C O N F L U E N C E Confluence Connections The newsletter for the entire Confluence Academy community SUMMER 2011Issue No. 28 Vi s i t i n g T h e D o o r w a y To T h e F i n a l F ro n t i e r Old North students visit Kennedy Space Center over Memorial Day weekend S tudents from the Old North campus learned about the history and future of space exploration during their memorial weekend trip to NASA’s John F. Kennedy Space Center in Pensacola, FL. The unforgettable experience included seeing the space shuttle launch pad where the Shuttle Endeavor, led by Captain Mark Kelly, took off for its 16-day mission just two Brazilian style food their first night in Florida. weeks before the arrival of the Confluence students. Students also had the opportunity to see a massive Saturn V rocket and experience the rumble of a rocket lift off. They visited the Astronaut Hall of Fame which features the world’s largest collection of personal astronaut mementos, including historic spacecraft. There, students had the opportunity to sit in a mission control console, take a virtual moonwalk, and “feel” the pull of 4 Gs in the G-Force Simulator. This remarkable experience was a collaborative effort on the part of Confluence Academy’s Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, Young Ladies of Elegance and Young Distinguished Gentlemen and B.E.T.S. (Brave Enough to Succeed Mentoring Group). Trip organizers Stanley Johnson and Lakisha Martin created a blog to document their adventure. To see more of their photos, visit the blog at confluenceoldnorth.edublogs.org. Just as fun for the students and their adult chaperones, was the airline trip, staying at the beautiful Hyatt Place Convention Center and eating Confluence Connections www.confluenceacademy.com 1 C O N F L U E N C E Letter from the Chairman Another Successful Year for Confluence Dear Confluence Families and Friends, As I helped to congratulate our kindergarten and 8th grade students at promotion ceremonies this month, I couldn’t help but share in the joy of our families who were so proud of their student’s accomplishments. While Confluence Academy is pleased to have played a role in advancing the education of these young students, we recognize that the greatest contribution has been made by you, as parents and guardians of these aspiring students, for which we thank you. Numerous studies have concluded that one of the single most important factors in the success of a young student is a caring and responsible adult in their life. Looking to the future of your student, I encourage you to continue to play that important role in your child’s next phase of education. We have taken the opportunity in this issue of Confluence Connections to recognize students who have met our attendance challenge. They had perfect attendance for the months of March, April and May. Attending school each and every day is an essential ingredient to student achievement. So as we close the year, I want to take this opportunity to thank the hard working and dedicated teachers and staff of Confluence Academy and each of the parents and guardians who have supported their student’s efforts. And students, I challenge you to get a running start on next year by reading three books of your choosing over the summer. We look forward to seeing you and your children on Monday, August 15th, our first day of school. Have an enjoyable and safe summer! Sincerely, Craig Glover Chairman, Board of Directors 2 www.confluenceacademy.com Confluence Connections C O Choice Students N F L U E Future Stars? N C E Prepping For The Future Walnut Park gives out Student Choice awards Talented students show CPA students explore their stuff at South City careers, leadership In June, Walnut Park held its first annual Student Choice awards. The entire staff was given the opportunity to select a student to recognize at the awards ceremony. How a “Student of Choice” was selected is entirely up to the nominator. From a student who always shows Confluence Pride, to one who reads the most books, any student could be selected for any reason. On Thursday, June 16th, parents, students, teachers, and families gathered in the South City cafeteria for the 2011 Talent Show. South City teachers Walter Brown and Angela Keely auditioned over 90 students the previous week and narrowed the show down to 12 acts. "Michael Jackson" made an appearance, there was some whipping of hair back and forth in the style of Willow Smith, strong stepping, praise dancing, and singing, just to name a few of the wonderful performances. Mr. Brown, Mrs. Keely, and Ms. Sonya Mueller even performed a Lip-sync to Katy Perry's hit, Firework. It was a fun-filled evening, where attendees got a chance to witness the amazing talents of our South City students. Everyone is looking forward to what our students will have in store for next year! Once selected, the students are presented by their nominators with an official invitation to attend the Student Choice Awards with their parents. Over a lovely dinner of spaghetti and dessert, students and their families sat with the staff member who recognized them, who shared why the student was special and how that student had an impact that was worthy of recognition. It was a very proud night for many parents and students. We can't wait for next year's Student Choice Awards when more students will be recognized for the unique ways they make Walnut Park outstanding. Confluence Connections Confluence Prep high school students are taking advantage of a wide variety of leadership development, college and career readiness programs this summer. These programs include: Additionally, 11 Confluence Prep students have been selected to assist teachers in Confluence’s upcoming summer school. Congratulations, students.
