The company’s mission is to produce and present musical theater from a variety of world traditions. Such works include American and Continental operettas, classic American musical theater, as well as contemporary fare. Since its inaugural season in 1981, LIGHT OPERA WORKS continues to be a leader in the United States for the presentation of these historically important and theatrically delightful works of art in productions similar in size and scope to their originals, in modern productions with professional artists and full orchestra. Other programs include musical theater workshops for young performers ages 8 to 18, and small concert performances throughout the Chicago area. LIGHT OPERA WORKS is a member of the Illinois Arts Alliance, League of Chicago Theatres, National Alliance for Musical Theatre, the Evanston and Wilmette Chambers of Commerce and Chicago’s North Shore Convention and Visitors Bureau. For a listing of LIGHT OPERA WORKS’ repertoire, and information about past productions, visit our website at www.LightOperaWorks.com. Other Banks Have Branches Here, We Have Our Roots.™ Welcome to SOUTH PACIFIC! I first staged this great classic for Light Opera Works in 2006; revisiting in 2015 has been a truly eye-opening experience. When you work on a show several times over your career, it can sometimes feel as if you’re working on a museum piece. Not this time! Something about this cast, for the most part a new generation of young performers, has helped me to look at this material with fresh eyes and fewer preconceived ideas. The themes of prejudice, racism and war that are at the heart of SOUTH PACIFIC seem to have a greater weight today than I remember in past productions. Our daily news is never without stories of the war on terror and our nation’s continuing struggle with racism; seeing our young cast relate the struggles of their characters to the challenges that face their own world has been truly inspiring to me. It’s been wonderful too to have Larry Adams and Yvonne Strumecki back as Emile and Bloody Mary, roles they played with us in 2006. I think we’ve all learned more about life since then and it’s been equally rewarding to dig deeper this time around with these two experienced actors. I am immensely grateful to the team I have around me on this production. Some are old friends: Bing and Linda on our music staff, always bringing the best out of our talented cast, Adam with his beautiful set designs, Andrew with his lighting magic and Sienna with her flair for period hairstyles. Some are very welcome newcomers: Catharine and Sydney balancing authenticity and creativity in their costuming, and Margaret bringing her exacting eye to the show’s many props. SOUTH PACIFIC is a small story, told against an epic backdrop. Its details and subtleties are every bit as important as its grand gestures—it’s been great working with a cast and crew that appreciates this, and find such fresh and heartfelt responses to the work at hand. SOUTH PACIFIC reminds us all that it is never too late to have your eyes opened. Rudy Hogenmiller Artistic Director Join us at an exclusive South Michigan Avenue penthouse in Chicago!
