BUSINESS OR PLEASURE?
DID YOU KNOW:
Wisconsin Dells’ popularity as a wholesome tourism town – a popularity with provenance – has turned into a nice calling card for groups.
For the meetings and conventions crowd, the local culture
of entrepreneurism is inspiring. For social groups like
motorcoach tours and family reunions, Wisconsin Dells
is a place to collect authentic experiences. For youth and
adult amateur athletes, it’s the community’s ability to
attract a high level of competition that scores big points.
Oh, and we have some pretty wonderful facilities too.

About the Ice Age Trail Alliance
The mission of the Ice Age Trail Alliance is to create and protect
the thousand-mile footpath tracing Ice Age formations across
Wisconsin as a place where people can find physical and mental
renewal in a peaceful setting and an enduring spiritual
connection to the land. Thousands of volunteers contribute
tens of thousands of hours each year to this national scenic trail.
MEETING SPACES AS BIG AS ALL OUTDOORS
Take it outside.
While that phrase could be misconstrued as fighting words, for anyone planning a meeting in Wisconsin Dells it’s actually a hugely welcome piece of advice.
Moving a meeting from a room with four walls to one that’s as big as the outdoors can inspire mind, body and spirit, which is, not coincidentally, one of the big
trends in business travel. In the Dells, natural spaces are plentiful, pristine and powerfully motivating.
One group that knows about the power of natural
spaces is the Ice Age Trail Alliance, and last
year the organization held its annual meeting in
Wisconsin Dells. As you’d imagine, this is not a
group given to sitting in chairs all day.
“Some of the most meaningful conversations
happen when we’re on a scheduled hike to stretch
our legs,” said Mike Wollmer, Executive Director of
the Wisconsin chapter. “In this part of the state,
you are just minutes to remarkable places.”
Then there is the Alliance’s version of a “listening
session,” during which members maintain silence
from the time they get off the bus until they return.
WISDELLS.COM •
(800) 223-3557
“We hike in, disperse, find a comfortable spot,
and take the time to ponder,” said Wollmer. “When
we get back to the bus, that’s when we share our
ideas.”
Wollmer also extolled the virtues of all four seasons
when taking a meeting outdoors. “Summer is more
intimate with everything leafed out, while in the
winter you can see the landscapes better.”
The group also held an evening “Trail Mix,” with
10 different activities going on at once and people
choosing what they were most interested in. Home
base was the Wintergreen Resort & Conference
Center. “They’re pros and very accommodating,
especially when it came to meals, with the chef
preparing special dishes for our large contingent
of vegetarians,” noted Luke Kloberdanz, the
Outreach and Education Manager for the Alliance
and also responsible for meeting planning.
The key takeaway from this particular gathering?
Consider holding a meeting in a place that
challenges your mind to understand the natural
world and engages your body to action.
Turn to page 91 for a complete guide to the variety
of traditional and non-traditional meeting spaces
in the Dells. n

A BUCKET LIST GETAWAY
FOR THE AGES
Everyone’s together. Each family member is collecting memories they’ll call their own. Age becomes irrelevant. Eight, 18 or 80, it doesn’t matter.
Everyone senses this time is special, maybe even once-in-a-lifetime.
Welcome to the “multi-generational bucket list
getaway.” And yes, it’s a thing. Think of it as the
opposite of holding a potluck family reunion at
grandma’s house, not that there’s anything wrong
with that. It’s just that a bucket list getaway
checks off lots of boxes on the “creating incredible
family memories” agenda by planning a trip that
goes all out.
WISCONSIN DELLS COULD BE YOUR
BUCKET LIST DESTINATION. IT EASILY
MEETS THE BASIC CRITERIA:
• Centrally located in the heartland, a plus for
far-flung families.
• Natural beauty, with the Wisconsin River, sandstone bluffs, rolling hills and pine forests.
WISDELLS.COM •
(800) 223-3557
• Tons to do, hello “The Waterpark Capital
of the World!®”.
• Good value for the dollar, a plus when what
you’re after is something more aspirational.
• Most importantly, experiences you won’t find
anywhere else.
So, what would a multi-generational bucket list
getaway in Wisconsin Dells look like? Feast your
eyes on this.
ACCOMMODATIONS:
Choose a fully appointed waterpark resort condo,
lakeside or riverside vacation home, or high-end
cabin in the woods. A new option from Kalahari
Resorts & Conventions, their Lake Delton
Waterfront Villas, are located on Lake Delton
and feature the largest private beach on the lake.
Among the units there the Waterfront Retreat
provides the most space with room for 20. When
not on the beach, use your complimentary passes
to the Kalahari Resort Waterparks. Nearby Baker’s
Sunset Bay Resort has long catered to family
groups and reunions. Meadowbrook Resort is
oh-so-close to the downtown river district but feels
like it is tucked into the northwoods. Spring Brook
Resort has 65 full-furnished homes and cabin
rentals with the largest sleeping 18, plus the complex includes a restaurant, golf course, two fishing
lakes, indoor and outdoor pools and a game room.
The condos at Chula Vista Resort Condominiums
and the cabins at the Wilderness Hotel & Golf
Resort are tops for special family getaways too.
For a wide variety of vacation home rentals, talk to
Sand County Service Company. Flip to page 127 to
see the full list of accommodations in the area.

Tommy Bartlett Show
Double Cut Charcoal Grill/Liquor Bar
ADVENTURE:
Thrill seekers can head to Mt. Olympus Water &
Theme Park to ride roller coasters such as Hades
360º, Zeus, Cyclops, Pegasus and the Manticore.
Zip through the trees at one of the three zipline
outfitters in town. Horseback ride at Canyon
Creek Riding Stables where you can see scenic
waterfalls and an array of wildlife. One of the most
adventurous things to do in the Dells? Take a turn
on a trapdoor waterslide. The first one built in the
Dells is at Noah’s Ark Waterpark and it’s called
Scorpion’s Tail, plus there are trapdoor slides
at the indoor and outdoor waterparks of the big
resorts like Wilderness Hotel & Golf Resort and
Kalahari Resorts & Conventions.
SHOPPING:
Plan a family portrait at one of the old-time
portrait studios like Old Abe’s Old Time Portraits,
Capone’s Original Old Time Picture Studio or Prof.
Porter’s Old Time Portraits. Souvenir shopping
across the generations
is a must. Think
moccasins, fun
picture frame,
warm Wisconsin
Dells hoodie, wood
carving or maybe
even a piece of Native
American art. You can
never go wrong with treats. Take home some
fudge, a caramel apple, savory popcorn or even a
whole cheesecake – you won’t think it’s silly when
it comes time to share!
ONE-OF-A-KIND:
Here in the Dells it is a common phenomenon for
grandparents and parents to share the experiences they had many years ago with the next
generation. One of those easy-to-share experiences is the Tommy Bartlett Show, one of the last
professional water ski shows of its kind in the
country. The show has been entertaining audiences for over 60 years. The gadgets, gizmos and
interactive science exhibits at the Tommy Bartlett
Exploratory – Interactive Science Center are as
much fun for the grandparents as they are for the
kids. The Wisconsin Deer Park is more than just a
petting zoo. Take the family and wander through
the scenic park while tame white tail deer munch
crackers right from your hand. At
Timbavati Wildlife Park the wildlife
nursery is a big hit, as well as
feeding the giraffes and camels.
There’s also Circus World in nearby
Baraboo with a colossal collection of more than 200 restored
antique circus wagons.
A CLASSIC:
Take a Wisconsin River cruise by tour boat, Duck,
jet boat, or paddlewheeler; the choice is yours. The
cliff formations are a sight to behold. Show your
competitive side with a little mini-golf. Pirate’s
Cove Adventure Golf has a whopping five courses
with 91 holes while Timber Falls Adventure Park has
four courses set right on the rugged shady terrain of
the river. Challenge the family to put the pedal to the
metal at one of the go-kart courses in town.
DINING:
For the last night of your getaway, make
reservations at a supper club. Heck, even dress
for dinner. House of Embers, Ishnala Supper Club,
Field’s at the Wilderness, Del-Bar, Kaminski’s
Chop House at Chula Vista Resort, and Double
Cut Charcoal Grill/Liquor Bar all serve a very
memorable meal. If dinner and a show is on
your bucket list, head to Palace Theater in the
Dells where they offer scrumptious food paired
with a variety of Broadway-caliber performances
throughout the year.
GO YOUR SEPARATE WAYS:
While togetherness is the main goal of the trip,
it’s O.K. to schedule a little me-time too. There
are spa treatments to be enjoyed, rounds of golf
to be played, and winery and microbrewery tours
to take. n

SPORTING GOOD TIME
SPORTING
GOOD TIME
The entry on the calendar reads “away basketball tournament” or “annual soccer camp” or
“regional dance competition.” But couldn’t it just as easily read “family bonding time”?
If you’re a hockey mom or baseball dad, you’re
very familiar with the routine – hours in the car
followed by weekends in the stands. Truth be told,
you wouldn’t have it any other way, because it’s
your son’s or daughter’s love of the game that
brings the family together. By “family” that could
mean siblings and grandparents along for the
fun, even the rest of the players and parents that
you’ve gotten to know so well you now consider
them family too.
If you’re new to the sports scene in Wisconsin
Dells, here are some ideas to show you how the
game is played.
Let’s start with lodging. Hotels like All Star Value Inn
and Ambers Hideaway really enjoy hosting teams,
plus they’re close to two of the largest sports facilities – the Woodside Sports Complex – Wisconsin
Dells on Hwy 13 and the JustAgame Fieldhouse right
downtown. The large waterpark resorts are also pros
at putting up the team for the weekend. Check out
the full list of lodging options on page 127.
Getting to sports facilities is easy, given the community of Wisconsin Dells proper is less than 20
square miles. The only one on the outskirts of town
is the Woodside Sports Complex – Mauston, which
also happens to be the largest all-turf multi-sports
facility in the Midwest, so it’s understandable they
needed a bit more room to spread out.
Pick up some logo apparel at JustAgame Fieldhouse
– Retail. The selection will surprise you and you
know it will be put to good use immediately. The
sports stores at Outlets at The DellsSM are perfect
if you suddenly discover that socks, shoes or other
gear have been left behind.
Getting the team together for at
least one evening meal is a
great ritual and it goes
a long way in building camaraderie.

a nice job catering to groups of hungry athletes,
as does Famous Dave’s BBQ with two locations
in the Dells area. For breakfast, grab-and-go
options like McDonald’s and Panera Bread work
best when you’re in a rush to get to an early
game. For lunch, try Monk’s Bar & Grill at the
Wilderness or BJ’s Restaurant – both are casual
and family-friendly. Other fun lunch spots
include Hot Dog Avenue where there’s both a
Chicago Dog and a Green Bay Dog on the menu,
and Milio’s Sandwiches known for fresh bread,
meat and veggies. The variety of dining options
in the Dells is as big as the team’s collective
appetite, with the full list of choices starting
on page 142.
There will be downtime to fill, which is no problem in Wisconsin Dells. Let the players enjoy
some friendly competition at mini-golf, laser
tag or bowling. Knuckleheads Trampoline
Park • Rides • Bowling has a trampoline
park with hoops where they can show off
their trick shots.
Once the tournament wraps up, the coach
will give the players the go-ahead to hit the
waterparks before heading for home. n
JUSTAGAME FIELDHOUSE A 53,000 square foot

close to shopping, dining and attractions. Booking

WOODSIDE – THREE CAMPUSES Woodside Sports
Complex in Mauston is a sprawling multi-sport
facility with eight fully synthetic turf fields used
for baseball and softball. Located just on the
outskirts of Wisconsin Dells on Hwy. 13, Woodside’s
second campus is home to six soccer fields and
four baseball diamonds, again all synthetic turf.
Their third campus is the Wisconsin Dells Center, a
domed facility that can handle multiple courts, ball
fields or even a full size soccer field under cover.
POPPY WATERMAN ICE ARENA Mini-mites to
juniors like the full-size NHL rink here. Also
available for figure skating and open skate fun.
Sports events are also hosted at area parks, the local
high school, the House of Wellness Fitness/Aquatic

• TRENDS IN MEETING PLANNING
Trends in
MEETING PLANNING:
“We’

togeth is
er.”
A Conversation with Tifani Jones, Director of Sales,
Wisconsin Dells Visitor & Convention Bureau
Q. Describe the trend toward bringing mind/body/spirit experiences to
meetings.
A. We’re seeing breakout sessions in these three tracks. There could be a
Zumba class and nutritionist talk pre-breakfast, a midday meditation,
and a session focused on creative brainstorming based on the group’s
goals. People are encouraged to sign up based on what they need to move
forward in their career.
Q. What about new teambuilding pursuits, especially those in the great
outdoors?
A. Teambuilding that puts you in a different environment and different
state of mind can be very powerful. Ziplining, hiking and golf all fall
into this category. The reward comes in being with your colleagues and
accomplishing something as a team. It’s more an attitude of “we’re all in
this together” than “I’m out to win.”
Q. Are attendees open to the experiences?
Q. Is the trend of “walking meetings” taking off in Wisconsin Dells?
A. Most are, absolutely. They appreciate being paid attention to as individuals. A. We’re seeing it with breakout sessions, although it’s not for the noteIt’s a reflection of reinventing events for Millennials and Boomers.
Q. Does it create a better atmosphere for learning?
A. When it comes to the business at hand, people want to participate and are
more productive. In fact, there’s even a semantic shift among meeting planners
from “attendee” to “participant.” When you create a positive environment,
people are more likely to participate because they know they matter.
taking obsessed. The goal is to keep the group engaged in a single
conversation. You can build in stops along the way for a speaker or guided
discussion. It’s a positive and creative way to work.
Q. Are volunteer activities part of meetings?
A. Yes, giving back as part of a meeting or conference reinforces a culture of
philanthropy and contributes to a wonderful sense of accomplishment. n

Ho-Chunk Gaming, Wisconsin Dells – Hotel
More Proof Wisconsin Dells
ISN’T JUST FOR KIDS
Last summer, a motorcoach rolled into Wisconsin
Dells. Not such an unusual sight. But what was
unusual was the passenger list of this particular
tour – they were all motorcoach operators, about
30 in all hailing from all parts of the country,
all making their living hosting group tours. They
were in the Dells as guests of the local Visitor &
Convention Bureau.
“We thought it was time to host the hosts,” said
Tifani Jones, Director of Sales for the Wisconsin
Dells Visitor & Convention Bureau. “They were
definitely surprised at how much there was to do,
and it didn’t take long for them to come to the
consensus that Wisconsin Dells isn’t just for kids.”
That’s no small revelation, considering the
community markets itself to families as “The
Waterpark Capital of the World!®”
The invitees stayed at Ho-Chunk Gaming,
Wisconsin Dells – Hotel; had a reception at the
International Crane Foundation; visited Circus
World; were entertained at Wisconsin Opry, Palace
Theater in the Dells, the Tommy Bartlett Show, and
the Dells Lumberjack Show; did a little shopping at
Market Square Cheese and Outlets at The DellsSM;
and took a boat tour of the Upper Dells of the
Wisconsin River after first seeing river photographs
by famed 19th century landscape photographer
and visual historian H.H. Bennett at his historic
studio that still stands in downtown Dells.
“All that in less than two days, and we just
scratched the surface,” added Jones. “It was
great fun to see their reaction to a destination
they thought they knew.”
After the motorcoach operators returned home
and had a little time to process the experience,
the Wisconsin Dells staff asked them to e-mail
back with one word that best described their impression of the area. Talk about a fun response!

Ideas for
Themed Tours:
MYSTERY TOUR
In the Dells it could be tied to the
Wisconsin River – the history, legends
and, of course, mystery of the river that
bisects the town.
DINNER THEATER
Yes, dinner theater is making a comeback, and in Wisconsin Dells a group
could hop from Wisconsin Opry, to Palace
Theater, to Crystal Grand Music Theatre,
to Paul Bunyan’s Northwoods Cook
Shanty and Dells Lumberjack Show.
ONLY PLACE IN THE WORLD TO SEE
Wisconsin Dells has its share of one-ofa-kinds, like the H.H. Bennett Studio,
Circus World, and the International
Crane Foundation. n
