Since taking over the lead role in April, one of the things Michalski has been focusing on is a 90-day plan targeting two of RiverView’s six pillars of excellence: Finance and People. Of course the Finance Pillar is always on the radar. It’s no secret that an organization needs a positive operating budget to keep things running smoothly. “RiverView’s goal is to achieve a total margin of at least 2 percent,” Michalski stated. The other pillar that has her attention right now is the People Pillar. Michalski’s focus is on ensuring that RiverView Health is the best place to work and the best place for providers to practice medicine. RiverView has a goal of 75 percent for employees who are “completely satisfied’’ or “satisfied’’ with their roles at RiverView. That percentage is currently at 74.8, up from last year’s 70.0 percent. Michalski credits RiverView’s Senior Leadership Team for its strength in moving RiverView through today’s ever-changing healthcare world. That team has seen some changes recently, as well. RiverView’s Memory Care Center moves forward with Expansion, Quality Care Green grass can be seen through the big, beautiful windows of the two newest rooms of RiverView Health’s Memory Care Center. Sunshine streams in highlighting the freshly painted walls, while the peace and quiet of nature sits right outside those windows. The rooms are sparkling-clean, equipped with furniture, and just waiting for their new occupants. RiverView’s Memory Care Center is in the final stages of going from a 22 bed facility to a 24 unit facility. The expansion of the memory care program is much needed, according to local statistics that report a shortage of memory care beds in our area. “Specializing in memory care allows RiverView Health to address an identified community need,’’ said Kalie Crayton, activities director/social services designee at the Memory Care Center. “I get about a call a week from various healthcare providers in the area looking for placement for someone who requires the support of a memory care unit. We look forward to being able to meet the needs of two additional residents.’’ RiverView Health operates a premiere memory care program with highly trained, dementia certified care givers in the 2003 Care Center addition on the main RiverView campus in Crookston. The two new rooms are located at the end of the Center by the activity room. The atmosphere at the Memory Care Center provides a comfortable, neighborhood feel with all private rooms, centralized dining and gathering spaces, and accessible bathroom facilities to accommodate handicapped individuals. Crayton lists the low stimulation environment, locked doors for safety of wandering residents and the great staff as highlights of the Center. Adding to the Family She is excited about the expansion and the programs taking place. “I’m so pleased by the Memory Care Center,’’ she stated. “The staff takes such pride in how well the residents are cared for. And to be able to add two more residents to our family is really a wonderful thing.’’ Crayton, herself, is fairly new to the RiverView family. She joined RiverView in January. She has an Associate’s Degree from the Occupational Therapy Assistant Program at Northland Community and Technical College in East Grand Forks. She was just recently certified. The mother of five and Fisher native, also recently completed Kalie Crayton a certification program for social service designees through the Missouri Long Term Care Association. The purpose of the program is for participants to receive training and insight to working in the social service department of a long term care facility. The training prepares non-licensed social workers to assume the role of social service designee in the skilled nursing facility setting. The training focuses on the philosophy of long term care, the settings in which a social service designee works and the demographics of the people they serve. Students learn the aging process, the performance skills of the social service designee and understand the role and function of the position. Crayton and Shana Lanctot, director of nursing for the Care Center, are also going through a dementia care certification program through Aging Services of Minnesota. Highest Quality of Care Along with the facility expansion and Crayton’s new leadership, RiverView Health’s Memory Care Center also recently joined the Stratis Health Acting Together to Achieve Excellence campaign (ATTAX). RiverView is participating in this campaign designed to ensure that every nursing home resident receives the highest quality of care. The ATTAX campaign instills quality and performance improvement practices aimed at attacking and eliminating healthcare acquired conditions and improving resident satisfaction in Minnesota nursing homes. Supporting the development of strategies for overall quality is at the heart of this work as well as specific emphasis and resources on improving dementia care and preventing pressure ulcers, falls and urinary tract infections. Successes and best practices from the group will be shared with the Minnesota nursing home community over the next few years. “By choosing to participate in this campaign, we are making a bold statement about our dedication to quality improvement within the Care Center,’’ said Lanctot. “One of the most encouraging aspects of participation from the start has been how many of the strategies we are already doing. And through this campaign we are learning new strategies to improve upon the exceptional care our residents already receive daily.’’ Staff at the Care Center is also participating in “Hand in Hand: A Training Series for Nursing Homes Toolkit’’ through the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, Lanctot reported. This is a high-quality training program that emphasizes individualized care of people with dementia and the prevention of abuse. RiverView Recovery Center Amps up Outpatient Services A lot is happening at RiverView Recovery Center. First off, the name. RiverView Recovery Center is not a new entity. It was formerly Glenmore Recovery Center. The name has been changed, along with a restructuring of programs that will now allow patients the ability to receive high-caliber clinical care while maintaining commitments to work, family and home. Individual Care: This level of care is provided to those individuals that have completed a higher level of outpatient services but require additional care. This is often required when a person presents with clinically significant issues that require further attention. Individually determined one hour sessions, once weekly, duration of up to 3 months. Driving with Care (DWC); Driving While Impaired (DWI) education: RiverView has three certified DWC facilitators that provide a cognitive-behavioral treatment course for DWI offenders. A level 1 education program is provided for first time DWI offenders. Outpatient services have now been enhanced and expanded at all of RiverView Recovery’s locations: Crookston, East Grand Forks, Roseau and Thief River Falls. “I am really excited about our expanding outpatient services,’’ said Michael Cory, lisensed alcohol and drug councelor at Crookston’s RiverView Recovery Center. “There is a lot of change in the chemical dependency field right now and I feel that we are out ahead of it. We, at RiverView, are not simply reacting to inevitable change, we are responding to it in a proactive fashion. We are not waiting to follow others, we are in many respects on the leading edge of this change and that is an exciting prospect.’’ RiverView Recovery Center provides outpatient treatment programs for adults who are abusing or dependent on one or more mood-altering chemicals. Treatments include: Day Treatment: This program serves individuals that meet criteria for a substance-use disorder that do not require 24 hour monitoring, yet require more than an intensive outpatient program. Day Treatment is 5 days a week from 8 am to noon each weekday. Day treatment includes education; individual, group and family counseling. Duration is 4 weeks, Monday through Friday, for 80 hours. Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP): The IOP program is less intense than the Day Treatment Program. It is a minimum of 9 hours of service per week. Individuals in the IOP program will participate in individual, group and family counseling. Duration is 6-8 weeks, 3 hours per session, 3 times a week. Relapse Prevention: This program provides care to individuals that have completed a higher level of care and require on-going services to strengthen skills and insight. Duration is 12 weeks, once weekly for 2 hours. Rule 25: Alcohol and Drug Assessments: Each of RiverView’s licensed counselors provide Rule 25 assessments on a weekly basis. Rule 25 assessments are generally for people seeking to know if they are drug or alcohol dependent and what treatment options are available. Emergency assessments are also available. Family Program: This program entails inviting loved ones of those in treatment to take part in an educational program to learn more about addiction, recovery, and the ways in which everyone in an addict’s circle of friends and family can be impacted by addiction. “There is a growing awareness of the impact of addiction on family members and friends,’’ stated Family Program Counselor Gary Lindsey, who will conduct family sessions at all four of RiverView Recovery’s locations. “It truly is a family disease.” Lindsey’s best advice for families dealing with addiction is to get into Al-Anon as soon as possible. “There is help available. There is hope. You are not alone.” Also incorporated into these programs will be education on nutrition, financial health, fitness, occupational therapy and a variety of other topics.
