The President’s Column
Welcome to the spring issue of The Point! It is so exciting to see
our neighborhood wake up from its long winter slumber. Outside,
the daffodils are in full bloom. My neighbor’s phlox is cascading
down his landscaping stones in a lavender waterfall. The
Bradford pears are putting forth their magnificent white pompoms, possibly cheering on their favorite teams in the NCAA
basketball tournament.
I invite you to turn off your television and enjoy the latest episode
of Mother Nature in Five Points. Instead of channel surfing, you
can ride a different kind of wave down the streets, avenues and
alleys of our neighborhood. You will enjoy a display of colors
unmatched by Technicolor or high-definition LCD. Oh, and the
fragrance of flowers in the air – that is something that no network
could ever deliver.
I hope you enjoy this issue of The Point. We would love to see
you at the April 10th meeting. Come out and meet your neighbors
and celebrate the arrival of spring in our own little garden – Five
Points!

Visit some of Huntsville's most beautiful historic homes and beautiful gardens. The Tour includes
six private homes, three residential gardens, and the First United Methodist Church. Located in
three historic districts, (Twickenham, Old Town, and the Five Points), these areas cover more
than 50 residential blocks and showcase the popular architectural styles of their time - from

MAPLE HILL CEMETERY STROLL
Sunday, May 6, 2007 • 2 - 4:30 p.m.
More than 200 years of history will come alive for the
annual Maple Hill Cemetery Stroll. Costumed
volunteers will share the stories of over 65 notables,
both famous and infamous, who shaped the future
of Huntsville and Alabama. Included are five
Alabama Governors, soldiers from past wars, artist,
poet and writer Maria Howard Weeden, the notorious
madam, Molly Teal and Tallulah Bankhead visiting
her parent's graves. This event is free to the public.

Historic Marker Order
Our next order will be placed May 15th, and again in mid-October. It
typically takes 6 weeks before placement. If you would like to purchase
a Marker for your historic home, it s not too early to start thinking
about it - sometimes the research required to verify the name and date
is time consuming.

interested and would like more information. We need at least two
Markers per order or a set up fee of $35.00 will be added.

Clinton-centric Progressive Dinner
On February 25th a group of neighbors on Clinton Avenue and Wellman Avenue
participated in a progressive dinner. In this mobile dinner party each household
provides a course of the meal. A German theme was selected by the participants.
Clarke and Tori Moore hosted cocktails. Shelly and Elise Heard hosted the
appetizer course. Ronnie Smith hosted the salad course. Patricia and Dan Tatum
hosted the entrée course. Finishing the evening, Patricia Edwards hosted the
dessert course.

Fourth Friday Dinner
Débuts
On February 23rd the first ever
Fourth Friday Dinner was hosted at
Sazio. Twenty-six neighbors
convened at 7 o clock to enjoy fine
dining and Five Points fellowship.
The event was a roaring good time
and it proved to be quite popular. It
was decided to make this a monthly
event as long as attendance remains
healthy.

What Can We Do to Help?
On February 13th members of FPHDA met with the Community
Affairs Officers of the North and the South Precinct. Officers
Corey Harris and Donnie Daly committed almost two hours of
their busy schedule to hear our concerns and give us some
pointers on how we can help Huntsville Police Department keep
us safe.
1. Report all criminal activity to HPD. We are the eyes and
ears of the neighborhood. We must establish a record to
help HPD detect a pattern and justify devoting more
resources to our neighborhood. Do not hesitate to call
HPD with your concerns. The non-emergency number is
722-7100.
2. You have every right to report suspicious people on your
property and in the neighborhood. HPD does not know
who lives in the neighborhood. HPD will remove
trespassers from your property and instruct them not to
return. If they return, they can then be arrested. Do not
answer the door when you are uncomfortable. Do not give
food or money to solicitors. Use the non-emergency
number to report trespassers and suspicious persons.
Report all solicitors.
3. You can request your street receive traffic calming
measures to control speeding. Fill out a Neighborhood
Traffic Calming Program Questionnaire :

and return it to the Huntsville Traffic Engineering
Department. Be willing to serve as a contact for your
street.
4. During times of absence or construction, you can request
that your residence be “Patrolled Frequently.” Call the
precinct secretary and make the request. North of Pratt,
contact the North Precinct at 746-4111. South of Pratt,
contact the South Precinct at 213-4503.
5. When reporting criminal activity, give all relevant
information. State who might be adversely affected, e.g.
neighborhood children, elderly persons, single women, etc.
This will help speed your response.
6. Volunteer for Community Watch. An organizer is needed
for south of Pratt.

This is a much anticipated neighborhood
event. For those of you who are new to
the neighborhood, every year Our Five
Points Historic District Association
sponsors a District wide yard sale.
Individuals are encouraged to have a yard
sale, at their own residence or partner
with their neighbors. Our Association
will advertise this sale in the Huntsville
Times and post flyers at nearby
businesses. This brings many new faces
into our neighborhood each year.
So start your spring cleaning and gather
your items for this years Yard Sale. It is
a wonderful sight to see everyone walking
up and down the streets and avenues, and
is a great time to get to know your own
neighbors.

FPHDA MEMBERSHIP
The Five Points Historic District Association has much to be proud of since its formation in 1999.
Members initiated the preservation, beautification and re-dedication of the Wellman Family Park,
published an already sold-out cookbook, established a quarterly neighborhood newsletter, assisted
with the placement of 70 historic markers throughout the neighborhood, created a walking tour of the
district held each October and sponsored by the Huntsville-Madison County Convention and Visitors
Bureau, endorsed and raised funds for the placement of a historic marker honoring the significance of
our neighborhood.
The Huntsville Pilgrimage Association now includes a home from Five Points on its annual spring
tour of historic homes. We sponsor a Neighborhood-wide Yard Sale each year, have a Spring Plant
Swap, enjoy dinner gatherings, and notify our residents when things of importance to our community
arise. This year our neighborhood grew to the North to include 146 more homes.
We enjoy our neighborhood and our neighbors.
Please support our organization with your membership!
MEMBERSHIP - Membership in the Five Points Historic District Association is open to anyone who
shares our purpose - to preserve the historic and unique character of our neighborhood. Members
who are not residents are entitled to attend all functions and receive our quarterly newsletter.
Members who are residents-property owners are also eligible to vote on all matters brought before
the general membership and to be elected or appointed to hold office in the Association.
