WELCOME TO GDAŃSK UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY Gdańsk University ofTechnology (GUT) is the largest technical university in the Pomeranian Region and one of the oldest technical universities in Poland. The impressive 77 hectare of University campus is a harmonic combination of 100-year old buildings with XXI century ultramodern premises. At 9 faculties the University offers Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctoral studies conducted in both full time and part time systems in various areas of science and technology. The academic offer comprises 37 fields of undergraduate studies and 27 fields of graduate studies, including 3 interdepartmental courses and 2 inter-academic courses currently offered. GUT provides also 2 fields of undergraduate and 12 fields of graduate studies with English as a medium of instruction. 25 000 students have access to specialist laboratories, lecture theatres with multimedia facilities, a library with 1.2 million volumes as well as various sports facilities. The university’s achievements in the area of Research & Development are reflected in yearly contribution of over 3000 publications, of which nearly 300 appear in the world’s most renowned scientific journals on the ISI list, and more than 40 are scientific monographs and academic textbooks. Great emphasis is placed on maintaining high education quality standards – the University holds the prestigious ECTS Label which indicates that the program of education in all fields of study is focused on strengthening the student's practical competence and the shaping of attitudes that will help him enter the labor market. So far, ECTS Label has been received by only four universities in Poland. GUT is the first and only Polish university to be a member of the CDIO Initiative, founded by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in collaboration with Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden, providing proindustrial oriented education for engineers on basis of “Conceive, Design, Implement and Operate” concept. The university carries out an important project, whose goal is to create modern technical infrastructure for the implementation of the educational program of Engineer of the Future at Gdańsk University of Technology. The project includes not only the modernization of didactic infrastructure and construction of laboratories, but first of all the implementation of a new model of education-oriented development of engineering skills: planning, design, construction, and inference based on performed experiments. Innovative University of Technology – selected achievements: "Polish invention of the year 2013" was CyberEye, which is used for diagnosis and treatment of persons in a coma. The authors of the interface also received Prime Minister's Award for scientific and technical achievements in 2013. Gold medal at the XVII Moscow Exhibition of Inventions and Innovative Technologies "ARCHIMEDES 2014" was awarded to researchers from the Faculty of Electronics, Telecommunications and Informatics of GUT. Gold Medal at Poznan International Fair 2014 for satellite pumping unit was awarded to the team of Faculty of Mechanical Engineering. Four medals at fair BRUSSELS INNOVA 2013 l GUT scientists won. Gold medals were awarded for inventions developed at the Faculty of Electronics, Telecommunications and Informatics: Talking Maps - GIS system supporting the movement of the blind, CyberEye, a movie player with the function of improving the intelligibility of dialogues. Silver medal was awarded to an intelligent inspection camera controlled by RFID signals. Silver medal at the International Fair of Inventions and Innovation IENA 2013 in Nuremberg was awarded to team from the Faculty of Chemistry for biopolymer material for medical and cosmetic applications. Gold medal at the fair Technicon-Innovation 2013, together with a special award for the product best suited for implementation, which was developed at the Faculty of Chemistry, was obtained by Chill-ID – a thaw indicator. By ferry More about possibilities to travel to Gdansk Download city map CAMPUS MAP How to get to GUT? 1) From the airport to GUT you can travel by: Bus no.210 (direction: Gościnna) to "DworzecGłówny PKP", change to tram no. 6, 9, 11 or 12 (direction: Jelitkowo, Strzyża, Zaspa or Oliwa) and get off at "Politechnika" stop. The main building of GUT is about 10 minutes walking distance from the stop. Instead of travelling by trams you can take Fast City Rail (in Polish SKM) from "GdańskGłówny" to "GdańskPolitechnika" station. The main building is about 15 minutes walking distance from the station, Bus no. 110 (direction: Wrzeszcz PKP) to "GaleriaBałtycka", change to tram no. 2, 5, 6, 9, 11 or 12 (direction: ŁostowiceŚwiętokrzyska, Nowy Port, Przeróbka, ChełmWitsa, Siedlce) and get off at "Politechnika" stop. If you travel by train to "GdańskWrzeszcz" you can take from "Klonowa" stop a tram no. 5, 6, 9, 11 or 12 (towards: Nowy Port, Łostowice, Świętokrzyska, Przeróbka, Chełm Witosa or Siedlce) and get off at "Politechnika" stop. At Gdańsk University of Technology's Campus you can find 10 dormitories/hall of residence offering 2500 places. Dormitories are quite comfortable but there are only double or triple rooms available. The rent you have to pay in the beginning of each month. Prices: 90 - 150 Euro per bed, depending on the standard of the building and the kind of room. It is possible to stay in dormitories also during summer holidays (when you decide to stay longer after finishing your study period), but rent is higher than during the academic year. Feel free if you want to rent a flat/room/private house in Gdańsk on your own, but please note, that prices for private accommodations as a rule cost more than a room in dormitory. We can recommend company Accomodation for Students (www.e-afs.com). Each student is obliged to register upon his arrival at the City Hall. Students coming from countries that are not EU members need to register within 4 days from their arrival. Documents required to registration: 1. Registration Form 2. Passport Address: City Hall, Branch no. 1; 74 Partyzantów St, Gdańsk-Wrzeszcz Accommodation at GUT Dormitories BASIC RULES: 1. Quiet hours: 22:00 – 6:00 (no disruptive music, loud voices, etc.) 2. Visiting hours: 7:00 – 23:00. Overnight guest are allowed to stay in dormitory, but first you must obtain permission of administration office. 3. Party: only with written approval of the head of the dormitory. 4. Safety rules: smoking inside the dorm, drugs, violence, harassment, and other illegal activities will not be tolerated. 5. Payment: invoice will be available at your account at moja.pg, and must be paid by the 20th day of each month. 6. Caution: each students is obligated to settle 200 PLN refundable one-off payment. 7. Any damage caused by you to university property will be paid by you. 8. Leave all public places, such as kitchens, laundry and showers in the same (or better) condition as when you came to them. Climate: Due to surrounding hills and the Baltic Sea, climate and weather in Gdansk is diverse. During the summer the sea and its cool breeze contribute to temperature drop. The opposite situation takes place in the winter, when the sea reduce the temperature drop. Usually the coldest month in Gdansk is February (-3°C, but -15°C is not rare), and the warmest July and August (+18°C, but 25-30°C at times). An average winter provides splendid weather for skiing in the Polish mountains and an average summer is a mix of heat waves and showers. You may expect shortened opening hours of small local shops and during the weekend. As for shopping centres, they open at 10 am. And do not close till 10 pm, seven days a week. During public holidays all supermarkets and malls are closed. Gas stations are open 24/7 and they usually allow limited shopping. Banks are usually open between 10 am. and 6-7 pm. In Gdansk there are few markets where you can buy fresh fruits and vegetables. One of them is close to the University and dormitories on Wyspianskiego Street. For other greater shopping needs there are two major shopping centers in the Tricity: GaleriaBałtycka (Baltic Gallery) and Klif in Gdynia. In Gdansk you can find also: Madison Shopping Gallery in the city center, Manhattan in Gdansk-Wrzeszcz, Alfa Centrum in Gdansk-Przymorze. In case you need to buy something in the middle of the night there is supermarket Tesco and several pharmacies. Emergency phone numbers: The country code for Poland is 0048 (+48) and the Gdańsk code is 58. When calling from a landline, dial: 999: Ambulance, 998: Fire Brigade, 997: Police, 981: Road Assistance, 986: Municipial Police. When calling from a mobile phone dial 112 (which is the general emergency number), or one of the above numbers preceded by the local code (e.g. in Gdańsk police 58 997). Currency: The Polish unit of currency is złoty (PLN). 1 złoty = 100 groszy. Local abbreviation: zł. The exchange rate for 1 euro is approximately 4,- PLN. It is recommended to get polish currency upon arrival you will need this if you plan on taking public transport. In most restaurants and bigger shops you can pay with bank cards or credit cards. There is also plenty of ATMs. Pay pass is becoming increasingly popular. In order to open a bank account at a Polish bank you usually need only a passport. The student identity card entitles students to discounts on tickets to cinemas, theatres, museums and public transport. Living costs: Monthly living costs of an average student in Poland: 1200-2000 PLN. Monthly rent: dormitory 300-450 PLN, room at a private apartment 500-1000 PLN Generally the costs of food, public transportation and housing are somewhat lower in Poland than in Western Europe. Nonetheless, they increase every year. Average prices of everyday products: bread 500g: 2-5 PLN, milk 1l: 2-4 PLN, butter: 3-5 PLN, eggs (10): 4-8 PLN water 1,5l: 2-3 PLN, water (restaurants, pubs) 0,33l: 3-5 PLN coffee in a cafe: 7-12 PLN apples 1kg: 1-4 PLN, potatoes 1kg: 1-3 PLN, tomatoes 1kg: 2-9 PLN, orange juice 1l: 3-5 PLN, white sugar 1kg: 3-5 PLN, chicken breasts 1kg: 15-20 PLN, washing detergents: 4-7 PLN, Other exemplary costs: energy and gas monthly: 120 PLN, full price monthly ticket: 80-105 PLN, cinema student's ticket: 16-20 PLN, haircut: 25-50 PLN, lunch at canteen: 10-15 PLN Public transport: Public transport in Tricity (Gdańsk, Sopot, Gdynia) is delievered by busses, tramways, trolleybuses (in Gdynia) and Fast City Rail (in Polish, SKM), connecting the Tricity. As a rule, tickets should be bought at newsagent's booth, from the driver (but you need the exact amount) or ticket machines on stops and stations. The tickets for tramways, buses and trolleybuses must be validated in a ticket punching machine immediately on boarding the vehicle. The puncher, usually an orange box at the eyelevel, which stamps the date and time on your ticket. Tickets for fast city rail you have to punch before you get on, in the machines on stations or city rail tunnels. There are many types of tickets available, including long-term and time-limit tickets.The expected length of the trip is indicated on the timetable at the stop/station. Brace yourself for ticket controllers, dressed casually, appeared suddenly and rarely communicate in english. They have to have ID tags. Students aged below 26 are entitled to discount in most means of public transport. In municipal transport it is 50% discount; necessary documents: a valid Polish student card (sometimes the International Student Identity Card - ISIC) and a 37% discount on transportation via national railways. In Gdańsk you can buy, i.e: one way ticket: 3,- PLN (does not entitle to change the vehicle), onehour ticket: 3,60 PLN, 24-hours ticket: 12,- PLN. It is also possible to buy a season ticket, especially for those who frequently use public transport. You can choose 1, 4 or 5 months valid season ticket (80-219,- PLN) . Tickets for 4 or 5 months are only for students. The mentioned above prices are without discount for students. More about tickets Students who have already received their student cards can use them as season tickets for Gdansk municipal transport. To do so, they should fill in the following form: wniosek and submit it along with the student card at one of the branches of ZTM, e.g: o PunktObsługiKlientanr 2, Wyspiańskiego 9A (close to the university). o PunktObsługiKlientanr 3, Main Railway Station in the city centre (tunnel). After submitting the documents, the student receives a confirmation, that will be valid for 5 days, which will allow him to travel in the municipal transport with student discount. Travel If you want to travel within Poland or Europe you can do it by intercity transport: 1. Train (the national railway company PKP, which operates various types of trains, from fast and expensive EuroCity to slower and low standard pospieszne); 2. Coach (regional bus operators under a general name PKS, as well as private coach companies, e.g. Polski Bus); 3. Plane ( LOT, Eurolot; Wizzair, Ryanair). Learning and studying in GDAŃSK MEDICAL CARE NON EU / EEA CITIZENS: Health insurance is mandatory for all non-EU students. You can choose private insurance company or join a voluntary health insurance in Poland in one of National Health Fund branches (NFZ- NarodowyFunduszZdrowia). Under this insurance scheme, students are entitled to free medical care and can use university health care clinics and health centres. Also, all foreign students have the option of purchasing additional accident insurance. The resort operates 20 sports sections, including swimming, athletics, judo, volleyball, football, tennis and table tennis. Sports center is located in Wrzeszcz on the main traffic route, close to SKM and tram lines. We have a modern, newly renovated swimming pool complex , a large 25-meter and a small 12.5-meter, which students use in physical education. We have a newly decorated, full-size sports hall for team games. New indoor tennis courts and football pitch. There is also a climbing wall and two playgrounds for beach volleyball Young boaters operating in AD PG University computer club regularly train in our wioślarni , a unique facility of this type in Poland. Notable successes relate to national competitions, but also international. Welcome to the new gym and aerobics room. Where you can practice martial arts such as judo etc. It is worth noting that the center also organises ski camps and sailing .
