STGMA GOSPEL NOTES A Monthly Newsletter Service of South Texas Gospel Music Association Founded in 1999 by Billy & Janet Miller Volume 15, Issue 9 – October & November 2013 WELCOME BACK THE AWARD-WINNING QUARTET RETURNS TO THE ASSOCIATION Paul’s Journey is once again a member of South Texas Gospel Music Association. The Houston-based quartet holds the distinction of having been voted STGMA Group of the Year twice, while members of the group have been the recipients of the STGMA Male Vocalist of the Year Award a total of five times. Paul’s Journey is currently comprised of Rod Treme, Joe Kitson, Stan Watson, and Dodd Meadows. Bass singer Treme founded The Relations Quartet in 1977 and quickly developed a devoted following—enjoying numerous gospel music chart hits. In 2007, the group was named the SGM FanFair ‘s ‘Group of the Year.’ The following year (in 2008) , the group changed its name to Paul’s Journey and expanded its ministry across the United States. As recording artists for Inspire Music, Paul’s Journey was nominated for "Horizon Group of the Year" by gospel music fans across the nation. The terms “entertaining”, “uplifting” and “ministryminded” are frequently used to describe the music of Paul’s Journey today. With its blend of up-tempo songs and heart-felt ballads, the group has been a long-time favorite of South Texas gospel music fans. We welcome Paul’s Journey back to STGMA and its gospel music roots. STGMA ‘GAITHER-STYLE’ FALL JAMBOREE - OCTOBER 26 Pacesetters Quartet, The Pearsons, Western Sonrise & 11 Other Acts By Gerald Lyda KIRBY---STGMA has presented three fundraisers each year to benefit the STGMA General Fund. The STGMA Gaither-Style Fall Jamboree fundraiser will be held at Kirby Baptist Church on Saturday, October 26. The church is located at 5114 Old Seguin Road in Kirby, Texas 78219 from 1 pm to 5 pm. At press time, the following STGMA artists & groups were scheduled to perform: Jacob Austin Band of College Station - The Arnharts of League City - Megan Cox of Luling - Joyce Emily of LaVernia - Fay Gassner of Stockdale - Gene & LaVada of Blanco - His Word of Natalia - Lilly Hutton of Comfort - Robert Lanning Family of Cibolo - Dave Nuttall of San Antonio – Pacesetters Quartet of Benbrook – The Pearsons of Lumberton – Logan Pettis of St. Joseph, MO - Eve Wallace of San Antonio – Pat Hutchings of Winnie Western Sonrise of Blanco - Phil Williams of Manor – Dave Nuttall of San Antonio - Tommy Clark of Copperas Cove. Gospel music singer/songwriters and music entrepreneurs Bill & Gloria Gaither are most closely associated with this type of concert in which performers are seating in the choir area—facing the audience. Each artist or group will be called upon to perform familiar gospel songs—with the audience singing along on the chorus. The Gaither-Style events have been warmly received by gospel music fans and have become a staple of the concert season. Thanks to all artists & groups who will be performing at this the final Gaither-Style event for 2013. As always, STGMA members performing have graciously donated their time and talent to benefit the STGMA General Fund. If you haven’t previously attended a Gaither-Style fundraiser , make plans to catch the October 26 event. You just might be one of the many people in the audience who find themselves clapping along with the music throughout the afternoon of a family fun & Praise-filled music. Several churches have invited us to take advantage of their facilities for concerts in 2014. This is truly a blessing, because it gives us an opportunity to schedule concerts in various areas of San Antonio. We have come to realize many of our supporters have issues driving long distances in San Antonio traffic. Having more than one or two locations to hold concerts gives an opportunity to bless a broader base of folks that otherwise might not be afforded the privilege of hearing God's word in song. I would like to take this opportunity on behalf of the entire leadership team to express a big "THANK YOU" for your support of STGMA. Without your faithfulness and the support of the churches that believe there is a cause, STGMA would not be able to invite our Artists Members to come to San Antonio or to have these concerts. DENNIS REHDERS & FAITHFUL 2 RETURN TO SAN ANTONIO FOR NOV. 23 CONCERT SAN ANTONIO—STGMA will present “An Evening of Southern Gospel Music” at First Baptist Church – Schertz on Saturday, November 23 at 6 pm.. Featured at the concert will be Dennis Rehders of Lampasas who has been touring extensively throughout Southern United States. One of the most popular STGMA performing artists, Dennis has overcome some difficult times, including the loss of his beloved wife, Alice, but is now back on the road preaching and singing the praises of the Lord. Opening for Dennis will be Faithful 2 of Channelview who for the past few years have expanded their music ministry into Tennessee and Virginia. STGMA gospel fans are looking forward to welcoming Dennis Rehders and Faithful 2 back to South Texas. CELEBRATES 9TH YEAR OF MINISTRY WORK – OCTOBER 27 By Gerald Lyda SAN ANTONIO, TX – The Praise Incorporated ministry was launched in October, 2004 by Steve Sam. The Benbrook-based Southern Gospel quartet has been spreading God’s word for nine consecutive years--bringing encouragement into the lives of those who hear God’s word through spoken word and music. A special anniversary concert will be held at First Baptist Church in White Settlement, TX on Saturday, October 26. Joining them will be Paul’s Journey of Magnolia & The Torres Family of Wichita Falls, KS. The group is comprised of founder and lead singer Steve Sam of Benbrook; tenor Don Thomas of Mobile, AL; baritone Mark Sargent of Fort Worth & bass singer Nolin Calicutt of Arp. The group will be performing at a special STGMA benefit concert on Saturday, December 7 which will follow the STGMA Christmas banquet at Kirby Baptist Church. They have been regular guests on the Grapevine Opry and have been featured on the Gospel Music Television series, ‘Jammin’ for Jesus’ which is recorded at the Mansion America Theater in Branson, MO..
