and I mean ALL of this – is surrounded and uplifted in prayer. Please help us by keeping us in prayer. -Fr. Paul 2 Voice of Saint Michael November 16, 2014 3 Voice of Saint Michael November 16, 2014 TAKING THE SUNDAY SCRIPTURE HOME Give thanks to god! There is a small but powerful connection between the readings today. The description of the virtuous woman in the reading from Proverbs shows what it means to be the good and faithful servant that Jesus talks about in the parable in the gospel. How the good woman lives her life—humbly serving the poor and those in need—speaking wisely and showing kindness to everyone—shows us how we are to live. The servant in the gospel parable is also credited with being wise. He used his master’s money judiciously. In this gospel, the word money is interchanged with the word talent. Through this parable, Jesus is telling us that we should use our talents wisely, too. Not just our money, but everything that God has given us. Today’s readings inspire us to live like the woman and the servant, but we know that we are called to take it a step further. We are being called to live not like them, but like Christ himself so that his presence shines through us. How am I like the worthy woman this week? How am I like the faithful servant in the gospel? How am I Christ-like? All parishioners, family and friends are invited to gather and celebrate the Eucharist on Thanksgiving morning. NOVEMBER 27TH THANKSGIVING DAY LITURGIES 8:00 A.M. 10:00 A.M. Top Picture: Veterans’ Day Mass 2014 at St. Michael Parish 5 Voice of Saint Michael November 16, 2014 A s we approach this beautiful season of Christmas, we delight, once again, in our ability to bring joy to others through gift giving. Every year at this time, a spirit of excitement and generosity permeate our Narthex as people choose ornaments from the Sharing Tree. There are exclamations of surprise and amazement when everyone enters Church and sees the array of gifts that have been delivered here; there is a sense of awe that such generosity exists among our parishioners. We are a blessed people, and we bless others with our goodness. Once again, the Christmas Sharing Tree will be located in the Narthex beginning November 22. On the tree are numerous Chr istmas or nament tags with specific gift information for a person in need. We invite you to: Select an ornament from the Sharing Tree. Buy the gift requested on the tag. Some tags have several choices. You may choose what to give. Do not wrap the gift unless specified on the tag. TAPE THE TAG securely to the outside of the gift. If you are giving a gift card, please place it in the collection basket. Return the gifts to the sanctuary of the Church when you come in for Mass. There will be people to assist you. All gift s mu st b e return ed on the weekend of Decemb er 6 & 7. They will b e deli vered on Monday, December 8. This year you will notice that there are many gift cards on the tree. We realize this isn’t as much fun for you if you want to purchase a gift, but the children who receive the card do something they do not often have the opportunity to do—buy something they would really like to have for themselves. We are told that they get very excited to be able to choose from a number of their wishes. May God fill your hearts and home with joy this Christmas Season. Thank you for your generosity and goodness. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
