Daily motivation: Building team positivity

There are two truths every business team should know:
1. Positive messages sell, and negative messages usually don’t, and
2. Self confidence is good for most people and necessary for those looking to sell.
For as long as people have been selling, their managers have recognized the importance of positive thinking and confidence.
Here are 10 things to tell your team members that’ll get both out of them:
1. Accentuate the positive and eliminate the negative, because positive messages sell more effectively than negative
ones.
2. Start every presentation by assuming that prospects will buy from you.
3. Maintain enthusiasm by repeating positive affirmations to yourself, such as: “I will close this sale because I have the
best product.”
4. Invite prospects to imagine how their lives will be improved after they buy your product or service.
5. Be optimistic about the close.
6. When dealing with pessimistic prospects remain upbeat and always return the discussion to the positive side.
7. In addition to optimism, build credibility by learning and studying until you truly become an expert.
8. Don’t raise expectations you can’t meet.
9. Have a firm grip on the true value of your product or service.
10. Remember that enthusiasm may mean more than knowledge.

Chamber Surprise Patrol visits T.P. Supply Company, Inc.
On Thursday October 26,
2010 the Chamber Surprise Patrol paid an unannounced visit to T.P. Supply Company, Inc. located
at 203 Galloway Street in
Mount Airy, NC. The
Chamber Surprise Patrol
entered the office lobby
with balloons, a candy
basket and a box of cookies. We were greeted with
a warm welcome and a
beautiful smile from Lynn
Bickerstaff, who has been
with T.P. Supply Company
for 18 years. Owner of T.P.
Supply Company, Inc.,
Troy Payne was out back
surveying the lot and
would return momentarily. In the mean time, Tyler Payne, Troy’s son who handles the web-based
business logistics working from an adjoining office joined us in the lobby for the celebration. Troy
arrived minutes later and we were able to get the management staff together for a few minutes.
Troy gave us the history of T.P. Supply Company, Inc.
The company started in 1979 and catered to the large industrial and textile manufacturing plants
that were in our area; providing them with chemical and cleaning supplies. As the local economy
changed and the local industries moved out of the country, T.P. Supply Company, Inc. had to
change in order to stay in business. In 2001 T.P. Supply Company, Inc. became a material handing
equipment company; buying new and used storage products that T.P. Supply Company, Inc. refurbished, reconditioned and resold. Dedicated attention to both quality and service has proved successful for T.P. Supply Company, Inc. with repeat customers and an award winning reputation!

Chamber Surprise Patrol Visits
Rock Solid Dimensional Stone, Inc.
On Tuesday November 16, 2010 The
Chamber Surprise Patrol paid an unannounced visit to Rock Solid Dimensional
Stone, Inc. located in the Piedmont Triad
West Industrial Park at 581 Mountain View
Lane Mount Airy.
It was a rainy morning but The Chamber
Surprise Patrol was delivering cheerful balloons, a candy basket and a box of cookies
for Doug Porter, owner of Rock Dimensional Stone Inc. and his staff. The Chamber Surprise Patrol was greeted by Arlette
Porter, Doug’s wife, who just happened to
have dropped by for a few minutes (we had
called Arlette to see if she could join us for
the surprise visit). Doug Porter emerged
from his office where he was greeted with
balloons, a candy basket, cookies and a
sincere Thank You for being a Chamber
Member from The Chamber Surprise
Patrol.
After introductions were made Doug asked his staff to join him at the beautiful stone fireplace in the
lobby for a few photos. Rock Solid Dimensional Stone is a fascinating place and Doug was so interesting to talk to. He showed us blue prints of a 30,000 square foot house that calls for 1 million feet of Rock
Solid stone work. His engineers showed us how their computer programs work with the stone cutting
equipment in the cutting room. We were given a tour of the warehouse where all of the cutting is done
and the stone is unloaded and loaded. Doug told us that math revolves around almost everything they
do at Rock Solid Dimensional Stone.
Back in the office we were able to see photos of finished projects and the stone work was amazing!
Doug was so pleasant to talk to that before we knew it we had taken up an hour and half of his time.

Chamber Surprise Patrol Visits Select Real Estate
On Tuesday December 7, 2010 The
Chamber Surprise Patrol paid an
unannounced visit to Select Real Estate

Airy, NC 27030. The Chamber Surprise
Patrol braved the frigid temperatures
carrying a basket of candy, a box of
cookies and two bunches of balloons
just to say “Thank You” to Select Real

The Chamber Surprise Patrol entered
the office surprising Deborah Hawks-Chilton, a realtor/broker, with the balloons, the candy, and the
cookies and a camera in hand! After proper introductions of who we were and why we were visiting
Select Real Estate, Deborah seemed to be put at ease. As we were getting to know her, Anne
Peterson realtor/broker/SFR that has been operating the Winston-Salem office arrived and we really

Pine State Marketing
Hosts Chamber Business After Hours Event
Pine State Marketing, Inc. hosted a Chamber Business After Hours Event on Thursday October 28,
2010 at 219 Frederick Street in Mount Airy, NC.
The Business After Hours was held in conjunction
with their Customer Appreciation celebration, and
over 150 Chamber Members, Guests and Customers were in attendance. This annual event is anticipated and looked forward to by many of us because
Bucky Holcomb and the Pine State team plan an
amazing event every year.
This year the food was exceptional and was complimented with wine selections from Round Peak
Vineyards, the entertainment was awesome, Massage Therapist, Krystal Jones gave complimentary
chair massages throughout the evening and everyone got to select a t-shirt of their color choice and
then watch the screen printing process first hand.
Custom wrapped vehicles that Pine State had created were on display for everyone to see up close
what a work of art a wrap really is, also on display
were other custom products such as t-shirts, aprons
and signage. Bucky, Kim and the Pine State Marketing staff thank you for hosting this Business After

Youth Leadership Surry spends the day in Mount Airy
Youth Leadership Surry spent the day in Mount Airy on Tuesday, November 9, 2010 where activities focused on history and tourism. The YLS class of 2009-2010 met at the Mount Airy Museum of Regional History, a perfect setting to discuss the history of Surry County.
The morning began with “The History of Surry County” presented by Marion Venable, Executive
Director of Surry Community College Foundation & Coordinator of Grants. Marion Venable, a
respected and knowledgeable local historian, started with this region and it’s terrain over 13,000
years ago and moved forward in time. The students were able to see artifacts that had been unearthed here in Surry County that were used to hunt with and to build things with.
Marion Venable discussed the hardships and struggles of daily life that existed in this region and
what our ancestors had to endure.
Following a short break, the students were given a guided tour of the museum by Benny Burton
a long standing Board Member of the Museum and history enthusiastic. Mrs. Burton led the students on a walk through history where they were able to see items used hundreds of years ago.
After lunch at Barney’s Café on Main Street, the students boarded the Good Time Charley Trolley for a tour of Mount Airy’s historical sites and tourist’s attractions narrated by Esther Johnson,
a history and genealogy enthusiast and a Group Tour Guide and Visitor Specialist for The
Greater Mount Airy Chamber of Commerce. Along the tour Mrs. Johnson pointed out historic
homes, churches and commercial buildings along the route, geological sites like the North Carolina Granite Quarry, the various rivers, tourists attractions like the Andy Griffith Museum, Andy’s
Home Place, the Andy Griffith Playhouse, Floyd’s Barber Shop, Snappy Lunch, just to name a
few.
The day ended back at the Mount Airy Museum of Regional History with an evaluation completed by the students on the days focus and activities.
Youth Leadership Surry is a leadership and professional development program, sponsored by
the Greater Mount Airy Chamber of Commerce and executed by the Chamber’s Education Support Committee. YLS began in 2000, and has educated, engaged and enlightened 300 local high
school students by introducing them to their peers, giving them a unique view of the workings of
Surry County, instilling a sense of pride about their hometown and the importance of leadership
and responsibility to service as they become the future leaders of tomorrow.
This week will complete the program for the YLS Class of 20092010 with group presentations being presented at a graduation program that will also welcome the
incoming Class of 2010-2011 and

SouthData Acquires Document Technology
MOUNT AIRY, N.C. ─ SouthData, Inc. of Mount Airy, N.C., a national, full-service document management
provider has acquired the assets of Document Technology, Inc. of Mobile, Ala., a company specializing in microfilm, imaging, storage and retrieval.
The acquisition was effective on Nov. 1, 2010, and is SouthData’s second acquisition in the market and city.
Terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
“Document Technology is a well respected company in this market. We are very pleased to have them join
our team.” said SouthData President John Springthorpe, III.
Document Technology, formerly American Microfilm and Records Management, began as a microfilm service bureau in 1983, later expanding its market into the electronic arena.
Mike Avery, formerly with Document Technology, will assume the role of General Manager for the combined
operations at 4344 Downtowner Loop South and 1508 Azalea Road, both in Mobile. Larry Emrich who led
the Micro Images division will continue to serve SouthData as a special project consultant prior to his retirement next year.
“I am thrilled to have someone of Mike’s caliber and experience leading this operation for us,” Springthorpe
continued. “Mike has a wealth of knowledge in this field, having worked in the document management industry for 19 years.”

Insteel Industries Acquires Assets of Ivy
Steel & Wire for $51.1M
November 22, 2010
MOUNT AIRY, N.C., -- Insteel Industries, Inc. (Nasdaq: IIIN) today announced that its
wholly-owned subsidiary, Insteel Wire Products Company has purchased certain of the assets of
Ivy Steel & Wire, Inc. for a purchase price of approximately $51.1 million, subject to certain
post-closing adjustments.
Ivy, a division of Oldcastle, Inc, the U.S. holding company of CRH PLC (NYSE: CRH), is one
of the nation's largest producers of welded wire reinforcement and wire products for concrete
construction applications. Ivy operates five facilities, which are located in Arizona, Florida,
Missouri, Pennsylvania and Texas. In 2009, Ivy reported net sales of $104.3 million
Under the terms of the purchase agreement, Insteel acquired, among other assets, certain of
Ivy's inventories and its production facilities located in Hazleton, Pennsylvania; Jacksonville,
Florida; Kingman, Arizona; and St. Joseph, Missouri in addition to the production equipment
located at its Houston, Texas facility for $37.6 million of cash and a $13.5 million secured subordinated note payable to Ivy over five years. Ivy retains, among other assets, accounts receivable and the assets associated with its Pilot Steel operations located in Pompano Beach, Florida.
The purchase price is subject to an adjustment to be determined based upon the closing working
capital balance and may be further adjusted if Ivy does not comply with certain obligations contained in the purchase agreement. The cash portion of the purchase price was funded from cash
and cash equivalents on hand.
"The addition of Ivy's facilities to our existing geographic footprint enhances Insteel's competitiveness in the Northeast, Midwest and Florida markets in addition to providing a platform to
serve west coast markets more effectively," commented H.O. Woltz III, Insteel president and
chief executive officer. "We expect that the integration of Ivy will result in enhanced customer
service capabilities and significantly lower operating costs."

A MONUMENTAL PROJECT
November 11 - North Carolina's Yarbrough Transfer Company is performing a
significant project for the North Carolina Granite Corp., moving approximately 70
granite blocks from Mount Airy, NC to Jersey City, NJ.
The blocks weigh approximately 29.4 tonnes each and measure 3.6 m long, 1.8
m wide and 1.8 m tall (pictured below). While the granite blocks are not that bulky, they
are very fragile and require delicate handling. In total, the job will involve 70 loads, one
granite block per load.
This project is of significance from a national perspective, because the granite blocks
will be used to build a monument in memory of Franklin Delano Roosevelt on
Roosevelt Island in New York.
Once the granite blocks reach Jersey City, NJ, they are shipped by barge to Roosevelt
Island, where the blocks will be used to construct the monument.

In the spirit of Oprah Winfrey’s favorite things and the twelve days of
Christmas here’s a list of classic favorites for marketing during the holiday
season. Big business knows that Christmas is a big season for sales. It’s the
chance to get those finances in the black and clear out inventory for the next
year.
It is no different for small businesses. But true to the spirit of the season, the Holidays are a great time to connect on a deeper level with our customers. You get the chance to leave them with a good feeling and good impression of the soul and the service of your company. And that’s good for business! So here’s our list:
CHRISTMAS CARDS JR Griggs, author of 10 Ways to Put Yourself Out of Business suggests that you “send
out Christmas Cards instead of emails. People will hang a Christmas Card but they will not print and hang an
email.” This way your business remains in front of your customer all season long.
HOLIDAY ATMOSPHERE Create a holiday atmosphere on and off-line. For brick and mortar companies,
consider playing Christmas music and giving away seasonal treats. It sticks in your customers mind, and that’s
the goal, to be the top thought for whatever the service or product that you provide. As for web based companies
consider adding a little Christmas to the site. You could spruce up your header or banner. Or create a special
Holiday page. Use it to connect with customers. Conduct Holiday themed surveys, promote Christmas discounts or any Seasonal newsworthy events on that page.
FUND-RAISING Yes, we are talking about marketing, so that we can raise our funds. But in this case, let’s
focus on the season and give something away first. Support a cause that you believe in. It puts your companies
name out there for a good cause and brings in sales and new customers.
BRANDED GIFTS Provide the giveaway item at the next party or local event, and make sure the gift items are
tastefully branded with your company and contact information. Barbara Wells, SVP, Staples Promotional Products, says that “according to the Promotional Products Association International (PPAI), 52% of recipients do
business with a company after receiving its promotional item.”
COUPONS ! “Coupons are a winning strategy holiday season or not,” says
J.W. Arnold of PRDC, a public relations and marketing company based in
Washington, DC. “Times are still tough and while consumers will spend
more during the holiday season, they are still very cost conscious and will
jump on a coupon offer.” Make sure that it:
1. promotes a product that clients will respond to, and
2. is time sensitive in order to encourage a prompt purchase.
Most of these tips are classic, Christmas marketing tools (some of which can
be used all year round). Consider this your Holiday reminder. And
although we are already in the season, you can implement these
quickly. The best marketing plan is the one that you actually implement.

Cost of 'The 12 Days of Christmas' items spikes this year,
nearing $100,000.
PITTSBURGH Jenifer Yates MSNBC — In the unlikely event that your
Christmas list this year includes every item mentioned in "The Twelve
Days of Christmas," be prepared to pay nearly $100,000.
Trying to buy the 364 items repeated in all the song's verses — from 12
drummers drumming to a partridge in a pear tree — would cost $96,824,
an increase of 10.8 percent over last year, according to the annual Christmas Price Index compiled by PNC Wealth Management.
So you might want to try for one of everything. That would cost only
$23,439, or 9.2 percent more than last year.
The 27th annual holiday index has historically mirrored the national Consumer Price Index, but not this year. The PNC Christmas Price Index grew 9.2 percent from last year,
compared with just a 1.1 percent increase in the much broader Consumer Price Index.
Jim Dunigan, managing executive of investment for PNC Wealth Management, said that's because the whimsical holiday price index looks at a much smaller group of goods and services.
Even within the index itself, there are some goods that have seen small increases and others that
have seen larger ones, he said.
Also, gold prices are high — which pushed the cost of five gold rings up 30 percent to $649.95
— as was the cost of hiring entertainers. Not to mention the birds.
"There's no doubt that our feathered friends in general make up a good portion of the increase,"
Dunigan said. The price of feed and availability led to a 78.6 percent increase in the price of two
turtle doves, to $100, and a whopping 233 percent increase in the cost of three French hens, to
$150.
Dunigan said that higher prices aren't necessarily a bad thing."The good news is that the
economy is improving, and we are starting to see some pockets of price increases, as long as the
total basket is controlled," he said.
Only four of the 12 gifts in the song didn't go up in price from last year: the pear tree ($149, not
including the partridge), four calling birds ($599.96), six geese ($150) and the eight maids-amilking ($58).
The most expensive item on the list was $6,294.03 to hire nine ladies dancing, a 15 percent increase from last year. The cheapest was $12 for one partridge, a 20 percent increase.
PNC Financial Services Group Inc. checks jewelry stores, dance companies, pet stores and other
sources to compile the list. Some of its sources this year include the National Aviary in Pittsburgh and the Philadelphia-based Pennsylvania Ballet Company.
Now’s the time to start prepping if you want to take
advantage of the new tax rules for next year.
Here are five new tax breaks you may be able to take advantage of in
2011, by way of financial expert Tim Begany:
1. Higher standard deductions: The standard deduction for single
people is $250 higher. Head of household is $50 higher. Married couples
stay the same.
2. No limit on itemized deductions: This is a one-time offer, as most
limits will most likely be reinstated next year. But for this tax season, there
is no limit on the number of itemized or standard deductions a person can
claim.
3. Higher earned income credit: This credit is meant to help low- to
mid-income taxpayers who’ve been hard hit over the past few years. It’s
higher than last year’s credit (up to $5,662), but can only be claimed if
your gross income falls within a lower tax bracket.
4. Health insurance deductions for the self employed: A new federal
tax break may be able to net you as much as 15% more in healthcare
deductions, if you own your own company or work as an independent
contractor (It’s a nice way to offset those 1099s). The new law allows the
self-employed to deduct healthcare expenses before adding in their
self-employment taxes, which generally adds up to a much more
significant deduction.
5. Tax-free employer-paid parking and transit costs: Some companies
have either cut the amount they’ll contribute to employees’ parking/transit
costs, or eliminated contributions altogether. With that in mind, this year
the IRS offers up to $230 a month for those expenses, tax free. You may
need to check to see if you qualify (and whether your employer is obligated), but if you’re paying huge monthly fees to park or travel to and from
work out of pocket, this tax break could offer up to $2,700 a year in relief.

and Canada. The staff tracked 12 from Canada in the month of
Nov 2010.
