MCA supports activities relating to the arts, fine arts, historical and scientific museums, and specific education through grants, advocacy, fundraising and partnerships. Learn more about the mission at mcaocala.com. Brick City Center for the Arts 23 SW Broadway Street Ocala, FL 34471 352.369.1500 PO Box 1571 Ocala, FL 34478 mca annual report 2014 www.mcaocala.com Chairman’s Report A Year of Assessment & ! Positive Growth! Working together for tremendous success This is the goal foremost in my mind when taking on a leadership role. It begins with assessment. What defines success for MCA? What is the current status of the organization? Who is on the team and what talent and skills do they bring to the table? What tools are in place, how are they being used, what support do we have in the community? How can we optimize our talents, tools, and efforts to build a strategy for success? After this hard look the board made some decisions and advanced the MCA mission of supporting local arts in three key ways. ! Cultural Grants. Awards of $16,600 were presented at this year’s Saluting the Arts breakfast presented by Duke Energy. Rus Adams and Karla Grimsley did a great job organizing this annual event showcasing our Cultural Grants program that in our 14 year history has disbursed over $214,000 total in annual funding directly to local arts organizations. Re-vitalizing our gallery portals. Our partnerships with the city of Ocala at Brick City Center for the Arts and On Top of The World at Arftful Gifts create the opportunity for contact and visibility in these key locations of the community. A commitment to improve our “product” in 2014 saw improved quality, increased activity, and a new look - all guided by professional management. Under the able direction of Paulette Millhorn at “The Brick”, and Diane Cahal at “Artful”, our galleries are thriving. We are seeing only the beginning of a beehive of arts activity and community happenings in 2015. ! Cultural Endowment Fund. The fund established with MCA’s proceeds from our signature project, Horse Fever, ensures MCA’s viability, and sustains the larger goal of local arts funding in perpetuity. Able management of this fund through our Endowment Policy has secured our organization, provided for improvements, and continued to growth so that MCA is positioned to set new, greater goals.! ! Our board leads a legacy that stretches back to the pre-MCA early 1990’s involvement of our volunteers, when CFCC (now College of Central Florida) brought John Briggs as Artist-in-Residence to a largely abandoned downtown. MCA grew out of these early days of volunteerism in downtown Ocala, and has been fortunate to do some great projects and develop many assets, the most important of which, is people. ! ! When people come together as we have at Brick City Center for the Arts for ! 25+ years, relationships are built. Experiences are shared and memories are created. MCA builds on this foundation of partnerships and relationships with the arts community, the city of Ocala, the business community, other nonprofits, schools, the media, our members and volunteers - all fellow arts enthusiasts who recognize the essential nature of the arts in improved quality of life, and care enough to be involved. As partners coming together with plans in place to improve the climate for the arts, our community prospers. ! ! I want to thank a fantastic board of directors for their vision, leadership, and hard work, as well as the MCA membership and volunteers. A highlight for me was seeing fresh young faces join our board bringing their talent, energy and ideas with them. The future looks amazingly bright.! ! There is more to tell, including and most importantly all of the wonderful things going on in Ocala’s creative community. Take a look at this year’s Cultural Grant awardees and be inspired by what are just a few of the exciting things headed your way. ! ! Areas of challenge remain, and we need your help. What you can share is valuable and there are many ways to show your support. Give of your time. Consider The Brick as a venue for your next occasion. Join. Membership is affordable and has benefits. We were proud to welcome every new and renewing member, including our second Lifetime Member, MCA friend and supporter Irene McCracken. Her leadership gift will inspire others to join, volunteer, give, and become part of an organization that creates positive change. ! ! As I leave the chair I ask you join me in support of our incoming Chairman Angie Lewis in the year ahead, as well as our fabulous team of Paulette, Diane and Ana Dunwoody. Please feel welcome to stop in The Brick and Artful Gifts anytime. Grab a cup of coffee at our Member Bar, enjoy the show, and say “hello”! Perhaps you’ll also be inspired to work with MCA for what I believe will be our best year ever!! Paula King Chairman 2014 Founding Chairman 2001 - 2002 1 mca annual report 2014 Chair-Elect 2015 Angie Lewis! ! “The arts are the best insurance policy a city can take on itself.”! ! --Woody Dumas, former Mayor of Baton Rouge! It’s a real joy to be a part of such a passionate board as MCA. Each board member shares a love of the arts and is committed to enhancing our community. 2014 brought many exciting times for MCA. Brick City Center for the Arts (The Brick) has never been busier or looked better. Artist and community members are renting the space for a variety of shows and events. Paulette Millhorn has done a phenomenal job of promoting what MCA and the Brick have to offer to our community. The board nominating committee brought in three very talented and energetic new board members. Lisa Lombardo, Joanna Spitzer, and Vanessa Jennings bring experience in fund raising, marketing, and event planning.! ! I am honored to have been selected as the Chairman of MCA for the 2015 term. A lot has been accomplished the past few years by board members and volunteers that has provided an incredible foundation for the future of our organization. I am committed to continuing the MCA mission…! ! To be the catalyst and advocate of increased cultural impact in the community, thereby enriching the lives of people through service to member organizations and the general public. We support activities relating to the arts, fine arts, historical and scientific museums, and specific education through grants, advocacy, fundraising, and partnerships.! ! In addition, I feel our presence in downtown Ocala is an important part of the economic development in our city. But the value of the arts extends beyond the direct economic impact. In a three year-year study about the arts and the impact on communities, the question was asked, “What attaches people to their communities?” Researchers found that the key reasons cited by residents for loving their cities were entertainment and social offerings, how welcoming the city is and its aesthetics – in other words, the arts and culture.! ! ! I am excited about working closely with you all this year and making 2015 an amazing year for the Arts in Marion County.! www.mcaocala.com There is more to art than meets the eye. The arts affect us in every aspect of our lives; they challenge us, inspire us, affect our emotions, and feed our creativity.! ! My best,! Angie Lewis! Chair- Elect 2015! ! Advocacy at MCA! MCA is represented by a board member on several art-related committees and boards throughout our community. This allows MCA to have a voice and provide support for our member organizations and a variety of artistic endeavors in Marion County. Currently, we have representation on the Ocala Municipal Arts Commission (OMAC) where we assist in grant making decisions made possible by the revenue generated by the purchase of the “art” license plates. OMAC is also currently working on an art in public spaces project and the Art Depot, an art supply repository for middle and high school teachers. MCA is also a member of the First Friday Art Walk committee and provides input on artist selection and event logistics.! We also provide space at Brick City Center for the Arts (The Brick) and volunteers for registration and whatever else may be needed for this fun and dynamic monthly downtown event! MCA had a jury member for the city sculpture competition and has a member on that committee to provide assistance for the Sculpture Stroll Celebration. MCA works diligently to keep its members informed of legislative decisions that can affect the arts funding in our state and our area and how they can help when needed as well as staying informed as to state grants in which they may be able to participate. ! Respectfully submitted, ! Laurie Zink! Advocacy Chairman! ! 2 mca annual report 2014 www.mcaocala.com Saluting the Arts 2014 - Breakfast In Motion Co-Chairs Rus Adams & Karla Grimsley Saluting the Arts - Breakfast In Motion was more than a breakfast; it was an experience. It started with a rhythmic rumble that drew attendees into the banquet room where the West Port High School Drumline rocked the house. Later we were awed by the beauty of ballet when young dancers from the Performing Arts Conservatory filled the room with motion as they twirled and danced across the floor. Center stage was Horse Fever - In Motion’s Manely Motion, by Linda Ballantine Brown. ! The tables were decorated with sculptures hand-crafted by local artists to keep with the theme. Art lovers, artists and local businesses came together to celebrate how blessed we are to have so many cultural opportunities in Marion County. And then came the main event; the awarding of $16,600 in cultural grants to support those organizations that make it happen. ! ! ! Cultural Grant Awards Presentation! Duke Energy, represented by Amy Mangan, helped present the 2014 Cultural Grant Awards to worthy local organizations that work tirelessly to provide cultural experiences for young and old all year round. MCA salutes these groups that do great things on limited resources so that we have music, theatre, ballet, and visual arts to enhance our community year round. It is for this purpose that MCA exists; to provide support to those who bring us art of all mediums. To date, through the support of this community, the MCA has given $214,600 to assist local art groups. !! Saluting the Arts Sponsors! MCA would like to thank the sponsors of this year’s event for allowing us to be together as we celebrate art and recognize the worthy organizations that bring cultural arts to our community. For those who sponsored this year’s awards breakfast as well as those who support MCA through memberships, annual donations and by attending art events, we are truly grateful. ! Mark Emery and Bruce Mozart ‘wow-ed’ the crowd after the Silver Springs Film Festival. The talent these two artists bring to our community creates a great heritage. Greg Thompson and Nancy Moskovitz were featured in the fall at two separate events. Thank you to everyone who supports the MCA mission with membership. It is always wonderful to have the vote of confidence of renewing members, and we were pleased to welcome new artists, more community friends, and our second Lifetime Member, Irene McCracken to the membership roll. Irene has been a great friend to the arts since the Horse Fever - 10th Anniversary auction when she purchased World Champ by Sharon Crute. We hope others will be inspired by Irene and others. Together, members support and sustain MCA and its mission. ! Stella’s and the Ocala Wine Experience selected wines to match our artist’s personality and we celebrated wine and art. Nancy Moskowitz and Peggy Herrick of Journey Daybook shared about the art and journaling work they have been doing with female inmates at the Florida Women’s Reception Center here in Marion County. Several of the inmates Journey Daybooks were in the gallery to demonstrate art’s healing power. Respectfully submitted, Jessica McCune ! ! Bag It at The Brick A revival of a most popular program of the 1990’s, Bag It at The Brick is a luncheon program where downtown denizens can bring their lunch and enjoy a performance or activity on the 2nd Wednesday of the month. ! The program re-started in August with a performance from Ocala Civic Theatre, followed by Jessica McCune from Ocala Storytelling Guild, Donna Leeward’s artistic journaling class, and a performance of excerpts from “The Nutcracker” by Marion Ballet Theater. ! MCA members enjoy specials offered at local downtown restaurants and the program starts at 12:00 sharp, with a full year of “Bag It” already underway for 2015. ! ! This year we were excited to add value to the membership with many new programs and offerings at our galleries, Brick City Center for the Arts (The Brick) in downtown Ocala, and Artful Gifts in Circle Square Commons at On Top of the World. Members are the first to know about exhibits, happenings and events, like the return of “Bag It at The Brick” at noon on the 2nd Wednesday of every month. Drop in with your lunch and enjoy a performance - it’s free to members and local downtown restaurants have special offers just for MCA members. ! Everyone attending the Annual Holiday Membership Party at The Brick enjoyed a tree filled with a delightful ornament (above) designed by Carlynne Hershberger. This delicious little cookie is the second in our series of collectible Arts Angels, and is given to each new and renewing member. MCA was proud to honor Daryl Collier at the Association of Fund Raising Professionals National Philanthropy Day luncheon. Daryl has been on the downtown scene since the early 1990’s, lending consistent support to the arts and through the process, downtown revitalization. Prior to the formation of MCA, Daryl supported the Ocala Arts & Sciences Coalition (OASC) supporting Brick City Center for the Arts and the Discovery Science Center when they were operated by Central Florida Community College. Daryl is truly an arts enthusiast, and was a regular attendee of Bag It at the Brick. This free luncheon performance was one of the most popular programs at Brick City Center for the arts during that time, and has been revived this year by MCA. Daryl or a member of his CPA firm has been a board member since the 2003. ! Over the years Daryl not only gave of his free time and professional expertise, but made a personal commitment through the purchase of Hi Ho Silver Springs, by Kelli Money Huff from the Horse Fever – In Motion. This horse stands outside of the office of Daryl’s firm, Collier, Jernigan & Goedert, which through donation of their monthly services over a number of years, is one of MCA’s largest contributors. It seems that Daryl is always finding ways to bring culture to light. He has served as a financial sponsor of MCA events and exhibits at Brick City including 2013’s Historical Ocala featuring local artists, authentic Florida cuisine, and speakers from the Marion County Museum of Natural History and Archeology, Ft. King Restoration Society, Silver River Museum, and Historic Ocala Preservation Society, a show he conceived. He now lends more of his time and talent to the Silver Springs International Film Festival, another new and exciting activity centered around Ocala’s history and historic downtown. ! MCA appreciates and is honored to recognize the unceasing and inspiring commitment of this wonderful community volunteer. He makes Ocala a better place to live. ! MCA sponsored one of the sculptures for the Tuscawilla Outdoor Sculpture Competition for the second consecutive year. We are very proud of the great work the City is doing regarding public art. Sponsors support the competition with dollars, docents and providing community art events for the Community Day in the park. Last year we sponsored face painters and the line remained outside the tent all throughout the day. ! !! Respectfully submitted, Jessica McCune ! MCA and the Irish ! The Ultimate Truth by Noah Brock The delegation from Newbridge, Ireland arrived in Ocala last spring for their annual voyage as part of the Twinning of Ocala and Newbridge. Twinning is a European-based, mayor-to-mayor program that fosters friendship and ideas as well as economic, educational and cultural exchanges. One week of activities, city meetings, and educational sharing took place. Marion Cultural Alliance has been hosting an artistic activity for the past two years and this year we enjoyed the fruits of our project, the Art of Making Wine! After making the wine, designing the labels, and allowing the wine to cure for one year, this visit, MCA hosted the Mayors Opening dinner where the Twinning wine and its original label were unveiled. A tasting at the Corkscrew was held prior and many returned to the Corkscrew for music and dancing after a wonderful Latin themed dinner provided by Mojos. A unique treat for our Irish friends! A marvelous evening at The Brick for all! Respectfully submitted, Laurie Zink ! Respectfully submitted, Paula King 9 mca annual report 2014 www.mcaocala.com FAFO Maze First Friday Artwalk ! For the past several years, MCA has participated in FAFO’s Ocala Art Festival by constructing an interactive arts maze. MCA is pleased to be a partner of the First Friday Art Walk of Ocala. This series is managed by a volunteer steering committee consisting of MCA, the City of Ocala, Downtown Business Alliance, Fine Arts for Ocala and the Ocala Civic Theatre. Volunteers contribute over 800 hours each year in executing and planning the nine events. The City of Ocala contributes annually with support services and sponsorship and grant dollars are raised to provide necessary funding for this series. The Art Walk has grown to encompass 15 city blocks and includes over 30 participating restaurants and retail businesses. Currently, over 100 visual artists display their creative talents throughout the season with more than 50 artists attending each monthly event. This regional event attracts approximately 1000 patrons monthly. This is another wonderful example of collaboration bringing art to our community!! ! ! The Maze at FAFO this year was a huge success as we painted the maze with chalkboard paint and kids, big and small, used chalks of all colors to decorate those black boards creating a fun colorful maze for all to enjoy. ! This year we recruited some business with the manpower to repair, paint and build the maze along with a few of our hard working members of the board. Hercules Fence Co dug the holes for the maze posts and broke through the concrete from the old Chamber building that once stood on the lot next to the square making this job so easy! Our heartfelt thanks goes to Randy and Matt from Hercules. Jeff’s Services and Joe Reichel of Damage Control Services and Rus Adams came out to assemble and breakdown the maze in just a few hours with help painting, and manning the maze from Jessica McCune, Jim Hilty, Paulette Millhorn, Vanessa Jennings, Becky McQuade, Angie Lewis, and myself Tammy GriffinVincent, as well as students from West Port High School who kept kids from getting lost in all that chalk!! All in all, it was a great time for everyone. ! Respectfully submitted, Tammy Griffin-Vincent ! ! ! Art in the Attic! ! MCA’s annual art sale is a win-win! Collectors get to share their excess pieces allowing others to build. MCA benefits in the process! Consider making a gift of your Art in the Attic this year. MCA will put the funds to work, and find a great new home for your beloved treasures. ! What’s next for 2015?! It’s all up to YOU!! Join, volunteer or make a contribution.
