LOOK WHAT’S GOING ON AT PVI…
PTO NEWS:
PTO Basket Auction is being held Saturday, March
2, 2013 at PVI (Snow date will be March 9, 2013). Doors
open at 12:00 noon A sheet of tickets costs $7 for 25
chances. Also 50/50 raffle will be offered as well as big ticket
items such as gift cards for $50 to $100 to Wal-Mart, Weis,
Shoprite and Turkey Hill. If you would like to make donations
please feel free to contact anyone from the PVI PTO at
pvipto@pvbears.org.
PVI PTO Members for 2013-14
Sadly, the PVI PTO Board Members will be stepping
down at the end of this school year. The PTO will need
new members for the 2013-2014 school year! The
following positions need to be filled for 2013-2014.

As a board member you are able to stay involved with
your child's education and school. PTO functions create
a wonderful opportunity to "network" with other parents
& teachers.

15th @ 4:30 pm. Additionally, if you are interested in
volunteering, the PTO will need parents to organize

EARLY DISMISSAL
PROCEDURE AT PVI
PVI PAC
PVI’s procedure for early dismissal students:
Homeroom teachers, upon receipt of an early dismissal note, will
complete a PVI pass indicating the early dismissal time, date,
homeroom teacher signature, etc. A completed pass will be
given to the student with direction to that student that he/she is
responsible for giving the pass to the teacher he/she is with at
the time of the early dismissal. The original note will be
forwarded to the office. PVI is asking for parents/guardians to
inform PVI as soon as possible regarding an early dismissal.
The most effective way is to send in a note with your child in the
beginning of the school day. As always, we still offer the
following ways to inform the office: E-mail to
candela.pat@pvbears.org ; Fax – 610-681-8666; or drop off a
note to the main office.
We strongly suggest, when choosing to e-mail the office, include
your child’s team of teachers in the email. Please be sure to
include the child’s name, homeroom teacher, and time of
dismissal, contact phone number, and reason for the early
dismissal. If someone other than the parent or guardian is
picking up the child please indicate that on the note. Also,
whoever is picking up the child must be 18 years of age or
older and must have photo identification available.
Principal’s Advisory Committee meeting is scheduled
for Thursday, April 11, 2013.
This will be an opportunity for parents to give input,
offer feedback, and a time to discuss your ideas to allow for
continuous growth of our students at PVI.
Any parent of a PVI student interested in becoming a
PAC member for the 2012-2013 school year, please call the PVI
office at 570-402-1000 ext. 3003. Unfortunately, childcare will
not be provided, but students may
attend if necessary. Light
refreshments will be served.

PARENT DROP-OFF
We highly recommend that students ride the bus to and
from school. However, we realize that situations may occur that
make riding the bus impossible. In order to make parent drop off
and pick up proceed in a smooth manner, we would like to
remind you of the following information: Students are to report
to school no earlier than 8:47 am when the parent pickup/drop-off doors will be opened, and no later than 9:05 am,
when the doors will be locked. Parents who find it necessary to
drop students off before school must use Driveway B, the 1st
driveway from Burger Hollow Road located on Polk Township
Road. In the morning, parents should proceed along Driveway
B. Upon entering the circular driveway, cars will line up along the
sidewalk area and park. At 8:47 the children will exit the vehicle
and walk along the sidewalk and into the school. Children
cannot be dropped off early and parents are asked to park in a
line. Students are to proceed directly to homeroom. Parents
dropping off students at 9:05 or later must report to the main
office.

PARENT PICK-UP
SPECIAL ACTIVITY PARENT PICK-UP
All notes must be turned in to the office by 2:00 PM
in order to have your child placed on the parent pick up
clipboard. We ask that the notes be provided to your child’s
homeroom teacher. In order to accommodate everyone we
have 3 options:
Fax a note to 610-681-8666;
E-mail a note to candela.pat@pvbears.org ;
Drop off a note to the office.
Please be sure to have the name of the person picking
up the child if other than the parent/guardian. Also, anyone
picking up a student must be at least 18 years of age and
have a valid photo id.
6th grade parents picking up students at the end of
the day should arrive no earlier than 3:15 pm when the parent
pick-up gates will be opened.

pick-up/drop-off area, park along
the driveway, and walk to the
Parent Pick-Up doors. Parents
for 6th grade students will still be
required to park in an orderly
fashion along the outer
perimeter of the circle. Parking
along the inner perimeter is not permitted.
Parents of 4th and 5th grade students ONLY will park
in open parking spaces in the Main Parking Lot at the end by the
water tower and enter the doors marked W2. This is the hallway
leading to the Music Rooms
Parents will be required to enter and leave the parking
lot in a safe and orderly fashion by using the main driveway.
Entering the parking lot at the first entrance will not be allowed
as it will create a hazard and interfere with the buses picking up
by the main entrance.
Once entering the school through doors marked W2, 4th
th
and 5 grade students may be picked-up in the gymnasium,
down the hall on the right side.
Those parents that are picking up multiple students can
choose either location for pick up. First Student cannot transport
students to locations other than their designated bus stops.
Notes to ride another bus or use another stop will not be
accepted by Administration or the bus driver. Parents must
arrange their own transportation if a student needs to be picked
up or dropped off somewhere other than their regular bus stop.
You may also reference to page 56 in the StudentParent Handbook.
Students participating in after school activities are
required to submit a permission note identifying the
coach/advisor, the activity, time and date and
parent/guardian signature. This note is to be given to the
homeroom teacher. One note for the season will be sufficient.
All students that are being picked up for a special activity will
need to report to the Auxiliary Gym
when the announcement is made.
Students who do not have a note on
file will not be permitted to participate
in the activity and will be directed to
their designated bus. Coaches and
advisors are directed to provide the
office with a list of children who are on
their team or in their group (this will not
substitute as a parent note). It is the student’s responsibility
to report to the special activity pick-up area, they will not be
called from their classroom or bus.
ANTI-BULLYING
Name calling, teasing, and harassment are not part of a
respectful environment, nor do these behaviors contribute to a
school environment that is conducive to learning. At the
beginning of the 2012-2013 school year, all PVI homeroom
teachers prepared and presented a lesson designed to increase
student awareness of bullying behaviors and the implications of
being involved in bullying or harassment situations. Anti-bullying
lessons were again conducted during the month of January.
If your child is experiencing a problem with another
student, he or she may report it to any teacher, guidance
counselor, administrator, or fill out an appointment request form.
As a parent, you may contact the school to report this as well. At
PVI, our goal is for all of our students to come to school feeling
safe and focused on academics. Therefore, we investigate all
reports and do our best to resolve problems between students.

SCHOOL STORE HOURS
PVI SPRING PHOTO DAY
Christmas City Studio will be at PVI on Wednesday, March
6th. No money is due on picture day. Two weeks after Picture Day,
order forms with your child’s picture on it will be sent home. Ordering
instructions will be included. Payment is due by Tuesday, April 3rd.
Picture packages ordered will be delivered to the school around
Thursday, April 19th.
Students will be given the opportunity to wear alternate
TOPS ONLY of different colors/patterns for their spring photos.
Standardized dress code will remain in effect, e.g., no jeans,
appropriate dress/skirt length, no sleeveless tops, no t-shirts,
appropriate footwear.

PSSA INFORMATION
Parents are reminded the Pennsylvania System of School Assessment (PSSA) will be taken by PVI students, grades
4, 5, and 6 beginning April 8th and ending April 19th. All students will be assessed in reading and math. Calculators
may be used on the majority of the math assessment, therefore, it is important for students to be familiar with
the calculator they use on the PSSA. If your child has his/her own calculator, we recommend bringing it to school.
This will give him/her an opportunity to practice with it during classroom activities.
PSSA Testing
Writing PSSA
(Grades 5)
In addition to the ELA Field Test, students in Grade 5 will also be participating in the Writing PSSA. The Writing Assessment
will be administered to fifth grade students between March 11th and the 15th.
Reading and Math PSSA
(Grades 4, 5, & 6)
The Reading and Math PSSA will be taken by all PVI students (Grades 4, 5, & 6) beginning April 8 th and ending April 19th.
Make-up tests will be completed the week of April 29th through May 3rd. Parents are reminded that attendance is very
important throughout the entire testing window. Calculators may be used on the majority of the math assessment;
therefore, it is important for students to be familiar with the calculator they will use on the PSSA. If your child has his/her
own calculator, we recommend bringing it to school. This will give students the opportunity to practice with it during
classroom activities. Please encourage your child to get plenty of sleep each night before the test and remember to provide
them with a nutritious breakfast on the mornings of the assessment.
Science PSSA
(Grade 4)
PVI students in Grade 4 will also be participating in the Science PSSA. The Science Assessment will be administered to
fourth grade students between April 22nd and the 26th

PSSA TESTING TIPS FOR PARENTS
The following are tips that will help your child do his or her best throughout the testing period.
 Make sure your child is well-rested. Set an earlier bedtime throughout the testing period.
 Avoid undue stress if possible. A stress free, calm child is more successful.
 Make sure your child has plenty of time to get ready for school in the morning. Being tardy for
school and walking in late makes for a stressful situation for a child.
 All testing is done in the morning. Be sure to schedule any necessary doctor or dentist appointments
late in the day so as not to interfere with the assessments.
 Provide encouragement, but don’t put excessive pressure on your child.
 Remind your child to take his or her time when completing the test, as it is not timed.
 Your child looks to you as a role model. Have a positive attitude towards the test and your child will
too!
MORE PSSA INFO…
The information obtained from the assessment serves as a valuable tool for planning future school
programs, developing curriculum, in-service training of staff, and informing the public about student
achievement. Also, the assessments will yield individual student reports, as well as school, district, and
state data.
The PSSA will challenge all students with tasks requiring problem solving and concept identification.
In addition to multiple-choice items, there are tasks requiring students to write their responses in
paragraph form. PVI teachers have spent significant time and energy focusing on PSSA skill instruction
and test taking preparation.
Attendance for the PSSA is very important. We ask that you do not schedule appointments or
vacations on the testing days. Although make-up sessions will be administered, students tend to feel more
comfortable when they test with the class. Parents can reassure their children that the PSSA gives them
the opportunity to demonstrate their reading and math knowledge. Please encourage them to get plenty of
sleep the night before and provide them with a nutritious breakfast on the mornings of the assessment.

March 7, 2013. The PA Department of Education website is: www.education.state.pa.us This website
provides sample test items and information that should help answer any questions relating to the
assessment. If you should have additional questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.

DRESS CODE REMINDERS
 Please remember logos may not be worn on tops or bottoms. PV
patches are available for $1.00. These may be used to cover logos
on clothing. If you are in need of patches, please contact the main
office.
 Students may not wear pants tucked inside their boots.
 Short or long sleeved t-shirts may not be worn over collared shirts.
 Skirts and shorts must come to the knee. Cargo shorts are not
permitted. Please keep this in mind as you plan for spring.
 Sneakers must be of dress code compliant colors of Black, Brown,
Tan, Gray (not silver), Blue or White and may have one minor accent
color (e.g., piping or stripe(s) on shoe that is of an other than
compliant color). The entire shoe cannot be striped. Shoe laces
must be of the same solid dress code compliant predominate color
as the sneakers or White.
 Footwear can have a manufacturer’s logo as long as that logo is not
contrary to the mission of the school; and/or advertises or
promotes the use of tobacco, alcohol, or drugs; and/or is deemed
offensive, obscene, or immoral; or which is sexually suggestive;
and/or which promotes statements which are derogatory to any
racial, ethnic, or religious group; and/or which contains double
meaning, advocates violent acts, or is gang-related.
 Footwear cannot have a pattern, picture, drawing, diagram or
decorative item(s).

PRINCIPALS’ CORNER
Principal’s Corner
Let’s hope that March goes the way the saying goes…It comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb. With that being said, I
am sure we are all looking forward to the first day of spring followed by the Spring Recess.
It will be interesting to see the outcome of the Russell C. Hughes Spelling Bee. PVI 5th and 6th grade students were selected in
the beginning of January and competed in the first round in the end of January. In February, the second round took place for
finalists in grades 5 through 8. The top five finalists from this round will be sent onto the final round and represent Pleasant
Valley in all of Monroe County. We are PV proud!
Each marking period, teachers nominate students for SOMP (Student of the Marking Period), Effort awards, BUG (Bring Up
Grades) awards (5th and 6th grades), and TAP (Turn Around Progress) awards (4th grade). Students are recognized for their
efforts during team assemblies with their grade level guidance counselor and administration.
Report cards were sent home on February 7th and before you know it, progress reports will be sent home in the beginning of
March. HAC (Home Access Center), the parent portal is available 24/7 for parents and guardians to review their child’s
progress throughout each marking period.
Everyone is invited to attend our monthly PAC (Principal’s Advisory Committee) meetings. Parents are welcome to bring any
thoughts, suggestions, ideas or concerns to the meeting. These meetings are usually held at 6:00 PM on the 3rd Thursday of
the month, although our next meeting will not be held until April 11th in the PVI library. As an added bonus…light
refreshments are served during the meetings.
Once again this year, our PVI Physical Education teachers will be supporting the “Hoops for Heart” campaign during the
week of March 4th – 11th. Students participate in this program during their physical education class consisting of various
basketball activities. All students are encouraged to collect donations to help support the American Heart Association.
And last, but certainly not least, along with spring rolling around, it’s PSSA time. 4th and 5th grade completed the ELA (English
Language Arts) Field Test in February. In March, grade 5 will complete the PSSA Writing, and in April, grades 4, 5 and 6 will
complete the PSSA Math and Reading. Also in April, 4th grade will complete the PSSA Science. Please look for more specific
information regarding PSSA’s within this newsletter.

Weller Health Tip for Teens: 5 Ways to Spot a Fad Diet
Lots of today's popular diets take advantage of our desire to drop weight quickly. Unfortunately, though, "quick-fix" diets don't work.
Here are 5 clues that a diet may be more about empty promises than real results:
1. The diet is based on drastically cutting back calories. Starvation-type diets that require the body to fast often promise quick
results. But our bodies simply aren't designed to drop pounds quickly. In fact, doctors say it's nearly impossible for a healthy, normally
active person to lose more than 2 to 3 pounds per week of actual fat, even on a starvation diet.
Here's the trick that very low-calorie diets rely on: The body's natural reaction to near-starvation is to dump water. So most, if not all,
of the weight lost on quick-weight-loss diets is not fat - it's just water. And the body sucks this lost water back up like a sponge once a
person starts eating normally again.
2. The diet is based on taking special pills, powders, or herbs. These are usually just gimmicks - and the only thing they slim down is
your wallet.
Many diet pills contain laxatives or diuretics that force a person's body to eliminate more water. Just like restricted-calorie diets, the
weight lost with these supplements is mostly water, not fat.
Other supplements claim that their ingredients speed up metabolism; suppress appetite; orblock the absorption of fat, sugars, or
carbohydrates. For most diet supplements, there's no reliable scientific research to back up their claims. And doctors consider diet
supplements risky for teens because not much is known about how the ingredients affect the growing body.
3. The diet tells you to eat only specific foods or foods in certain combinations. There's no reliable scientific proof that combining
certain foods works. And limiting the foods you eat means you might not get all the nutrition you need.
4. The diet makes you completely cut out fat, sugar, or carbs. Depriving our bodies of needed food groups is a bad idea (especially
when they're still growing). It's better to eat smaller portions in well-rounded meals (meals that contain servings of protein, grains,
fruits, and veggies). When your body gets the right balance of nutrition, it's less likely to send you willpower-busting cravings! Eating
smaller portions also helps you set good eating habits that will help you keep the weight off.
5. The diet requires you to skip meals or replace meals with special drinks or food bars. As with diets that ban certain food groups,
skipping or substituting meals can mean you don't get the nutrition needed to support healthy development. Plus, you miss out on
the enjoyment of sharing a satisfying meal with friends or family.

Mobile Dentist-Scheduled April 2nd and 3rd at PVI, Mobile Dentist permission forms were sent home with students in
February. Extra Mobile Dentist permission forms are available in the nursing office. Please return permission forms by
March 15, 2013.
Clothing-Please return borrowed clothing from nursing office. If your student borrows clothing from the nursing office
please remember to wash and return the item of clothing as soon as possible.
Physical Exam-All 6th grade and new student’s physical exam forms should be returned to the nursing office.
Immunizations-Please send a copy of all new immunizations your child has received in the past year to allow the nurse to
update your child’s health records.
Medication Forms-If your child is going to receive medication during school hours, the medication form needs to be signed
by your physician and signed by a parent/guardian. All medication needs to be brought to school by a parent/guardian in
the original container. Students may carry emergency medications (Epi-pens, inhalers) only if the physician has indicated on
the medication form student may carry and self-administer or just may carry not self-administer.

PHOTO ID REQUIRED FOR VISITATIONS AND CONFERENCES
It is the policy of the Pleasant Valley School District that parents/guardians are welcome to visit. To visit classes and teachers, 24 hours notice
to the school is needed and such visits must be pre-arranged and approved by the school. Parents/guardians are not permitted to go directly to the
classroom. This procedure enables us to monitor who comes into the building, thus ensuring your child’s safety. All visitors shall display a school districtissued temporary identification badge, hereinafter known as a Visitor Badge, while they are in a Pleasant Valley School District building during regular
school hours whether or not there are students within that building at the time of the visit. This pertains to, but is not limited to; all individuals who are not
school employees including delivery personnel, sales persons and construction or repair workers. No Visitor Badge will be required at sporting events,
open houses, or other events as determined by the building and/or school district administration. All visitors, upon entering any school district building or
facility, are to report immediately to the main office or other designated reception area. Visitors who do not comply with this directive will be escorted
from the property. Employees who observe someone entering school district facilities without wearing proper identification are required to confront that
person or immediately report this circumstance to the administration or a member of the security staff. Visitors, after reporting to the main office or other
designed reception area, will register (providing at a minimum: name, date, time of arrival and departure, who is being visited, and nature of business)
and as is applicable, will be given a Visitor Badge. Visitors are required to submit a driver’s license or other government issued photo I.D. (e.g.,
passport, etc.) to the designed receptionist to assure proper identification and check-out by the visitor. The I.D. shall be retained at the designed
reception area. Visitors who fail to submit proper I.D. will not be permitted entry into the school facility. Upon return of the Visitor Badge, the visitor(s)
will have their I.D. returned. The Visitor Badge is to be worn at or above the waist and in clear view at all times. The Visitor Badge is valid only for the
date of issuance. No visitor may confer with a student in school without the approval of the school principal. Should an emergency require that a
student be called to the school office to meet a visitor, the principal shall determine the parameters by which such a meeting shall take place in
accordance with applicable school policies and procedures as well as state and federal laws and regulations. Visitors are not permitted to wander
through the building, but must report, or be escorted to, the area identified as acceptable for visitation and then back to the main office or other
designated reception area. You may also reference page 45 in the Student-Parent Handbook.

SCHOOL CLOSINGS/DELAYS/EARLY DISMISSALS
There are times that, as a result of inclement weather or a failure in the power and/or heating systems of the schools, or for other
emergency/safety concerns, it is necessary to close the schools of the school district either before the school day has begun or during the school day. If
there is a need to enact a closing, announcements will be made immediately through the appropriate media and a Connect-Ed automated phone
message will be generated. Students and their parent(s)/guardian(s) can also tune in to local radio or TV stations for this information.
Parent(s)/Guardian(s) of students should also pay particular attention to possible delays in bus pick-ups, late arrivals home, or early dismissals and are
responsible to listen to public announcements regarding weather emergencies. Please refrain from contacting the school office or central administration
to obtain information regarding school closures or early dismissals.
Also, parent(s)/guardian(s) are responsible to develop a plan for dealing with instances where children will be dismissed early from school and
to inform their children about what to do or where to go in the case of an early dismissal. This should be done early in the school year so that all children
are properly prepared for early dismissal at any time.

Please remember it is extremely important to report any telephone number changes in writing to the main office and to your child’s teacher. All
updates are necessary so the Connect-Ed automated phone system can work efficiently. This phone system notifies parents/guardians of important
