Council Calendar at a Glance
The Story of St. Valentine
The Roman Emperor Claudius II was
fighting many wars. He wanted a strong
army, but many men did not want to be soldiers. Claudius thought the men wanted to
stay home to be with their wives and children instead of leaving to fight wars.

Shrine at Merlin

Claudius thought of an awful solution to his
problem. He decided to cancel all marriages! No one in all of Rome could get married. Claudius
thought that if the men couldn’t get married, the men would
ignore the women and want to be soldiers.
Valentine, who was a priest, believed that people needed to get
married. He thought that if they were not married, they would
be tempted to sin by living together without being married. So
he secretly and illegally married couples anyway! He performed
the weddings in secret places, so the Roman soldiers would not
find out.
2012 Columbus Day Activities.
We need two volunteers to participate on the 2012
Planning Committee.
Next meeting: Thursday February 23, 2012
St. Justin's Church Hall at 7:00 pm.
Please contact Brad Mahood, GK for additional details.
But they did find out. Valentine was arrested and brought before
the Emperor. The Emperor thought Valentine was a well spoken
and wise young man, and encouraged him to stop being a
Christian and become a loyal Roman. Valentine would not deny
his beliefs, and he refused. He was sent to prison until he could
be executed. While he was in prison, he sent out letters to his
friends and asked to be prayed for by writing Remember your
Valentine.
Volunteers Required !
Shrove Tuesday Pancake Dinner.
Tuesday February 21st.
Always a popular event with the Parish & Community.
Mark your calendar !
Valentine was killed on the 14th or the 24th of February in the
year 269 or 270. We celebrate Valentine’s Day on February 14th
in honor of St. Valentine.
Day of Prayer and Reflection for our Council
Saturday May 26th, 2012
Our Lady of the Rosary
Diocesan Shrine at Merlin.
Full particulars will be published in future bulletins. Put this date on your calendar.
Although it is not known whether this legend is factually true, it
is a good story anyway. It is nice to think of someone who
believed in marriage and was willing to risk death to do what he
believed was right.
This year, after you pick up a box of candy message hearts or
roses, remember the one for who this celebration originated – St.
Valentine. In honor of the patron saint of love, young people and
happy marriages who was martyred for his love of the Lord,
think of something more spiritual to do for your loved ones on
February 14?
ANNUAL CAR RAFFLE
Tickets will be sold for 4 weeks in the malls. We
will also set up in the Narthex (dates to be
anounced). All tickets are 3 for $5.
Please offer your assistance !

OUR EXECUTIVE
Prayer to Saint Valentine
Dear Lord, who art high in the Heavens,
Giver of Love and Passion,
And He who strings the heart’s cords,
Lead the Lovers this day, February ten plus four.
The day during the month of two,
When the date is the perfect number of God
Greater two souls and two hearts.
Some Loves are fleeting ,
But that which is built on you will never fail.
So guide the Lovers to know what is to be.
Your truths the Lovers’ mouths should speak,
For Your truth is that which is honest to the
heart.
Only this, then, should pass over the red lips of
the Lovers.
Your art, the Lovers simply a medium.
It is only with True Hearts that You can create
a Masterpiece,
So let the Lovers remember that their Soul’s
Desire
Is the one for which You light their Fire.
And let it be You who creates the Art of the
Lovers;
The art of two into one.

Brother Knights
It is hard to believe that we are now into February and that the season of Lent in right around the
corner. Ash Wednesday is fast approaching on the 22nd of February. I am not
sure about you, but time seems to pass by so quickly! It would be good for each
one of us to take some time prior to the 22nd to look seriously at our lives and
come up with a plan for Lent this year.
Often we first think about something we could give up for Lent, but I do not
believe that this is truly the purpose of Lent. Lent is more about becoming a better person, so that, we can celebrate the Resurrection of Christ more fully. So
maybe one of the best ways for this, would be to ask ourselves three questions:
1. If I could change one thing about myself, what would it be?
2. What is the first step to changing this in my life?
3. Would this change make me the person I would like to be on Easter?
This could be the basis for our Lenten observance this year. The bottom line is, who do I want to
be on Easter, so that I can enter into the resurrection more fully this year.
Peace
Father John
