Fall is in the air with thoughts of how we, as an agency, can continue
to impact individuals in positive ways that depict changing seasons. In
particular, how can we add autumn colors to the lives of those we
serve: our consumers, their families, community stakeholders, our
staff, and even the environment? Vigilance! Kaleidoscope strives to be
exceptional by staying abreast of the latest developments regarding
disabilities, waiver programs and public policies. In September, we
welcomed David Ferleger as a speaker at our Parent Group, Attorney
at Law, who served as the legal council for Halderman v. Pennhurst,
originally filed in 1974, as one of our country’s most infamous
court cases impacting deinstitutionalization for the developmentally
disabled. He made an impact on those who attended that group.
In addition, we continue to meet the needs of our populations through
expanded family support groups, our new peer groups and support of
local programs that support our wide array of causes. I hope to see you
at the Autism Speaks Walk in Philadelphia this month, as well as at
our annual Halloween Party on October 29th. Together, we can
transition through seasons with love, hope and growth.

In the last week of September through the first week in
October, Boston holds an Art Week to provide arts
and entertainment as a non-profit event for the greater
community of Boston. Each day is filled with a variety
of events that involve the creative aspect of an artist.
Many of the events that take place involve the art of
food, children’s crafts, fashion, photography,
sculptures, and so much more. Boston Art week offers
a behind the scenes look into the creative process of an

The Happiness Trick
“It's amazing out there” is the phrase that appears every time I
open my Weather Channel app on my phone. This assumes
that every day, no matter how hot, cold, windy or wet, is
amazing. Sitting in a friend's Speech and Language
Development office, I happened to glance at a book called The
Happy Pig. With wonder, I browsed through the small book as
a mere pig changed the negative morale of his farm by making
a decision to embrace every day with happiness. Instead of
engaging in complaints with his peers, the pig added a positive
spin to all conversations. By the end of the story, even the
chickens were smiling.
Life throws us curve balls. Some days are just naturally full of
joy. On the opposite end of the spectrum, we all have days that
make us want to crawl back in bed and retreat from the world.
However, then there are the "gray" days; the ones that don't
evoke deep feelings or memory-provoking thoughts. How do
we emulate the concept of "amazing every day" or the pig's
commitment to find the positive in everything in our
complicated lives?

Add 1 cup gummy worms or other creepy crawler
candy to two ice cub trays filled with fruit punch and
freeze. It’s that simple and scary!
Here's what I am taking from this conversation: there are no
guarantees in life. There will be ups and downs and even days
or time periods that seem "gray." First of all, embrace the gray.
There is such a simple joy in living without an emotional
rollercoaster as we so often do without appreciation. Second,
read the book, “The Pig of Happiness.” Take his philosophy
and run with it. Become the happy pig for the people in your
life. Spread the joy. Finally, wake up every day and tell
yourself, “it’s amazing out there." I know I am smiling as I
write this. I hope you are too.
