It will be a busy year for the BC Archery Association as we are involved in some major events. Where to find it... 4 Para Pan American Games 5 Coaching Clinic I would like to congratulate Kevin Evens from Jaffray, BC for winning the Pan American Para Archery Championships and securing a place on the Canadian Team that will compete at the Olympic Para Archery Championships in London this summer. 6 Canadian Championships The BC Winter Games will be in Vernon and each zone will be sending a team to compete, along with coaches and chaperons. We will also have a experienced group of officials who will run the competition. These games are important to our archers, as they will be using the same format as the Canada Winter Games. One of the competitions will involve a head to head format, winner advances. That is the format for the Canada Winter Games. At the World Championships and other major World Cup events, all medals are determined by head to head competition, with only the winner advancing. The competition is usually close and one point can make the difference between advancing to the next round or not. If two archers are tied at the end of their competition, they each shoot one arrow and the closest to the center determines who moves on to the next round. Our archers need to get into tournaments that feature head to head competitions and the only outdoor one this year, besides the BC Winter Games which is indoor will be the Canadian Target Championships in Victoria in August. There will be three events to enter, the field, target and the Open which is a head to head competition. 11 JOP Indoor Championships Reg. Joanne Georgelin Archer Editor I encourage all archers to come out and shoot with some of the best archers in the world. They are all friendly, as most archers are, and all started out the way we did and with practice and lots of mistakes. See you in Victoria. Yours in promoting archery, Ken Cameron WINTER 2012 - Archer 3 Para Pan American Games Guadalajara, Mexico On November 6, 2011, one recurve archer Lynn Tremblay from Quebec, compound archer Bob Hudson from Saskatchewan, and compound archer Kevin Evans from Jaffrey B,C. Also Doctor Linda Gagnon and me Vladimir Kopecky we met in Guadalajara for Para Pan American Games. 32 countries from American Continent competed in 15 different sports, archery included. We all stay in Village and everything was provided for us there. Bussing to the venue took 45 min, the place was very nice, surrounded with palm trees, no wind, and temperature around 27 degree Celsius. Next day we start practicing, and spend every day around 3-4 hr. at the venue. The Canadian CPC contingency had every day some form of activities on agenda, one day raising Canadian Flag in International part of village, next time it was a meeting for a pep talk to raise the awareness of athletes who they are and what is their mission – to represent the country to their best ability, but not only on the fields and halls, but as a citizens. On November 11 we have very emotional get to getter to remember our people who lost their life's in various wars. Our archers where getting better thanks to provided services from Physiotherapy team, Bob and Kevin where still herding badly, arms, lower back, and also Kevin leg. The night before competition all 3 archers become violently ill from stomach, doctors give them some medication, but it took 3-4 days to make it well. The Qualification round was only huge effort to survive! After the competition was on ,in some sports from Nov, 7 th, every second night the CPC People, and I must say , I never see any organisation work as hard as these Women and Men, to make every body life as easy as possible, have night of medal recognition. And I tell you it was very nice to see our athletes being treaded like Rock Stars! When the Championship competition comes, Lyn was not very successful, but since she was the only lady in her categories, she secure her spot on Olympic squad to London 2012. The men where competing with all they got against very strong opponents from Brazil, Venezuela, and in Semi Finals against US archers. It was the best competition I ever witness in my life. Both our man where one point down, and only one arrow to go. And they made it ! In the finale, Kevin was feeling little bit better than day before and show his superiority by 4 points winning the Gold medal, which also secure his spot at the Olympics 2012. Canadian Archery Team represent Canada to their best, I was very please with everything, and grateful for the opportunity to be there. Others obviously recognise our team as well because Federal Minister of Sport and State come to as on 3 occasions asked for demonstration, and when Kevin present him with the arrow which win him gold, he was very touch, and all of us where invited to reception with lots of good food and entertainment. Opening ceremony will stay in my memory bank for ever, I fell like a real Canadian, too bad I couldn’t avoid closing ceremony, organisers invite a rock group and it was a torture to listing to that noise. All you individuals who are involve in Archery, you are a noble people, the sport we love is beautiful, it teach youngsters discipline, control, sportsmanship, respect rules of the sport. WINTER 2012 - Archer 4 Coaching Clinic Burke Mountain Archers will be hosting a Coaching Clinic “Instructional Intermediate” on March 24 &25. This will be what used to be called Level 2. You do not need to have the Beginner level to take this. It is open to any one. What we need now is a commitment from at least 6 people for this to go ahead. Contact Rhonda McLennan at rdm25@hotmail.com WINTER 2012 - Archer 5 Canadian Championships 2012 is BC’s turn to host the Canadian Championships (all of them, 3D (indoor and outdoor) Field and Target including the Canadian Open), an incredible opportunity for everyone associated with archery in BC. The 3Ds will be publicised elsewhere, here I will give some details for the Field, which will be held in Duncan August 8 and the Target events to be held in Victoria August 9 – 12. The event website is now up and running in both official languages, it contains as much information as is available and will be updated as more is known. Directions to all the venues, costs, registration forms, necessary links and a listing of who’s registered are on the site www.victoriabowmen.com/2012 Canadian So what would be in it for you: • If you’re an archer, no matter what your skill level, this is, you have an opportunity to shoot with some of the best archers in the world in your own back yard • If you don’t want to shoot, you could come and watch, maybe even lend a hand • If you’re a Coach, come and see some different techniques and watch how coaches interact at the National/International level • and maybe even lend a hand • If you’re a judge, at the appropriate level, you can volunteer to judge the event • If not, you could consider applying to help score (the para wheelchair athletes all need assistance) • And….. maybe even lend a hand • If you’re a parent, well you can watch Julie or Johnny shoot, catch some of the great Victoria tourist attractions • There will be lots of seating the field is one of the most picturesque in Canada! • maybe even lend a hand As you can see there are ample opportunities to come and see a real archery event! It won’t come this way for at least another 8 years. We hope to put on one of the best shoots Canada has seen in sometime, so why not come down and join us! You must keep update, so you are not applying “old” rules. We are now partway through another great indoor season, with many opportunities to get out and compete; you will be seeing judges out there doing their thing as volunteers to make the game fare and safe for all competitors. So now the part of knowing the rules every so often someone comes up with a new design of equipment and that equipment doesn’t fit into the rules well so an opinion is asked of the rules committee and they are poled and state their opinions on this new design of equipment. The last one was the Doinker Tactical Stabilizer here is what was decided. It is the majority opinion of the Rules Committee that the Doinker Tactical Stabilizer and any other brands of a similar description, are acceptable within the description of a stabilizer for Canadian target Bowhunter Unlimited division (and by reference to the Bowhunter Limited and Bowhunter Unsighted divisions) if they are consistent with the rule 7.3.8 regarding the length of the stabilizer. 7.3.8 Bowhunter Unlimited • One stabilizer only is allowed provided it is not longer than twelve (12) inches (30.5 cm) measure from the point of attachment to the bow to the furthest part of the stabilizer. Quick releases, couplers, etc. are considered part of the stabilizer. ...... It is the majority opinion of the Rules Committee that this is to be considered one stabilizer. The length of the stabilizer is to be measured as the length of the stabilizer rod plus the length of the lateral offset device. Thus, if the stabilizer projects in both the forward and rearward direction, the total length of the stabilizer rod, including all attachments, and the distance from the point of attachment to the riser to the centre of the stabilizer diameter are to be measured and the sum of those measurements must be no more than 12 inches. Archery Canada (AC) requires that all member clubs have at least two club level judge to ensure that all events are run safely; so 3D events should also be seeing judges on the ranges, again to make the event fare and safe. To become an AC club judge or a safety officer you can go to their web http://fca.ca/en/judgingand-rules/163-safety-officer.html to become a Provincial Judge contact me and arrange a weekend clinic it is well worth the time for coaches as well as those that want to judge. Sometimes it is required that changes be made to accommodate smaller clubs that can’t get enough members to take the training to become a Provincial Judge so I have started a trial online judging course that requires a hands on day at a event such as the BC Indoors (this year in Cranbrook Easter Weekend) or BC Outdoors (this year in Prince George on the Labor Day Long Weekend) to learn the finer points of judging followed by the open book examination. It should take a couple of months to do the online part as there is always a delay in getting back the assignments. I am looking forward to a successful completion of this first course at the BC Indoors. The only requirement is that you are a current member of the BCAA and your club is also a member. Everyone should look up the new rule changes, (especially the 3D ones, as they have changed a bit), so you can are competing in the right class. Attention Judges I am now asking for those that are interested in working the BC Indoors (Easter weekend Cranbrook); the BC Bowhunting Championships (Salmon Arm BC June 23 & 24 2012); BC Outdoors (Labor Day weekend Prince George). We require two fully certified judges minimum to work every provincial event the rest can be judges in training. The selections of judges are based on need to complete their Provincial Status and travel distance (budget). The clubs that bid for events are to supply at least one provincially certified judge for their event or cover the expense to bring in that judge, the BCAA will cover the expense of the other judges. So if you are interested please contact me by April 29, 2012. You can look up the rules at http://www.archerycanada.ca/en/ judging-and-rules/rule-book Also, in consideration that the descriptions of stabilizers is essentially the same, this interpretation is applicable for the stabilizers of the 3D Hunter and 3D Hunter Fingers divisions. Archery Canada. 01 January 2012 Reminders WINTER 2012 - Archer 18 2012 Canadian Archery Championships 2012 Canadian Archery Championships to be held on Vancouver Island August 8 - 12, 2012. The Field events will be held at the Cowichan Bowmen just south of Duncan, BC on August 8th. The Target Events will be held in Victoria at the West Shore Recreation Complex in the community of Colwood (a western suburb of Victoria). This event should have some BC Judges stepping up to become National Judge Candidates if you are a certified Provincial Judge consider if you would like to become a certified National judge; this is how it works. So according to the AC program, a candidate has to work at least 2 Canadian Outdoor Championships with mentors and meet the requirments of AC program. This means, that a judge candidate has to answer cases study many time in a year and apply to judge major events of FCA. So if you have the time and would like to become a National judge; this year is a good starting point or if you have been a national judge in the past and would like to get involved again let me know. If you are interested in the Canadian Archery Championships as a judge candidate some funds will be available. 3D time is not considered part of the training to become a National Judge. But if you would like apply for the National 3D the application is included but the BCAA cannot support you to this event. Call for Applications of Judges for 2012 Canadian 3D OUTDOOR Archery Championship Silver Star Mountain Resort Vernon, British Colombia August 3-6, 2012 Officials Team (comprised of 4 judges) Ghislain Arsenault, Archery Canada’s Judge Committee Chairperson is now accepting applications from qualified judges wishing to participate in the 2012 Archery Canada 3D Outdoor Championship that will be held at Silver Star Mountain Resort, Vernon, British Columbia, from August 3rd - 6th 2012. Visit the Championship website at: silverstar3dnationals.com Both Archery Canada and the Host Organizing Committee (HOC) provide coverage of expenses incurred by the Members of the Officials Team. Archery Canada covers the following: i) daily per diem at a rate of $40.00; and ii) travel to and from the host city (air travel or ground transportation). Air travel is the cost of an Air Canada Tango class or equivalent priced class of ticket with other airlines such as WestJet, Porter. For those that travel by car, Archery Canada provides a reimbursement rate of $0.30 per kilometre to a maximum equal to the above described airline ticket cost. It is the lesser amount of the two (ground or air transport) that is reimbursed by Archery Canada. The HOC covers the following: i) accommodation (based on double occupancy)*; and ii) ground transportation to and from the hotel and the competition venue; and iii) a banquet ticket. * Judges who want private rooms, are responsible for paying the additional charges.
