Make a prediction: What do you think will happen to all the land the Ottoman Empire had to give up in the Middle East after losing WWI? Please make sure to answer #9 before moving on to the next slide. The End of the Ottoman Empire By the end of World War I (1914-1918), the Allied Powers (such as France, Britain, the U.S., and Italy) had won. The Ottoman Empire found itself on the losing side. As a result, it also lost most of it’s territory except the modern day country of Turkey. Some of the Allied Powers divided control of the former Ottoman Empire among themselves in what was known as the “San Remo Agreement”. Look at the “San Remo Agreement 1920” map on the next slide. Find 2 foreign countries (countries outside of the Middle East) that increased their power in the Middle East after the decline of the Ottoman Empire. 10. Name these 2 foreign countries AND the areas in the Middle East that they controlled. The Mandate System After World War I ended in 1918, certain territories were taken from the defeated nations and placed under the control of one or more of the victorious nations. These areas were called mandated territories. The League of Nations, a forerunner of the United Nations (UN), supervised the governing countries’ control of the mandated territories. The League expected the governing countries to improve living conditions in the mandated territories, and to prepare the people for self-government. The United Kingdom received mandates for Mesopotamia (later renamed Iraq); and Palestine. Palestine was later divided into Palestine and Transjordan (later renamed Jordan). France received Syria, which was later divided into Syria and Lebanon. The mandate system ended in 1947. By that time, several mandated territories, including Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, and Jordan, had become independent countries. Look at the map to the right. 11. What was the modern-day country of Israel called in under the Mandate System? 12. Who controlled this mandated area after the fall of the Ottoman Empire? 13. Make a prediction: What happens when the British Mandate of Palestine ends? Explain in 3 sentences. Hints: The area of Palestine is now called by a different name. What do you think happened? Use the map and link on the next slide to help you. http://www.mapsofwar.com/images/Religion.swf The End of the Ottoman Empire, but its territory is still fought over even today, which is our next topic. . .
