Territory
Lying on the north side of Mount d’Alma, at an
altitude of 250m, Scarlino overlooks the town’s
territory, it stretches from the Tyrrhenian coast, of
which the Gulf of Follonica occupies a large part,
11 kilometres, onto the plains of Valle Del Pecora
and the ample areas of green marquis, ending at
the territories of Gavorrano, Massa Marittima and
Castiglione Della Pescaia. Immersed in greenery,
Scarlino’s historical centre has distant origins and
in the meantime preserves the charm of a medieval
village closed within its walls and well protected
by the stately fortress, reassured by the austere
but enchanting churches. Completing the town’s
territory is the small village of Scarlino Scalo, a
township most populated and rich in services of the
Council, with its lively commercial and craftsmanship
trade. Then to Puntone, a strategic seaside resort in
a stage of great development, with the port and the
long sandy beaches of Tombolo.
The Pisana Fortress and the
Documentation Centre
Riccardo Francovich
3000 years of history
The Pisana Fortress, at the summit of the inhabited
area of Scarlino, dominates the ample coastal mirror and the valley of the River Pecora. The archaeological sites have allowed for the reconstruction
of the settlement dynamics that were continuous
from the XI century AD. It gave light to the typical
medieval phenomenon of moving villages to higher
ground and fortifying them. Educational panels and
the reconstruction accompanied by the view of the
archaeological area which surrounds the Fortress
allows for a striking 360o view of the surrounding
territory. The ideal fi nishing touch to the view of
the Pisana Fortress area is represented by the Documentation Centre “Riccardo Francovich” which
hosts, together with a detailed educational panels,
the most part of the archaeological fi nds uncovered
during the digs. Including the permanent display “Il
Tesoretto di Scarlino” (Scarlino’s Little Treasure):
100 gold coins in minted condition from around
1450, mysteriously hidden in a cavity of an ancient
church.

The “Bandite” of Scarlino
An heritage of public lands
The Bandite of Scarlino is a forest park of vast
dimensions, 87oo hectares. Two thirds of which
are found within the territorial grounds of Scarlino
(the
rest within the Gavorrano, Follonica and
Castiglione della Pescaia territories). The name
“bandite” (bans) derives from the aged method
of using public bans by the council to give the
ownership of the communal lands to the citizens.
The park, forthe most part is marquis, which
overlooks onto the Gulf of Follonica and extends
into the surrounding hills.
Services: Walking and cycling paths, for cyclists
with mountain bikes, with route directions ground
level, picnic areas and on sale practical and easyto-follow maps. In the areas that are rich in environmental aspects, there are panoramic spots
and educational paths.
Il tesoro di Maremma
ENGLISH
The Faunal Oasis of
Scarlino’s Marshes
Once upon a time there was the
Maremma
Partly saltwater and partly fresh water, the humid
area of the Marshes of Scarlino, represent the
wreckage of what once was the landscape of the
Maremma, today most of which has disappeared
following the intervention of reclamation. It covers
an area of 155 hectares and occupies level grounds
formed by a series of heterogeneous alluvial
deposits. It is situated just outside the built-up
area of Puntone, between the River Pecora and
the Allacciante Canal and it is separated from the
coast by a few dozen metres. Visits are possible
by an elevated railway that runs from the “ExCasello Idraulico” of Puntone. It allows a journey
crossing over submerged (clear) and surfaced lands
depending on the season and rainfall. A journey
dominated by herbaceous species and unlimited low
shrubs and the south of the area by a large reed-thicket.

Underwater Archaeology
Underwater excavation work carried out between
2000 and 2001, before the construction work of
the tourist port in the harbour of Portiglioni, led to
a considerable quantity of archeological artefacts
being recovered from the seabed in the zone of
Puntone of Scarlino. The great number of those
artefacts reveals that the bay had attracted a great
deal of mercantile shipping from the rd 3 century
B.C. This find has provided important evidence that
the area was home to the Portus Scabris mentioned
in ancient literature. Archaelogical artefacts as
various objects that accidentally fell overboard
during loading and unloading, amphorae and vases
that were damaged in navigation and were thrown
into the sea to make space in the hold, remains of
sunken ships and vessels. The exhibition layout
aims to reconstruct port life using the archaelogical
artefacts found. These objects have been guarded
by the sea for centuries and are here today as
witnesses of past history...a history that is ours.
Services: visitors and information center, bookshop

The Etruscan in the Alma Valley
The Etruscan necropolis, which today is immersed
in a thick marquis forest on the western slopes of
Poggio Tondo, originally was visible from afar for
its conical shape of the tumuli of pebbles and earth
topped by a stone “cippus”. The archaeological
area is composed of 4 tombs dating back to the VII
and VI century AD and the remains of an Etruscan
farm dating back to the IV-V century. The tombs
though desecrated have rendered a part of the set
of objects placed in the tomb at the time of burial:
vases made from ceramics and more rarely bronze,
of local production (Vetulonia) and imported and
containers for perfumes. The Documentation Centre
in Scarlino, piazza Guelfi, presents the exibition “The
Etruscans in Scarlino” with the most significant finds
of the tombs and educational panels.
The Port of Scarlino
A Modern port with an ancient
history
At only 16 nautical miles for the island of Elba
and a short distance from the medieval villages
of Scarlino and Massa Marittima, the Marina of
Scarlino is an ideal starting point for holidays
within the tuscan archipelago. It is also a safe
harbour used since the times of the Romans;
where one can leave their boat all year round. The
Tourist Port, divided into the Marina, Porto Canale
and the Fiumara, is made up of 950 spaces for
boats, which can range from 6 up to 40 metres. All
equipped with water for industrial use, drinking
water, electricity, floating bridges with fi ngers,
control towers, shipyards, petrol pumps, water
bilge suction systems, parking lots and small
warehouses are available, kept within the high
standards of the surrounding landscape. The new
Tourist Port of Scarlino, is today one of the most
modern and efficient facilities for pleasure crafts
on the entire Tyrrhenian coast.
Services: educational panels allow the visit the following sites:
“La Tomba del tamburo” “La Tomba del Carro” “La
Tomba del Cippo” “Latomba delle Due Porte, ”the
Etruscan farm, a building still little known in etruria.

The “Carriere” (Races) of
the 19th
A Taste of the Past
This festival has religious origins, but has now
assumed a secular character and is very popular
attracting thousands of visitors. It relates back
to the miraculous event, which took place in
1855, when a cholera epidemic ended following a
religious procession. Since then every 19 August
the remembrance of this event is kept alive through
popular festivities, which, starting in the 70s
assumed unusual features.
Three districts Rocca, Centro and San Donato (in
accordance with the three ancient precincts that
made up the the medieval town) gain final victory
after a series of breathtaking challenges. From the
historic parade to archery, from the running relay
in costume (hence the name Carriere {races}) to
the decorations within the districts which at night
magically become stages where theatrical plays
are performed. At midnight, the party ends with its
final verdict, which provides joy to the victors and
tears for the defeated.
